Gun Thread: T-Minus 17 Hours Edition!

TrumpVance2024 scaled.png
MAGA, Bitches!

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Sweet Holy Jumping Atomic Shitballs! Do I need to say it? Do I need to remind you of the glorious event happening in a mere 17 hours? That's right, hombres and hombrettes, PDT once again takes the oath of office tomorrow at noon! Suck on that, liberals!! Feel free to discuss the rebirth of America and it's founding ideals in the comments, particularly as it relates to guns, ammo and our 2nd Amendment as we celebrate this final Gun Thread under the failed regime of The Retard.

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

******

FUNdamentals
OK, so what have you done to incorporate a focus on fundamentals into your range time? Is this something you do as an afterthought (bad), or do you arrive at the range with a specific plan in mind (good)? As you engage targets, are you specifically focused on some element of stance, grip, trigger mechanics and sight alignment, or rather are you simply pointing for the middle and hoping things work out? Let's assume you believe, as you should, that accurate shooting results from the application of proper fundamentals, then why on the planet of the Earth would you be focused on anything else? Or worse, nothing at all? I mean, you have to be thinking about something, right? Why not make it something useful and productive to the task at hand? I swear I am not making this up, but every time I pull the trigger, i am focused on one of these fundamentals.

I have to say I am also somewhat mystified by shooters who will send 50 or 100 rounds at a single paper target during a range session and expect to get any usable feedback as a result. Focus on your fundamentals while you are shooting and study your targets to see if it's working. Take notes. Write on the targets regarding what you were doing (right or wrong) and what you think may be causing you problems. Use inexpensive targets and use a lot of them. My favorite indoor target is a plain sheet of copier paper with a one inch sticky dot in the center. Some people use paper plates, and that's fine too. I usually change targets at each reload, and before I run another target downrange, spend a few moments analyzing the one just used.

Analysis is key and you have to study what you are doing, right or wrong, before trying to implement changes to fix things. Don't just come home toeing the dirt after a lousy range performance in front of the range babes, give yourself the tools to do something about it!

******

Bonus FUNdamental!

Gun safety is a fundamental, too! A successful day at the range includes not inadvertently shooting yourself or someone else.

21 I have a new girl: Shūfēn

https://flic.kr/s/aHBqjBYJLR

and a request for ideas. I still need to pin the FSB on this T65. I very much like rifles to be as close to zeroed for windage as I can get then and I have a method that I use for M16s where I dimple the barrel using a jig and then thread the hole under the swivel for a set screw. This lines it up perfect and holds it steady while I drill.

Unfortunately this rifle has some asian way of drilling the gas hole in the FSB because there is no hole under the swivel. There is a plug on the top like a gas regulator so I figured they can in that way but even cleaning out the hole and stabbing down with increasingly small wires has not found one.

Right now I have the FSB aligned by matching up the flat top of the block with the flat surface under the rear sight. I think this will work but am entertaining ideas on doing it better.

Odor is a major factor in my work. My wife can't stand Hoppe's so I shifted the Break-Free CLP (which I used in Basic). A friend turned me onto Ballistol, and I like it, but it does have a smell, so I use it when the windows are open.

Nice thing about Ballistol, it preserves wood and you can use it to remove those white rings from your wood furniture.

41 Thanks for the Gun Thread, Weasel!

I clean my pistols after every range trip, unless I shot fewer than 50 rounds out of a particular pistol. I like doing it; it gets me more involved with the gun, and I just like them to be clean and properly lubricated.

I completely agree about analyzing shots by looking at the targets afterwards. I try to keep notes, partly about distance and which gun and ammo choices, but also about what I was working on and what worked and I need to keep doing more of. I've been using these 12 x 18 targets with 6 target circles, so I don't constantly have to put up new targets.

Mrs. Splunge got me a system for tracking your shooting called Mantis. You attach a doohickey to your gun, and it tracks where the motions are, somehow. In my case, it showed me that the muzzle would dip a bit as I started to focus on pulling the trigger. It wasn't that I was pushing or anticipating; I was just letting it drop out of divided attention. So I'm trying to learn not to do that, and slowly improving. Now I mostly only do it when I'm tiring out at the end of a range session.

