  • If you were waiting for an RTX 5090 or 5080 - which you weren't if you've been reading the reviews - they're gone. (Tom's Hardware)

Micro Center is sold out of both cards at all stores, though they only had 233 5090s in the entire country. Taiwan, where the chips are made, received an allotment of just 84.

In Australia, meanwhile, there aren't any. Not that many people care with a starting price of A$4000 for the cheapest model.

The 5080 - half the price for a chip half the size with half the memory - is more plentiful in the sense that there were a lot more for sale initially. It is also completely sold out.

3 Evening and morning, late toilers and early risers! 'Tis Friday, Freya's Day, the consummation devoutly to be wished!

I had only about five hours' sleep last night. Still sleepy, but not enough to go back to bed; and it's late now anyway. I've done my calisthenics and stretches. Decision time: a pipe, or a slice of toast w/ peanut butter? Or, let's go wild here, both?

7 Wolfus, I am not here often, only on the nights when I cannot sleep. Then I wait for Pixie, check out what you and Skip and other early risers are doing and go to sleep.
So I have many questions. Did you give that lovely lady, Miss Linda, an engagement ring for Christmas? If I understand correctly, you have been together many years in at least a few states and even I knew that's why she didn't tell you what she wanted for Christmas.

11 2nd. Have you decided where you are moving when you leave Louisiana? I was an Air Force brat and have lived in many places. I have found that the best place to live is in a small(ish) town outside of a larger one for medical matters and other amenities you can't find in a small town. I now live in WNC about an hour outside of Asheville. It is a wonderful place to live.

On the plus side, I'll sleep great tonight.

Hi, Akua,

No, no engagement or ring. I'm not sure where we are, or where we might be going. She won't discuss my retirement or the idea of moving, and her passivity about the subjects is tamping down my own excitement and taking some of the fun out of it. She doesn't want to move, is the problem I can see. And I can't stand it here and badly need a change. So, I'm stuck. Any ideas?

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at January 31, 2025 04:23 AM (omVj0)

14 So with it hitting 71 degrees yesterday, and me being somewhat bred, I decided to clean the outside heat-pump heat exchanger coils.

Taking off the fan and all the side panels gave me good access to spray the professional cleaning solution on everything, and then about an hour of hosing it out in the reverse direction from the inside out.

Lots of crap and dirt got flushed out with about 20% of the surface area matted over on the outside.

By the time I got everything dried back together and ready to run it was down to 65% outside air temp, so I ran it in the heat mode with no supplemental heat and used the infrared thermometer to check air vent outlet temp.

Significant increase in heat output.

So we will call that a win for the team.

Akua, that's my idea too. SW Indiana looks good on the 'Net, but I've never been there and have to see what the people and roads are like. (I'm utterly sick of driving on the bad streets here.) A smaller place outside of a middle-sized city where I can get my car worked on or find a doctor sounds good to me.

Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at January 31, 2025 04:30 AM (a1415)

19 That's another stumbling block: that Linda will probably not want to live in a quieter, smaller town. She doesn't drive and won't learn, and if there are no buses for her to go places like the library, I'll be driving her everywhere. Which I do a lot of now.

22 Anyway: Tomorrow I have to work on my car. The USB ports have stopped working -- the in-dash infotainment system says "No Media Available." Before I take it to a shop or the dealer (I understand the hub can be replaced), I'm going to disconnect and reconnect the battery, reboot the car. It worked a year or so ago when the main instrument readouts went blank on me -- no speedometer was no fun!

If that doesn't work in this case, well, we'll see. I like having my music on a flash drive readily available if I can't find a radio station I like. Which is getting difficult without paying for Sirius or something.

I gave her some lessons back in 1997, and she did fine and went for her license. They flunked her for cutting a corner a little hard (I didn't think the DMV flunked *anyone* on a driving "test" in this town), and she was, I think, ready to try again. Then I got my job in Denver. When she joined me there, I didn't think learning was a good idea there -- too many cars and too much traffic. But when we came back to Da Swamp, she refused to learn.

You can't discuss something -- driving, retirement, moving, buying a house -- with someone who remains silent, then changes the subject. I've told her I don't want to leave without her, but that elicits no response. She's hoping I'll wake up and want to stay here; I'm hoping she'll wake and want to flee this place.

45 Your in a tough situation Wolfus.

Maybe a bit of the grass is greener syndrome.

You need to get it out of your system.

Start making plans to go on a big loop covering the territory you are interested in. Spend about a month, say June when it's nice but not too hot. Look up each town and find out when the festivals are. Read the local papers. Find out where the old timers eat. Go into data acquisition mode.

