Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Wednesday Overnight Open Thread - February 12, 2025 [TRex]![]() Good evening Horde. The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the overnight variety. This is the Wednesday night ONT.Maybe it's your annoying neighbor, overbearing mother-in-law, your ex, or that coworker who still gives you nightmares. This Valentine's, let an elephant do the talking and name a turd after a turd.May not be the best Valentine's Day present in history, but seems like a solid number 2.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Eating nuisance beavers was legal until the law was changed in 2024 as part of the environment omnibus bill. The change was questioned by Senator Steve Green (R-Fosston) who couldn't understand it. Senator Foung Hawj (DFL-Saint Paul) indicated there were concerns about the potential for disease or parasite contraction from eating a rodent and a lack of research on the safety of eating beavers. "I'm still not sure why it's in [the bill]," said Sen. Green. "I can tell you that even though I personally don't go out and trap beavers to eat them, I have eaten them. It is pretty good, but it is a rodent and I have a hard time getting past that. But I do know a lot of people that do consume beaver and I think it's a little problematic that we're making it a crime." Responding to questions on how to enforce the law, Senator Hawj said lawmakers would leave it up to residents and the "honor system." It's worth noting the ban strangely only appears to apply to nuisance beavers. Beavers trapped otherwise are still fair game. [O]n the Senate floor last year, Senator Justin Eichorn (R-Grand Rapids) mentioned that beavers are referred to as "nature's chicken nuggets." They went to Stater Bros. and bought some rotisserie chicken and sardines and tomato sauce, apples and peanut butter, all kinds of stuff. They made a feast for him. The food worked like a charm and within minutes of placing the trap, the bear emerged from underneath the house and walked in and triggered the trap door. The bear was tagged and later released into the forest.
While navigating notoriously difficult sections on rocky terrain with a total vertical gain of 465,000 feet, Dower ran and hiked an average of 54 miles each day with consistent support from her mom, Debby Komlo, and friend Megan Wilmarth, in addition to volunteers who paced her through different sections. Her days began with a 3 a.m. alarm (usually from a tent close to the trail) followed by a quick breakfast. After taping blisters and sores on her feet, she set off in the dark around 3:30 a.m. For the next 17 hours or so, Dower only stopped for a couple of short breaks for meals, 90-second "dirt naps," and pacers rotating in and out until 8:30-9:30 p.m.Impressive, but if she wanted an easier way to set a record of some sort, she could have tried frisbee golf. Not sure about the beard thing though... Written correspondence can be sent to moronhobbies at protonmail dot com. Are you lurking? Come out and play. As many of you know, Catholics must refrain from eating meat on Fridays during Lent, eating fish or instead. During the early days of colonization, French trappers working western areas of Canada and the northern midwest had a difficult time catching fish for their Friday meals, so, as special dispensation, the Church decided that beaver, for the purpose of Friday Lenten meals, was a fish.