43 ALERT!! Via Democratic Underground, I just learned of a very disturbing trend in society today:

"There is a small but noticeable trend of parents using weapons-inspired - and, more broadly, aggressive - names for their sons," Sophie Kihm, the editor-in-chief at the website Nameberry, told HuffPost. “Many of these names first appeared on the baby name charts in the 2000s, including Wesson, Caliber, Shooter and Trigger."

Weapon-inspired monikers that parents have chosen in recent years also include Blade and Cannon, as well as brand-related names like Remington, Colt, Ruger and Winchester. Arson, Cutter and Dagger are among the other names with a violent edge in recent data from the Social Security Administration.

According to Kihm, "Weapons-inspired names convey masculinity without being traditional male names. They are at once undeniably masculine and extremely modern. We associate weapons with men and masculinity, so these parents might have more conservative values around gender."

Grateful, I hope you feel better. But if you have snap caps for your weapon of choice in hand, your sick time needn't be a complete waste. Load up your snap caps (after clearing your weapon safely, of course), point it in a pre-determined safe direction, and practice your trigger squeeze.

46 Hi weasel! Thank you for the thread

Range report.

Took the baby Colt out and ran 50 rounds through her. Worked like a champ. I do need to figure out the front sight. It is hard for me to see well.

Then ran 50 rounds through the Ronin. Big difference in accuracy. I think it's due to the more visible sights AND I've run about 1500 rounds through the Ronin and only a hundred or so through the Colt.

I did notice that my trigger pull did not change. Straight back, smooth and methodical. One pull per second.

Good day at the range.

I like Kroil as a penetrating oil and rust remover. PB Blaster though has given good service as well; it just seems to take a little longer and a bit more.

FWIW, they now have Kroil with silicone. Have no idea what that is for.

An irritant if you ever rust blue or cold blue spots on a firearm, you will get splotchy results if a silicone lube has been used. Don't care much for etching the metal again with an acid to get the blue to take.

Prior use of one of the lightweight CLP types (that did contain silicone) did produce some spectacular results on an old Krag Sideplate with Oxpho Blue--came out looking like it was case hardened with swirling straw and violet colors. Accidental but pretty.

Now I'm working on tuning my grip. Again. Always takes me a long time to adjust to grip changes, but it has to be done. In this case, it's about increasing tightness, which also turned out to really improve second-shot performance with the 9mm.

In using surplus arms, I've been known to have it washing out of the action, bringing hot sludge with it, smoking out of the barrel.

Often, people clean and oil, but forget that dry conditions create, uh, dryness. Lube is your pal.

Ed McGivern's book is also excellent if you are a revolver shooter. Bill Jordan, by all accounts of people who knew him, was really a likable and skilled professional shooter that just happened to work for law enforcement most of his life.

Jordan excelled at gun competitions but unlike a lot of others, he did it when the stakes were high on the job. Good book. Thanks for the reminder. as now I will have to reread mine.

People get weird. Nobody liked some Private coming along and shooting better than they ever could. So I relegated myself to 39 out of 40. Still Expert but not perfect. I'd not shoot at the first 300 yard target and save the round for if I needed it. Got caught too being rodded off the range when I forgot to launch the last one at the end. The look on the DS's face when I got 39 and had one left was priceless. The pushups were still painful at that point too.
I'd been shooting AR's for about 3 years before I went in but I didn't tell them that.

66 You attach a doohickey to your gun, and it tracks where the motions are

I'm a believer. They were horribly expensive when they first came out, but the kid was headed for the big time and we got a deal somehow. It's not just a diagnostic; after you learn to use the charting, it acts like an alpha-wave feedback, and you start to recognize and sense movements (or the lack of them) that you more or less could not sense before. A terrific training tool for the "mental side of the game." Make sure you look at the pre- and post- sections too. A lot happens there.

71 I learned a bit of etymology today.

"Under the gun" is an idiom for being under pressure. However, the original meaning has to do with a military advance getting inside the minimum range of artillery. If the enemy doesn't have artillery that can be deflected to a horizontal position, there is only so close they can fire. (Yes, you could crank the angle UP, but that gets ... imprecise, to say the least, and the guys in the trenches will not appreciate it.) So, any advance that gets close enough is said to be "under the guns."

