At that level, the payback on a minimal reloading setup gets pretty short. IIRC, the 7.7 Japanese uses like a .311 bullet which might be a little hard to find just on its own. Posted by: Oddbob at February 02, 2025 07:16 PM (/y8xj) 41

In regards to the question would you fire a valuable weapon, it depends on the condition of said firearm.
A well worn 1911 from WW1, maybe just maybe a couple shots. Would rather have it on display and not risk breaking it. My newer handguns that were quite pricey? As many rounds as possible. Posted by: Scuba_Dude at February 02, 2025 07:17 PM (0XVad) 43

Evening all.
Range Report! The MGC had a Saturday meetup for a change. Me, Iris, Ed L, Blaster and Sra Blaster. 1911 day primarily but I wanted to shoot the Glocks first. I started with the new one with the green dot and my first few shots were off the mark, again low and left. I remembered the video about making sure the sight came straight off the arm so concentrated on that and Voila! Success. Fundamentals! Surprsingly, I shot the old Glock without an optic even better. I really love that gun. Then moved to the Kimber 1911 and it was just fun. Couldn;t stop smiling for the rest of the afternoon. I learned a lesson today. Something I had never come across before.
The 176 g boolets were much longer than my Sierra 168s and 175s. I used the same ogive meausurement 2.205”. When I got to the range the rounds jammed in the mag. Just a tad too long; I didn’t even think about case over all length. D,oh. So I chambered one round, ejected the mag and put 1 in the mag and reinserted. So, my AR 10 was a 2 round gun. Sad. So, range report: Saturday was a match day, 500 yard and 1,000 yard. Friday, as is my want, I went out to do some checking on some of my loads. I found the results to be less than desirable, 178 grain Hornady ELD M handloads. Match day I switched to my tried and true 174 Grain ELD VT loads and proceeded to do quite well. (I know the neck tension on the 178 ELD M's isn't where it needs to be. Bunch of cartridges I loaded before I figured out what was going on)
Incredible match format: 6 shots, no timer, @ the 500 yard rack, shoot at then move, not shoot until hit then move. This cost me, but, it worked out. From there were transitioned to 1,000 yards, same 6 shot format. I didn't do as well at the 500 yards as I should have, due to getting caught up in shoot until hit then move, but, did okay, in the end. The thousand yard plates though, went quite well. Hit the 10" plate with the second shot, transitioned to the 5" hit it then took the obligatory shot at the 2.5 inch plate and missed, went back to the 10" and put my last two shots on it. To say I was thrilled is an understatement. Posted by: blake - semi lurker in marginal standing (tT6L1) at February 02, 2025 07:25 PM (tT6L1) 61

He loves the 22LR Winchester gallery pump, and also wanted to try the Rossi 92 (I had him run 38s). At that level, the payback on a minimal reloading setup gets pretty short. IIRC, the 7.7 Japanese uses like a .311 bullet which might be a little hard to find just on its own. Posted by: Oddbob ------ 6.5 Arisaka is kind of an odd duck being both semi rimmed cases, metford rifling, and the original bullet was long and a bit smaller than the nominal .264 that the Swedes use for their 6.5 Mauser. The 7.7 Arisaka uses the same fmj bullets that a .303 Brit or even a Mosin does. Accuracy may vary based on bore wear. You can get away with it in an Argentian 7.65 Mauser which nominally shoots .313 bullets. Mail order Prvi in both 6.5 and 7.7 Arisaka are available from time to time at decent prices. Their are also rare runs that Hornady has done for Grafs and Sons, sources for Arisaka. Norma also makes the 6.5 Arisaka but unless they changed their tolerances (they apparently used an out of spec case to base their brass upon), accuracy is mediocre at best despite nose bleed prices. I have a Colt Python (from many years ago) that is a special edition, commemorating the Revenooers and the Moonshiners, with lots of gold inlay. Old Paco, who worked for the ATF when its main job was chasing bootleggers (and when, in fact, it was a unit within the Treasury department), acquired several of these special edition Colts (a couple of Pythons, and a couple of 1911s), and he passed one of the revolvers on to me. His badge number is engraved on the barrel, and the Colt medallion on the right side of the grip has been replaced with a section of his last badge. I don't shoot that one.

