Trump Appoints New Acting Head of FAA
A good pick, says the former acting head.
The former acting Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Administrator Billy Nolen said during an interview that President Trump made an "excellent choice" in tapping Christopher Rocheleau as the agency's next leader. "It's a great decision. Chris, when I joined the FAA, was my No. 2. I think the world of him, and I think the president has made an excellent choice," Nolen said during his Thursday appearance on NewsNation's show "The Hill."Trump also ordered an investigation into the crash and issued another Executive Order instructing the FAA to elevate "competence" over DEI. What an idea, that the people in the towers keeping airplanes from hitting each other should be there do to competence and qualifications and not based on whether they read Ibram X. Kendhi or not.
As you know from yesterday, the FAA has been criminally understaffed for a year (or more) due to Biden refusing to hire qualified white candidates, leaving hiring open only for minorities. This is a fact; the understaffing of the FAA has been reported since at least as early as February, 2024, and there is a lawsuit of 3,000 candidates for Air Traffic Control jobs who passed test to be hired, but who were then put on hold so that the FAA could change the test to be "biographical," i.e., they ask you about your race and what your race has taught you about guiding planes in to a runway safely. The 3,000 white candidates who passed the real test failed to pass the "Are you Black?" test, because they're not. This was all by design. The FAA can claim that its Racial Ratios are "improving" because they're just refusing to hire white traffic controllers. And if the towers are manned by half the staff needed? Oh well. It's more important to make the DEI numbers look good!

ATC has been fucking a chicken for a while. So many close calls in recent years.
Shit, I was flying out of LGA a year or so ago and during take off the plane banked hard and dove before recovering and continuing to climb. A few minutes late the pilot came on and said that the accident avoidance software caused the plane to dive. And like... that was it, no one ever said anything else about it.
Seems like that shouldn't happen.

Washington air disaster, my take: There is a designated helicopter route on the river with an assigned ceiling of 200ft AGL. This route passes under the runway 33 short final approach, which is about 400ft AGL at the crossing point. For some stupid reason, it has been SOP there for this traffic to keep visually separate, with a vertical margin of only about 200ft.
Even though this shitty long-standing arrangement has resulted in several go-arounds in the past, pilots have been putting up with it. This is what needs to be fixed.
I don't know why the helo didn't see the traffic. I don't know why the controller did not instantly react to visual and audible Collision Alerts on his console. But at the very least, the dangerous route conflict needs to be fixed.

There are two sets of flying rules - Visual Flight Rules ("VFR") and Instrument Flight Rules ("IFR"). The joke is that IFR actually stands for "I Follow Roads" as following a road is easy navigation.
As DCA and Fort Belvoir are both on the Potomac River, my guess is that the helicopter pilot was flying "I Follow Rivers" and looking down when the collision happened.

Plane hits wind sheer and drops, or a 757 or other plane with particularly bad wake turbulence flies ahead of the helicopter, etc. etc. Not to mention the obvious issues with humans making mistakes (which is what it seemed like happened here).
It would be one thing if it were for emergency med evacs or something, but as a routine thing -- why are the helicopters anywhere near any approaches at a major US airport?
It just seems like a recipe for disaster.

I have a friend whose dream it was to become an ATC. He studied hard, took the classes, passed the tests, even got his pilot's license. Very gung-ho.
But he is a white male, and this was during the Obama Administration. They didn't want him, all the slots got filled by minorities and women who hadn't done all the prep that he had.

Well, if he had observed to the 200 foot ceiling allotted to helo traffic, there would have been no collision. Seems to me the tower should have seen him to be too high, also. Lot of blame to go around.

The rumors on the loony side of the web now are that it was murder/suicide. I really doubt that, and think there is no way to even suspect that unless we have the black boxes (which we don't yet) or have some other evidence like a blog post or struggle on the radio, but they would have been public so we don't have that either.

I don't know why the helo didn't see the traffic. I don't know why the controller did not instantly react to visual and audible Collision Alerts on his console.

My take on the accident. I think there is partial blame on ATC, I cannot attest to their workload. But usually ATC will advise you regarding traffic as i.e.; 445Romeo, your traffic is a Cessna twin @ your 10:00 3 miles, please report traffic in sight. From what I've heard, I did not hear that. Only "report CRJ in sight." At night, with all that light pollution it's hard to judge the speed and direction as well as size of an AC. I believe the helo pilots though they were looking at the same thing the controller was talking about. I think they were looking at the wrong aircraft. It will be interesting to know if both helo pilots confirmed to eachother. Or if only one confirmed. Ultimately they f'd up and it cost them all those lives sadly.