I learned this because I watched a video (rom a movie) of the cavalry charge at Beersheeba in 1917. The movie is called "The Lighthorsemen" and was made in 1987, as part of a bunch of Aussie war movies (including "Gallipoli" with Mel Gibson). Three miles is a loooooong attack over open ground, but several things broke their way.

73 54 I keep CLP in my range box because I can't count the number of times that a gun has run rough, people ponder why, I dump CLP into it, and then it runs fine.

In using surplus arms, I've been known to have it washing out of the action, bringing hot sludge with it, smoking out of the barrel.

Often, people clean and oil, but forget that dry conditions create, uh, dryness. Lube is your pal.
Posted by: Former Gun Owner A.H. Lloyd
====
My CLP use came from Uncle Sam. During annual qualifications, we always seemed to have to clean the MTU's dirty weapons to demonstrate proficiency first, then shoot, and then clean our own shot weapons.

It isn't the best lube, it isn't the best cleaner nor solvent, but it is good enough for range use on modern semi auto pistols or AR's.

I don't use it on my shotguns, revolvers, and collectibles.

Most issues with reliability are caused by magazines - either a failure to insert properly or poor quality control.

A clip-fed pistol, should eliminate this, and this is why the Austrians decided to stay with clips in the Steyr-Hahn.

Having shot one, I'm going to say they are the ne plus ultra of steampunk pistols. Looks like a Colt 1903, had a cross-bar for disassembly, loaded via clip, rotary barrel, esoteric caliber.

79 And, with the 1000 yard range report. First, though, a side trip. The day before, I headed out to check on some stuff I'd loaded. ES was okay but not great, darn it. But, from an accuracy standpoint @ 200 yards, the loads were lights out. But, 200 yards isn't 1,000 yards.

So, on to the match and, it went about like I expected, badly. 83 and a last place. I couldn't get the wind dialed plus, the wind decreased during the period of time I was shooting. To almost 0. I realize now I made a couple of bad choices while shooting which cost me. One was elevation. Elevation was between clicks on the scope. I elected to stay low, under the cross hairs, rather than high and having to hold just down a bit. The other was sighter shot which basically went where I had the rifle pointed while trying to correct for the wind. Instead of just staying on that spot, which was guaranteed to keep me inside the 8 ring, at worst, I thought I'd try to get set up better, which meant I wound up throwing lead all over the place. Live and learn.

In this respect, the XM9 program failed. The Army wanted the XM17 competition to fix this problem. SIG delivered what Uncle wanted.

Your Mausers, Enfield, etc. don't care about what happens to the clip after you mash the rounds into the magazine. The Steyr-Hahn is the same way. Rip those buggers into the magazine and there you are.

Clearing the magazine is merely releasing the button that looks a lot like a slide release - which can produce hilarious results when you confuse them.

My Carcano - when not residing in a lake bottom - did not run well. Like, repeated screwdriver interventions.

However, I now have some dummy rounds to work the feeding issue, which is probably related to the compressed layers of cosmoline I've been digging out of it.

I used to restore old military rifles and Kroil was invaluable to let me actually remove old screws and pins that were stuck. I spiffed up an old WWII era No. 4 mk 1 Enfield and I swear it had sands from the battle of El Alamein crammed into the receiver crevices along with mummified gunk. Went through quite a few bamboo bbq skewers and Kroil to get all the crud and maybe rust or dirty cosmolene out the the crevices.

Ultrasonic is what some folks use which is fine for modern firearm parts but Brits applied a heavy enamel paint (Suncorite) and an ultrasonic cleaning of screws, pins, trigger guards, etc. would remove it leaving only rough WWII parkerization finish behind. Did it the slow way instead.

Back when I was shooting regularly, it was a problem sometimes to go from two stage triggers on my older bolt action rifles to AR single stagers.

I have a two stage cartridge trigger (from whom, I have to admit I don't remember) on my AR-10 but single stage on my other ARs. Went through a building phase during the late Obammy years in different cartridges so I could keep shooting-7.62 Russian, 6.8 Spec, and 6.5 Grendel. The 7.62 Russian AR was the cheapest to shoot (rigged it up to shoot steel cased ammo), the 6.5 Grendel was nicely behaved, but the 6.8 Spec would have been the one to take hog and deer hunting. Trump came in and my health got worse so I could go less and less to open ranges and shoot.

