This scene is like a modern movie: dark and claustrophobic.
This Dutch painter was a contemporary of Henry VII and VIII. I can imagine the smell of closed-up rooms in the winter, steamy rooms in summer, and the heavy clothing on people who didn't bathe as often as we do. Having them so close to you would make it hard to concentrate on the chess game. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at February 07, 2025 09:39 AM (J2vNu) 29

--- You discount the smoke. Not just from tobacco but also the heating and cooking fires. I honestly don't think people stunk as bad as we imagine. Just ... more like wild animals or dogs. I often don't care for this period of painting because the faces are rather wooden. Then I looked closer. Each person's eyes are distinctive and expressive and there is more variety in their expressions. I also like the crowded tavern feel of the scene. You can almost hear the background noise of the voices in the crowded room. (A tavern?) The more I looked, the more interesting the painting became.
If you get a chance, check out van Leyden's etchings. Wonderfully detailed and even more expressive than his paintings. Maybe they are all passing time until the Superbowl broadcast begins. Posted by: JTB at February 07, 2025 09:51 AM (yTvNw) 87

But this time may be different. I've read that there are literally hundreds of whistleblowers who are outing the moles in every branch of government. That helps a lot.
--- The initial hysteria over Project 2025 was that they were collecting names of those folks. Not just that had outed themselves before but also from whistleblowers and informants inside the Biden Admin. Which they were cross-checking with donation and social media history. That was the first time I saw an article attacking P25. They quickly dropped that as it was obviously selling folks on Trump. Posted by: People's Hippo Voice at February 07, 2025 09:59 AM (cFx13) 131

There are no less than *ten* people in this painting! It doesn't seem like that many at first glance, as the standing woman, the girl player, the guy in the center, and the squareheaded player take up your attention. But the others around the periphery become noticeable after a while.

The Jesuit Refugee Service is being, well, Jesuit:
On Friday, January 24, the Trump Administration ordered a freeze on all foreign assistance. This freeze also meant a total work stop, where funding to ensure even basic operational expenses, overhead, and staffing could not be paid. --- JRS currently supports life-saving work among refugee and displaced person populations in nine countries across the globe with funding from the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau for Population, Refugees, and Migration (DOS-PRM). They are some of the world’s most vulnerable and marginalised people. JRS’ PRM-funded global projects for fiscal year 2025 total over $18 million dollars in assistance for critical, life-sustaining services in Chad, Colombia, Ethiopia, India, Iraq, South Africa, South Sudan, Thailand, and Uganda. Curiously, they don't mention the role of JRS in bringing "refugees" into the United States and Ireland. I wonder why. Posted by: The ARC of History! at February 07, 2025 10:01 AM (OhqqI) 146