I do not shoot certain guns, only because I lucked into a couple commemorative editions in the boxes that were new or very shiny. One Winchester 30-30 (not especially collectable, but still....) and one special 10-22 for a corporate collectable.
My father's original Colt 1911A1 from 1918 has been essentially retired as well. But the list of non-shooters is relatively short....... Posted by: Chappyman66 at February 02, 2025 07:35 PM (ga83k) 78

Posted by: Skip at February 02, 2025 07:35 PM (fwDg9) 79
I normally won't shoot firearms that are 1) in high condition with finishes that are easily prone to wear (EX: Colt "bright blue" finished M1911A1s pre-WWII), 2) were made with steel pre-1950 or so (due to the risk of potential damage from out of spec overpressure ammo), or 3) are all original parts and difficult or impossible to repair or replace, especially for a high condition firearm. Even though I could shoot an early M1911 quite a bit, breaking or damaging a part will greatly reduce that firearm's value because a gun (especially a collector's item) is original only once.

Posted by: RI Red ======= Every round I shoot in semi automatic rifles is check gauged. Bolt actions are more forgiving but even an out of spec case can give a semi out fits. That is why I use small base dies for 5.56 and 308 to make sure that I don't get jams, etc. I expect shorter brass life from it but I purposefully avoided bolt actions in 308 or 5.56 so that all my brass for those rifle cartridges are fit to shoot in semi automatics. As usual, YMMV. Posted by: whig at February 02, 2025 07:37 PM (ctrM5) 83
I have something to share. Something wonderous, and rare. Rarer than a blue moon of blue moons of blue moons. Something so rare, that I suggest you sit, nay lay down before reading further.
Whilst perusing a thread on DU about a dinner party someone attended full of Gen Zs that left them with extreme angst, since they were bereft of concerns for Dem talking points, one commenter to the thread replied "Actually David Hogg just won Vice Chair of DNC, maybe there's hope????" But it was the reply to that that absolutely gobsmacked me. A ray of incredible insight of reality so rarely seen on DU: "And exactly what is David Hogg going to do, attempt to lobby for more gun control that is already despised and turns out more votes against us than anything else? Hogg is viewed by most Americans as Greta Thunberg with five o' clock shadow. He is not going to change one vote our way." Posted by: Duncanthrax at February 02, 2025 07:38 PM (a3Q+t) 84

Rossi 92....my friend has an early one that needed the loading gate issue resolved. However, once he did that I found that it ran reliably and was comfortable to shoot. That gave me confidence to look at them.

Well, I made a very fluky purchase at the Glendale Swap Meet today. Looking car parts, tools, toys, etc. had bought nothing, but was enjoying the fine weather and good company. Saw a nice little oak chest on a table. Asked the seller, "what's that, machinist tools, maybe?" "Nope, cigars." A bunch of them, along with a humidifier, and a digital humidity/temp display. With a dead battery. Cigars look pretty dry to me. But it's a nice box. Got the whole mess for twenty bucks. Most plentiful: Thompson, red label, 6.5" by 3/4 inch. Two dozen of them. Principes, 5" by 1/2", four of them. Two VSOP, same size as the Thompson, 2 Sinatra, also same size. Several others as singletons. Total 40 lung darts. I put water into the humidifier, and a battery into the monitor. It works.

My contribution to this weekend's DMV MGC outing were my three Colt 1911 shooters: an M1991A1 that I bought 30 years ago, a Colt Combat Commander that a previous owner gave a trigger job, custom sights, and stippling on the front strap, and my M45A1 Colt Marine. The M45A1 is the most accurate of the lot. The Commander comes in second, and the M1991A1 comes in third. That's purely because the M1991A1 sights are very basic GI style sights. Even the M1991A1 still delivered decent groups at 10 yards.