Charles Askin's auto biography has some pretty disconcerting admissions from him. AFAIK, his claim to have been the first to use a 44 Magnum pistol to get a kill in Vietnam is valid.

If you can still get it, former OSS agent, Rex Applegate's Kill or Be Killed (original press Paladin, went out of business years ago) has some really interesting things to say including about civil disturbances. Applegate, post WWII, spent a lot of time consulting with Latin American governments beset by Commie riots and put down what he knew about the topic in it.

Yesterday I chronoed three different .308 bullets with identical loads of Varget - Sierra Match King 168, Hornady A Tip168, and Sierra Game King 168.
Nothing spectacular, all just over 1 MOA, though the Game King (with the funny scrunched up X tip) grouped significantly better.
I tried them suppressed. Slight improvement in SD and ES, but nothing to right home about. The Game King still was best.
Keep in mind, this is a gas gun. I’m not complaining at all for a battle rifle.

Depends on the barrel, people serious about accuracy shoot barrels that have been lapped to an inch of their life by professionals that have the gift. Often a single patch with just a hint of solvent will remove fouling

The rest of us shoot what the factory system gives us that sometimes has sharp burrs in the barrel, rough lands and grooves with chatter, etc. and so on. The cheaper the barrel, the more the quality varies.

So a rougher carbon-moly steel barrel tends to foul and if not cleaned properly to get the fouling out initially, you can get copper over carbon fouling in the rougher areas that can cause accuracy problems by creating a tight point in the bore and it can cause pitting under the copper and carbon fouling in some conditions. Cleaning to remove carbon and metal fouling over and over again to some extent along with shooting can cause a barrel to smooth out somewhat.

A lot of things are banned/circumscribed/looked poorly upon around the country. I've been advocating for repealing a lot of knife laws, myself. So many things banned because they were the weapon of choice for bad people in movies, and those bad people were common for a bit, and so... banned. (Nun-chaku, swords, "throwing stars", knuckle dusters, etc.)

And, the normal response, "Yes, it's dangerous. That's why I carry it. But it's only dangerous to you if you try to attack me."

But if I'm in the ballpark, does this name ring a bell for anyone?

When I was gathering up stuff to bring to the MoMe, I couldn't find my RCBS priming tool. Then I remembered that I gave it to my nephew* to get him started reloading so I went out and bought a Frankford Arsenal one. Similar to the RCBS but heavier and with better mechanical leverage. It uses its own proprietary shell holders but comes with a full set so by the time you add 4 or 5 at $6/ea, it's about a wash.

Be careful with federal primers using hand primers. They are a bit more sensitive. That being said, you get a better feel about bottoming out on a hand primer than using your press. Just never gorilla grip one when priming using a hand priming tool. Priming a cartridge should never take much force. If the force starts stacking up, then regroup.

There is usually a problem with the brass in some way, whether dirty, crimp has not been removed, not deprimed, or even Berdan brass.

I’ll watch the video on cleaning solutions when I have that much time, but I’ve got a fresh bottle of Hoppes on the shelf. I’m always willing to try something new, if it works.

I used to carry a wholesale sized spraycan of wd-40 on active duty during range days, and then while deployed. No one in my platoon ever had a failure to fire or jam at the range. The wd-40 would wipe right off after firing and leave our m16s nice and clean.

Since i had the maintenance platoon, we kept a big a$$ed wwash tub and a 5 gallon can of triclorofloroethelyne for missile part cleaning. The Pig, and the M2 got a soak after firing and a high pressure blow job with 90 psi @ 18cfm for their speed clean. Top used to get pissed because my mechanics always finished.

This might be kind of a radical position, but I think other than inherently dangerous stuff like radioactive materials, explosives, viruses, etc simple possession of an item or substance should not be illegal absent the state proving your intent to commit a crime with it.

Fixed or collapsing (USMC spec) stock? Full (7 round) or neutered (5 round) magazine? My observation is that the collapsing stock and full capacity magazine command a premium of an additional $300 or more over a fixed stock variant with a neutered magazine.

