Not tired of winning. Trump, his agenda, and people off to a helluva start.

Border Czar Tom Homan warned that daily deportation numbers are set to rise in the coming weeks as President Trump's administration begins to expand its operations.

Put on your thinking caps and adjust your TV antenna for better reception.

Who recalls when television signed off for the evening?

The most famous television test pattern or test card, the RCA Indian-head.

Test Pattern Main.jpg

Those a bit younger will recall the SMPTE version.

SMPTE.JPG

The logic behind the layout.

The chart was designed to both check transmitter performance from the studio to the antenna and allow the audience to determine the degree of performance of their individual receivers. In addition to the advantage of being a static signpost, of sorts, the chart revealed geometrical defects, horizontal and vertical degrees of picture resolution, and a range of shading gradations.

Remember When Television Ended at Midnight?

In the early 1960s, stations started to get creative with their playing of the Star Spangled Banner, many choosing to show various images of American life with the music playing in the background. Through the 1970's and 1980's, studios experimented with many different forms and formats, but no matter what, this was the sign that kids used to know it was *really* time to go to bed!

A local station played this Blue Angels video every night - prior to playing the Star Spangled Banner and signing off.

And those trying to get Cinemax (which never went off air) did not get a test card but did get something that resembled this.

Principal Axis Theorem. Rotating bodies can do some very non-intuitive things. Here's a video demonstrating this effect: Publius.

The "Principal Axis Theorem" is about the moments of inertia of a general 3D body. This is probably getting into mathematical details too much for a post (the no-math rule), but the result of that is for any 3D body, no matter how odd shaped and lacking symmetry, you can find 3 orthogonal axes for which the moments of inertia tensor/matrix take a simple diagonal form. These are the three principal moments of inertia, the "I's", I1, I2, I3. They can be equal, or different. In the general case, you arrange it where say,
I1 > I2 > I3. Publius.

This is sometimes called the Tennis Racket Theorem, or the Dzhanibekov effect, the latter after a Russian cosmonaut who noticed it spinning wing nuts off studs in orbit. It scared him, thinking "could the earth do that?" There was this bit that the Russians were "afraid" to talk about the tumbling wing nut incident because they were worried the earth could do something like that. I don't think they ever were really, as this behavior was known. The earth does wobble a bit, due to external gravitational torques, and internal mass redistributions, but we can be assured it's stable overall and no flipping around. The proper name for this is the Intermediate Axis Theorem.
Here is a nice explanatory video: Publius.

For a sphere, they're all equal, and any axis is a principal axis. A sphere has perfect 3D symmetry. On the other hand, an odd shaped object will have perhaps no symmetry at all, and in that case, it will have 3 different moments, about some particular set of axes. The Intermediate Axis Theorem states that rotation about the largest or the smallest axes (I1 and I3) is stable, but rotation about the middle one, I2 is unstable. Things will tumble. That's the Tennis Racket effect. If two moments of inertia are equal, say we have I1 > I2 = I3, or I1 = I2 > I3, we have no intermediate axis. A cylinder or disk has this property. -Publius

The later test pattern was also useful.

Kids these days have no idea of the effort that went into getting a clear TV signal. One did not just "change the channel," there are adjustements to the bunny ears, and fine-tuning the set to get the best possible look, which was influence by atmospheric conditions as well.

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
of sun-split clouds,—and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of—wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air ....

Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew—
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

76 One did not just "change the channel," there are adjustements to the bunny ears, and fine-tuning the set to get the best possible look, which was influence by atmospheric conditions as well.

We had an antenna on the roof, with a control on the TV for rotating it to get the various stations. We lived in the middle of the valley of nowhere—all the stations were pretty far away. Point it just right with the lake conditions just right and I could get the Milwaukee station that ran nonstop horror movies on Saturdays.

My recollection is that my dad had to go out on the roof at least twice a year to fix the rotator. That could have been related.

Do people still use those things? Technically they’d still be useful today, especially given how finicky HDTV is.

