It's easy to forget that real people are losing their jobs due to the gutting of USAID. Let's take a moment to empathize with one of them.
![]() ![]() Less than a year after the container ship M/V Dali struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge and caused a deadly total collapse, Maryland and federal leaders have revealed the design of the new bridge that will be built to replace it. On Tuesday, Maryland Governor Wes Moore showed off renderings of the new bridge, which he said “honors the architectural tradition of the Francis Scott Key Bridge” while modernizing it with cables running from the deck to a pair of towers. It also raises the clearance for large vessels, going from the old bridge’s clearance of 185′ to a new clearance of 230′ at high tide. Moore pledged that, as the original bridge was built in 1977 using the most advanced industry standard and best materials available at that time, the new bridge will also be “constructed in accordance with the most advanced industry standards and with the best infrastructure design.” He said, “We are going to use the best materials available and are going to employ many Marylanders to get it done.” Transportation leaders are wasting no time in getting the project going. Maryland Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller, who is a former transportation engineer, said that preconstruction is already underway on both land and water, with demolition set to begin this spring. “Soon Maryland’s first cable-stayed bridge will rise,” she said. A cable-stayed bridge is one in which the weight of the deck is supported by a number of cables running directly to one or more towers. The Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge is a famous example in Charleston, South Carolina, and the Brooklyn Bridge is a hybrid cable-stayed bridge. This type of bridge is typically cost-effective and allows for a faster construction time compared to other bridge types. The design is indeed very nice. Interesting to see how the era of DOGE will affect the project. ![]() The Department Of ONT Fun (DOOF) is standing by for your feedback. This type of bridge is typically cost-effective and allows for a faster construction time compared to other bridge types I read an article in "American Scientist" written by Henry Petroski some years back in which he took pains to state that the center cable stay bridge design had yet to suffer a major, catastrophic failure. His point being that every new type of bridge eventually has that moment and that engineers would learn a whole lot about what were the weaknesses of the design of the failed structure. So there's that. Posted by: Krebs v Carnot: Epic Battle of the Cycling Stars (TM), imprison, imprison, imprison! at February 09, 2025 10:50 PM (xG4kz) 237
Pennies cost too much to produce, and are essentially of no value. The cheapest thing on the market is a buck or more now. The only use for pennies is to pile up until you take them to the change counter, or just throw them away. It lets businesses sell the 2.00 thing for 1.99 and people think its cheaper.

IMO, any new dollar coin should have at least the following features:
1) Significantly different size from every other coin. Bigger would be better, but smaller would be okay (dimes are smaller than nickels, after all). 2) Distinctive tactile features that distinguish it from other coins BY FEEL. Ridges, octagonal shape, something. You should be able to pull one out of your pocket by feel. 3) Contains the image of a bona fide American hero. Doesn't have to be a President. If it were up to me, I'd pick Norman Borlaug. Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at February 09, 2025 10:57 PM (W5ArC) 271

Eisenhower dollars were huge, nobody wanted them.
Nobody outside the Western states wanted silver dollars either. Millions languished in mint sewn canvas bags in bank basements for years, usually kept on hand for reserve requirements. A few cranks would trade silver certificates in for the dollars. When silver spot price exceeded $1.27 in the late 1950s it became a matter of time. By 1968 the government reneged on silver cert redemption, offering bags of silver shot. LaVere Redfield drove all over the US buying $1000 face bags of silver dollars. He would deposit them down a coal chute at his home, behind a false wall. When he died, he had over $100,000 in them, most of them pristine, and rare date coins worth a lot to collectors. I believe gold certificates were demonetized by FDR.
I seem to recall that silver certificates were still valid for some time after that. Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at February 09, 2025 11:01 PM (W5ArC) Both gold and silver certificates are obsolete, but can be swapped for FRNs. However, their collector value is typically more than their face value. FDR illegally banned ownership of gold certificates (and gold) but that has since been rescinded. FDR also forbade and reneged on contracts denominated in gold. This was common, particularly 99 year leases. There was an interesting court case involving an insurance building in Des Moines. Terwilliger iirc. It revolved around Novation
What happened, was because of inflation, a huge downtown building was being leased for $300 a month (or whatever). Ridiculous. A sharp eyed accountant noticed the original lease was denominated in gold. He said “Pay Up MFers” and they declined. The court ruled in favor of the leaseholders. Gold contracts are legal and enforceable and make a lot of sense. As was evident, a lot can happen in 100 years. Posted by: Common Tater at February 09, 2025 11:18 PM (uvCel) 356

I can fill my tripled up bags with as little as I please, and fill them in a way that makes them easier to unload at home. I prefer to have all my bathroom stuff together, kitchen stuff together, etc., and when I go to a cashier, no matter how I put them on the conveyor belt, the cashier rearranges them to conform to some sort of packing standard that causes me great inconvenience. I’ve thought about that. At one time, if you crossed the County line, the cops (or Sheriff) didn’t have jurisdiction.
You could move to another state. Change your name, and most likely nobody would ever know. Get a new identity. That’s almost impossible now, at least for Americans. We live in a kind of Digital Panopticon. Posted by: Common Tater at February 09, 2025 11:27 PM (uvCel) 390

