First-World Problems...

plug568.jpg

Is there some special vendor of power outlets that sells only to hotels? You know... those outlets that never work, whether they are in a lamp base or the wall or built into the bedside table.

There probably 50 outlets in my home, and I can count on one finger the number that have failed in the last 20 years. So why is it that hotels can't seem to keep their outlets in good working order? I understand that hotel guests don't respect the equipment in hotel rooms, but how much casual physical abuse do outlets have to tolerate?

I think it is a plot by Big Plug!

Sometimes in hotels the wall outlets are tied to the light switch. Light switch ON=wall outlet (or desk outlet) works. OFF=doesn't work.

31 It isn’t a bad plan to (whilst main breaker is open) to re-tighten the outlet screws very firmly that secure the hot, neutral, and ground connections. They tend to loosen over time. You’ve of course avoided those execrable outlets where the wiring is simply poked into a spring loaded connector.

I thought I was the only one -- which is the nature of First World Problems! You suffer in silence, thinking it's you, or your embarrassing lousy luck, or something you deserved. I spend a lot of time in motels, and those sucker-traps in the lamp posts get me every time. And don't forget the USB ports in them, too. No juice.

As for AirBnBs, they always manage to have the lone outlet on the opposite side of the room from the head of the bed, so you can't fall asleep to something soothing in your phone, like a YouTube playlist of MSM lefties reacting live to the 2024 election.

49 Might not be a First-World Problem, but it's definitely a First-World Scam.

Some enterprising companies out there have taken the archaic concept of a TV Dinner and dressed it up into a bulk mailing exercise. I'm talking about the "Tempo", "Home Chef", "Hello Fresh", "Factor"....etc. There are many.

They gin it up by calling them gourmet, healthy, and better than scratch prepared meals. All they are, are TV Dinners (which IMO always taste like crap)

Hmm, should I tell this story? Why not.

A long, long time ago in a state far, far away I was staying at a Motel6. Truly a hive of scum & villainy. I got so sick of noisy scum in the adjacent room, I grabbed my portable Jump Starter and hooked the cables to the Key-Card Door Lock assembly and fried the electronic mechanism.

Let me tell you, they had a hell of a time getting into that room. The Manager was unhappy, but I was happy for a couple of days. The End.

Eggs. I was making Lemon Bars yesterday so I had to get some eggs. Went to Trader Joe's they're all sold out. Hand-written signs taped to the case saying "One carton per customer." Went to another supermarket and they have the same signs on their case, but thank goodness they do have some eggs. I get the Pasture Raised ones because there's no denying it, they taste the best and I've seen caged chickens and it's horrible. $10/dozen. My god.

149 > 124 I always wondered - wouldn’t a single “1” be sufficient for Trichlorethane? They need three for some reason.

Ethane has a chain of two carbon atoms, each with three hydrogens attached.

The carbon atoms are numbered 1 and 2, but it doesn't matter in this case because the molecule is symmetric.

Now, if you replace three of the hydroges with chlorines, you can have:

Cl H

Cl-C-C-H

Cl H (1,1,1 trichloroethane)

Or:

Cl Cl

Lower electricity costs while still technically meeting legal requirements.

As for carriers, there should be one named the George Washington, and the rest should be named after Revolutionary War battles. Destroyers should be named after Civil War battles. Nothing should be named after politicians. Same with the money. Washington on the quarter and the dollar, Liberty or whatever on the others. Indian head, clown face, whatever, I don't care. Basically in ethane you have a chain of two carbon atoms, each of which has three hydrogens attached (the fourth bond is connected to the other carbon).

If you replace three of the six hydrogens with chlorine, you can either have all three on the first (1,1,1 trichloroethane) or two on the first and one on the second (1,1,2 trichloroethane).

I plug in an 8 foot long, 3-wire extension cord to the fresh outlet behind the bed. That's what I use for my laptop power brick and cell phone charger. Posted by: BifBewalski at January 19, 2025 02:58 PM (MsrgL)

163 Hotel outlets like that get a lot more wear and tear than most home's outlets, since it's the plugging and unplugging of things that wears out the outlet. With home outlets, once you've plugged something in, it mostly just stays plugged in. That doesn't put any wear on it. With a hotel outlet, every guest could plug and unplug something into such an outlet, maybe even multiple times.

