Musical Interlude

Song is Everything Now by Canadian band Arcade Fire. Anime is Ano Natsu de Matteru - Waiting in the Summer - which is sort of but not exactly a retelling of the older Onegai Teacher only better.

I like this video more than the original one released by Arcade Fire themselves. The anime is bittersweet, where the original music video looks like Nebraska after the zombie apocalypse burned itself out.

Evening and morning to all the late toilers and early risers on this last Tiu's Day of January. 'Tis 51 F. here, damp but not raining, with a high today expected around 61. I could live with this for more than the two months a year we get here.

6 Yes, I suppose it's possible that tariffs will make some imported products more expensive. But we can grow or make a lot of that stuff nright here. And with a little time, energy prices can come down, making things easier on everybody. And if Trump can manage to reduce taxes again, and maybe even de-tax Social Security, it can even out.

Speaking of taxes, I did a rough back of the form calc of my taxes. Looks like I'll get about $200 back. At first I thought with horror, "I've gotta send them $4000 --!?!" But then I realized I hadn't applied the standard deduction for 65+. Much better.

IRS provides a Social Security worksheet for you to compute how much, if any, of your SS is taxable. You go through 15 steps . . . and (for me at least) it winds up being the exact same as if I simply multiplied my total x .85.

33 For decades, it seemed that San Mateo County’s cut flower industry would never stop growing. Each year, statistics released by the county revealed expansion: in 1950, 2.8 million square feet of greenhouse flowers; in 1960, 3.2 million square feet; in 1970, 9.6 million square feet.

“Most (cut) flowers in the United States were grown in California” during those years, said Michael Reid, a University of California, Davis, researcher who specializes in horticulture. By 1979, these crops — grown to be cut for floral sales — represented a nearly $15 million a year business in San Mateo County, especially in coastal areas.

Those days are gone. Reid estimates that less than 10 percent of cut flowers sold in the United States now come from California, much of the trade having shifted to Colombia and Ecuador. The state continues to be the leading domestic producer of the crop

My boss wants us to use Magic School AI for a week and explain what we used and what we liked best. No negatives.

There are negatives.

Already, I see that the grade levels are fake; there's no difference between 5th grade and 11th grade assignments. I corrected a lot of awkward English; "gonna" is bad grammar and "they/them" doesn't match the antecedent "mother". Unless your mom is a circus freak; in which case, carry on.

Also, I now understand how French writers wrote the Spanish script for that trans musical everyone is slagging. It goes from a stilted formality to slang.

It creates lesson plans that are pure crap but can be uploaded to Google Classroom. This is terrific for mediocre teachers who don't have time to do their jobs and for administrators who think once the lesson plans are complete, any warm body can teach them.

We had a fairly wet summer compared to average (note the use of the word average, not 'normal'. There is no 'normal' in weather). Do you think they have seven year cycles or some such like cicadas do....in addition to weather effects?

161 What I can’t figure out, didn’t hear a peep (heh) from our wonderful AG state government or senators.

If Cali or another state wants to require Feng Shui and Yoga classes for their poultry, they can do that, but they can’t require other states to do the same in order to sell their eggs in the their state, if that makes sense. It’s a prior restraint of trade.

It’s the same reason (surprise!) countries can sell inexpensive items in this country and kick our ass. In that situation - no OSHA, no Worker’s Comp, no Sociial Security, no child labor laws, no EPA regulations, no business taxes, no ADA regs on the building, etc etc etc.

I always thought any foreign goods into this country should have a price differential or tariff if you will to reflect those stark differences in business conditions. “Free” trade sure, and my asshole is an air freshener. No way any business can compete, not even a little bit.

Our government could have been using their leverage to improve worker lives around the world. Just like they did here. And then chuckleheads would intone that allowing essentially slave labor goods into the country “keeps inflation low”. Inflation is a monetary phenom

Posted by: Common Tater at January 28, 2025 07:45 AM (HhTfM)

162 It certainly means less expensive goods on the shelf, but that has nothing at all to do with inflation, but it does allow the monetary quacks to point to graphs and charts and clap each other on the back about what a great job they are doing in the puzzle palace.
