Hobby Thread - January 18, 2025 [TRex]

20060106-DSC_0061.jpg

Welcome hobbyists! Pull up a chair and sit a spell with the Horde in this little corner of the interweb. This is the mighty, mighty officially sanctioned Ace of Spades Hobby Thread and we are rolling out the red carpet.

We gave the Ace of Spades Wheel of Hobbies(TM) a spin and the result shows the Wheel pays attention to current events. It said PRESIDENTIAL HISTORY. Hail to the chief!

***

Update: At the time of posting, DJT is currently in the air en route from Florida to Washington DC (SAM47 for those tracking the flight which is a nod to DJT being the 47th President of the United States).

How is Presidential History a hobby you might ask? Let me count the ways...

Are you a collector of election memorabilia? Buttons, bumper stickers, pennants, etc.? Tangible election ephemera might be mostly a thing of the past, but most antique stores or malls have at least one election themed display case.

Are you a collector of White House memorabilia? Notecards, playing cards, State Dinner invitations or menus, and anything with a White House seal is unique. While not rare, many collect ornaments from the White House Historical Society.

Have you toured the White House? Have you been there for a special event like the Easter Egg roll? Have you been to the White House for a State Dinner or ceremonial bill signing? Have you toured though to see the full Christmas decoration treatment?

Are you a visitor to Presidential birthplaces, homes, or burial spots? The old joke for many colonial era residences is that "George Washington slept here." Perhaps so, but he also built a swank estate on the Potomac River called Mount Vernon. Do you have a favorite?

Are you a visitor to Presidential libraries? FDR's library in Hyde Park was the first official Presidential Library. Others before him took measures to collect their papers, such as Rutherford Hayes in Fremont, Ohio. My unofficial count is 13 official physical libraries open and operating. Do you have a favorite?

Are you intrigued by Presidential aircraft? Fixed wing and helicopters are on display at various locations around the country. Air Force One and Marine One designations follow the President rather than the aircraft. Some retired aircraft live at presidential libraries but others are scattered elsewhere.

What are you hobbying these days? As per usual Hobby Thread etiquette, keep this thread limited to hobbying. Your participation does not need to limited to the theme. All hobbying is welcome. However, politics, current events and religious debates can live in threads elsewhere. Given the subject matter, let us discuss the office without focusing on the questionable conduct or judgement of the occupants. Play nice. Do not be a troll and do not feed the trolls. Please dress appropriately in the oval office.

The National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Florida has a VH-3A Sea King helicopter that was used by Presidents Nixon and Ford. A similar helicopter - the one in which Nixon departed the White House after resigning - is on display at the Nixon Library in Yorba Linda, California.

20250104-20241222-IMG_20241222_132943516.jpg

The Presidential Libraries of George H. W. Bush and Ronald Regan have helicopters used as Marine One during their terms. Together with Nixon, I think those are the only three with a Marine One chopper.

The Navy Museum in Pensacola also has the S-3 Viking President Bush used for his "Mission Accomplished" trip to the USS Abraham Lincoln. It was designated "Navy One" for the trip.

A major part of the National Museum of the Air Force at Wright Patterson near Dayton, Ohio is comprised of Presidential aircraft. The museum has some other cool stuff too...if you're into that sort of thing. Which I'm sure you are, right?

TRex asked Grok for the three most underrated US Presidential libraries. No idea what the reasoning is, but the answers are Ford (Michigan), Hoover (Iowa), and Truman (Missouri).

The Ronald Reagan Library in Simi Valley, California is consistently the most frequently visited.

This is Richard Nixon's Library in Yorba Linda, California:

Five very random trivia bits about Presidential burial sites:

1) Only two U.S. Presidents are buried in Arlington National Cemetery. You know Kennedy, but did you know Taft?

2) Woodrow Wilson is the only President buried in Washington, D.C.. He is buried at the Washington National Cathedral.

3) John Adams and John Quincy Adams are the only Presidents to share a burial site. They are both buried in a family crypt at the United First Parish Church in Quincy, Massachusetts.

4) As per his wishes, Andrew Johnson was buried in Greeneville, Tennessee with his copy of the Constitution and his body wrapped in the American flag.