Beaver tail is supposed to be really good, I guess. Trappers, explorers, Mountain men, it was supposedly one of the very favorites.
——— NewYorker “Isn’t this undemocratic, sticking us with a dead-hand document that we can’t change when the times do?” Louis Menand on the arguments to reform—or abandon—the Constitution. ———— This is standard leftist boilerplate. What’s interesting is that we can most certainly change the document. They thought of that, they are called Amendments. But the real crux of the issue is the while technology does advance, human nature does not, and has not changed in 5,000 years. They were arguing exactly the same things, the same problems in 1792 as we were in 1992, don’t be fooled. The founders knew their history, and did their homework. “Democracy” isn’t mentioned one time, not even once, in the Constitution nor Bill of Rights. Only in the post WWII era did it really start to enter into the lexicon, along with a lot of other anodyne bullshit, thought ending cliches, and vaguely good sounding pablum. Oh, bulls**t. Unless I can claim a "total vertical gain of 150 feet" because I went up (and down) the stairs in my house 15 times today. My total vertical gain was ... 10 feet (at best - since I sleep upstairs, the total is 0). (Hint, there aren't any mountains on the Appalachian Trail over 7,000 feet. Pikes Peak in Colorado is over 14,000 feet high, but it's still only about 5,500 feet above surrounding terrain. McKinley is only 18,000 feet from base to summit and is the tallest mountain in the world at that measure, rather than absolute height. Everest is only 29,000 feet above sea level.) About the beaver hunting story:
1. Around 40 years ago there was a story in (I think) the Washington Post about a surprisingly sensible judge. Someone sued the Baltimore Market for selling raccoons and possums* that were not government inspected, unlike beef and pork and every other meat sold in stores. The judge asked if they had any evidence of anyone ever getting sick from eating either of the beasts bought at the market, the plaintiffs admitted that they had never heard any complaints, and the judge threw the case out. *I'm not quite sure about the specific animals. There were definitely two species, but one or the other of them may have been muskrat. (Oops! Ran out of characters: point 2 will be in separate comment.) Continued from 167:
2. Around 45 years ago, I was working for a small company in the San Francisco Bay area that measured air pollution. The vice president had a wife who was an Alaskan Indian and nine daughters ranging from 6 or 8 to 30-something. One day he invited all the employees at his branch office to dine on a beaver that his wife had cooked up and served on a platter, which her Alaskan in-laws had shot and shipped to her, and all the daughters were there, too. (It may have been Thanksgiving.) One of the more naive employees (we'd probably call him Autistic now) said "You know, I've always heard of 'eating beaver pie' but I've never actually done it." At which point, all the other employees, and the boss, and his wife, and his older daughters almost fell out of their chairs laughing, while the younger daughters said "Daddy, daddy, what's so funny? Explain it to me!" (I wasn't there myself, since I worked the main office, but I trust my informant, who was. He didn't tell me how the boss explained it.) (shaking head) If a quarter ton bear is underneath my house, the last thing I want to do is make him feel welcome. The best way to make a quarter ton bear feel welcome is to give it a delicious meal. "Do not feed the bears" doesn't mean "Do not feed some of the bears."
Bears (especially 525lb bears) live to eat. They remember where they got food. And, if someone gives them a 5 star chicken dinner...by God, they aren't only going to remember. They're going to tell their friends. Then, the crowning act of stupidity was drugging and tagging....and letting it go. So, now you have a quarter ton bear who is always hungry getting a roofie, unwanted jewelry and a headache, in that order....and their new favorite restaurant. This will not end well. Felonious D. said he would end the Ukraine Russia within 24 hours after taking office. He has been in office almost 2 weeks and nothing. What a liar. Total loser.
Meanwhile over at Daily Kos Felonious D. did not announced today that he has set the stage to end the Ukraine - Russia war. What he did announce, "gleefully", is "he’s back to being Putin’s lap dog." I found this an oddly inconsistent smear for somebody that has been labeled there as Literal Hitler, not some cheap fake one, but the one who invaded the USSR in WWII that ended up killing 8 to 10 million Russians. Strangest lap dog ever; probably pees in bed too. I know. None of this Daily Kos stuff makes any sense to me either. The comedy hits keep on coming. Any volunteers to make a Trump Event Tracking Matrix?
I cannot keep track of where all nominees are in their confirmation processes, which Trump EOs have been stopped by Leftist judges and what the appeal status is for each, how much waste/fraud/abuse money Elon's Team has found each day, how many dumbo reporters Karoline Leavitt bitch slaps each day, how many criminal illegal alien thugs Homan deports each day, how many foreign leaders have caved to Trump each day, and so on. If anyone knows Elon, ask if he can give this task to one of his geeks. Most game tends to be really lean, or can be. And when times are tough, so it is for game, who are even leaner. Lewis & Clark mentioned at one point in the mountains they were all eating very lean deer meat, about 10 pounds a day, and were still hungry and getting sick. Fat is the name of the game in survival, not just protein (there are no “essential carbohydrates” btw). So I suspect beaver tail was prized for this reason alone. Lots of fat. Bear oil, and “fat” buffalo.