I know it doesn't help much that I don't know his last name for sure. But if I'm in the ballpark, does this name ring a bell for anyone? (the late..) Bob Day, owner of Day's Arms, San Antonio, TX. His son, David Day, still runs things, there.

The Day Arms heavy barrel PPC revolver, "DayArms 1500" was perfection.

And if you've ever fired my S&W Model 28, you've fired an action that I tuned under Bob's direct training and supervision.

Bob was my primary dealer until my 1999 divorced moved me from the San Antonio area, to the Texas Gulf Coast.

I've got a lead-remover spray, that does okay, and doesn't stink. Weather permitting, I'll go out on the verandah and unleash full-on chemical warfare on the collection.

CLP has done well over the years, and does wonders on clogged up surplus when used in quantity.

285 I kept a smokelole in the house with central air, if it’s truly clean, it actually won’t rust a bit. Condensation due to temp fluctuations will cause rapid flash rust. It damps powder out pretty good, apparently. A clean dry bore is what you want when dealing with black powder.

I picked up a Benelli M4 in the USMC standard configuration (collapsing stock, 7 round magazine, pistol grip) right before COVID hit. Not only is it a very effective combat shotgun, but it's also the mildest recoiling shotgun I've ever shot, even with full power buckshot or slug rounds. Double tapping a target w/ it is quite doable.

You have not missed a damn thing. Russian Mosins and Enfields from India came to the US drenched in the nasty stuff. Each country actually has its unique recognizable cosmolene stench. US stuff was not horrible in smell but not easy to remove from wooden stocks, etc.

When you got the barrel hot enough, you start getting weeping cosmolene grease reliquified if you did not dismount the action from the stock and clean the barrel channel.

What is the diameter of the rifle round fired out of an M4 8-1 rifle? That's a 5.56.
How many push-ups can you do? I did five sets of 47 this morning.
What do you think our most important strategic base is in the Pacific? In the Pacific, Guam is pretty strategically significant.
How many rounds of 5.56 can you fit into the magazine of an M4 rifle? Depends on the magazine, but standard issue is 30.
And what size round does the M9 Beretta standard-issue sidearm for the military fire? A 9mm, Senator.
What kind of batteries do you put in your night vision goggle? Duracell

Left hand is actually worse with neuropathy due to carpal tunnel syndrome (have not yet had the surgery which I did just recently on my right hand and cubital release on the left in Nov.).

I did have the trigger finger syndrome fixed 18 months ago on my left hand along with transposing the nerve at my elbow.

The major issue though is my cervical (and thoracic, and lumbar) discs are disintegrating and having inflammatory arthritis makes it worse by causing bone spurs digging into peripheral nerves going to places like arms, legs, etc. Those same bone spurs show up on hands, elbows, etc. requiring surgery from time to time.

Painful, debilitating at times, but not in the league with people that have cancer or worse problems than mine.

Lucky so far that spinal channel itself has only been mildly affected.

I host an online show called PostAfterThoughts a couple times a week, and a free companion Substack at PostAfterThoughts.substack.com where I post podcast audio and live show announcements. One of my regular listeners/participants, Dale, came to TXMoMe last October.

It's more current events than gub content, but them as I've met on the Gub Thread might enjoy the discourse. Usual show times are 8:15pm Eastern on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

End of plug ...

327 When we came back from the field in Jungle School we would take our M16s into the shower and then take off the handguards and put the uppers in a half 55 gallon drum of kerosene.

328 I picked up a Benelli M4 in the USMC standard configuration (collapsing stock, 7 round magazine, pistol grip) right before COVID hit. Not only is it a very effective combat shotgun, but it's also the mildest recoiling shotgun I've ever shot, even with full power buckshot or slug rounds. Double tapping a target w/ it is quite doable.

342 Right, those vintage pics of Marines washing their weapons in a trough was because of corrosive ammo.

Cosmoline has been banned, I think. Like everything else they force inferior substitutes. Whatever it is they use now isn’t quite the same. It was neat seeing ancient stuff disgorged from some Depot, whether guns or electronics, even rubber items. They knew how to store stuff. For some reason M60 ammo we shot from aircraft had to be better stuff than regular ground pounder ammo. Not sure why it made any difference. It was pretty vintage, and always went bang though.

