  • Enron is promoting the Enron Egg, the first home nuclear reactor. (MSN)

Which raises the question: Is it a scam if you are screaming at the top of your lungs that you are scamming people?
Haas said that while small modular reactors do exist, they generally range from the size of a shipping container to a full-sized house. The Enron Egg, he said, is simply too small to generate power at a scale that is both economically viable and safe to operate.
    Yes. Yes it is.

14 Good morning! Pretty chilly out on the patio here in Cowtown but it's gonna be a nice sunshiny day.

Gonna try today for the third time to install the tub. On the first attempt, we pulled the tub outta the box and found the hoses between the jet pump and the outlets kinked. Yesterday we pulled the tub outta the box and found the corner cracked. Had to go to the big box place last night and get a replacement. Each time though, I have to buy the replacement and they have to pick up the faulty tub before they credit my card. I have to say though that the staff at the big orange box store was very helpful and very apologetic.

18 Evening and morning to all the adherents of the AoSHQ Empire! 'Tis the Sun's Day, for all that he seems to be hiding right now, and spending less time showing his dazzly face this time of year. Well, he does that, it's just the Sun's way, don't worry about it.

28 Tech + Pre-book thread grumble: A recent update to the Amazon Kindle line of e-book readers has caused mine to become slow a few days after I do a full restart on it.

You open the cover, and part of the page you were reading appears with its right margin at about the middle of the page, and you wait until it sorts itself out and the right margin moves out properly to the right hand side of the screen. Then you wait a while longer until the UI will respond to your input on the touch screen. The wait time seems to increase each time you open the cover to read if it's been sitting a while, like there's something wrong with the "wake from sleep" routine in the software.

This gets mighty annoying as you used to just be able to open the cover, and start reading and flipping pages within a second or two. From what I've read, apparently this is affecting even the newest Kindle devices.

The temporary solution is to press and hold the power button for 10 seconds until you get the option to restart, then you select that, and wait 3 minutes until it finishes rebooting, then go to your library, and find the book you were reading and re-open it. At least it remembers what page I was on.

A few weeks ago, I was in the dining room and I heard Maddie start meowsering. Now, she often talks (or complains) to herself, but this sounded agitated. I got up and started toward that end of the house, saying, "Maddie, what's wrong?" She came galloping down the hallway, meowing like crazy, and obviously wanted me to follow her into the library. What had happened was that the cats were goofing around and Schroedinger had gotten stuck in the back bedroom with the door closed. I let him out and congratulated Maddie on saving her brother.

58 So last night, the nice couple that we got Frog and Margo from came over to watch the Ravens game with us.

And we all decided to bring Frog and Margo's brother, Bennie with them to see if the kittens remember each other.

Went better than it could have, not as good as we had hoped.

Frog and Margo were relatively indifferent to his arrival, but Bennie was ill at ease and mostly stayed under furniture.

Hopefully with several visits they can get back to the constant playtime that they enjoyed with each other.

63 "Bennie likely was put off by new surroundings."

That was almost certainly the case.

Our two, due to circumstances have been exposed to long car rides, strange homes and other stuff sim they came home with us.

And they have adapted remarkably well to it.

Bennie has remained at his birth home, and this is his first real change except for Vet visits, which are about five minutes rom his home.

I'm pretty optimistic about a good final outcome.

Here in the country, skid loaders, front loaders, and tractors all cleared driveways. Self-reliance is a thing in rural areas, as is helping the neighbors.

Impossible to do.

The crazy part?

I had to pay vehicle taxes and renew registration on Thursday, so I went down to the County office building in our sleepy little town.

It could have been five minutes from walking in till walking out.

it could have....but I wound up just having a pleasant conversation with the clerk at the window about just small things.

And despite it's flaws, it's one of the reasons why I love our little town. Even the Government workers are helpful and nice.

207 A train full of toxic sludge crashed in Palistine Ohio, and it was as close to ignored as was possible in DC. You were all shocked, shocked that they hate Trump voters more than they love wildlife.

Something to think about when California gets 100% funding for the current thing. If you wonder, full of consternation, why dems vote for dems, here is the answer. (Yes I know that it isn't an excuse, but a feeble explanation.)

We need an "Appalachian Relief", ostensibly for remote rural areas, but in reality shaking the money tree for Trump voters on par with what dems do. And under the assumption, right or wrong, that another dem presidency is right around the corner.

Someday we will escape this ruinous stupid game, but until then, we should intend to win rather than lose.

Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant

I like having a kindle, but it sure is a clunky mover. We have one that is a good 20 years old, and a newer one, about 11-12 years old.

I can't go directly to amazon to get books on either of them, unless I have about 40 minutes to spend waiting for pages to open. Once I purchase or download the books using a laptop, they'll be there when I boot up the kindle, but it's too sluggish to connect to internet for anything else. Using the thing to view AOSHQ is right out.

243 AI will eventually be able to detect AI.

At that point, the white-collar tech jobs will have a lot of layoffs, simply because HR will be replaced by AI, and AI will detect all the people that are using AI to do their supposed jobs (see previously-mentioned HR), and cost savings will be seen by having to pay meat-bags to be the middle-organisms for transerring AI communications.

Some jobs will remain, mostly as a source of further creative input for AI. Mostly those employees that actually used their brain instead of turning it off to let the AI take over all thinking.

Now, an interesting thing happens if you apply this to schools and colleges..

246 128 How fast can a nuclear powered aircraft carrier move at full screws?
Posted by: Boss Moss at January 12, 2025 07:41 AM (YeGMU)
I don’t know (and choose not to look up) the actual numbers, but I’ve read the nuclear powered Enterprise was fast enough that they had to strap down the aircraft to keep them on the deck when she was at full speed.

The Enterprise was the fastest of all our nuclear carriers. The idea was speed was safety, until they realized out running support vessels wasn’t a good idea and they couldn’t outrun nuclear tipped missiles anyway.