Packing bags well is an art. If you do it right, they work really well: you create a framework with boxes and stuff like spaghetti, heavier stuff on the bottom, top it with things that mash like bread so its obvious where it is and can be avoided with stacking. I worked as a bagger at a grocery store one summer, and had a lot of fun fixing up bags for people. One time this hispanic guy came in with his family, stood around waiting while his wife tried to wrangle 3 little ones and pack everything and carry everything. I loaded up a bag with like 40 pounds of cans and heavy stuff and shoved it directly into his arms. Carry this you lazy bastard. Yeah we had to watch a video. I'd been bagging groceries going shopping with mom for a decade or more, so I was good already at it. They didn't want help out to the car much, but I did have an amusing event once doing that. One of the local Chinese restaurants used to shop for supplies at the store, and the lady brought her predictably gorgeous teen daughter, around my age. She gave me shy sweet looks and I was obviously interested and mom was having none of it. She stopped having me help with the car, and eventually just stopped bringing her along entirely. Sort of depends on what you think is a benefit. West of the time zone center meridian, local mean noon shifts later, meaning later sunsets, but also later sunrises. In some of the ridiculous ones, like the Michigan upper peninsula and middle western Indiana, even 30 minutes would result in some still very late sunrises around the winter solstice. No, it is not. Meanwhile, timezones are stupid. There are some real bs timezones out there I guarantee you most of you have never heard of. Australia/Lord_Howe ?? What the hell is that? The DST mess is about latitude, really, and the modern fact that we're slaves to the clock, rather than the sun (the ancient natural clock). So, it's about when you want sunset relative to quitting time per the clock vs sunrise relative to the clock. Now, the higher the latitude, the greater the swings in length of daylight between summer and winter solstice. In summer, you've got some room to play. In winter, it gets tighter. And there's nothing you can do about that. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at February 10, 2025 12:39 AM (w6EFb) 545

Yes it is. We are dirunal creatures. That natural clock of the sun determines our circadian rhythm (damn, can't spell that without looking it up).
Millions and millions of years of biology aren't going to be changed by some modern notion of a common time zone. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at February 10, 2025 12:42 AM (w6EFb) That has nothing to do with timezones, though. People lived thousands of years without standardized timezones, or even clocks, for that matter. It’s not as if your stomach says “Wow, the numbers on the clock read 12:00, it’s time to eat lunch!” Your body gets hungry for lunch in the middle if the day, whether the clock says “07:20” or “12:00” or “19:19” or “DB:QZ”, it’s all just arbitrary digits for keeping things in sync. Except now we have a global information space, but dozens and dozens of conflicting local rules on how to compute which digits appear on the clock. It doesn’t even make sense, the dividing lines are even. China is one TZ. Russia is 11. How does that make sense? Posted by: Disinterested FDA Director at February 10, 2025 12:51 AM (FC8SQ) 559

Just looking. In China, which is communist dictatorship, they make everyone follow the clock. Those to the far west have to get up very early relative to the sun, but yet they don't go to bed. They get less sleep. And there is striking correlation between longitude and life expectancy. Not all of that is due to the circadian disruption, but that effect is there. But, in modern time, being "slaves to the clock", the clock tends to force you to do that. Hence, one wants the clock to be close to the sun. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at February 10, 2025 12:59 AM (w6EFb) 565

For example, let's go on Zulu here in EST. Sunrise will occur at around 12:18 and sunset will be around 23:00.
Now, since we've become slaves to the clock. 6AM is get up time roughly, and 6PM is start of evening, ready to wind down, how is that gonna work. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at February 10, 2025 12:45 AM (w6EFb) You would wake up roughly when you wake up now. The digits on the clock are arbitrary. My body isn’t programmed to wake up at 06:30, it’s programmed to wake up about 30 minutes after sunrise. That might be 06:30 on the clock face or 12:30 or 17:45. Makes no real difference. Meanwhile, TZs make a mess of everything. If you ever coordinate across three or more TZs you just end up using UTC anyway. Every computer network I’ve ever worked on but one was set to UTC. The one that wasn’t was set to Eastern time and lost an hour of data every fall when DST ended. Posted by: Disinterested FDA Director at February 10, 2025 01:02 AM (FC8SQ) 569

Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at February 10, 2025 12:59 AM (w6EFb) But you would still just eat at whatever lunchtime is for your part of the world. There’s nothing magical about the digits 12:00 on the clock. If you worked in a region where a “9 to 5” started at 13:00, then lunch would be three hours in, at 16:00. And people already do this. I haven’t worked a job in my career that had any firm start time, end time or meal times. Some people start at 07:00 local time, some at 09:00, some at 10:30. One guy started at like 04:00, which was nuts, but more power to him. Posted by: Disinterested FDA Director at February 10, 2025 01:07 AM (FC8SQ) 571

I could not care less about daylight savings time. Up here we just don’t care. Alaska used to have four time zones, but we tossed that in the 1980s because PITA. We all moved closer to the Lower 48. Anchorage moved one hour east. Nobody noticed because our daylight changes six hours every day. If it’s dark, it’s winter. If it’s light it’s summer. Just leave it at one or the other. It’s the shift that sucks.
