50 that map meme missed "Confederación de Estados de Centro America" when El Salvador turns into the next Switzerland.

Generals Simon Bolivar and Jose de San Martin met with their respective armies on conquering the final holdouts of the Spanish armies, and had a long private drinking party, in which it was supposed that they both spent a long time discussing their vision of the future of South America. Bolivar went back to Nuevo Granada, and began the unsuccessful attempt to wield what is now Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia into a unified state, a task that ruined him and had him bitterly state on his death bed that "to serve revolutions is to plow the ocean".

San Martin on his return to Argentina, left and went to France where he died an old man.

depends on your definition. Government needs to sell Treasuries or similar to cover the deficit spending, which is creating money out of nothing but promises of future revenue, that is what Polievre was talking about, but with the Fed system, the Fed itself backs loans by the various banks, and then "makes it real" by having the borrower work to pay off the loan over time, and the bank and the Fed pocket the interest. That sort of check kiting is also inflationary, since it is loaning out money the bank doesn't actually have and the government doesn't have anything to do with it.
But this is the way money is created outside of the Treasury demanding coverage for their Treasuries or other bonds.

but that is a quibble, not a complaint. He spoke clearly and hit the important parts.

245 Alexander S. Vindman @AVindman 9h
Statement on National Security Staff Firings
Yesterday, President Trump’s National Security Advisor, Mike Waltz @michaelgwaltz , announced a sweeping directive to terminate all national security staffers loaned from other departments and agencies who serve in apolitical, non-partisan senior staff roles. Waltz framed this decision as a means to eliminate Biden-era appointees and enforce absolute alignment with Trump’s policy agenda. Notably, Waltz justified this move by referencing my role in exposing Trump’s abuse of power, which led to his first impeachment. Using my actions as a rationale, Waltz aims to purge scores of professionals from the Department of Defense, Department of State, CIA, and other agencies—not because of their conduct, but due to a demand for blind allegiance to Trump. This approach sends a stark and troubling message: in a second Trump administration, only political loyalists will be permitted to serve on the NSC.

Posted by: andycanuck (iMpf5) at January 10, 2025 11:37 PM (iMpf5)

246 Alexander S. Vindman @AVindman 9h
To set the record straight, I served as an apolitical detailee and a faithful Army officer implementing President Trump’s national security agenda, as outlined in the National Security Strategy he approved. My actions did not conflict with Trump’s stated national security policy. My reporting of corruption—my refusal to remain silent as Trump engaged in criminal activity, undermined free and fair elections by pressuring Ukraine to investigate his political rival, Joe Biden, to steal the 2020 election—and my refusal to betray my oath to the U.S. Constitution are why I was fired. These are the same reasons professional staff are about to be purged, and apolitical staff will be barred from the NSC.

Posted by: andycanuck (iMpf5) at January 10, 2025 11:37 PM (iMpf5)

247 Can O Corn ran from Chicago to Seattle or something like that. The “art deco” locomotives were neat I think.

One thing Hollywood westerns get wrong is railroads. It cost a fortune to build the transcontinental railroad and the investors needed to make their money back. Passenger ticket prices and freight charges were high. I crunched the numbers once and they were roughly equivalent to flying First Class today.

There would rarely have been scrubby swarthy cowboys or any sort of lowlifes on the trains as they couldn’t afford it.

Posted by: Common Tater at January 10, 2025 11:37 PM (NxbtL)

248 Alexander S. Vindman @AVindman 9h
On the surface, it is reasonable for a president to seek a loyal and trusted teams faithful to their agenda. However, absolute loyalty should not be the exclusive qualification, overriding competence, experience, and fidelity to a constitutional oath. An NSC staffed with “team members who are 100% aligned with the president’s agenda” will not only diminish the NSC’s capabilities but also erode continuity in policy. Worse, it will create an environment where dissenting views, even those grounded in experience and ethical responsibility, are stifled.

The so-called “Vindman Rule” sets a dangerous precedent by ensuring that only political loyalists can serve on the NSC, advise the president, and interact with the president and top decision-makers. Such an approach will have a chilling effect on senior policy staff across the government. Talented professionals, wary of being dismissed for principled stances or offering objective advice, will either self-censor or forgo service altogether. This undermines the very purpose of the NSC: to provide the president with the best possible advice as well as the coordinating team to advance U.S. national security

Posted by: andycanuck (iMpf5) at January 10, 2025 11:38 PM (iMpf5)

249 The implications of this loyalty-above-competence model are dire. By purging the NSC of apolitical, experienced professionals, Trump and Waltz are hollowing out the institutional expertise required to navigate complex global challenges. This will create a policy apparatus incapable of discerning sound policies from reckless impulses—or worse, one that actively disregards legal and ethical obligations to implement Trump’s personal whims. Consider the implications: Would Department of Defense detailees still counsel against invading Greenland or Canada or feed those foolhardy thoughts to curry favor? Would FBI detailees agree to engage in political reprisals against Trump’s enemies to serve in the NSC? These are not far-fetched concerns but real dangers inherent in the precedent Waltz establishes.

This announcement also presages broader plans by the Trump administration to fire tens of thousands of senior apolitical government officials and replace them with Trump loyalists. By prioritizing loyalty above all else, the Trump administration will significantly undermine the foundations of good governance, jeopardize U.S. national security, and weaken U.S. democracy.

I just numbed my brain reading UK DM and the $40 dry martini and fancy pizza. Women are calling their doctors for emergency weight loss injections and fillers. Chrissy Tiegan is exposing a side boob, which is normal. A shrink is in the lobby as well of one hotel.