I don't know that DEI had anything to do, directly, with the crash, but it may well have accounted for the shortage in personnel, as thousands of qualified white job applicants were allegedly turned down for air traffic control jobs because of their race. in any event, DEI policies have been a problem at the FAA for some time.

- I have hear that collision alerts are off near airports because in that airspace you get too close.
- I have heard that it is very hard to see other air traffic against city lights, so the helo was probably obscured and the plane should have been visible to the helo, but harder with night vision goggles.

Plane hits wind sheer and drops, or a 757 or other plane with particularly bad wake turbulence flies ahead of the helicopter, etc. etc. Not to mention the obvious issues with humans making mistakes (which is what it seemed like happened here).
It would be one thing if it were for emergency med evacs or something, but as a routine thing -- why are the helicopters anywhere near any approaches at a major US airport?
It just seems like a recipe for disaster.

I think in the final analysis some weeks or months down the road the dismal performance of overworked and/or unqualified DEI ATC hires will be the single contributing factor to the DCA aircraft crash.
It's been a hornets nest of VIP military/government and commercial/general aviation for decades. Without a mid-air accident.
The only other accident I'm aware of at or near DCA is Air Florida flight 90 that crashed onto/near the 13th Street Bridge didn't hit another aircraft. It was related to weather (ice.) That was in 1982.

For those not in the know a good deal of aircraft certification work that the FAA does is actually performed by outside contractors or often by direct employees of the applicant aerospace companies being investigated for compliance findings.
This is not something new but has been the case well into the last century and before many of the people here were born. This is a consequence of the increased complexity of modern aircraft platforms and the complexity of regulations. Neither of those two things are ever going to change.
So, the FAA delegates it's finding of compliance to others and performs more of an administrative role in auditing and managing the delegate work.

I really doubt that, and think there is no way to even suspect that unless we have the black boxes (which we don't yet) or have some other evidence like a blog post or struggle on the radio, but they would have been public so we don't have that either.
So I think that very unlikely, but I do think Trump knows the pilot's name and history and knows the direction the investigation is going (pre-preliminary) and gave us a hint when he blamed DEI.

Apparently the pilots rely heavily on a third or fourth person to spot incoming aircraft. He also said that there's so much going on in the helo, it's possible for the non-pilot spotter to be engaged in other things inside the vehicle.
If true, that's insane. It's dumb luck this doesn't happen more often in such a packed airspace.

If you can settle for having the Buick smash into you, you have a much larger time window to plant your ass in the middle of the Buick's lane, and wait.

Yea, I've heard most of that too. When I was working on base and a Blackhawk was taking off there was almost always 3, 4, 5 people... minimum in it. I've seen them up close, never been in one, but they look cramped as hell. And hard to see out of.

There are qualified minorities out there. The problem is they get in on their own merit. The entire purpose of DEI is not to elevate competent minorities. It's to elevate incompetent ones. DEI is basically a full-employment act for incompetent, otherwise unemployable idiots.
Plus, DEI hires tend to come from leftwing backgrounds, and are thus generally dumb as rocks. Competent minorities tend to be more conservative, and thus are mostly shut out of the DEI ladder. Someone like Clarence Thomas would never ever ever be selected for a DEI hiring track.

There are qualified minorities out there. The problem is they get in on their own merit. The entire purpose of DEI is not to elevate competent minorities. It's to elevate incompetent ones. DEI is basically a full-employment act for incompetent, otherwise unemployable idiots.
Plus, DEI hires tend to come from leftwing backgrounds, and are thus generally dumb as rocks. Competent minorities tend to be more conservative, and thus are mostly shut out of the DEI ladder. Someone like Clarence Thomas would never ever ever be selected for a DEI hiring track.

Red State has an opinion article up on the crash from an experienced pilot that includes two newer videos. He points out that the helicopter was in a nose down attitude which further restricted vision and they were approaching the side of the plane where beacons etc. are harder to discern as they blend in with city lights. Good analysis, well worth the read.

Living in Anchorage, with several active airports sharing the same space, including jets, float planes, light planes, military planes and helicopters, both Army and Air Force, and the occasional stopover by a President, crazy airspace is the norm, not odd. Last time Biden came through, they shut down the entire airdrome for his stop, but that message didn't get out into the bush and some dude flew his float plane back from where ever, was greeted by an F-22, probably needed a change in underpants. The intercept happened just above my house. Most exciting. I'm amazed more accidents don't happen on a regular basis.

That flight path is "Helo Route 4" and is used constantly. One of the problems was that the ceiling at that segment is 200 feet and for reasons not yet known the helo ascended to about 350 feet.