5) Seven Presidents are buried in Virginia, the most for any single state.

Abraham Lincoln funeral flag sells for $525k

20250115-Lincoln Flag.jpg

President Abraham Lincoln’s coffin flag, used in the funeral-train procession after his assassination in 1865, sold for $525,000 Friday at Guernsey’s. The high pre-sale estimate was $1.2 million.

The flag, which sold for the first time publicly, was draped from Lincoln’s coffin during the journey from Washington D.C. to his burial site in Springfield, Illinois.

Help for hobbying Horde: Request received from BifBewalski:

I'm considering getting a Falcon 2 40w laser for making parts for my rockets. Centering rings, bulkheads, electronics sleds, deployment charge holders, parachute protection bays (keeps them from melting when the deployment charges fire).

This is the model, I'm thinking about.

Basic question...does anyone in the horde have experience with these, what are the wish I'd done it differently things they noticed? Would a three-axis hobby cnc be as good at the same-ish price point?

I like the idea of creating intricate puzzles, doodads, and maybe a naked pendulum wall clock.

Solid Brix Studios spent two years crafting this enormous diorama of a scene from the Clone Wars using over 250,000 Lego pieces. Nuts. Professional large scale Lego assembly challenges the foundational principles of the Hobby Thread, but thought some among the Horde would enjoy seeing.

Interested in watches? How about macro photography? If so, this video is for you:

Being able to see activity at a micro scale is fascinating. It often shows a remarkable amount of intricate activity in its own micro world. Among other things, the contact between gears in this video caught my attention.

Scott sent this fascinating video showing the development and painting of custom treatments to Aurora Monsters Kits:

Thank you!

For the automotive inclined among the Horde, the ex-Steve McQueen Gulf Porsche 917 failed to sell on the auction block this afternoon. It reached a high bid of $25 million. Still could sell through a negotiated deal but $25m was not enough to buy it on the block. Some guy named Seinfeld is the current owner.

7 Well, let me see how many I can think of. I've been to the LBJ Library many times having been born in Austin. (I worked across the street for 25 years.) Also been to the George H.W. Bush Library in College Station. Also been to the LBJ Ranch which was surprisingly cool.

Seen the two Adamses burial place in Quincy. John Adams home, Peacefield, is definitely worth seeing, particularly the library.

Been to the Lincoln home in Indiana, the Hermitage, Moncticello, Mount Vernon, and James Madison's Montpelier (my favorite).

22 Never got into collecting presidential stuff or learning presidential trivia but I've had my share of contacts.

I met President Eisenhower and shook his hand when he came to town for a ceremony when I was in grade school. We had a box of M and M's with the presidential seal and (I think) a ball point pen. I've visited the homes of George Washington (beautiful), Jefferson (fascinating), and Monroe's home, Ash Lawn (homey).

One item I wish I still had. I had a bumper sticker on my car in the late 70s: "Don't blame me I voted for Ford".

35 Afternoon, hobby folken,

No, I've never collected anything to do with presidents. My mother did keep the Life or Look issues re: the JFK assassination, and I may still have them -- but less about JFK than as a slice of American history and pop culture.

The "Don't blame me, I voted for Ford" bumper stickers, and similar ones ("Somewhere in Kenya, a Village Is Missing Its Idiot") would be cool to have. I did have one in 1996, though I didn't put it on my car: "Picard/Riker '96."

38 Yay, hobby thread! This week I moved into making one of the tunnels. I was planning on doing two, each on the narrow ends of the track, but I'm rethinking that as I'm not sure I like the symmetry. I may do canyons on the other end, which still disrupts LOS but has a different look.

A few engines haven't been working, but hitting the underside with oil seems to help.

In addition to that work, I put away some Testors paints that are still liquid, but were bought when Carter was president. I need to clear out space because it's winter in Michigan, and that means time to play Warhammer 40k.

My grandmother had a Chinese ornamental screen and in due time I inherited it. It's nice, quality material and all that, but I didn't think much of it until my mother informed me that it was part of the first wave of Chinese imports when relations were restored. With the grandkids running around, we put it away.

Naturally, one of my kids immediately set it up as a privacy screen and we had serious words about heirlooms and respecting property.