Anyway...guns!
Went to the range yesterday with Lazy Messenger and was doing side by side comparisons between the CZ P07, which is the gun I'm most accurate with, and the CZ P10c, a gun I've slept on in my collection. Mostly 'draw + fire' drills, to see how well the two guns 'point'. Then double taps. This is where the DA/SA CZ P07 is at a disadvantage. The P10C is a bit faster on target but accuracy...was a wash. Some targets the P10c was tighter, some the P07. Both guns are Quality. One is $300 now. Buy them. BUY THEM. Are good. Since I didn't inherit any firearms, old or not, everything I have was bought with shooting in mind. No safe queens at maison JTB. Probably the most valuable guns I own are Ruger Old Armys which usually sell for well over $1,000 these days. (I didn't pay but a fraction of that for any of them.) But as long as they are well maintained, which they are, shooting doesn't lessen their value.
Ammo prices could be a problem but I have the components to reload all my centerfire calibers, even the odder ones like 222 Remington and 357 Maximum. Posted by: JTB at February 02, 2025 07:44 PM (yTvNw) 97

So, second part of the Saturday match: The people who run the match decided we needed to do something a bit more challenging. They set up animal silhouettes are varying distances, 2 shots per. We spun a roulette style wheel to choose our targets. 5 targets total. The furthest target was 971 yards, closest was just under 500 yards, 476, maybe?
I'm thinking to myself, how do I work this out? I then realized they'd printed out a sheet listing the various silhouettes and distances. so, I grabbed my ballistcs app and put together a range card. I managed to get the job done, but, still missed far more than I should have. The 2" wide rabbit @ 476 yard was especially evil. I will never own one. I think you should treat a gun like a wife or girlfriend. You take them out and show them love and affection - by shooting them*. Gently, if necessary. ------- Oddbob is correct. Unless you are an experienced collector to distinguish bad rifles from good ones, cmp will sell you a sound shooting rifle and stand behind it. There are several traps out there for the unwary in buying Garands from private individuals etc. For example, some folks rewelded garand receivers which is of dubious safety and usually poor function. Another was that a few tried to cast receivers for Garands with indifferent success. Plenty of horror stories around about surplus rifles and the various bad things done to restore them well enough to claim they are shootable. Get a Garand from CMP and you have paperwork, a functioning rifle, and recourse to the CMP's gunsmith shop if necessary. Posted by: whig at February 02, 2025 07:51 PM (ctrM5) 113

If you're in Ohio, have you stopped at Camp Perry? You might be able to buy an M1 directly from the CMP there. Otherwise, you can order one from CMP. As for handguns, are your hand size and your wife's hand size about the same? If they are, then a shared handgun might work. But if you have bear paws and she's got a small, dainty pair of hands, it might not work as well. Ergonomics should be a big factor in pistol selection. If it doesn't feel good in your hand (or your wife's hand), it won't feel any better when you shoot it on the range. I think caliber comes in a distant second to a handgun's ergonomics. Still amazes me hitting a 10" steel plate @ 500 yards really isn't a challenge any more. Speaking of steel plates, I'm now the proud owner of my very own KYL rack. Guy I shoot with has the equipment to cut AR 500, etc. He offered to build me a rack for cost of materials. I said, "Okay, get me a quote and let's see what we can work out." Yeah, he showed with the completed rack at the match, told me. "Hey, here's what the materials cost if you don't want it, I'll just sell it, blah blah blah." I pretty much told him, "shut up and take my money." Even worse, I tried to slip him an extra $50 for his trouble and he gave it back. I told him, "Hey, you weren't supposed to count it!" As a range toy, go ahead. Posted by: Patrick From Ohio FWIW, most hammer fired pistols versus striker fire will normally be easier to rack and there are several choices there depending on size. I would go to a local gun range that rents firearms and try out several. Basically you have a tradeoff between concealability and shootability. Most people can handle a full size 1911 in 45 ACP simply because it is a large heavy gun that tempers the recoil of the 45 ACP. Go to a 3.5 inch slide in 45 ACP and it will be unpleasant enough to discourage practice with it. Going down a caliber or two to a 9 mm also means less recoil in the same weight gun. A 1911 in 9mm that has the 5 inch slide is a pussycat even with hotter +p 9mm ammo. Go to a polymer lightweight shortslide like a Ruger EC9 with a 3.1 inch slide, even a regular 9mm load will produce a surprising amount of felt recoil. The tradeoff is weight of pistol to tote and felt recoil. Posted by: whig at February 02, 2025 08:03 PM (ctrM5) 139