I do wear shooting gloves that are fingerless because my left hand (and my right hand before the surgery) felt like I was wearing full length gloves anyway.

Still waiting on the right hand's carpal tunnel surgery to fully heal. I seem to heal more slowly now for whatever reason.

I found the padded shooting gloves made it easier to shoot longer strings without pain when I shot my Walther PPK. That weapon, in 380 ACP, had felt recoil higher than most of my pistols, even my stainless Model 60 snubbie.

Nasty chance of getting slide burn too as the original PPK like this one (pre 1968 GCA) had a very short grip. They took the longer PP grip and put it on the PPK to make the newer PPK/s for American export after the GCA passed.

3-strategic ineptitude with coordination of a bad actor - ie Secret Service is hobbled to create conditions where another, umm, agency might have spun up a bad actor who can be successful
4-they are all in on it.

VCI (lets off a metal anticorrosive compound over time) bags which I use for firearms in deep storage. Coat them with RIG grease including the bore (RIG does not harden and keeps air away from the metal) and then put them in a VCI bag. They are actually pretty cheap. 378 You guys will cringe, but the way it worked, when we did an aerial gunnery at sea, we would throw ammo we didn’t shoot overboard. The reason was because if you shot it off, you brought back the brass, and everything was fine, go for a beer. But bringing back live ammo, that meant paperwork for somebody. Probably had to count it before turning it back in, and then probably everybody else involved too. So that’s how that worked.

I did notice precision shooting at a target is pretty tough with a rolling aircraft at a rolling sea, and worn out barrels. Minute of living room maybe.

Yes, I will be shooting 32 ACP (in that 1903 Colt I mentioned, wife's family heirloom) and my 32 S&W Long pistols to get reacquainted with shooting again. I have a 22 LR snubbie (High Std. Sentinel) but it has a heavier trigger pull than I need. Have a few others 22 LR semi autos that I will work into the mix as I hopefully get better.

I'll probably try to shoot off the left shoulder ( I shoot pool left handed actually with my older 22 LR bolt actions when I work up to shooting rifles again. Right upper arm and shoulder are still too painful to risk it.

395 Nasty chance of getting slide burn too as the original PPK like this one (pre 1968 GCA) had a very short grip. They took the longer PP grip and put it on the PPK to make the newer PPK/s for American export after the GCA passed.
Posted by: whig at January 19, 2025 09:20 PM (ctrM5)

Whig, I just picked up a new PPK/S in .32 ACP. The redesigned grip tang behind the hammer fixes that problem for most people. It keeps you from holding your hand too high on the grip. I think the .32 ACP is a really nice shooter out of the PPK/S compared to .380 ACP. I didn't like my one experience shooting a PPK in .380 ACP.

Posted by: Former Gun Owner A.H. Lloyd at January 19, 2025 09:22 PM (ZOv7s)

Speaking of remarkable calibers, the same novel I mentioned previously had me going down the rabbit hole of the .38/44 cartridge. Loaded much more stoutly than the .38 Special, it was apparently hotter than today's .38 Special +P. It was basically the Poor Man's .357 Magnum. Now I have a hankering for an S&W Heavy Duty.

H. Beam Piper wrote a novella using that concept.
4 Day Planet. Ace had a double with that and a Planet for Texans (aka Lone Star Planet).

Piper had his monster hunting crews on the high seas in a horrible weather world using anti aircraft cannons, machine guns, and other such on rolling decks to kill the monsters and load them in the hold (the monsters created some sort of desired natural wax material).

Probably find ebook versions free at Project Gutenberg among other places.

The newer PPK/s are probably ok and even the PPK was fine in a 32 ACP.

But, if you want to control and be accurate with the .380 in the older model, you had to grip high and risk slide bite (which could also cause stove pipes but that is another story).

The PPK had a very narrow and short grip which means the felt recoil was concentrated instead of being spread out. So, for its caliber, it was not pleasant. Bersa has a 'fixed' more or less PPK with a wider grip area that is not as painful to shoot.

That being said, the PPK I have is a W. German post war model (not a Manhurin labeled either) and it is extremely accurate despite the terrible tiny sights) as in several bullet one hole accuracy at short range at 7 yards or less.

