The scene in Master and Commander where Warley is lost illustrates why. In many situations, the ship couldn't simply stop and wait for a sailor overboard. Sailors decided that they'd rather drown quickly in that case.

I assume the recruiting pitch you listed is for option1.

The "why" is because she endorsed Kamala and spoke out against Trump. In the past, celebrities were afraid to support Republicans, because it would hurt their careers, but could be as Left wing as possible and still be protected. In the Era of Trump, conservatives are finally pushing back. Swift couldn't stay neutral, but instead publicly picked a side...and now she's going to get hate from the right. It's not ideal, but if it's how the game has to be played, I'm glad we're finally fighting back.

The younger brat likes her, and has seen her in concert a few times. I have discussed it with her and understand it, though I do not find the music in the least bit entertaining or memorable.

One thing that people of a certain age might not appreciate is that Taylor Swift is a fine businesswoman, and has done very well for herself. I despise the injection of politics into her music, and will never pay her a dime, but we do have to be cognizant of the reality...many people like her because she has stuck it to the typical music industry business model.

201 Though I was of the right age, I managed by sheer luck to avoid the Little Party in Southeast Asia (1950s-1975). In high school I told myself that if it looked like I might be drafted, I'd go for the Navy and try to get into submarines (if I couldn't wangle shore duty somewhere).

I told myself duty on modern atomic subs would be like starship duty-- a self-contained vessel, and if the hull got breached you were dead. And as I understood it, you got extra pay for being in subs.

Fortunately I had a high draft number and didn't have to risk being entombed in a ship at the bottom of the Atlantic.

My oldest daughter liked her music but has since been very hostile to her. She has made the entirely reasonable point that Swift complains about poverty, women in music, and all that shit, but could donate all of her money to fix it, so why wouldn't she...?

She also made another argument that when Swift receives a Grammy she makes a speech that's a commercial for her next project.

I think my daughter has been cured. Oddly enough she came to these opinions while in college.

221 A performer in Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime show was detained on the field and could face charges after unfurling a combination Sudanese-Palestinian flag with “Sudan” and “Gaza” written on it.

The NFL confirmed the person was part of the 400-member field cast. The New Orleans Police Department said in a statement that “law enforcement is working to determine applicable charges in this incident.”
Image: https://tinyurl.com/bdcmwm8n

The NOPD is working to determine the applicable charges? Here's the charge: "Forgetting that the US is a white Judeo-Christian country and everybody else in the world doesn't matter."

Detain him first THEN try to find charges? Classic NOPD. Coming up with charges against this man of color was a problem the antebellum Slave Patrol didn't have.

There is nothing illegal about unfurling a flag. Not liking the flag or what it represents is no basis to even detain him

as Russia does, during the course of the "investigation" they will "find" something. They'll announce that this person has committed some other (fabricated) crime. He hasn't paid his taxes, downloaded child porn, or sells or buys drugs, etc.

I haven't declined that far!

Yes, I liked Taylor 's first few singles in '07 and '09, "Our Song" and "You Belong With Me." Though they were not country they had good lyrics and decent tunes, and the second had a well-executed video, if I recall right. Plus she was, and is, gorgeous. But I gather that most of her work since then has been about bemoaning her own poor choices in boyfriends. That resonates with her female fan base, which is fine.

Rap continuously flatters itself over its supposed iconoclasm and rebellion when really it's a cynical corporate Big Mac-level mainstream product and about as rebellious as The Bachelor: Season 28. I have nothing at all against writers using obscenities, but when the obscenities alone are supposed to be proof of your originality and bleeding-edgelord status, your work sucks.

314 268 If she re-recorded her old catalog, won't she have to pay royalties to the company which bought it?

It's my understanding that her dad screwed her out of her original catalog as she was a minor at the time. I believe she got it back and that's why she was able to do her Eras tour and not lose most of the take paying royalties.

Posted by: Sponge - F*ck Cancer at February 10, 2025 10:30 AM (Zz0t1)

There's also the songwriter vs performer thing. If I record a Swift-written song, I will have to pay her royalties on the songwriting credit, but I will own the performance. If someone then markets the recording of my performance, both Swift and I would get paid.

So, by rerecording all her old stuff, whoever acquired the old performance rights would be SOL. Of course, whoever owns the songwriting credit will still get paid.

350 I really hope Trump planned for dealing with activist judges who would try to stop what he was doing by having appeals court judges at the ready to quickly overturn the nonsense.

I would be astonished if he didn't. Everyone knew it would come down to activist judges throwing hissy fits and imposing their policy preferences.

Girl: he's a rapper
Me: k
Girl he calls out Drake as a pedo.
Me: who?
Girl: he's another rapper.
Me: k
Girl have you even heard rap music? Ever heard of any rapper?
Maybe Eminem?
Me: check the CD shelf. Eminem and Will Smith are up there somewhere. And everyone knows Snoop Dog. Rap hit the mainstream in the 1980's. I still like Gangsters Paradise.
Girl:.......... What's gangsters paradise?

I’m sure I’ve been exposed to other Taylor Swift songs, playing in public or something, but I wouldn’t recognize them as such. Most modern music is forgettable and, blessedly, easy to tune out.