My dad had beavers on his pond. The pond eventually ran into the river nearby but the beavers didn't like that I guess. They kept building dams in the pond and along the creek toward the river. They also would come up onto my dad's porch and go underneath and get stuck. It would drive my dad's Irish setters crazy. Dad would call us to come over to help him get the beavers out from under the porch. We would get there and the dogs were barking like mad, the beavers would be slapping their tails on the ground and my dad and the neighbors were out with long poles trying to force the beavers back into the pond. Madness and chaos for a while. Good times.

🚨#BREAKING: Area 51 has been rocked by serious of earthquakes as seismic activity around mysterious testing site ramps up 📌#Lincoln | #Nevada A series of earthquakes have struck near the secretive Area 51 military testing base outside Las Vegas. The U.S. Geological Survey recorded a 2.8-magnitude tremor near the highly classified site in Nevada, long associated with rumors of alien research. The quake occurred east of Amargosa Valley, close to the infamous U.S. Air Force facility known for UFO-related conspiracy theories. It remains unclear if the minor tremor caused any damage to the base, which spans roughly 11 miles and requires top-level clearance for entry. Nevada experiences frequent seismic activity, with tens of thousands of micro-tremors each year, according to ShakeOut. People in the area believe the military testing base may be conducting secret projects or other unknown activities that could be causing the earthquakes. RAWSALERTS @rawsalerts I know a 2.8-magnitude earthquake isn’t serious, but you never know it could be aliens trying to escape from the underground bases in their spaceships or having an underground war! ==== ![]() Posted by: andycanuck (5LoD7) at February 13, 2025 12:07 AM (5LoD7) 388

What a scammer! Mario Nawfal @MarioNawfal 11h 🚨 JUDGE WHO BLOCKED TRUMP’S USAID CUTS BOUGHT HIS SEAT? Before Judge Jack McConnell called Trump a “tyrant” and blocked his USAID cuts, he was accused of buying his lifetime judicial seat with $700K+ in Democratic donations. McConnell funneled $15,530 to Sen. Jack Reed and $12,600 to Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse—the very senators who handpicked him for Obama. Both then refused to recuse themselves from his confirmation vote. Convenient, huh? Sen. Jeff Sessions called it “pay to play,” accusing McConnell of suing corporations, cashing in, and pumping money back into Democratic campaigns. Even the American Bar Association wasn’t impressed, with some rating him “not qualified”. Yet, Democrats pushed him through, and now he’s ruling against Trump. Nothing to see here, right? By the way, that brother-marriage is pretty evidently a citizenship scheme for him, for which she should be prosecuted. But she's a US citizen now, sigh. Have we ever stripped a naturalized citizen of their citizenship? I firmly believe a case could be made that she perjured herself when she took the citizenship oath, but it would take a bold AG to go that route. In the past few years, a Korean guy who was naturalized stole a bunch of defense secrets and gave them to Korea because he wanted to help "his country." The judge who sentenced him grumbled something about that oath he took. Korean dude said he never felt it. It was another moment of utter fury for me that he wasn't stripped of his citizenship and booted to NORTH Korea. Posted by: Blonde Morticia at February 13, 2025 01:08 AM (wjjYr) 487

Reality has set it that most missed the buyout and are subject to termination. Seems every one is on an termination email deathwatch. Also DOEd people are getting locked out of their computers and/or are getting termination notices. Once upon a Time IBM laid off 80,000 people in one pass. This is what happens when organizations becomes bloated. The difference with the federal situation is the bloat has been going on for decades so the headcount reduction is going to be outsized. This sense of entitlement by the FED employees that once hired that their jobs were tenured hospices must be hitting him like a freight train. It happens. Former limestone mine. It's located in Western PA, Butler County, town called Boyers. North part of the county. I grew up 15 miles west of it and never even knew it was there. Posted by: Puddleglum, cheer up for the worst is yet to come at February 13, 2025 02:17 AM (sAmhv) 538
Are the records stored in a limestone mine so that in the event of nuclear war, we can still slowly fire people?

