Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Wednesday Overnight Open Thread - February 5, 2025 [TRex]Good evening Horde. The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the overnight variety. This is the Wednesday night ONT."Whiskey in the Jar," a song about a notorious Irish highwayman Patrick Fleming who was hanged in 1650, has become one of Ireland's most beloved songs, a true rebel air that stirs the passions. Fleming was no hero. He murdered, robbed, and maimed rich and poor alike, including women and children before being hunted down. He made a legendary escape from his death cell by scrambling up a chimney but was eventually recaptured. In death, he acquired a heroic air and many poems were written about him. Historian Alan Lomax says songs of highwaymen attacking the agents of the crown were very popular with Irish and British peasants. The folk of 17th century Britain liked and admired their local highwaymen, and in Ireland (or Scotland) where the gentlemen of the roads robbed English landlords, they were regarded as national patriots. Such feelings inspired this rollicking ballad. The history of Irelands beloved "Whiskey in the Jar"The song first gained wide exposure when the Dubliners, an Irish folk band, performed it internationally as a signature song, and recorded it on three albums in the 1960s. Ozzy Osbourne will reunite with all of the original members of Black Sabbath for the first time in 20 years, in a gig that will be his last and that's being billed as the "greatest" heavy metal show ever, promoters said Wednesday. The band, one of the most influential of all heavy metal bands, will headline "The Back to the Beginning" show on July 5 at Villa Park, home of the Aston Villa Football Club in Birmingham, England. The concerns were prompted by media coverage of a report for the Scottish government by the independent Scottish Animal Welfare Commission, which published its recommendations on responsible domestic cat ownership last Monday. Among its proposals, which included encouraging vaccination and neutering, the report also suggested that consideration be given to "containing" cat ownership in certain rural areas that were also home to red-listed bird species. It is estimated that domestic cats kill 27 million birds in the UK each year.Wait a minute. A commission in Scotland produced a report on "responsible domestic cat ownership?" Yep. 56 pages worth. You will be relieved to know that the report currently does not "recommend making it compulsory to neuter all owned cats." But "[t]his option will be kept under review by SAWC, in order to take into account of future research into alternatives to surgical castration, such as chemical implants." Like every other good online conspiracy theory, this one looks more true than false. Written correspondence can be sent to moronhobbies at protonmail dot com. Are you lurking? Come out and play. TRex loves it when a plan comes together. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)Posted by: Blanco Basura - Z28.310 at February 05, 2025 10:00 PM (lUFok) 2

Years ago DARPA or DOD or somebody developed a suite of “less than lethal” weapons or active denial systems, for crowd control and riots.
I’ve wondered why they haven’t been deployed. One is a kind of heat gun, nobody will want to stay in the area, getting uncomfortably warm. Another, nicknamed the “Brown Note”, is a specific audio frequency that causes the target to lose control over his bowels. Even Eddie Van Halen couldn’t do that. So, I guess it was 34 years ago, due to peculiar circumstances, MiladyJo and I ended up dumping the kids on her mother and flying to New York for a week that included seeing Saturday night and Sunday matinee shows of the Blue Man Group. That was the day after their first appearance on Letterman, although Professor Internet would not give me an exact date.
It was interesting to see that shot of the theater's seating. We were right there. Both shows were amazing. For the Saturday night, we ended up in the basement — tubes (the theme of the show) had been strung around, from the basement to the lobby and everywhere, and before the show started, folks were talking to each other through them. The Sunday matinee included many kids, and the manic nature of the show (throwing rolls of toilet paper unrolling over the crowd, among other audience involvement) had the kids going wild, running in the aisles. So much fun. Gee, those guys got old. (He wrote with creaky fingers.) Posted by: mindful webworker - tubular at February 05, 2025 10:32 PM (k7PwS) 128

Have the helicopter hover so the guys in back with automatic weapons can shoot the sh!t out of the good guy's car coming or going on a straght road, or taking a hairpin turn? Or hover to get an easy shot at the good guy with your helicopter's machine gun or missiles? Nope. A couple things about USAID. I'm not a big fan of someone else deciding what charitable foundations I support (if I want to support any at all). And, a big part of USAID is charity (even done through the Vatican in some cases). I'm talking about the original purpose of the program.
In some cases, such as Iraq, I can see the necessity of the program. Sort of a "you break it, you bought it" sort of deal. There are, of course, catastrophic events where the US is in a position to assist. And, we do on an individual basis. If the US Govt. is going to pursue a humanitarian gift, then is should be done as an individual vote in Congress....NOT a hand out decided by non-elected functionaries with who allow politics to shape their "altruism." Congress is lazy and unwilling to do the work in such cases, and pawn it off on non-supervised career politicians. USAID should be so small, and structured that it can be handled on a legislative basis that requires a vote to enact...not a separate agency to act as a clearing house. Needed to be said. And now back to your regularly scheduled programming. Posted by: Orson at February 05, 2025 10:45 PM (dIske) 163

A Federal bureaucrat on Bluesky explains what to do when the DOGE people show up:
I sincerely don’t know why people aren’t physically stopping those dorks. Move shit. Lock doors. Lose the keys. Everyone switch seats. Turn off all the lights. Switch the signs on the elevator lobby. Make the settings all silly. Use a different language. Wear costumes. Fill rooms with balloons Anything they want, hide it or mislabel it. Anything they plug in, unplug it. Remove light bulbs. Move cubicles around so they hide some of the doors and when they leave the room move them again so they hide different doors. Play really loud music. Think like a cat and sabo tabby yourself a mess" These geniuses can't figure out why Trump won. Posted by: nerdygirl at February 05, 2025 11:32 PM (0Htd1) 277

