Good morning, good people, from the Adirondacks, featuring a winter storm warning today for your enjoyment. A tentative 1-3" accumulation with the possibility of more. Then comes the cold, warming to 35 by the weekend. It looks as if, with the Jet Stream pattern continuing, this will be our winter. Any village or township that doesn't have a heavy snow removal budget is going to be in deep shit simply because of the frequent light snows that require plowing/salting as much as a heavy snow will.

@30/Puddleglum: "I have no ad blocker on my phone so I see things, man. Trippy things."
Ouch. This is why, when I'm home, I have my phone connect to my internal network. I've got an ad-blocker up front at the firewall. For that, I use the bind9 name server, and with downloaded copies of a couple of site lists that provide lists of URLs that are known to serve malware, spam, or provide advertising, I run a self-written script that concatenates the lists, removes duplicate entries, and then transforms each URL into a zone lines, each one resolving an address to 127.0.0.1. This list of zones gets saved to /etc/named.blocked.conf and then I use an include statement in the main /etc/named.conf file to import and apply this configuration. Is it a hack? Oh probably, but it's been working well now for 3 decades. I run my script, it builds the new named.blocked.conf file, and then tells bind9 to reload. My plan is to retire this and move to a new firewall device running pfSense, which has its own site-blocking mechanisms that allow the admin to select from an impressively large selection of site lists, and it does all the updating/applying automatically. Wonderful stuff! Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at January 20, 2025 05:07 AM (O7YUW) 40

I am reading a little pamphlet from the early 1900's by someone named Mary Channell Stevens who apparently taught adult Bible studies for Quakers. She has suggestions for Bible readings and had a very winsome style of talking about the Bible, and she clearly loved it . Here's what she says about Psalm 139-" It brings God close to one." So here it is- Psalm 139:

A reminder on Inauguration day not to have misplaced faith:
Psalms 118:9 reminds us: "It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in princes." And Psalms 146:3 also cautions us: "Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help." We are all flawed. So are our leaders. There will still be big disappointments in store over the next four years. None of us is wiser than God, and this is backed up in Isaiah 55:9: "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts." It's the last dawn of Joe Biden's last Dark Winter.
Posted by: Quarter Twenty Poetically stated. Well done. I get the sense that Obama's Marxist insurgency hit it's high water mark with Biden administration. Literally, without the tenacious war Trump waged for 8+ years with them most likely that insurgency would have succeeded. Because of that battle tested experience we now have the most focused and driven commander in chief in my lifetime running the country. Over the next four years President Trump is going to make the Left moan and howl as he dismantles that insurgency. More importantly, the team he has assembled is young and will gain the necessary experience needed to continue this war when President Trump 's term ends. I don't think the Left gets this part of it, that he is effectively creating a multi-generational movement to carry forth his vision, our vision, of what the United States of America should be. These nourish us in hours of weakness and depression." She suggests we read the Bible we mark passages that speak to us and put them in a notebook

We also have Lowes Grocery chain here.
In-store made sausage, as well as a wine bar where on can get a wine/beer/mimosa, and walk around the store and shop while sipping. And when the coupon/sales cycles align, either Yuengling or Michelob Ultra in cases of 24 bottles for as low as $15.77 a case ( Limit of 4). Wegman's is indeed pricey.
But there are some things that if one is careful with coupons and sales, the price gets down into the 'affordable' range. And it's the only place we know of that carries their herb infused basting oil, and Butter Boy butter from France. As I refer to it...a dessert butter, it's that good. I live within range of three Walmarts, a Sam's Club, two Albertsons, and a Sprouts. Shopping for groceries in Las Cruces is not a gourmet experience for the most part. Pro Tip: from my experience Walmart produce ranges between near rotten to less near rotten. I literally will not shop for produce at Walmart - you get tired of slicing open an onion and finding it rotten in the center.

Our local Food Lion is our go-to store for about 75% of our shopping needs. Clean, well organized and we know almost the entire staff. Really great people. Then we have several of the few remaining Piggly-Wiggly's, after the chain pretty much contracted into almost non-existence. Walmart produce is a real hit-or-miss here for quality.
While Lowes, Publix and Harris-Teeter seem to have the consistently highest quality/price, our particular Food Lion stays within the top 85% for quality, and lower price. Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at January 20, 2025 06:17 AM (a1415) 114

That was Winn-Dixie. Here's one of their ads, with Jim Davis from the '70s. Boy does that bring back childhood memories: Wasn't Bi-Lo known as the Beef People, back in the day? Both Bi-Lo and Winn-Dixie merged under the SE Grocers parent company after bankruptcies. It was SE Grocers that killed Bi-LO brand. Winn-Dixie is still in business, but not any more in SC. Closed roads may stay closed until Thursday. Looks like I might have a really short week.
I have coffee, crackers and popcorn, bread, real food to be cooked, chow for the cats, water (both tap and sparkling mineral), and pipe tobacco. The car's battery is only a year old, the coolant is full and the oil (5W-30, good for much lower temps than this) is fresh, and I'm parking the car away from any trees that might drop an icy branch. It'll get shrouded in snow; but I have a squeegee and an ice scraper (a rare thing around here). I guess I'm set. CERN is clearly fucking with the timeline again. Ilhan Omar posted something kind of smart.
Ilhan Omar @IlhanMN People are more upset at performers/artists attending Trump’s inaugural events but not upset at all the politicians who told them he was a “threat to democracy” going to these events are not serious. Performers at least know they are there to perform and get paid, but these politicians who ran their mouth for 4 yrs and are now willing to be there and clap for him, that’s who they should be mad at. They lied to you and your criticism/anger should be rightfully directed at them. Also, no one should ask people who are performers/artists to be loyal to a party because that’s what dictatorships do. In a free country like ours, people should be able to support any party they want without having their livelihood compromised. Posted by: Ian S. at January 20, 2025 07:15 AM (wItF4) 200

We tried to go to Texas Roadhouse last night. The place was as crowded as on a Friday or Saturday, and the waitress told me we'd have a 35-minute wait for a table. Uh, no. We went to a small local Mexican chain restaurant nearby. The food was okay, the restaurant felt cold inside; the best thing (for me, anyway) was our waitress's cleavage. She kept bending over to ask me if I wanted anything else. Entertaining.