Back in the day - that's how it was meant to work. On this topic, I know.

The idea of "grounded" - that three prong plug in your home - isn't as obvious as some may think. For those ambitious enough to take the cover off their main breaker box ? And I recommend most of you not to.

Your neutral - that white wire, the second wire on that two prong plug - is bonded, literally tied with another wire, to the green stuff. That's the stuff that ultimately goes outside to whatever piece of rebar was driven next to your foundation.

I design this stuff. I always run a separate ground. But its not magic. Or fool-proof.

Going from memory - all US coinage in the 1800's featured lady liberty in some fashion - a floating head or seated figure. Then in late 1800s came the Indian head penny - still ok and buffalo nickel - again with an indian head ont the obverse. Then in 1909they went with Lincoln on the penny, Jefferson on the nickel came sometime after then the Roosevelt dime.....up to the current era....we should just go back to Liberty on the coins....

Posted by: Soothsayer at January 19, 2025 03:18 PM (ys6MS)

Oh no ... that's what I meant as well. The electric ones that look like little miniature versions of your grand-dads steam heater.

We're on the same page. They're safe. They put out a great amount of heat. Yes - during an ice storm - I ran a walk-out basement house on two of these bastards and a generator. Didn't bust any water lines.

I think every home that can should own a generator - whatever size they can afford. And at least one of these oil filled portable heat units.

244 Of course, a nuisance trip beats no path to ground at all. I get it.

Posted by: Easy

I've been fortunate. Current house has two panels, kitchen and bathrooms are on one, hvacs, stove, oven, wwater heater and air compressor are on the 2nd. No nuisance trips on the gfi circuits where water is near them.

City put in natural gas a few years ago. As the major appliances are failing, we are putting in gas replacements. I expect the downstairs hvac to be first in that queue. It's undersized (10ton) for the 1st floor and runs all the damned time. Upgrade to 13ton, with gas heater should solve that.

Pro tip: the temperature-pressure relief valve usually doesn't really need replacement. Our water has a buttload of minerals in it that form lime scale on the valve. I have two such valves: I replace the existing one with an older one that I treated with HCl (available commercially as CLR) to dissolve the lime scale. I test it, and it works fine. Meanwhile, I refurb the one I took off.

Self deportations and some companies preemptively conducting mass firings of illegals. Low hanging fruit.

332 309 Alternatively you could run the hose into one of the 5 gal. Home Depot orange buckets. Most of the crud comes out in the first few gallons of drainage anyway.

Good suggestion. Thank you!

Posted by: Anonymous Rogue in Kalifornistan (ARiK) at January 19, 2025 03:57 PM (QGaXH)
______________

My pleasure. The reason the crud comes out early is that the dip tube supplying water to the heater end just above the bottom of the heater, i.e., where the crud is. So blasting water in through the dip tube tends to stir up the crud and facilitate its drainage.

Nope. I only do the above when the TPI valve doesn't operate properly. A few minutes with dilute HCl dissolves the lime scale, and then the TPI operates smoothly.

Actually, you couldn't. HF is not a strong acid (i.e., highly ionized), and in any case its action on lime scale (CaCO3) would produce ... CaF2, which IIRC is not soluble.

Probably the same water we get here in SD. I don't diassemble the TPI valve; I just immerse it briefly (for a minute or two) in dilute HCl. You can see the bubbling as the CaCO3 dissolves. I check that the valve now moves smoothly and freely, then put it on the water heater, do the same thing, and make sure the valve doesn't leak (which is how I know the seals are OK).

I do the same thing with, e.g., our coffee maker (just run the dilute HCl through for a minute, then flush multiple times with water).

Best of all answers ... no. Born in '72. So I got to see all the folks, first-hand, that worshiped Carter. And also Elvis and JFK.

He was a shitty president. JFK put missiles in Turkey that the USSR then put in Cuba that just about got it all going. He was a shit president.

It's a Boomer Thing - to suck off Kennedy. It might be a Millennial thing to suck off Obama. They all were awful.

346 Or are we talking about Bobby Kennedy ? You know, the Kennedy that pissed off the mob by getting elected and then attacked the Teamsters - also known as the Mob - that elected and funded him ?

Or are we talking about Ted ? The Lion of the Senate that let one girl die after a party, then got filmed drilling another one a couple decades later ?