Zero in

Merriam-Webster:

This use of hone in dates to around 1965, which makes it only about 10 years newer than the figurative use of home in. We have enough evidence of "hone in" in use that we enter it in our dictionaries. [...] "Home in" remains significantly more common, and is the version to use if you want to avoid criticism. "Zero in" is also an option if you want to avoid the very similar h-words altogether.

The precession of a spinning top is due to the torque of gravity. The top is trying to fall over, but since it's spinning, you get the "crazy cross-product" sideways forces. The angular momentum of a precessing top is changing due to that torque. The magnitude doesn't change, but the direction does.

The slow (~24,000 yr) precession of the earth's spin axis (precession of the equinoxes) is due to the various gravitational torques the Moon and the Sun exert on the earth.

The earth is a precessing top.

Oh honey, you barely scratched the surface with that comment. The head of AID in a middle east country (who was having an affair with her driver and authorized his salary to be double the official rate) berated the security officer because one of her officers got shot and killed by terrorists. She had sent a memo to her staff to ignore security requirements for said country because they "were doing good things there." She had also skimmed the AID payouts for decades, which came out in the investigation of the security officer. Discovery is a b*tch sometimes. And that is just one example.

Another interesting thing you can do. Rig something with some high angular momentum. Like a metal pulley spinning fast on it's axis. Now, try to change the direction of the spin axis.

You'll feel those crazy sideways forces you have to exert trying to do that. Right angle side-grinders can show this effect as you try to change directions.

Now, stand on a turntable and try to change direction. You'll get yourself to spinning to just counter the change in angular momentum you do to the spinning pulley.

Not really. The galactic gravitation field is, relative to the size of the solar system, pretty uniform. The galactic tide is effectively zero, and everything is free-falling around the galaxy at the same rate.

Thus, it's the same as if the whole solar system were alone in inertial space.

NBC and CBS were the earliest networks, grabbing up all the channels 2 through 6. There's a big bandwidth gap between 6 and 7, and when ABC came along, they had to settle for 7 and up channels. Those channels required more power to reach the same distance.

Growing up in Smallville, we received Ttown's NBC-2 and CBS-6 well, but ABC-8 was often fuzzy, not just because of their channel-power, but also because their tower was on the far side of Ttown from us. PBS-11 was iffy, but who cared. UHF was just a useless dial, on the later TV models.

You have not dreamed of—wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air ....

Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew—
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

Posted by: Sebastian Melmoth at January 27, 2025 10:05 PM (IOGah)

They should. Flywheels are basically large gyroscopes and they are used as reaction wheels in many satellites to control yaw, pitch, and roll without using any fuel. The old Kepler telescope lost several of it's primary and backup reaction wheels and the control team had to get creative with the remaining wheels to keep control of the satellite. It did limit the missions it could perform, though.

There's another principle that comes in when a spinning object has some internal means of dissipating energy (if the object is plastic and can deform, friction will do it -- spinning liquids are another example).

Such an object will eventually settle into a spin about the axis with the highest principal moment of inertia. This minimizes the kinetic energy to angular momentum ratio.

Take a cylinder. The long axis has the least momentum of inertia. The symmetry is such that the other two axes are equal and larger.

A flexible cylinder spinning about the long axis will eventually tumble around and get to spinning cross-ways.

Indeed, I did get a call from a "listener" who was picking up my show on her TV. I advised her on how to adjust the tuning on the TV (that outer ring on the channel changer dial, as it was back then).

She said she didn't care about that. She just objected to the "obscene" music I'd been playing. Don't remember what it was, just regular rock of the day.

Yes, those momentum wheels are very clever and interesting. Imagine due to some external forces that cause torque, you get to spinning. You counter that by spinning up internal wheels. With three of them perpendicular, you can control attitude.

However, there's a problem of "saturation". There are limits on the RPM you can spin the wheels, and sometimes they hit that limit. There's some tricks they can do (that involve making use of external forces, maybe thrusters) to bleed that off.

This is one of the reasons why ideas about producing artificial gravity by spinning a spacecraft are frought with peril. You get to shifting internal mass around and changing the principal moments of inertia, you can easily get the thing tumbling out of control.

