  • Nvidia's RTX 5060 and 5060 Ti might arrive in March to steal the thunder from AMD's launch of its Radeon 9000 family, but probably won't succeed at doing that. (Tom's Hardware)

    The problem is twofold.

The best selling point of the 4060 is its low power consumption, and Nvidia is using the same 4nm TSMC process for the 5000 series, so there are no easy wins there. They can use GDDR7 memory, but that's more expensive and the chip on the 5060 is unlikely to be fast enough to make good use of it.

With the 5060 Ti things are more complicated. The 4060 Ti is 40% faster in theory than the base 4060, but has exactly the same 8GB of GDDR6 RAM on a 128 bit bus, so the performance of the card is meh, and collapses as soon as games demand more than 8GB. You can get a 16GB model, but it's still constrained by the 128 bit bus.

With the 5060 Ti, Nvidia can use GDDR7 - around 40% faster - and use 24Gbit chips so that the base model has 12GB of VRAM instead of just 8GB. That would give the chip a lot more breathing room - but if it works well it will encroach on the 5070 and Nvidia can't have that.

Also Intel's B580 already exists, has 12GB of VRAM, and costs just $250, constraining both AMD and Nvidia when it comes to lower-end cards.

13 National Post: 'We will not back down': Trudeau announces steep Canadian tariffs to retaliate against Trump

In Saturday night address, prime minister responds to Trump's move to impose 25-per-cent tariffs on Canadian imports starting Tuesday

Conservatives say referendum on carbon pricing won’t be central feature of next campaign

--

So tariffs are being imposed in both directions, and on April 1, our carbon taxes go up AGAIN (the cruelest of April Fools jokes) which causes prices on everything to go up as well.

And now apparently the carbon tax issue isn't going to be a major issue in the next election because of the tariff issue. *deep sigh*

Our market is so tied to the American market that our prices on everything are going to skyrocket, again, and we were already suffering from the massive price increases the past two years because of inflation caused by the Liberals printing cash when they'd shut down the economy mostly during Covid.

We're 10% the size of the American market. We're going to get crushed.

Dear God in Heaven, please help us.

Trump has said in his somewhat round about manner that he is using tariffs on traditional products as a way to make it so painful on the Chinese, Mexican and Canadian governments that they will cease tolerating, ignoring or tacitly supporting illegal immigration and drug smuggling.

46 For what it’s worth I don’t recall Trump really articulating this correlation or why it will work. He’s blustered before only to back off over partial concessions from trade partners. In other words he’s been negotiating via trade threats.

That's kind of backwards, isn't it? This is how threats are supposed to work. Do X, or I do Y. If you make good faith moves to do X, then I'm not gonna do Y. If i did, I'd go from being a bully to being a garden variety asshole, and then no one would ever do X because there would be no upside.

A lot of supposed trade experts seem to be missing out a key reason behind the 25% tariffs announced yesterday against Canada and Mexico by the Trump administration.

It’s a negotiation tactic, the USCMA has to be renegotiated next year.

This was one of the main innovations of the previous Trump administration on trade matters, putting sunset clauses on trade deals to make sure current or future US grievances could be addressed in future negotiations.

After looking at this, I honestly believe Trump wants us to have the Panama Canal. I honestly believe he wants us to have Greenland. I honestly believe Trump thinks Canada should be part of the United States. The terrace are because Canada has done such a horrible job protecting our borders and also protecting their own country. These people can’t stand up to this, and they’re making fools of themselves when they think they could cause us harm.

63 @46 I suppose, at several points in commercial history, 'we' were in the middle of a more or less productive pissing contest of tarrifry, and something came up that froze the balance for a generation, getting everyone used to a status quo in a trade war.

In high school we had a nice class-length film, not unlike the driver training bleedathons or those VD things, explaining Why It Must Be So. It was for the preservation of certain industries that otherwise would just perish and leave thousands jobless, like large scale shoemaking or shop-built watches -- said the junior senator from Massachusetts, John F. Kennedy.

If you watched this several years after you-know-what, it gave you one more thing to think about Oswald, and the school's film librarian.

77 It’s a negotiation tactic, the USCMA has to be renegotiated next year.

Trump also applied it to Ford, Caterpillar and other companies that were planning on moving their manufacturing to Mexico.

The problem is that under the Obama/Biden Destroy All The Things plan for the former United States, moving out of the country is a corporate survival tactic. With the Smart Money™ all predicting One Party Rule for the One Thousand Years of Darkness, it made a ton of sense.

Several impediments to restoring domestic manufacturing: sloth, illiteracy, drugs in the labor market, and lack of reliable, cheap energy, and way too high tax, permit and regulation environment.