While working for EDS in the Kansas City area, I got to tour the Pontiac Grand Am factory. EDS was a subsidiary of GM at the time.
It was pretty amazing watching the robots and dunking cars in paint. Most of the line work was still done by humans. Got to the finished section and there is this huge guy leaning over the hoods of the cars buffing them. Problem was he was wearing a large metal belt buckle and was just scratching the hell out of the paint. Posted by: Beartooth at February 05, 2025 11:33 PM (3Ev2O) 281

Walmart is so poorly run, I don't see how they turn a profit. I routinely buy clothing at about 70% off.
------ It's not about the cheap, imported crap merchandise. Not anymore. They now offer credit cards. And do "check cashing" (probably mostly for ill iggles, what don't have bank accounts) tied to "reloadable debit cards". Interest charges! Fees! Also... they try to screw their vendors with various huge penalty clau$e$ in the contracts. Probably what drove off most of the domestic products. IMO. These companies know how to make money. Just because something is on discount doesn’t mean they are losing. How many other things do you buy since you already spent the time and money to go there? As an example, I learned that our state liquor stores will often give massive discounts for booze that they don’t want to carryanymore simply because it would cost them much more to ship it somewhere else.
Another thing about these retail outlets. You have a lot of people saying they will never shop at Costco again. The reality is Costco makes very little on the items they sell. It is not a secret that over 70% of their profits come from memberships. If you ever want to hurt Costco, just don’t renew your membership but not shopping there isn’t going to hurt them as long as your membership is paid up. My personal advice and it doesn’t really matter because it’s just one guy, but I don’t think a Costco boycott is going to work for many reasons. No one should shop there if they truly don’t want to of course that’s the case. But don’t get your hopes up about a large swath of the country abandoning Costco, and them changing course. It could happen for sure, but I don’t see it. Posted by: Quint at February 06, 2025 12:35 AM (IM0Pp) 382

Priceline used to allow you to bid on gas. You could also buy groceries in advance, but that thing ran into major problems. I remember I bought a lobster once on Priceline, but the weight of the lobster was higher at the store and no one could figure out why the sale wouldn’t go through. I still look back at investing in the late 90s and I would never of guessed that Priceline would’ve been one of the biggest winners from that era. At the time they were only famous for having William Shatner as a spokesman.

Patrick Fleming reminds Orlok of another bold highwayman, Dennis Moore, who greeted many a carriage with a brace of pistols, declaring "Stand and deliver!" He too had a song:
Dennis Moore, Dennis Moore, galloping through the sward, Dennis Moore, Dennis Moore, and his horse Concorde. He steals from the rich, he gives to the poor, Mr Moore, Mr Moore, Mr Moore. He initially fell into the trap of taking only lupins from the rich and wealthy, items for which the poor had no use. He then switched to stealing from the rich, to the point that the poor were now rich themselves. His ethics suggested some articles should be returned to the wealthy. This altered his theme song to "He steals from the poor and he gives to the rich, silly bitch." By the end, Dennis is ruing the near impossible task of redistribution of wealth. Also, the English were very pissed off about the Anglo-French Concorde program for reasons I still am not able to decipher. Posted by: Count Orlok at February 06, 2025 01:09 AM (mk4vr) 431

Congrats on receiving a half years pay with no effort.
Posted by: Miflin at February 06, 2025 02:48 AM (aA6YN) That's snotty, and the rest of your comment is just as bad. Plenty of private employers offer severance when they RIF. If TCN wants to take advantage of the offer, why is that a bad thing? Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at February 06, 2025 03:26 AM (g0MSz) 460

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo Yep - JPMorganChase did a similar buyout/RIF with some of us getting a year of severance. It sure eases the transition to the next chapter. Posted by: Tonypete at February 06, 2025 03:37 AM (WXNFJ) 461
Cheaper than the alternative.

Far be it from me to second guess Trump or Elon, but I would have preferred the initial "retire or be fired" salvo had been confined to DC.
I know several Federal employees who, like our own tcn in AK, are good people and excellent employees. My Aunt Betty is taking the buyout because most in her office are, and she doesn't want to be left doing the work of 6 people. She is a wonderful person; at one point, I wondered if she wasn't one of the whistle blowers a few years back. She is definitely wondering what it will look like once the dust settles, and doesn't want to be the only one left trying to put Humpy Dumpty back together again. She supports the mission, but wishes they were using a scalpel instead of a chainsaw. She does acknowledge that speed is crucial in an operation like this, keeping the enemy on their toes and not giving them time to counterattack. ( She thinks there's going to be issues with judges slapping things down again) The next 4 years are gonna be a helluva show. Posted by: Tammy-al Thor at February 06, 2025 03:56 AM (Vvh2V) 463

My Aunt Betty is taking the buyout because most in her office are, and she doesn't want to be left doing the work of 6 people - I suspect that, if they could speak honestly, the two or three (or one) good employees in the office would acknowledge that they're already doing 80%+ of the work of the other 6. And, unless it's something where a certain level of staffing/manpower is actually needed (24 hour infrastructure*, for example), get rid of half the staff and hopefully have a sincere discussion about "Would you rather be paid more and do their work that you're already doing, or be paid the same and continue watching the other employees be paid the same, too, while you do their work so they can coordinate and run their side gigs on federal time?" * and with automation even that is often a single person job on the off shifts Posted by: Boron Cobbie - You can only be a feminist in a 1st world patriarchy where men allow it at February 06, 2025 04:16 AM (OjzTI) 464
Please forgive me as I meant no disrespect. She always seemed to me to always the first to put her shoulder to the stone and give her all.
Her frustration with the federal bureaucracy she has written about often. Pax vobiscum. Posted by: Miflin at February 06, 2025 05:02 AM (aA6YN) Processing 0.09, elapsed 0.0847 seconds. |