Some CEO's are mad because other CEO's have better suites than them. Demi Moore and daughters have about nine dogs in their suite, which must be doing wonders for Bruce Willis.

There is the scent of dog pee all around and near the pool, and a genius is getting a fire hydrant (hell, a use for one!) and small dog pee area. Dogs are pooping in the lobby and no one cares as they bring such comfort (I am sorry, but I don't think so).

Depending on what you want to do, a temp agency might be a good option. They can get you placed quickly, and it's an easy way for an employer to see if you fit in without all the trouble of hiring you, until they're sure you can be of use to them.

Also, if there's a local university, they often have a temp help roster that you put your application in, and if they need someone to fill in, they contact someone off the roster. Also a good way to get your foot in the door.

Part of the problem we're facing as a nation is that progressives genuinely don't understand that their political views are political. They think it's just "common sense" and there's something wrong with everyone else for not simply falling in line with it.

I'm frankly not sure they even have the intellectual capacity to classify their own political views as being political.

278 There were two identical twins in my Basic Training co. It was grest, because the Cadre decided to have a little fun with that.

Some Drill Sergeants were purposefully left out of the loop somehow. While we were run almost constantly, the DS would run in shifts. So a DS shows up and he tells identical twin #1 to to report for KP at the mess hall or whatever. Then, he goes to the Barracks and finds identical twin #2 buffing the hallway or whatever. He proceeds to blow his stack. “Didn’t I tell you to go to KP!?”

“Drill Sergeant, that was my brother” etc. Hilarity ensues

192d Tank Battalion, Wisconsin National Guard, went into Japanese captivity in the Philippines. In 1945 after the cessation of hostilities they held a muster back home.

62% of the unit died as a POW. Out of all the sets of brothers in unit, only one set of two lived through the ordeal.

The first sergeant did them a solid at the end of AIT. In the Army infinite wisdom, they received orders to two different duty stations.

Top cooked up a scheme, where one of the brothers would “fail” the PT test and have to recycle or something like that, and had time to pull strings and get new orders cut to the same duty station as his brother. They were good troops, and they wouldn’t have done that if they were dirtbags.

Well, Snowmageddon is over. We didn't get that much here. More than a dusting, but just patchy accumulation. Then sleet and freezing rain. It's winding down, just a little freezing mist. There is some glaze forming, but it's not too bad.

Temperature got up a smidge above 32F before it started snowing. The radar was painting snow well before it made it to the ground. Surface air was do dry, it was evaporting/subliming for a while. That was reflected in the temp/dew point graph from the station. Temp falling, dew point rising. That cooled it down to about 29 and there it stayed all afternoon, rising a bit after sundown to 31, where it's at now.

That's warm enough to keep to much ice accumulation. Still can hear dripping in the woods, but glaze is forming.

Just watch the sports drafts and then how their top picks turn out compared to the lower rounds or the undrafted a few years down the line.

I was wondering how the "tipping bucket" rain gauge would behave during this. It can measure solid precipitation, but the stuff does accumulate in the funnel.

Didn't register anything until 7PM. Temp was 30F, and some freezing rain was falling. That started melting some of the stuff in the funnel I think. It started tripping pretty good, and soon registered 0.13". It then steadily tripped after that, now up to 0.34" total.

It *can't* measure solid, I meant to type.

If my recently late cousin were still alive, tomorrow morning he would've done the proper liquid equivalent measurement. He had one of those big NWS standard rain gauges. When you have snow, sleet, you take the inner cylinder out, and let the solid accumulate in the large outer cylinder.

You then take that in, melt it, and measure the liquid equivalent. If you need to melt it fast, you carefully measure hot tap water in the inner cylinder, pour that in the outer one and melt everything. You then subtract what you added to melt.

I have a friend who is paranoid about 'best by' dates. Depending on the product, I am more or less paranoid. I take the exp. date on a can of tomato sauce more seriously than the exp. date on a box of mac 'n cheese, e.g.

She also will not eat any meat from the freezer if it's over a year old. Told her I just has some 2019 bacon and a 2022 chicken breast. 'It tasted okay? You're not sick?'

If you prep your food properly for freezing, all those bullshit warnings are just that, bullshit.

Seriously, a local grocery store manager got to telling us about Little Debbie's demands. The displays had to be where she wanted them, in a high visibility part of the store. He went on about that, and I forget the details.

And no competing products were to be anywhere nearby. And a Little Debbie rep would come out and stock and arrange the displays.

If you didn't go along, no Little Debbie for you.

I think they have since relaxed some of that.

412 At some point, incompetence and malevolence are indistinguishable.

China government supposedly provides for the death penalty anytime damages exceed the equivalent of $50 million, and due to malfeasance or fraud.

I think Americans have been anesthetized or conditioned to do nothing, having outsourced everything to the professionals eons ago. Notice how skittery the usual suspects get about people “taking the law into their own hands”. This concept was part and parcel of virtually every Western or oater ever made. It persisted well into the 1980s at least - “Why do you need a gun? That’s what the cops are for”.

Still hear it now and then, in a perverse way, when some punk robber gets ventilated by a customer at the liquor store or whatever. The family members of the decedent will be sort of put upon or offended. The press dutifully editorializes and sanitizes everything when forced to cover a story.

“Robbery gone bad” or “Botched robbery”. Just give them your money. Do what they want. Etc.