DOGE is critical to getting the government out, and Drill Baby Drill / AI deals with energy. It would be great if MAHA would make a dent in the drugs and laziness aspect.

Assuming the Blackhawk is flying the River 1 route (a VFR route at 200' AGL down the center of the river) there is a big excursion after the bridge followed by a return to the course after passing the north end of the airport.

This leads me to suspect that the Blackhawk may have been on the River 19 visual approach using the DME, descending from about 900' AGL 3 nm north of the airport and then terminated that approach to descend to the River 1 route. I suspect that the excursion after the bridge was to provide spacing for a departure while they were still descending.

Mexico does have a lot of good engineers. But I think the real take-away is the lack of DEI and crushing taxes and regulation in the workplace makes Mexico superior to the former United States.

These are being fixed. The education gap is still going to be a problem when competing against Asian markets. This is where I'm hedging on automation plus the 80/20 rule where the US's 20% creative and STEM component tends to be better than other manufacturing markets.

I disagree with you about the Panama Canal because how did it become so weird that we might want it? We built it. The pan Armenians did nothing. Back it is likely they did do something, but not in the name of the country.. I think the French tried this first and when you look at the French when they do something abroad, they are not screwing around.
We made this thing and it cost our own country tons of lives. Why ever give it to Panama? I recall a few American politicians who had to give their birth certificates and said they were born in the Panama Canal zone. The Propaganda Press looks at Heritage America as conquered natives and are treated as slaves and livestock.

110 Another reason we should never listen to Libertarians:

Apparently the Donald has gone Liam Neeson: "WE WILL FIND YOU, AND WE WILL KILL YOU" as he orders an airstrike, in Somalia, allegedly killing ISIS leaders.

Justin Amash whines and says "Congress hasn't authorized war in Somalia - even against ISIS.... President's can't declare war. No Congressional authorization grants the power to target "terrorists" as a general group".

The problem with Amash (other than the fact he had no problem when Presidents not named "Trump" did that, and more) is that the Somalian government partnered with the US and the office of Somalia's government said "Somalia remains resolute in working with its allies to eliminate international terrorism and ensure regional stability".

It wasn't war, it was a joint taskforce invited by the Somalian government.

So that does answer the question I have been asking for some time:

Does a budget really matter because no one is going to deny cashing in a government cheque?

That is, agency X is allocated $4B, but they go ahead and spend $6B, do all the invoices get honored? And the answer appears to be yes, there is no cap to any agency's or deperatment's budget and now it explains where all of this magic money came from to underwrite the Left's adventures, pay-offs, junkets, DEI programs, NGO direct transfers, etc.

What they are also claiming is, that since FEMA, like every other agency, had no caps on spending, FEMA could have provided endless 5-star treatment to the Helena hurricane victims.

144 Commissioned officers can be good pilots in the Army. But they are usually flying a desk. It’s the Warrant Officers who fly all the time. I preferred always to fly with a crusty maintenance test flight warrant with about 5000 hours.

145 And Tito was a major battle. There’s no question about that. It’s quoted the number who died there in a small timeframe and it was definitely the worst of the Civil War.. in the battle you had the CSA at its lowest point and you also had union officers who had the CSA plans. Even then the battle was a draw.

Same was Gettysburg for some weird reason everyone thinks Gettysburg was this major turning point in the war. Of Gettysburg like I do my life goal is to be a Gettysburg license battlefield guide I could happily spend the rest of my life talking about Gettysburg to people who are interested.

But Gettysburg was not the defining battle of the Civil War. The Civil War lasted for two more years. If either or me thought Gettysburg solved the problem why would they have gone on for two more years?

I have probably gone to Gettysburg 40 times in my life and I do not live in the area. Wanna know why Gettysburg is famous? Gettysburg is famous because the union army decided it was famous. It was where the union army decided they would their own. I have no problem with that in fact, I love it. But that is why Gettysburg is famous.

The war went on for two more years, and Gettysburg was not relevant to either commanding general. I do say Gettysburg was important and one of the biggest things was union armies, chose to honor themselves on that specific battlefield. You also had Lincoln giving a famous speech on the battlefield. But none of those things can show that Gettysburg was a major turning point in the war and every serious historian will tell you it was not.

167 What I can’t figure out is if there is some scenario where 50 years worth of exported petrodollars that have never circulated in the US could somehow return to compete for goods and services. That would be …. not Optimal

168 Dunno, Biff. Military will fly more than a private pilot.
Took my son 2 years to accumulate his... so 100/year.
My guess is a military pilot would get at least twice those hours.
4 hours /week, 450 hours is still more than two years flying.
But the trainer had over 1000 hours. The ATC was running both military and civilian traffic at the same time. Have to switch frequencies to do that. I'm thinking the screw up was the ATC.
But it's all shear speculation.