The more you learn the clearer your options will become.

"Colorado’s wolves could be east of the Continental Divide for the first time"

Durn things won't stay where you put them. Initially localized to the area around the headwaters of the Colorado River, north of I-70, at least one has been tracked down around Leadville, into the headwaters of the Arkansas River.

Oddly enough, a person was killed in a wild animal attack just a few miles from our cabin in recent weeks. (More likely a mountain lion, but no official determination has been made)

64 And then we have Daytime Running Lights (DRL's).

What design engineer thought it would be a good idea to have the front driving lights illuminated all the time, and apparently have the dashboard lights come on as well.

Yet NOT have the tail lights light up?

So as it gets dark out, the dash lights are on, therefore my headlights must be on, right?

But the back of the car is completely dark.

Every night I see cars up ahead with no tail lights on, but the front of the car is all lit up.

Not sure what make/models it is, but they're out there.

Since we don't do anything without it squaring firmly with American regulations, and since vehicle manufacturers tend to want to make things standardized across the American and Canadian markets, I suspect it's been solved on your side of the border too.

But there's a lot of cars out there since DRLs became mandatory as part of the manufacturing process back in 1995/1996. Those won't be addressed by the new regulatory changes.

If Maryland is anything like SE Lousy-ana, they *don't* operate or maintain their cars -- and more likely SUVs or trucks now -- safely. The disproportion of pull-overs is because of their high proportion of failure to be safe or to maintain. (Here, though, cars with a headlight out or that are driven as though the operator thinks he's Stirling Moss are largely ignored by law enforcement.)

You know, I have no idea if my '16 Buick turns on the taillights when the DRLs are on. There's a sensor atop the dash that reads light levels and turns things on, so I suppose if it's dark enough for the system to think they're needed, the taillights are burning too. But I don't know.

I have fond memories of attending that show once when I was younger. Even better was when my 9 year old son and I were able to join my at the time 80 year old dad and his 92 year old brother a few years ago. They grew up in Saginaw TX so it was a trip home. It was unspoken but it was their farewell trip. Both gone now.

I'm still unpacking that stunt, trying to figure out, how, in their few minutes of allotted time, that Onesies were going to be the take down.

"Are you for or against the Onesies" assumes a totalitarian mindset. That is, Sic Bern's team of retards who came up with these props had to go out and search for them and then buy them. Up until that stunt, I had no idea that they existed. Then when they brought these novelty garments out, demanded some sort of rebuke or endorsement.

The appropriate response would be: "Why should anyone care about some slogan?" Am I supposed to be "For or Against" a shirt claiming the wearer is from a particular university, a vegan or is into Cross-Fit? Does every single thing require condemnation or endorsement? This is what you get when you ban firearms.

TBH, from a self-defense standpoint, knife defense skills are technical and highly perishable, whereas gun defenses are not. That is, my chances of survival are much greater if the perp's weapon is a gun rather than knife.

Furthermore, outside of the screaming and yelling that occurs when people are being murdered, guns are a beacon to the crime scene, in fact ShotSpotter is a LE tool to alert and locate real-time shootings. There is no analog for knifings, poisonings, vehicle-related or blunt instrument assaults.

I don't know how they can criminalize anything that can cause another person to bleed. My dad had to go to a Doc In A Box when he got severely cut installing roofline rain gutters. Outlaw rain gutters?

168 Akua, that's my idea too. SW Indiana looks good on the 'Net, but I've never been there and have to see what the people and roads are like. (I'm utterly sick of driving on the bad streets here.) A smaller place outside of a middle-sized city where I can get my car worked on or find a doctor sounds good to me.

169 I'm a retired pilot and night flying is a challenge, especially around the big, big airports. Regan National is so restricted in no fly zones (White House, capitol, etc that you have to be on top of it fly in there.. Once away from those areas, its easy as radar and other sensors keep you out of trouble. Airplane navigation lights, ATC can only do so much. I believe it was the crew of the helicopter just made the mistake of which plane they were looking at, and didn't see the CJ right ahead of them. I have no reason to blame anyone, it was just a mistake or human error. Of course the MSM will confuse everyone with their speculations.

180 What is truly mystifying is PAT25 veered out over the river along with busting the altitude cap of 200ft before then impacting the Bombardier which was descending at the exact same moment through 400ft.

On that route PAT25 should not have gone above 200ft until after it had passed a bridge that was south of Reagan.

The chord shapes are just C, G, E, F etc