In that disaster, the pilot used the rudder pedals too briskly, which caused the vertical stabilizer to snap off. Can't blame ATC, I guess.

People have noted how bright the landing lights were on the CRJ and asked how the Blackhawk managed to hit it. You have to understand, though, that the video that went viral of the crash was not the angle the helicopter was seeing. It was approaching from the side, and position lights, strobes, and beacons can very easily get lost in a city's lights.
Secondly, because helicopters climb in a nose-low attitude, the Blackhawk likely did not have a direct visual line of sight to the CRJ. Why did the military crew tell air traffic control they had the traffic in sight? It appears they misidentified a regional jet that was departing, further undermining their situational awareness. For more context, the Blackhawk crew was flying under visual flight rules, which means it was their responsibility to see and avoid any traffic.
To summarize, it appears (though nothing is certain) that the Blackhawk called the wrong traffic in sight and then mistakenly climbed into the regional jet without ever seeing it. That would make this a very tragic case of pilot error.

That can only be the case with night-vision googles on. Look at any video of a UH-60 startup and you can clearly see the cockpit visibility is not nearly that tight. Nor, as another poster says, is it true that the pilot/copilot can't see up.

There are pre-determined routes for both VIP/military traffic and those for commercial traffic. The airspace over the capitol city is highly restricted and DCA is literally right across the river from it, with the Pentagon next door.
The routes allow air traffic to flow into and out of this area. Deviations from the routes result in "bad things" such as fighters scrambled from Andrews AFB.
A military flight would have to be on one of the approved routes... even if it took them near DCA, which can't be helped because of the restrictions over the city proper.
An aeronautical chart with those routes marked up on it is available on the web. It's confusing. It's congested. It's been this way for decades.

"Training" flights aren't typically extreme maneuvers or anything. Just routine flights for pilots and crews to maintain proficiency...especially, as here, using NVGs and such. Asking why they flew so close to the airport is the same question you could ask any small one-prop civilian plane doing practice flights. They were in a proper flight corridor, getting proper guidance...but someone (more and more seemingly the helicopter pilot) fucked something up.
A lot of National Guard helicopter facilities are adjacent to local municipal airports...so they "train" in busy airspace all the time. Just like their trucks drive on the highway with civilian traffic.
Only extreme stuff (like Air Force Fighters practicing dogfighting) need huge swathes or dedicated land and airspace.
Baring some surprising answer to this, whoever planned the mission should be court martialed.

And that, my friends, is why I don't trust the experts. Because somebody needs to be looking at all those charts and maps and confusion and the idea of a helicopter throwing a cross body block on a passenger jet at night outside an airport - if the foolproof system breaks down just one time.

A lot of National Guard helicopter facilities are adjacent to local municipal airports...so they "train" in busy airspace all the time. Just like their trucks drive on the highway with civilian traffic.
The 123d Airlift Wing, out of Louisville KY, doesn't train in "busy airspace" anymore. Not since 1990. When their "touch and go" practice over Evansville, IN turned into a touch a destroy of the Drury Inn and a pile of civilians.
As I said, this "we do it all the time" stuff doesn't fly. The risk is not worth the reward. And why even the experts need some simple, common sense authority.

Commercial passenger air, freight air, CalFire, local police and fire helos, and National Guard F-15s and F-35s all share the same two parallel runways in the airfield here in Fresno. The F-15s make it difficult to use the phone here at work because of the noise (my shop is adjacent to FAT), but the F-35s are downright deafening. Luckily, the NG fighters only fly about 3-4 days per week.

Commercial passenger air, freight air, CalFire, local police and fire helos, and National Guard F-15s and F-35s all share the same two parallel runways in the airfield here in Fresno. The F-15s make it difficult to use the phone here at work because of the noise (my shop is adjacent to FAT), but the F-35s are downright deafening. Luckily, the NG fighters only fly about 3-4 days per week.

I'd say, what level of Yoorupean presence in Greenland would be enough to deter PRC or Russian aggression? It's all BS from Brussels anyway. Lead, follow, or get Eff out our way.

I am flying in 2wks and certainly hope I get a bipolar trans drawf to guide the plane in with most of my family on board. I have never worried flying and never will. I am sure I will have a cocktail regardless.
While the pilot trainee of the military plane appears to be female, 500hrs, I am glad I did't get on board and scream she was a transgender suicidal dwarf. I am waiting for experts as I trust President Trump's experts and him.
This tragedy certainly has refreshed Dim talking points to screech it is apparently President Trump's fault for not being in the air traffic control tower or piloting the helicopter.
The Dim burden of squashed down fury & angst built up for 2wks as a ripe pustule, and burst over the lives of these poor families.