Is that the aircraft carrier where Johnny McMaverick buzzed the tower before heading to Top Gun?
I love buzzing the tower. Posted by: Rev Wishbone at February 13, 2025 02:39 AM (fY84s) Posted by: Soothsayer learns about Kickapoo at February 13, 2025 02:43 AM (LLwnH) 542
I got to looking up this underground document storage. It's been done a lot. The National Archives uses several such facilities, and they are used privately as well. That Iron Mountain facility offers storage for private outfits as well. Main benefits for physical documents, paper, film, etc, etc are climate control and physical protection. 533 At least first out have shot at open jobs.
Well if a company wants dead beats Posted by: Skip at February 13, 2025 02:10 AM (fwDg9) I put in my retirement and took the buyout. I’m not a deadbeat. The ones staying are. They are unemployable outside of government work. The brain drain is going to be epic. There is no reason to believe smaller numbers will improve government when it is the idiots who stay. But have fun with that. I took the damned money. Posted by: tcn in AK at February 13, 2025 02:45 AM (GUxWu) 544
538: Maybe. I suspect its the dry, steady temperatures that is used. All that paper. You don't want humid.

Mind you, so far I have received one email telling me they acknowledged my resignation and that they will send me another email with instructions. Tomorrow will be a week with zero instructions. No way to know if they will keep the bargain or if this is the first bit of fuckery.

Either way, I will be gone soon. Tired of being the one dragging the idiots to the finish line and being yelled at for doing a good job. It ain’t worth the hassle.

How cool that it was so close to you! I knew that the government had underground storage for some things; what puzzles me is why these records needed such protection. Even BC (before computers) there were ways to verify dates and such. I wonder if had been used for storing something else prior, and became available when that program ended, and thus cheaper than buying a new building? Posted by: Tammy-al Thor at February 13, 2025 03:12 AM (Ezs10) 550
Underground storage offers protection from things that can happen above ground. Think 100 yr floods, tornados, hurricanes, wild fires, etc, etc. And man made disasters as well. You've got a lot of flammable stuff you're keeping down there, so a good fire suppression system is needed, but if you want to preserve physical media as long as you can, this is a good way to do it. The scandal here is the actual processing of all this requires doing it all down in the mine. If you've got physical paper documents you need to store, or even print out hard copy as back up for digital, this is the way to do it. Worth the hassle, TCN? Well. yeah. In the context of knowing you have the competence to pull them all together for a desired outcome. Certainly not so you can be castigated in any way for it. THAT is your justification for simply quitting. Been there, done that and ridding myself of that situation was an immediate relief, I never looked back nor dwelt on the mess. The wise words of Alfred E. Newman come to mind: "What, me worry?"
Posted by: RickZ at February 13, 2025 12:49 Jules bought me the best piece of historical memoribilia. It's a postcard picturing Alfred E. Neuman, before he was adopted by Mad magazine. Mailed Oct 1940 the caption under Alfred says...Sure - I'm for Roosevelt. I think this is priceless. You seldom hear about the widespread opposition to FDR in the rural Midwest but it was strong. The character apparently dates back to 19th century ads. This is funny, but from Wikipedia so who knows...
In 1958, Mad published letters from several readers noting the resemblance between Neuman and England's King Charles, then nine years old. Shortly thereafter, an angry letter under a Buckingham Palace letterhead arrived at the Mad offices: "Dear Sirs No it isn't a bit – not the least little bit like me. So jolly well stow it! See! Charles. P." The letter was authenticated as having been written on triple-cream laid royal stationery bearing an official copper-engraved crest.
