Baburen was one of the earliest artists to belong to the group of Dutch-speaking artists active in Rome in the seventeenth-century known as the "Bentvueghels" ("Birds of a Feather"); his nickname was "Biervlieg" ("Beer Fly", or one who drinks a lot). "Sebastian had prudently concealed his faith, but in 286 it was detected. Diocletian reproached him for his supposed betrayal, and he commanded him to be led to a field and there to be bound to a stake so that the chosen archers from Mauretania would shoot arrows at him. "And the archers shot at him till he was as full of arrows as an urchin is full of pricks, and thus left him there for dead." Miraculously, the arrows did not kill him. The widow of Castulus, Irene of Rome, went to retrieve his body to bury it, and discovered he was still alive. She brought him back to her house and nursed him back to health." The painting depicts the moment when Saint Irene, a charitable widow, attended the Roman centurion after he had been shot at, extracting the arrow in his side. On the right and also emerging from the darkness is her elderly maid who firmly supports the saint. The lower right area of the canvas is occupied by a mound of Sebastian’s armour.

The artist does a wonderful job with the facial expressions, each separate and appropriate for the scene, and their postures. I like the way he captures the folds and flow of the clothing and other details such as the arrows and the discarded armor. Then the bright colors and skin tones against a plain and often dark background. The technique makes the figures almost pop off the canvas. Very effective and strengthens the impact of the image.

I once went to an art museum which had a picture of St. Sebastian. The depiction had more arrows. The curator needed to inform me that Sebastian is in some circles a "gay icon" because he had a look of ecstasy on his face while getting shot with arrows. Arrows/Ecstasy. Get it? 😕 It was not an art display of homo erotic art. I rolled my eyes and complained in a loud whisper to Fen Spouse so as not to disturb the other patrons.

I think most people here are too aware of the vagaries of the American Way of Justice to need the dangers of the DP expounded again. But when a crime results not just in the death of individuals, but the death of freedom and democracy -- or even places it at severe risk -- I think the DP is not just appropriate, but dictated by practical common sense. Anyone who tries to overthrow the gov't against the will of a majority of the people, and fails, is only going to try again if they have the opportunity to do so. Imprisonment is not certain enough. When Musk is brought to trial, I will consider it a miscarriage of justice if he is not executed. The same for Turnip." Posted by: Duncanthrax at February 04, 2025 10:21 AM (a3Q+t) 180

Jack the Ripper's murder spree claimed the lives of countless women A researcher has claimed to have definitively identified Jack the Ripper through DNA evidence, sparking calls for an official inquest into the infamous murders. One of the free ones like Tubi. Ad supported, but lots of content.
Outside of that, probably Criterion because it's a curated list of interesting films. Mubi for those more interested in expanding in weird directions. Shudder for horror fans. AppleTV+ is just too limited in terms of their content. They're spending big, but the selection is still kind of small. Get a free trial (I think there's still a 3 month offer showing on my Roku homescreen now). I questioned her on how she views the threat posed by Russia, the importance of aligning intelligence priorities with President Trump’s national security goals, and the necessity of making certain intelligence provided to policymakers is free of bias. we are on the hook for paying that off.
I've argued for a while the right should start looking at the tax code as a way to punish America's enemies. A good specific goal then would be a series of punitive taxes aimed at blue states and leftwing individuals for the nominal goal of paying down the debt. And honestly, its justified. Frankly I think we as a society suffer from entertainment overload. There simply is not enough good creative talent out there to fill the production demand (note not consumer demand) to keep the studios running. IOW there is a lot more goods being produced than the consumer demands. Ironically I spend more time looking through what's available than actually watching the "entertainment".