Maintaining stability is not trivial.

Per director of water and energy policy for the California Policy Center, the flow of water to the Sacramento River is not so much for the smelt, but because the basin has trouble getting Nitrogen out of the cleared sewer effluent they dump into the waters. By dumping water into the delta they dilute the effluent to a level where it rarely causes algal blooms and eutrophication. Which the authorities blame on global warming.

Dumping water that could be used for urban water and ag is considered by the state to be a better deal than building the infrastructure to handle and reduce the Nitrogen in the sewage effluent.

362 This is unprecedented. Always, a political party has had a voice. Always. There is always a leader to run opposition should it be necessary. To take the lead on an issue when needed.

But, never has an entire political party been in such a disarray as the Democrats now find themselves. They have no leader at present. They have no voice. And, to compound that reality, the progressives of the party don't know what to do, because they are used to their NPC classification, and no one is telling them what to do. Talk about the perfect storm. The one individual who might have held the status is Newsom, and he is damaged goods.

Later models had a degaussing coil built right into the CRT frame. It would activate for a few seconds every time you turned on the set.

I remember when the color sets were so sensitive to magnetic fields that if you wanted to move one to a different room, or even a different wall in the same room, you'd sometimes have to have a repairman come out and realign the set.

The old tubes were pretty damn stout. I have my fathers fender tremolux guitar amp he bought in 1958. It still has the original RCA 6V6 black plates with the 1958 date. I had to change every electrolytic cap in it a few years back after he pulled it out of mothballs, because they dry out from non use, but the tubes were solid. Tubes today? Yeah, mixed bag. 392 SE Utah Publius.

I can’t remember when I saw it exactly. Colder than heck. Maybe around midnight a couple days ago.

A few degrees maybe 5 or 10 north of due east. About a handwidth high in the sky. It sort of reminded me, if I had optics, that I thought it would look that spinning multicolored square on an original star trek episode. It sort of pulses and ebbs in the atmosphere, and changes color. Utah is good for stargazing. On a mesa top at 6300, cold as a Mfer, so celestial observation is fun, but it ain’t that fun!

Thousands of prostitutes are being flown to Davos charging up to minimum of $2500 a night for many of the women and men selling theirselves to the elite.

Last year it was reported that 3000 prositutes were flown in. It is worth noting that flying this many people in for sex acts alone is considered sexual trafficking by definition, which leads you to wonder why it’s held in Switzerland where prostitution is legal

It has been something to behold. Prior to 2016 Mr. Trump was a member in good standing with everyone on the left. First they laughed at him. “Do it!!” and then they completely lost their shit. That was 10 years ago.

The more I read about “Malicious Compliance” it is obvious they use it for everything. Those poor bastards in LA fires, for just one example. As someone mentioned, people who get shit done are always fighting with people in the way who can’t do shit

Yeah there are a few different brands of russian output tubes I experimented with in the guitar amps. Sovtek, Svetlana, EH, Tungsol reissues to name a few. Svetlana was a great tube, but then they changed manufacturers and they weren't as good. They died fast. I have the good ones, what the call the winged C Svetlana in most of the old marshall amps, the others have Electro harmonix (EH). My newer modern amps have a bunch of different stuff, like the Czech made JJ tubes. Chinese tubes are right out. The problem is the tone, you really feel the tubes in the guitar amps. Some keep the amp nice and tight, some are too flubby. Preamp tubes are whole different aggravation. You want the gain, and the good ones are microphonic, the quiet ones sound like shit.

Oh man, Miley just showed me some post she saw on X. It's a "burner account" from some OPM "insider" who is freaking out. He/she/ze is screaming that Trump's "henchmen" have taken over the OPM office in just 5 days. They've pushed out all the "non-political" "civil servants" (read that as Resistance/malicious compliance types) and installed Trump henchman.

I love it. Trump 2.0 is a thing of beauty. He's got people in place in who know how to get things done. He and his people have had 4 years to think about how they would get things done.

Looks like they're executing this beautifully. They've move in fast, knowing just what to do, to throw the Resistance into disarray. They don't know what hit them. They've never seen anything move this fast.