66 My interest in presidents is 90 percent historic: Washington, Jefferson and a few others. In my opinion there were only two excellent, but not perfect, presidents in the 20th century: Coolidge and Reagan. Honorable mention to Eisenhower. My distaste (huge understatement) for Wilson, FDR and LBJ (spits) limits my interest.

I won't collect it but I suspect there will be some 'interesting' memorabilia from the second Trump term.

I can't find the pic anywhere now, but there's a particular perspective on the Bill Clinton library that shows exactly where Hillary's library was intended to go. His is a big ol' box sitting next to a big ol' field of approximately the same size. It's a space not unlike that house she bought in Chappequa for the Secret Service to hang out in once she was elected and weekending at home.

Posted by: Blonde Morticia at January 18, 2025 07:12 PM (lCaJd)

176 Presidential history - I've been a frequent visitor of the Reagan library given its proximity to Casa Sin Problemas. Waited about 8-10 hours to file past his coffin. Pretty emotional. Driving home, the line of headlights still lining the exit ramp and another mile back on Hwy 23 was almost as emotional. The home that I owned at the time was in the flight path of the fighter jets (codenamed Rainbow and Rawhide) that did the flyby during his interment. After watching it on TV, I ran out and watched them fly over the house. Reagan gave the commencement address to my graduating class of Seton Hall University in 1983. He'll always be my favorite..

242 I toured the Whitehouse in 66 as a HS senior, we hicks walked through like we owned the place. Hell, LadyBird even acted like we owned the place. And you know what, we’re about to own it again.

244 Probably willowed, but a presidential memory, not memorabilia. My father was good friends with GHWB in Midland, Texas, while both were coming up in the oil business. According to my mother (who was also good friends with Barbara), I used to be given baths with GWB when we were 6 months old. The math doesn't work with GWB, but it might have been Jeb!, or my mother was making it up, which is more likely. Anyway, way later when GWB was running for governor of Texas, a rally was held in Houston. My father and I attended, and as GHWB was exiting, he stopped, recognized my father, and came over and shook his hand. It must have been 40 years after Midland. After that I always admired GHWB, GWB not so much.

246 Actually, I heard that Obama was flying in from his hometown of Nairobi, Kenya via Air Hamas. But first making a stop in Mecca to pray with his childhood buddies.

Odd that Mary answered her own question also ????

249 I've been through the White House and Mount Vernon. Had lunch in the senate dining room. Also Washington's distillery. I was in Kansas City in '76 when the Republican convention was there. Saw lots of network people and thouth they were all very made up and a bit sleazy. I was at the hotel when Reagan arrived and didn't know anything political but when he arrived he got on top the the car and spoke to the crowd for quite a while. I remember thinking this guy has it!

250 I got to your the White House in 1983 on a senior high school trip. It was pretty incredible knowing that Reagan was President at the time.

I got to participate in "Presidential Classroom " a four day trip to DC. We toured the WH, Congress and met some of out Representatives. We also got to go to many of the Smithsonian Museums. The Mall and the Lincoln Memorial and the National Monument were amazing. It was pretty impressive to a teenager.

252 Back in the day, we did a Presidential support mission hauling in a C-130 two of Bush One's Secret Service SUV. We went all thru the South. It was a lot of fun. Another time, we were shutting Navy pukes from San Clemente to San Nichol's Island. AF one came in with President Reagan and we got to get real close to him. After passing thru security, including a metal detector, I realized I had my Gerber dagger sheathed in my boot. That could have been an interesting conversation if it triggered the device. Then again, I wondered why it didn't go off....

253 Gerald Ford was an Omaha boy, and some group decided to turn the location of the family home into a tribute to him. One of the features were several upright slabs of granite, and Himself laid out and sand blasted the names of previous presidents. A squabble broke out over the proper abbreviation for the state of Georgia. As his habit when he wasn't sure of the spelling of something, he called me. My head was not functioning that morning, and I agreed with the "GEO" faction. Two days later, my brain untangled itself and I realized it should have been "GA", but it was too late. Himself was able to fix it, but it does come up occasionally during certain domestic exchanges of opinion.
