Wednesday Overnight Open Thread - January 22, 2025 [TRex]

[Office and Gatehouse, Porsche Werks, Gmünd, Austria]

Good evening Horde. The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the overnight variety.

Buckle up. This is the Wednesday night ONT.

***

Saw this on the interweb. Which one of the Horde was at Hobby Lobby? (No, TRex can take no credit.)

More on the top photo: After working for others, Ferdinand Porsche opened his own design company. He ran a design consultancy company in Stuttgart, Germany for a dozen years. The bombing raids on the industrial city of Stuttgart caused him to move the company to a former sawmill in Gmünd, Austria.

When the war ended, Ferdinand Porsche became an involuntary guest of the French for two years (1945-1947). Ferdinand’s son, Ferdinand Anton Ernst Porsche, better known as Ferry, started a new company at the Gmünd location to manufacture cars under the Porsche name. The first was a roadster that emerged in 1948, known as the 356 “No. 1” Roadster. 44 coupes and 8 cabriolets were made in the Gmünd facility before the company returned to Stuttgart. These most original Porsches are highly prized today. The first 356 roadster is in the Porsche Museum collection.

In the days before EweBewb, this video made a global legend of the car, driver and circuit:

Doof acknowledged the birthday of El Rushbo in a recent ONT. Thought the Horde might appreciate seeing where the mortal remains of Mr. Limbaugh reside. Bellefontaine Cemetery is located near St. Louis, Missouri.

A little magic for the ONT:

***

We have previously established that the Guinness Book of World Records has jumped the shark. Way over the shark. TRex is not saying that he could do this, but here we are...

***

In news completely unrelated to anything, TRex would like to thank the fine staff at the Hobby Lobby location in Tupelo, Mississippi. The restrooms are clean and everything on the shelves appears to be in order.

Do not try this at home. If you do, do not post it on social media. Doctor Performs Vasectomy on Himself, Shares Video on Social Media

A Taiwanese plastic surgeon has been getting a lot of attention for sharing a video of performing a vasectomy on himself on social media, as a gift to his wife.

If this was the best option, his wife must be very difficult to buy for.

Sometimes when “secret law” is involved—and that is always the case with the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA)—it takes some time before the public learns how badly the government has violated someone’s constitutional rights via the FISA Section 702 program. U.S. v. Hasbajrami is a perfect example of the phenomenon. Although Judge LaShann DeArcy Hall of the Eastern District of New York issued her ruling against the Biden administration on December 2, 2024, the actual decision in the case was not released until late yesterday, January 21, 2025.

All the basking going on 'round here tonight brings to mind Basking Ridge, NJ:

Basking Ridge, New Jersey’s most famous incident, occurred on December 13, 1776, at about noon. General Charles Lee (1731-1782) was “alarmed” by Major Wilkinson while writing a letter to General Gates about George Washington in an upstairs bedroom of the Widow White’s Tavern. Widow White’s Tavern, named after Ebenezer White’s wife, Mary Brown White, became the centerpiece of Revolutionary War history on that day because It was on this most unfortunate day for General Lee that General Lee became a prisoner of the British Army,

Lee thought himself the better general than Washington. He would not be returned by the British until 1778, where he did his damnedest to try to lose the Battle of Monmouth until Washington rode up and relieved him of command.

Steering wheel which way front wheels point when turned. Gas pedal steers ass end of car like airplane rudder. Mostly. Sometimes.

136 Hi Bulg and Rat!

Oh I wish I had great Inauguration story. My friend came from Ohio. We tried but didn't get tickets to the inauguration (which turned out ok) but set out to go to the Capital One Center on Sunday for the rally. We arrived at 8:30 am (left my house at 7am and took the metro). We stood in line for EIGHT HOURS (the doors were supposed to open at one pm) with rain and sleet. It was awful and we didn't get anywhere near the door. I don't understand why the organizers didn't just tell us that we were too far back in the line beyond the 20K mark to get in and LET US GO!! At the end We turned a corner and the line just dissolved into chaos and people were pushing into barricades. We just left at that point. Missed an hour of the rally on TV. It was just the chaotic crowd scene that I had expected so I will never do this again but glad I tried. My friend has been to 4 outdoor rallies and they were not this crazy.

1. Per the Internet, so it must be true, Trump has cut off all military aid to Ukraine.

3. One of yesterday's many EOs tries to speed up the production and delivery of Liquid Natural Gas, which Europe desperately needs to offset the loss of natural gas from Russia. I'm only familiar with that case in a cursory fashion. If I'm not mistaken the ruling was against the use of a warrantless search. Those can be used against a foreign national, but not a US Citizen.

Seems to me by shooting down the warrantless search on this guy and reaffirming the 4th Amendment, this is good news despite the US Citizen in this case being a piece of human excrement.

Why such a delay occurred between today and Dec. 2nd when it was ruled upon is concerning. Occam's Razor suggests that the Biden Administration had a number of such warrantless searches either done or in the making on other US Citizens, and the Court was "kind" enough not to release the ruling for public consumption so that they could finish up on whatever and whomever was being violated illegally.

When Grant died, Congress offered his widow 3 possible sites for Grant's final resting place: Galena, IL, his hometown; Washington, D.C., near the Lincoln Memorial; or NYC, where Grant & his wife lived after he left the White House.

