It's great to have friends with technical skills.
But, as you slowly learn and hone those skills yourself, it's sometimes good to go back and check the work that was done. That way you can find things like mis-wired Cat 5e modem cables and such that have your home wifi seriously degraded. I have one CAT 5e cable in my house with precisely one bad line. (I'd have to hook up the tester again to tell you which one it was.) That took some perverted skill to pull off by the builder.

"That took some perverted skill to pull THAT off by the builder."
We used a custom home builder who wasn't up to the task (the sub they used for the data/sound wiring was better than a lot of their other subs, so I can't really bitch about them). There's an NDA involved due to arbitration, so I can't name the builder. Posted by: Richard Cranium at January 30, 2025 04:41 AM (76e6b) 28

"Mis-wired how exactly?"
Things like White, Brown/White reversed at one end of one cable. Open connection on Blue in another. Lose connection at one of the keystone jacks. Multiple runs where jacket was not inserted far enough, preventing the jacket from being compressed, and over the max 1/2 inch of twisted pairs exposed outside of the jacket. So the house has Cat-5e wired to a total of six locations, and a total of four routers, with three set up in AP mode, basically creating a poor mans mesh wifi system feeding into the main router via a powered ethernet switch. Seems faster and more stable now. Mostly, more stable. I do wish that Spectrum had higher upload speeds than the offered 20 mbps, but I'm getting 600mbps download pretty consistently now. @29/Village Idiot's Apprentice: "Things like White, Brown/White reversed at one end of one cable. "
Well at least that's easily fixed by cutting the end off, and crimping a new one on with the wires in the proper configuration (ensuring which standard, either T568A or T568B was used on the other end, and following that on the end you're putting a new connector on.) "Multiple runs where jacket was not inserted far enough, preventing the jacket from being compressed, and over the max 1/2 inch of twisted pairs exposed outside of the jacket." Okay, THAT is just sloppy work on the part of who did it. Your configuration with multiple APs seems quite reasonable though. Due to the age of my house, I opted for a wireless bridge between two APs using the 5GHz radio to connect the upstairs AP to the downstairs one, then I use its 2.4GHz Radio to act as the AP for any devices upstairs, and I use OpenWRT firmware on the routers. It's powerful, but getting the configuration "just right" can be a pain. Making things more challenging is that OpenWRT documentation is all on a wiki, and many of the pages are specific to older versions, and thus out of date. *sighs* Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at January 30, 2025 05:03 AM (O7YUW) 35

"Well at least that's easily fixed by cutting the end off, and crimping a new one on with the wires in the proper configuration"
Yup, exactly what I had to do. Now keep in mind that all this internet/wi-fi/ethernet knowledge is something that I am picking up late into my 29 years of life so far. So the learning curve has been rather steep. Starting with..." Why is there this bundle of blue wires coiled up on this ATT box on the side of the house". Which was really brought about when here on this very blog we went through a cut the cable movement, and I decided to see if putting a TV antenna up in the attic. So yes, there is a very nice digital HDTV antenna up there, and I don't pay a dime for cable television. And Wi-fi coverage oozing out of every room in the house. But it's been a journey of learning and discovery along the way. Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at January 30, 2025 05:12 AM (a1415) 39

Found an interesting statement about the crash from Doug Rice, a retired American Airlines pilot. He says that TCAS (Traffic Collision Avoidance System) is inhibited below 700 feet, so that may have not alerted the pilots that they were in danger of crashing. (The analysis of the black box recordings should help to verify that theory.)

Well, I had a nice politics free day off. Came back to little notes on computer about the terrible plane and helicopter crash as well as Democrats behaving badly at the hearing on RFK Jr. ( They certainly like to shriek, don't they?l as well as some story about the Episcopal Bishop who rudely lectured Trump having new people come to the church and giving her a standing ovation and talking selfies with her. What an embarrassment she is! My cynical self says the people won't be back. They just are happy for her to have taken a cudgel to Trump. And nope, the pastor shouldn't be having a fan club of people wanting selfies with her or giving her a standing ovation for what marred what was supposed to be a prayer service.

Headlines from Canada:
"Freeland promises to slash cabinet and PMO in half if elected Liberal leader" Why would I believe a word that comes out of that woman's mouth? She's just doing exactly what Trudeau did: Promised a bunch of good sounding things only to do exactly whatever he wanted once he got into power, ignoring his promises. "A Senate stuffed with Liberal bagmen is Trudeau's gift to Poilievre (PM plans to appoint 10 more senators before he leaves)" Of course he is. From the article: " During his time in office, Trudeau has appointed 90 of the 105-seat chamber." And the remaining 10 appointments brings it up to 100 out of 105 seats being Liberal Party appointees. That's not broken at all. Nope. Everything is fine. *deep sigh* Okay that's enough. I have work to go do, and I can't afford any more time to the three ring circus that is Ottawa. Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at January 30, 2025 06:21 AM (O7YUW) 82

Seems like the controller could have turned the hawk parallel and opposite to the path of the CRJ or even asked him to do a circle for spacing. Not sure why he had the two in such close proximity and permitted them to continue without maneuvering one of them.

"DO YOU SUPPORT THE ONESIES?!"
I fully understand why people in the audience were laughing at Sanders, who not only is stupid and perverted to be thinking of infant onesies, but the staff also provided visual props. The staffers talk to each other, they attended the same schools, they sleep with each other, they knew this stupidity was coming, and no one said "hey guys, this really looks childish and petty". They went for it, knowing full well that this would be televised, that each inquisitor had only a few minutes per round with Kennedy, and this was their best shot and best argument/smear against Kennedy. I know it's almost a maxim that people don't like "combative", but really it's probably that people don't like combative and stupid.
Every single candidate for a post under a Republican Administration has to go into those hearings knowing that every single Democrat and a chunk of Republicans hate them. They think that their lofty positions protect them from their shitty behavior and every insult they lob will be gleefully repeated by the enemedia. The candidate could be so civil that Miss Manners would ask them for advice and it would come out how mean, ignorant and out of touch they are. So yes, I think scorched Earth is a good start when they start answering questions, followed by pantsing reporters for asking stupid questions later. The Juan Browne video on the crash was very interesting even though I didn't catch all of what he was describing. One comment that sticks with me is that helicopters skip across the Potomac from Bolling all of the time and he speculates that the copter was watching the incorrect plane after being alerted by atc. There was a plane departing while the crashed plane was landing. He also commented that the copter wouldn't see the front light on the plane since they were approaching from the side of the plane.

It's kind of a problem if you look at it the other way around too.... staffers aren't *supposed* to know anything. They're basically interns. Apprentices. They come out of whatever diploma mill they got sent to not knowing shit about shit, and the higher-ups in whoever's office they get assigned to are supposed to show them the ropes. Teach them how the sausage is made. That sort of thing.
Instead, the "higher ups" are idiots themselves, who still don't know shit about shit thirty years after graduating, and the soppy little dickheads getting hired think they already know how to Fix Everything, so now there's just this gross little closed-loop terrarium of stupidity and buttfucking going on. and from now on whenever a comment is added I receive 4 emails with the same comment. Is there a way you are able to remove me from that service? Cheers! Posted by: Free new register at January 31, 2025 02:24 AM (sF+N8) 190