173 Interesting Quint, I’ve been to several battlefields but not there. It’s amazing how walking a battlefield gives you insight you don’t get any other way.
But as to why Gettysburg was important, that battle combined with Vicksburg on the same day was the great inflection point of the war; after that, the South was never again a serious offensive threat.

174 One thing that struck me about reading in depth on the Civil War, everyone thought it would be over right away. Why, those Rebs will be crushed at Bull Run. Everyone got in their carriages and drove out to watch, while they had a picnic. Then it was thought by Christmas, the boys will be home.

Well, certainly by 1861, no doubt. Then certainly for SURE by early 1862. And no way later than 1863!!! It’s over. Etc

176 Question about the female Blackhawk pilot - unrelated to the accident - in case any military pilot types can answer.

There's a photo of her in uniform, in a helo, but her hair is down. Is that because a bun won't fit under the helmet and the military let's them wear it in a non-uniform manner?

184 173, Tom servo. You should go there because Gettysburg is the most heavily monumented place in America. National war colleges not from this country but from Europe and Africa go to Gettysburg to learn about tactics and history. There is an entire economy based on this you don’t see that at any other battlefield.

It is foolish for a civil war student to bash another and say they are wrong about certain things. It is better to encourage someone to learn a little bit more just because we are all learning. In my opinion, Gettysburg became famous after the war not during the war. There were two more years of fighting and the union army, and the northern cause was at its nadir long after Gettysburg. You had the wilderness campaign, and also Lincoln trying to be reelected. Lincoln thought he was toasted because of the horrible losses. His own army kept him in office and made history.

185 WWII also went on for more than two years after Stalingrad, and almost two after Kursk. But it's hard to deny their significance. Just saying the amount of time it went on afterwards is not necessarily a good indicator.

187 I apologize for all my typos and mistakes tonight. Of course, military national war colleges from this country go to Gettysburg. In fact, you would be surprised by how many different organizations go to Gettysburg to study leadership and many other important skills. Gettysburg may be our countries national shrine, the place we all meet to learn more about ourselves.

191 185, that is fair and I wanna be clear here. I don’t claim to be the decision-maker when it comes to the Civil War. I have studied this issue for decades, and I’m only telling you what mainstream historians say. The famous historian from UVA. Gary Gallagher said if anyone asked you to say what battle decided the Civil War he would tell you to write in Gettysburg. Then after you pass the test, he would tell you why that was not the case.

196 173, Tom servo, that is true it was an incredible one to punch. The problem is you can’t look backwards and no one told the north they were for sure to win. The weird thing about the Civil War is it was the union that likely was going to lose. They only won because they did not give up the fight. You can go back to war through history, even including our own revolutionary war, where the larger army simply gives up because they are sick of it.

198 Good morning, everyone.

My $0.02, went camping up near the Shilo battlefield, then went through it the next day. That was a horrific environment for both sides fighting down in that shallow bowl with artillery and mortar fire. Then the river boats with mortars, and the fight to get to the top of the ridge where the church is.

199 Ordinarily a Black Hawk has 2 pilots and a crew chief. He was sitting on the right side most likely.

A second crew chief perhaps could have avoided this collision, he would have been looking for traffic out the left side. This will come out in the investigation, and would seem reasonable recommendation when operating at the busiest airport around.

204 195 is Gettysburg lover I am going to allow this. There is something about antietam and for sure there is a difference. The irony for sure is it was worse at Gettysburg 50 or 60 years ago when they had a tram and an observation tower. You could do an entire history on the history of Gettysburg. That’s a crazy it is. I think I heard they’re over 10,000 books in the modern library database. This was three days of the war.

You’ll never hear me question the importance of Gettysburg but to me it is about studying true movements, leadership, etc. This is why groups from around the world go to Gettysburg. It is kind of our national laboratory. I’ll be that guy and I will say Gettysburg for sure was not what decided the word because everything you read and see shows it was not. It was important and I cherish every moment I spend on that battlefield.

208 I remember my first visit to Gettysburg. We camped nearby, and it was a fantastic visit. Had just finished reading "Killer Angels" for the first time and seeing the battlefield made a big impression on me. Visiting Antietam was for me a much more sobering visit, given the more constrained space and the amazing destruction of life. Gettysburg may have the most casualties of any battle in our history but Antietam, being the bloodiest single day, is one helluva thing to consider.