471 Thanks for your lovely comments and support, everyone!

Hubby & I have been facing this for a few years now. His Dr's told him to "get affairs in order" and life expectancy was "very short" THEN.

We've had our miracle, IMO. Got 4 years beyond what was expected... just a matter of time anyway and we're grateful to have had the extra.

Have had all those important (end-of-life) conversations already... It's the anticipatory grief that eroded happiness during the 'good times' we were able to experience since then.

It's been a tough slog sometimes.

This site has been a Godsend for me, and hubby enjoyed the Saturday Night Jokes and Pet Threads especially. I'd read the highlights to him and we'd laugh so heartily!

He's safe in a care facility now-- I can sleep with both eyes closed, not worrying where he'll wander at night.

This is so hard anyway!

476 I love it.

I'm living proof that they never really leave us. My mom had struck 3 times from the grave, in big unmistakeable ways. Her last one was a warning, that if I didn't get to the doctor fast last year would be my last christmas. I listened, and just missed a fatal heart attack, and because I listened I got fixed before anything bad happened, and it was really really close. I didn't have days. Another one wasn't medical. My mom was an arts and crafts master. She made a pair of nice reindeer, about 2 ft tall for christmas decorations. She bought some flat plastic eyes to finish it off. One of the eyes vanished years ago, so we only used one of the pair during the holidays. After I moved to the new house we started decorating. I had the one reindeer and put it on one side of the fireplace. I thought it was a shame the second one was missing the eye and wouldn't be put out in the new house. A few days later I went down the workbench and sitting on the floor after going missing for years, and after 9 months of the move from hell the eye was sitting there. Mom said her piece. "Put them both out".

you have no idea. That reindeer eye was missing for years, probably 10 years. The room I found it in is a separate room on one end of the basement where the woodshop ended up. Nothing related to christmas went in there. It was just my tools that I had packed for the move. Anything christmas was on the opposite end of the basement by the stairs. We're talking 90 feet away. I had partially set up the room, and also I build large shelve units for all my guitar cases. How that eye went missing for years in a different house , went through a major move, and ended up on the floor staring at me right in front of the new bench I made, AND right as we started decorating for christmas was nothing short of a miracle.

Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division at January 28, 2025 03:02 AM (VwHCD)

496 The term "Separation of Church and State" as conservatives here know, is not in the Constitution but was a phrase written by Thomas Jefferson in a letter and referring to not having a state church as in the Anglican Church in England. Didn't some Governors order churches to shut down during Covid? How is that not a violation of the concept separation of church and state? Quakers are amongst the most progressive faith group politically, but how do they have any way of vetting who they've allowed to use their building and how do they know Juan is not a murderer, rapist or member of a violent drug cartel. It would seem to me that they've purring their members and attenders at risk.

I also have some of the christmas tree ornaments my parents had when they got married in 1958, so from before I was born. They are on the tree too mingled in with 30 years of hallmark star trek ornaments, lol. I also have their original tree topper. I don't have kids either. So yeah, I know. My brother never had kids either. I often wonder just what the hell I'm going to do. The music stuff is a major concern of mine. There is a shit ton of it. I mean a major shit ton. I still use it, its part of me, but at what point do I start thinning the herd. I mean I could play a different guitar every day for 3 months and never play the same guitar twice. I still have the huge ass amp wall that us retard metalheads used back in the day. I don't use it anymore, because I switched to more modern amps and you don't use them like wallpaper like we used to. If anything happened to me Mrs b would be soooo screwed having to deal with it. I have a good friend who owns a music store, and knows everything I have, so I do have a safety valve. But yeah, I know the deal.

The only thing I can think of is to disconnect and reconnect the battery -- reboot the car's electronics. I did it once about a year ago when the instrument panel went partly dark. It solved the problem neatly.

Other than that, the dealer, I guess. And they'll want $$ for diagnosis and will probably suggest a whole new USB port: more $$$. But the flash drive filled with music is important for me to have on long drives. Funny how we get attached to the new tech, when we did fine without it on cars for decades, huh?