She chose NYC, in what is now Spanish Harlem. Worst of the 3. Galena would've been the best.

275 Best Porsche for me, would be a low mileage, well cared for, mid '90s 911 Carrera S.

Nothing rip-roaring, no fire breathing track monster.

A nice, well appointed, civilized, GT in which to take in miles of rolling countryside roads, in comfort, style and ease.

And, yes. I'd go full "snob" and spend-out for the fitted luggage for up front and behind the seats.

Funny thing, the 911. No matter how many other "supercars" are parked out in front of a given venue, they'll almost always make room for the 911. Timeless Class and Style, speak volumes.

A high-school/college friend of mine had a Porsche 911 (and he did some competitive track racing - Can-Am I think it was) and he took his car into a few curbs. I know someone who works with Feds. Federal employees are absurdly obstructionist. Back in December when the government nearly shutdown they were freaking out at the idea somebody might accidentally work if there was a shutdown.

But they were also sure there would be a shutdown, so they didn’t do any work the week before the shutdown deadline, either. They were all happy they’d get paid time off.

These people think they are above accountability because they have been for decades. They need to be slapped down hard.

352 Never had a 'hot' car. Did the best tricks in an Apache 10 and Honda Civic hatchback 1.8. One can take fun risks and do stupid things in any car. Oh, in high school slid a VW out of a right turn and crossed a ditch with left front tire riding a cross walk made of two 2x10s. We carefully exited the car without tipping it into the ditch, pushed it back onto the street and drove safe the rest of the day.

353 Morgan was a guest now and then on the radio version of Dragnet, easy to tell as he had a distinctive voice, and probably the.B/W television version. So was Martin Milner, who played Malloy on Adam 12. I learned from the radio program that Joe Friday lived with his mom at 4656 Collis in LA, a nice corner lot. Wiki is in error, on the address I think. Peggy Weber played his mom, she had the old lady voice down pretty good. “Joseph! You need your rest!” “I know, Ma.”

Oh, boy! Roads were narrow anyhow, but especially hard to track in deep, fresh snow.

Caught a tire in the binjo ditch, not too far from friends' house. Walked over & told our tale of woe.

No problem! They had some burly Marine neighbors & we all walked back to our car... and the guys simply lifted up our little Honda Civic and set it back on the road.

430 Last January, we had a cold stretch for couple weeks. Highs from 0 to teens, lows down to -15. Ugh!

Still not sure if the weeping cherry tree will survive. It looked like hell all year & dropped all leaves by end of August. Several large shrubs died back to the ground last winter, but finally sprouted some new buds, very late.

As I was going on about in one of the earlier threads, it was amazing this morning. The little 0.1 - 0.2" of snow accumulation we had just sublimed away, rather than melting. No wetness or liquid water at all. It just sublimed away in the breeze and sunlight. Dew point was just 6F or so. That was quite a rare thing to see for here.

The heat pump isn't frosting much at all. They've all got more intelligent defrost logic that doesn't defrost until it has to.

I'm now looking at GSP's "sub-freezing" records. It's sort of hard to interpret. But it counts days with highs of 32 or below, and streaks of such days.

If I'm understanding, most days in a year with highs 32 or less is 15 days, which was the winter of 1917-18. The longest streak of such days was 6, from Dec. 30 to Jan 4 1918.

This current one will just be a one-day one, looks like, because high for 22nd did make 33F.

433 Any luck getting the roof fixed?
Posted by: JQ
------

A crew of 4 non-English speaking hombres + small excavator got it off of the roof. Repairs will be a different matter. Tomorrow begins insurance hassle.

---------------

Just got a new metal roof (per the wifey's demand) here in Northern AZ. First attempt was a company out of Phoenix that did onsite manufacturing of the steel panels ... ESTIMATE: $115k.

Uh, no ... then found someone local with a good reputation. $65k.

Ouch. But the wifey (we have a rain catchment system per prepping) is happy as it has a 100-year lifetime ... unlike us 29-year-olds.

I think I've got the logic now. They track the first day and last days of the calendar year with highs of no more than 32. Then count any streaks of such days for that year.

More years have such days than not, but it's very few per year here.

Looking at more freezing data records, and this can get confusing. You've got to get your mind wrapped around how they're thinking about things.

They have records of longest and shortest periods of days with lows of 32 or less. You look at the date time spans of days with and without. They call these "inclusive" vs "exclusive" freezing periods.

Yes, I have looked at that, and it is not exactly intuitive. Requires some head-scratching to sort out.

Dayum! That's pricey.

Hubby & I reroofed our house in 2005. Metal. Total cost was under 4k, including scissor-lift & dumpster (Had to strip shingles off) rentals, all materials *and* bought a new extension ladder!

Roof is still just fine. ***knocks wood*** and it should outlast both of us.

No way we could DIY again.

442 Good evening / _Guten Morgen_, Horde! Thanks as always for the ONT TRex.

Somehow I end up learning more about the land outside my front door from your posts than I do by walking outside.

Back home: Rush Limbaugh sleeps in peace surrounded by more than a few of my ancestors in Bellefontaine Cemetery.

In the 1800s most of my family emigrated from said location in Central Europe to eastern Missouri.

I was the one who was nonsensical enough to try to move back over here.

I totally understand now why they left in the first place.

443 [Heh! I see my other comment is 442. That was also my AFROTC Detachment number when I was at university].

Auspicious.
