American actor Joseph Jefferson (1829–1905) was best known for his portrayal of Rip Van Winkle on stages in Australia, Europe, and the United States. After forty years of playing the role, one critic noted at his death, "He was Rip, and Rip was he." Sargent, however, chooses to depict Jefferson in another celebrated but much lesser known role, the elderly pedant Dr. Pangloss in the comedic play The Heir at Law.
Other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play? Posted by: rhennigantx at February 05, 2025 09:43 AM (gbOdA) 39

I never think of Sargent showing a sense of humor but this one does. I assume that Sargent was already known for his style doing flattering portraits so using that style for this parody would have really caught peoples' attention. The staring eyes and receding hairline almost jump off the canvas. I wonder what the public reaction, if any, was. In any event, someone was having fun.

They've reportedly spent $30 million on the Oscar campaign. It'll probably win some of the awards it's nominated for (one of the two original songs, or something, and probably Zoe Saldana for Supporting Actress), but Netflix is going to be shut out...again...in Best Picture. A little too exciting morning. We were trying to put show entries in for little Fitz but the superintendent's site didn't recognize his AKC registration number. Called the AKC. Found out that while his litter had been registered and paid for by his co-breeders, Fitz individually had not been registered. We took care of it posthaste and got his entry in. Two things about this. Had the show used another superintendent, one where all Fitz's registration information get entered manually, he might have been shown, won a ribbon and had the award disallowed later. The other is that Her Majesty is an AKC Breeder of Merit, part of which qualifications is that every puppy in every litter is registered with the AKC. Since she (and I) are listed as co-breeders on this litter, it would be a blot on her copybook. Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at February 05, 2025 10:07 AM (dxSpM) 144

Jen Rubin nails it! @jenrubin.bsky.social Musk is running the government. Trump is a feeble figurehead.
Trump told RFKjr and Musk to "go have fun." It is Trump's way of getting revenge on the American people and being cruel. Trump gets off on it. He's a sadist, just like his German idol. We can see his sadism when he carefully plans his rapes for maximum humiliation of his victim, and also to make them feel helpless. He comes across as a nice charming famous guy, women assume he would not rape them in a public place like he did with EJ Carroll. Trump plans it in advance, cooks up a story to manipulate her into a secluded location, and tricks her into a vulnerable situation. Stormy Daniels reports the same experience, she was told a false story to get her into Trump's hotel room, and then trapped in his bedroom with guards outside the door. She is a very smart and wise in the ways of the world and was blindsided by Trump. Then of course they feel helpless, no one will believe their stories, or that someone like Trump has to rape women for sex. 😃 Wouldn't hang but an interesting art & history lesson.
AI Overview Joseph Jefferson (1829-1905) played the role of Dr. Pangloss in the comedic play The Heir at Law. The American actor was best known for his portrayal of Rip Van Winkle. John Singer Sargent painted a portrait of Jefferson as Dr. Pangloss. The portrait captures the character's eccentricity with his wild hair and manic gaze. A wood engraving of Jefferson as Dr. Pangloss was published in Harper's Weekly in 1891. The engraving depicts Jefferson with white bushy hair, holding a bundle on a stick in his right hand. A theater critic described Jefferson's performance as "full of nervous vitality and mental sparkle" Thanks. Posted by: L - No nic, another day at February 05, 2025 10:17 AM (NFX2v) 186

207 >>We are 15 days into his presidency. It's really hard to say how America is doing in the aggregate right now.
——— Given what Trump’s team have revealed about USAID alone, one could argue that our awareness of our circumstances has improved enormously, and that this isn’t 2016 Trump at all. Posted by: electronic means at February 05, 2025 10:22 AM (wFFVS) ===== True. Awareness of dirty dealing is up. How that affects regular Americans at this point is unclear, though. I can assume that the spending on things like USAID and whatever else other regulatory agencies are splurging on will lower overall deficit spending which could positively affect things like consumer prices and the overall money supply while also lessening regulatory burden across the economic sector and improving the ability of our economic engine to run. However, that's an assumption of future events. That's not a measurable thing that has happened. Right now, the center of events is agencies in DC and their ability to spend without oversight (even from the chief executive). What goes on after that is assumption. However, the assertion from DU was: America is doing terribly now. What measure is there to say one way or the other how things are going? 294 Here’s something to consider in response to the retort “USAID is less than one percent of the budget.”
Money spent can have vastly different effects, even if the money is small. Spend one million on a house, you have a nice place to live. To celebrate, spend one hundred on fentanyl, get addicted and die of an overdose. The mayhem and chaos USAID funds and foments doesn’t require hundreds of billions, although the damage it causes may cost billions to mend. Posted by: electronic means at February 05, 2025 10:33 AM (wFFVS) ======= The $40 billion of USAID makes it the 88th largest nation on earth by GDP. Hollywood's total revenue was $93 billion last year. Across everything it does. The total box office in 2023 was $9 billion. No, USAID was shut down. The 'news' site that launched the Hunter Biden laptop lie was being funded by USAID. Taxpayers paid for democrat propaganda that defrauded a US election. "There can't be any crying about Gaza now if you weren't fully on board with Joe and Kamala... At the time, the choice (and the ramifications) were clear. Joe's behind the scenes negotiations eventually led to a peace deal. Kamala would have kept the peace. Trump has always made clear his intentions of doing away with any two state solution. Oh hell, there are thousands of NGOs in Philadelphia.
In fact, here's my county: Delaware County, Pennsylvania has over 4,500 nonprofits. Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are a type of nonprofit that have a broader scope of work and international influence. Keep saying, all politics is local. Watch PA. Watch your state. > "The artist just phoned in the fingers of the right hand"
No, that was a very deliberate artistic decision. If Sargant had painting it with the same level of detail as the other hand it would have competed with the viewer's attention. It's also posed at the same level and very close to the other hand, which also presented a compositional problem. By just roughing in the right hand and painting the left one with more detail, Sargent focuses our attention exactly where he wants it: on that eccentric gesture of the left hand.