I will add that there are some real gems in those racks. Because I'm interested in shooting, I took a pass on a 1940 receiver because of a nasty little gouge near the muzzle that I know would endlessly piss me off.
I instead went with the post-Korea run because the condition was superior, best-rated bore, nice stock, etc. One of the vets hanging out near the sales desk (yes, it's a hangout) looked it over and asked where I found it, because it was so nice. A staffer wouldn't have it. "You dumb old fart, you picked that up not half and hour ago before putting it back! Don't start complaining now!" Come for the rifles, stay for the ambience. A few years ago my (insert group affiliation here) had a commemorative 1911 buy and they went with custom engraved Kimber Raptor IIs. I wanted one but could not see a good reason to spend that kind of money on a pistol I would not shoot. But sra blaster intervened and bought it for me for Father's Day (it arrived MUCH later) and so there it was. It is STILL the most expensive gun at the bottom of our pond.
But I shoot it. Because 1), its a good shooter. 2), with my kids for various reasons it isn't going to be an heirloom that passes down to generations as something cool. I don't know what it will be in the future. And it won't gain value just stitting there. So I am shooting it. Shot it yesterday, in fact. FWIW, most hammer fired pistols versus striker fire will normally be easier to rack and there are several choices there depending on size. Posted by: whig I agree but polymer automatics absorb recoil better than all metal guns, IME. So I'd lean towards those. Though, again, 1911s seem pretty popular with ladies as well as gents. It's not a gun for casuals for self defense, though. It does require practice to get working. Posted by: blake On some things, I have memory glitches too. Col. Cooper could very well have done destructive testing of an Arisaka that I never heard about. Or, I would not be surprised that Col Cooper knew PO Ackley as the gun world was much smaller in a way back then. Most of the big names in the field knew each other. P.O. Ackley was also a well regarded gunsmith and quite a few people sent rifles to him for rechambering, etc. often to one of his wildcat cartridges. He usually blew out the shoulders on older cartridges that gave them a bit more capacity and a bit different powder burning curve. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. sra blaster and I were shooting the Kimber Raptor IIs - they are seriously nice guns and shooting iron sights requires you to focus on fundamentals. Since it was 1911 day Ed L. brought a brace of them and most notable to me was the last of the breed USMC issue one I forget the exact nomenclature. But its a really nice bit of kit and shoots every bit as well as our Raptor IIs and that's pretty remarkable that GI gun is as good as something out of Kimber's Custom Shop. However tops in the 1911 game among the MGC remains swa's Kimber Aegis Elite Custom (OI) in 9mm. That gun is ridiculous how well it shoots. I have a NIB Colt M45A1 delivered to the USMC (but never issued or even shot after it left Colt) before being decommissioned that I intend to keep that way. The Cerakote finish proved to wear far quicker than the USMC specs thought. I have another commercial M45A1 in the later ion-bond FDE finish that is far better suited for shooting. As the swan song of the 1911 in US military service, I'll keep that decommissioned USMC Colt in its original condition as long as I can.

Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards ====== If you are talking about a compact versus a semi compact polymer, I would agree with you depending on the weight shaved off it. Glock's Model 19 was at the top of the sales chart for a long while because it had sufficient number of cartridges in the magazine, was easy enough to rack the slide, and weighed enough close to 30oz loaded to have less felt recoil than perhaps a steel framed semi auto would (grips though might alleviate that). Take any firearm, metal framed or polymer down to about 20 oz of total weight and shooting it is gonna be work and relatively unpleasant due to greater felt recoil. I have a feel good range story from today:
It’s 13 degrees and I have the 300 yard range to myself, until a young couple show up. He’s been teaching his GF shooting for the first time. Said she was dead on over at the tactical range with a 9 mm. He had her shoot some suppressed AR/M-forgeries and she was nailing it. After she rung steel consistently at 300 with a red dot, I walked over and said that she had to shoot my rifle. Boyfriend told her it was exactly the same style as what she had been shooting, just a bigger round. I put the suppressor on so the noise would be reduced. I had it dialed for a silhouette at 300. She took her time, got used to the bag and squeezed one off. Clang! BF liked the fact that the .308 made a loud impact on the steel, unlike the 5.56. I took a round out and laid it down on the table to show her the difference. Smiles all around. They were still there when I left. Nice date. Posted by: Ed L Ed L., Little reason to shoot a 125 gr screamer in 357 Magnum as the shorter barrel kinda of defeats the purpose. That particular load was designed around 4 inch and greater barrels. If you can find them, 100 gr. Corbon Pow'rball is insanely accurate, light recoiling, and works well using a Safari Land or an HTS speedloader. Hornady's 140 gr or the Winchester Silvertip in 140 gr are also are quite potent without the blast coming from a short barrel firing a 125 gr. I spent a lot of time shooting 357 Magnums during the 2000's and have been disappointed that ammo choices haven't advanced much in 357 Magnum since then. BTW, for those shooting older Smith and Wesson Model 19's etc., the 140 gr loads are kinder to your pistol's longevity as the 125's tend to cause them to wear prematurely with a steady diet of them. Smith came out with the L Frame because of that. Posted by: whig at February 02, 2025 08:30 PM (ctrM5) 195

Ed L., Little reason to shoot a 125 gr screamer in 357 Magnum as the shorter barrel kinda of defeats the purpose.
Posted by: Ed L Try shooting it with 140's instead of the 125 screamers. Ballistics are roughly the same but blast is much reduced. Even in a 125 gr sd load, you will get less blast when firing it. FWIW, there are some decent loads using Titegroup or W231 for the 357 if you ever get the itch to reload it that reduce significantly the blast from the 357 in 125 gr hollowpoints. Something like 1275-1300 fps loads in a 4 inch barrel which is more than sufficient to expand bullets instead of the 1400 fps+ screamers. Straightwall cartridges are easy to reload and a good chunk of reloaders start on a 38/357 revolver loads because it lowers the cost of ammo and you can tailor the ammo to your needs from pussycat wadcutters to critter killers in 357 magnum. As to what I collect? I like history, and it's neat to handle and use the actual weapons in conflicts. You gain a different understanding of what the soldiers went through and also ergonomics of the time. For example, .32 ACP today is generally derided as a mouse gun, but when you compare it with behemoths like the Astra 400 or even the c96 Mauser, and imagine how it would feel to carry them all day, day after day, .32 seems a decent idea. Fit and finish are also interesting, plus there's some strange stuff out there. I mean, if you want a Mauser Kar98k, you can find them in great quantities, but what about one made by Nationalist China during WW II? That's neat. Posted by: Former Gun Owner A.H. 244 43 Loaded my first .38 Specials this week, 148 grain Berry's Bullets double-ended wadcutters. Got down to the farm too late today to shoot, but raring to try them out tomorrow.
Amazing the teeny tiny amount of powder in a charge, and the very narrow range from minimum to maximum recommended load. Posted by: That SOB Van Owen ===== For someone that is very recoil averse, one could do worse than load wadcutters in a revolver as self defense ammo. Won't expand but will cut a .36 inch hole and penetrate enough to get into vital organs. Posted by: whig at February 02, 2025 09:06 PM (ctrM5) 252

CMP is finally shipping 1911s again because I got one this week. It’s a 1911A1, Ithaca slide and frame, serial 1444xxx so 1943 production. It was a service grade so the slide to frame fit feels pretty decent and not worn out. Need to break it down and give it a good inspection and cleaning before I take it to the range.

