Evening and morning, late toilers and early risers! 'Tis Woden's Day, and by noon we will be halfway on the long desert trek to the weekend.
I've got my evaluation of my 2024 work with my boss today, and since he knows I'm retiring, it's not gonna be anything consequential. I'll tell him I'm leaving March 31, which I am, and we can start planning about my replacement. Just in time; the upper admin has determined that my office is due to move to another, more distant building this summer. I'd be the one to organize that -- so I'm outta here. Linda's reaction to all this is at about the same level of excitement as if I told her I was giving one of the cats away. I told her, "Work on the fake enthusiasm, it'll come in handy later." Microsoft is restructuring its development organization by combining its AI platform team and developer division into one group. The CEO, Nadella, is a pretty brilliant guy and is willing to place big bets. His first big bet was investing into cloud infrastructure which paid off handsomely. That he is willing to orientate the entire development process at Microsoft to focus towards AI is another one of these big bets. We'll see how it pays off.

AI will likely not be more than marginally successful, at least compared to humans, because part of human language learning is inherited for lack of a better term, we already “know” what the extended meaning of some words are, basically. “It’s not what you say, it’s how you say it.” There are all sorts of cues that impart additional subtle meaning. Computers don’t do sarcasm either.
An AI pizza recipe suggested Elmer’s Glue to keep the cheese from sliding off for this reason. It scrubs the net for stuff, and didn’t catch the error. Anyone that uses AI for anything important is crazy Posted by: Common Tater at January 15, 2025 04:33 AM (x8W60) 21

Nice green leafy suburban cul-de-sac. Now do North Dakota in a blizzard or Arizona in July. Have any of these things actually been tested for range? Carriers working till 8 at night isn’t unusual, the motor delivery routes are pretty long, and they are back at it again the next day. Basically has to charge up in 8 hours, maybe that’s not unreasonable. What kind of power distribution would be needed for 100 of such vehicles in one building? With maybe 75 percent utilization? I’m not that smart but it’s a lot of juice. Posted by: Common Tater at January 15, 2025 04:42 AM (x8W60) 27

Posted by: Common Tater Straight up EVs are stupid as hell for countless reasons, but the two huge ones are a lack of range and the lack of infrastructure to recharge them in anything resembling a functional timeframe. I could see the USPS deriving great benefits from having hybrid vehicles though. With their stop and go slow driving pattern they are prime candidates to benefit from hybrid vehicles. Toyota RAV4s, for example, in poking around the city easily get way over 40 mpg while the gas versions are huffing to get 28 mpg. Employ those on the scale necessary to run the USPS fleet and the payoff should be dramatic. Posted by: Alteria Pilgram - My President has convictions. at January 15, 2025 04:51 AM (Q8Bj8) 28

I learned two nights ago that my Mom's brother had passed away at age 93. Jocular and a man of deep commitment to his family and community. Coast Guard veteran who served on the original icebreaker Mackinaw in the Great Lakes in the early 1950s. Married to a lovely woman with a lovely soul. Father of three daughters, all of whom have carried his commitment to better the areas in which they live. Eagle Scout, whose words of praise for me because I chose to be in the program and serve for coming up on three decades now was the highest accolade that I'll ever receive in that regard. Sole carrier of a Welsh name that signifies that his offspring, his youngest sister's kin, and me and my siblings are one-eighth Welsh ourselves and that our progenitors of that line first arrived here in the late 1840s. A truly good and great man, now able to rejoin his "much older sister", as he jokingly called our Mom. Farewell and Rest in Peace, Uncle. Love you! Next week, the Santa Fe, New Mexico communists begin their 60-day legislative session. This year they're talking about lowering taxes, but only for special interest groups that pay little to no taxes already. For a change, they aren't trying to shut down the oil and gas industry which funds the state and remarkably they aren't losing their minds over trying to ban guns this year. For a change, they're talking about increasing funding to CPS, but if that plays out how these things normally do here, none of that money will go to the kids that would benefit from it and will go directly to pensions and wages of those that torment these poor children. Living in in what is essentially East California is an eye-opening experience.

I don’t follow it too much, but yeah- I’d expect to see a “special report” of a post office somewhere that has used them for say, a year in hot and cold weather, snow, and really see how the carriers look at them. “Yeah these are great!”
Also, what is the viability of the manufacturer- will be in business 3 or 5 years from now? A lot of early adopters buying buses got hosed. They are junk, can’t get parts because the company is no more Posted by: Common Tater at January 15, 2025 05:56 AM (x8W60) 57

Also, a reminder that I posted in the book thread:
John Van Stry's fifth book in his "Wolfhounds" series, "Manifest Destiny" is out. I'm about 60% through it and it's a very enjoyable read (no surprise there.) The push to take back colony worlds from the usurper continues, and you get a really good look at how it's not just about the fleet battles, but it's also about solving logistics and economic problems on the worlds they're taking back, while still continuing to try to push forward and win the war. Further, John's a couple of sales at Amazon for two of his books in the USA and Canada. First, he's got a one-day sale coming up on Wednesday January 22 for "Stand Alone" (the first book in his Wolfhounds series.) It'll be $2.99 on that date. Second, he's got a month-long sale on "Serendipity", the first book in his "Ghost Warrior" series. It's $1.99. So if you've been waiting for a sale to start either of those two series, well there you go. mark hamill is a prime example of what's wrong with the progs, one of many, that he thinks anything that comes out of his pie hole is worth listening to. Why he thinks his opinion is worth listening to over mine or any other US citizen is infuriating, just because he was one actor in a franchise that made history in 1977. 138 Walmart opened a Neighborhood Market with gas pumps in a little burg not far from here. It was in business less than two years. DG took it over and its been going strong for over eight years. I stopped in there and they have fresh produce along with the other groceries, frozen meats only. Usual paper products, health and beauty, clothing and sundries. I figure Walmart was making money, just not enough. DG takes over and decides they can make enough.