"You can't fault Ford for trying, but it seems that its decision to kick off its electric vehicle plans with the likes of the F-150 Lightning is taking its financial toll on the Dearborn-based automaker. On Wednesday, Ford CEO Jim Farley took to the proverbial stage during the company's fourth-quarter earnings call to say in no uncertain terms that the current stage of EV manufacturing wasn't sustainable." You can't fault them for trying? Ford lights $5 billion on fire and they can't be faulted? And Farley is getting ink for saying the market isn't there for electric pickups and SUVs. Wow, very helpful Mr. CEO. Aren't the shareholders paying you to suss out where the the market is going? We don't need help seeing where the market is. There’s that old saying nobody got fired for hiring IBM. It’s still true today. But instead of IBM it’s McKinsey or Bain or any of the other big name consulting companies.
Nobody believes they provide any real value. But executives can blame them when shit goes wrong. Hey man, I was only doing what the “experts” advised me to do. Speaking of dinner parties:
Went to a dinner party tonight attended by mostly Gen Zers - Enlightening for all the WRONG reasons...all solid Dems with strong educations and good careers. I was astounded to hear one after the other fresh face espouse some variation of "Well, we grew up with Trump. So, we know what to expect and aren't worried about him." Another recurring theme was "Everything's already so fucked up that we may as well shake things up even more." When asked whether Gaza was a deciding factor in their voting decision, both men and women said "Not at all. The economy mattered far more." The opinion of these mid to late 20 year olds was that Gaza only mattered to kids still in college. The economy was also deemed more important than either womens' rights or LGBTQ rights. When the question of who leads the Democratic Party went around, nobody could agree. When AOC was offered as a future Presidential candidate, the suggestion was met with laughter. "Why do you think Pelosi and AOC dislike each other so much? It's because they're so similar. Two women who, in their own districts are unbeatable, but who would be wiped out if they ever tried to run for President. I don't think we have quite the same stratification of priorities or views on the right, by age?
Posted by: Intercepted DU Transmissions I would say that there is a similar stratification based on age, not wholly in existence here at AOS anymore, but in broader terms. The fight between the waning establishment wing and the rising populist wing carried on here from the latter GWB term into today. Bush Republicans have basically been run out of AOS and they trend to older voters pining for Reagan and (somewhat the Bushes). It was Gen X where Trump crushed it; Boomers and the few Silents still around were split about evenly. I think part of that is a longing for the seemingly ordered politics of days past which simply do not apply to the reality of today's issues. Posted by: whig at February 07, 2025 10:37 AM (ctrM5) 289

Posted by: Huck Follywood ===== I think starting the the Baby Boomers in the Dem party, they saw politics in Manichean religious terms because of Vietnam and desegregation. I would guess that the DU universe, for example, are mostly over 60, resemble the MSNBC and CNN demographics, and are skewed to government and non profit employment or the less productive departments of corporations like HR. They are of the left, not liberals as the waning Silents and Greatest generation were. For the New Dealers, politics was transactional more than religious---tax and tax, spend and spend, elect and elect (a mangled quote by James Farley--FDR's patronage chief). So the Boomers split in half with half becoming leftists viewing politics as a struggle between right and wrong, and the right which remained in the older transactional politics mode. That is my read on it anyway. Posted by: whig at February 07, 2025 10:45 AM (ctrM5) 316

Wasn’t that more of a self-deprecating joke about the Democrats being disorganized? Seems like it would apply today.
Posted by: Disinterested FDA Director Starting about 1980 or so, the parties became more homogeneous. Southern Democrats disappeared and the remaining residual agrarian types disappeared. That left urban machines run the rump Democrat party and we saw the Democrats become more and more united in ideology. The GOP, however, dithered between the GOPe wing and the conservative wing which ironically was the Democrat's prior problems. You can see this on national maps of politics by county maps or even congressional district maps. So the last several Dems nominated for President reflect those urban machines rather than a more open process. Meanwhile the old GOP procession of nominating past losers (but vetted) of elections past imploded. Nixon lost in 60, became nominated in 68, Reagan lost in 76, became nominee in 1980. GHWB lost in 80, became VP and won in 1988, Bob Dole lost in 1988 and was nominee in 1996. Dems did not use that system. Posted by: whig at February 07, 2025 10:52 AM (ctrM5) 343

To be fair, we've never really had an ideological audit of the money trough's with the express purpose reducing the size, scope and reach of the federal leviathan with a imprimatur to make things run more efficiently. Posted by: I used to have a different nic The older transactional nature of politics, and nostrums like politics do not extend past the water's edge, we are all in this together, and other such universalisms were appealing to people of that era. The US, for example, was largely homogeneous in population (about 90 percent white, and 10 percent black with a smattering of Hispanics (often calling themselves white). And to be honest, winning WWII, the dominance of American culture and economy, the Moonshot, the myth about FDR's New Dealers ending the Depression, and other such heroic mythos are potent political stuff. The LBJ era reflected that issue but then began to pivot to the much worse era of today where the Left began viewing everything in light of right and wrong and the Right kept cruising on with transactional politics--tinkering about the edges of government spending and instead focusing on keeping the Commies abroad at bay (while ignoring those in the US).