Posted by: Ed L ====== I started with a hand press, lee dies, and their included powder scoop. Did use their old hand primer for priming the brass. And used W231 powder. That reloading setup fit in a small box scarcely larger than a shoebox and costs even now about $100 bucks plus the powder, box of bullets, and primers--about another 60-75 bucks nowadays. Did it so I could have dead soft swaged lead158 gr semi wadcutter hollow points. Still saved money on reloading 38 Special after I loaded 100 rounds of those bullets. Something I seldom notice when discussing 357s for personal protection is the noise factor. That round is painful to hear even at the range unless your ear protection is good enough, more so from a snubby. Firing one in enclosed space without any ear protection would be so painful it might stop any needed follow-on shots. And you can say goodbye to your hearing for a while. A 38 special isn't quiet but not as damaging and physically disruptive as a 357. That's why any revolvers I have for home defence have 38s.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces upheld his death sentence for the 2009 Fort Hood shooting. Despite speculations and discussions about commutation, there is no evidence that his sentence has been altered. The process for military executions involves multiple levels of appeal, and as of the latest information available, Hasan's sentence remains in place, though the execution itself would still require further approvals, including from the President. Muzzle flash is a factor, as well. There are some loads with special powders to ameliorate that. It's worth trying out your SD load(s) at a range that will lower or turn off the lights for you. It can prove quite enlightening.
Posted by: Duncanthrax ======= True dat. FWIW, Silhouette (now Hodgdon's formerly Western Powders) is one reloading powder with flash suppressant in it. ====== I started with a hand press, lee dies, and their included powder scoop. 333 ... "Does Lee still make the old "nutcracker" type loading tool? I've never used one, but it seems like it would make for a compact reloading setup, although slow."
Yep! Lee still makes it and you are right, it makes for a compact reloading set up. I've used one for many years. It is especially handy for batch processing cases like depriming while in a comfortable chair. The package with the kit is about as economical a way to start reloading as there is. I have a Colt .357 revolver (3 inch barrel) and I use .38 Special ammo in it. It's loud, even with hearing protection. My ears ring anyway due to tintinitus, just rings a bit more post range visit.
Posted by: Puddleglum, drive by pew pew at February 02, 2025 09:55 PM (sAmhv) I always use both earplugs and earmuffs on an indoor range. It's too loud w/ just one layer of protection. I have mild tinnitus from my deployments to ODS, OIF, and OEF (land of the 24-hour generator). I don't need to make it any worse. Posted by: Ed L at February 02, 2025 10:01 PM (AiJK3) 399
You should track down the CX4 carbine, beloved by Morons of taste and quality.
Posted by: Former Gun Owner A.H. Lloyd at February 02, 2025 09:44 PM (ZOv7s) I took a quick look at a Hickcock45 review of the CX4. Sweet! Especially for a left-hander like me. Only wish it came in 10mm. Posted by: mrp at February 02, 2025 10:02 PM (rj6Yv) 400

Along with the Lee nutcracker style hand press, they still offer the Lee Classic Loader, which I call the Whack-a-mole style. It is slower than the nutcracker version but is the size of a big pack of cards. A few caveats: it can only neck size bottleneck cases and it's worth using case lube even with the carbide sizing die.
I have one for just about every caliber I own, even the long discontinued 22 Hornet, 222 Remington, and 12 and 20 gauge. Hint: You have to supply the hammer. Posted by: JTB at February 02, 2025 10:07 PM (yTvNw) 402

I have two guns that I rarely shoot: A very late manufacture Springfield Armory M1 Garand from CMP that probably was never issued, instead I shoot two other Garands, one has a 7.62 x 51 barrel, and a 1926 Hartford Arms .22 pistol that my dad bought in 1946. Thanks for hosting the gun thread Weasel!