Government agency models mostly have 5 inch barrels which are really my preference in revolvers. Shooting Masters are the premium Colt New Service revolvers made only from 1931 or so to 1938. Those in 357 are probably more rare (by numbers produced even if less pricey) than the number of N Frame Registered Magnums of S&W.

I've only seen Shooting Masters in 357 in collectors mags or auction listings.

For the first time, you can cosplay as 007 with a suppressor on your PPK/S. .32 ACP ought to be pretty good out of most 9mm suppressors. My grandfather's pimp pistol shoots those. A nickel plated S&W with pearl handles. It's chambered for .32 Long but he only used the shorts in it, IIRC.

470 They migh use Duracells. So long as the voltage and current is correct anything will work. It woukd save a lot of money.

The BlackHawk battery had a bit of trouble, I noticed the snake eaters modified the acft to use basically a standard automobile batt, or maybe a deep cycle, I dunno. Solved that problem anyhow.

I think Walther triggers are slightly bettter than H&Ks; perhaps the new VP9-A1 trigger will beat Walthers.

472 The night vision goggle batteries surprised me. Duracells? Really? They used to be some weird single application contract proprietary batts, probably cost a fortune. Maybe they got smarter.

Whig-thanks for the response. I looked up Bud Day, and wow, what a guy. I don't think it was him, because I'm sure that the person who told me about Mr. Day would have mentioned a lot of that history.

Jim SND - hello sir, and I think you nailed it. I did a search on his name and a blog was talking about how back in the day he used his skill and knowledge to accurize guns, vs dropping in fancy after-market stuff. That fits in with the .45 I'm aware of. There are two external visual clues that the gun was messed with: an extended front sight and tread grip wrapped around the front of the hand grip lol.

And it's a bonus that you personally knew him! It's too bad about his plane crash. That 1911 is a tack driver and more accurate than most people who would shoot it. Sweeeet trigger on it too.

Thank you! I don't think I would have found his name on my own! Have a good night.

482 463 I am learning that old revolvers can be addictive. And potentially very expensive.
Posted by: That SOB Van Owen
========
Depends, investment grade are very expensive but there are a lot of interesting variants that unless you are a true blue revolver collector, you will not notice.

I picked up a rare pre model 15 S&W revolver that had a 5 inch factory barrel. Turns out those were an overage from an Illinois State Police order in 1958. I paid less than you would have for a newer stainless model 10 or a refinished Victory model because the finish was worn from a holster a bit at the muzzle. Function was excellent.

Same thing stumbling into a Hi Standard Sentinel (first model) in nickel as a snubbie. Paid about half the price those were going for even then. Nickel plating was a bit dirty and so people passed on it.

And so on. Often, if you find a nickel plated revolver, the finish might be flaking but those are relatively easy to have refinished in electroless nickel plating.

485 What I’m getting at, night vision goggles did not use a standard size, like AA or C or whatever. That isn’t how government contracts work.

They had more weirdo (physical dimensions) batteries than you ever saw, for any piece of gear thst needed batteries. Non-standard connectors too. They did have to meet storage or shelf life requirements. Modern flashlight batteries are usually junk, and leak. Brand names don’t mean much.

495 My father was drafted in 1942, and was in both the Louisiana and Texas Maneuvers. They started out with Springfields, and for a while thought they would never get those new rifles. All through training, they were issued cartridges that had a mixture of black powder and smokeless, so every time you used a rifle it had to be cleaned twice -- once in a washtub with soap and water, and then the way we would recognize. They got called out on a problem once while his best buddy's rifle was still in the suds, and when they got back it had a nice coating of light rust all over it. That's when they got a line by line description of what a "statement of charges" was. The private and a couple of his friends worked most of a night getting that rifle in presentable condition.

YouTube has a reputation for censoring more content, though that's mostly due to music copyright issues rather than mentioning evil gubs. She Equips Herself and the Armed Attorneys are two channels I watch that have a lot of firearms content -- I'm sure they have to be very careful about exactly what they say to avoid triggering the YouTube bots.

Rumble is more committed to free speech; not sure how they are on copyright enforcement.
