Top Story

  • The Pilet 5 and Pilet 7, two handheld computers from another dimension, launched as a Kickstarter project two days ago. There must be a lot of people visiting here from that dimension because the project hit its funding goal in five minutes. (Kickstarter)

They're not cheap because so far they're only planning to make a thousand or so of them, and you have to add a Raspberry Pi 5 yourself, but they do look very cool in a retrofuturistic kind of way.

So far the larger Pilet 7 takes a Bluetooth keyboard and not the physical add-ons that we've seen pictured with the handmade prototypes, but those are planned if the project hits $1 million in funding. And since it's reached $578,000 in just two days that seems pretty likely.

I'll keep an eye on this one. I have a Pi 5 so that expense is already covered.

5 I posted this at the tail end of the ONT. Yesterday I found out that the ex-Mrs. Wolfus No. 2 passed away from cancer . . . in late 2015. Stumbled across her obit on the local newspaper archives, and though she'd changed her first and middle names, I recognized the names of her family. No idea if it happened here or elsewhere; the obituary was unclear.

I don't know what to think or feel or do. Probably the thing to do is send a card and a letter to her mother -- if *she's* even still alive (she'd be 84 now), and even if she still lives in the same house. Not that I know what to say.

Life be weird, people.

My uncle called last night to tell me that their son, my closest cousin is hospitalized, and will have triple bypass surgery this morning.

So for those who are so inclined, a prayer for my cousin would be appreciated.

This year seems to be coming in the same way that last year ended.

Except for the nation.

I have the highest level of optimism for the nation right now.

Thanks, Ciampino. For many years I considered I was more widowed than divorced, as I felt the girl I'd known and loved had died and been replaced by an alien creature. I'd had no contact since 1992. Now she's gone for real, and I never got a chance to say goodbye.

Firstly, if they want Fed/Trump help rebuilding then they better rebuild.
Secondly, people who lost their homes are going to be really pissed off when they find out all the shenanigans, including no water, that transpired. Reminds me of when Subway tried their "Beyond Meat" (plant based) "meat"balls up here. They offered two trays, one actual meatballs, the other the fake meat. I ordered a meatball sub with real meat, and it was okay.

The next time I went in, I confirmed I wanted the meatball sub with real meat based meatballs. What I got ... wasn't. The texture and taste were wrong, and I didn't feel well. Whether the employee pulled from the wrong tray, or mixed the trays up, or filled the actual meat tray with the wrong bag, or the company was pulling a fast one, I don't know. What I do know is that was my last trip to Subway. (This was years ago.)

"I've got my station linked to Wundeground, and boy do they have time bugs. I was disgusted at the botch it made on the DST to standard transition. The daily graph couldn't handle that, with the 13 hour day in local time. Graph was all messed up."

In late 2015, Weather Underground (and the Weather Channel) was purchased by IBM. The problems with time bugs began around then (if I'm remembering correctly.) Typical IBM, they have, or acquire an old technology property, and they just do the bare minimum to "maintain" it, along with the fact that they'll accept bug reports from people (I made two or three) and they've got support staff to try to mollify the customers, but nothing actually gets fixed. IBM had so many layoffs of older workers who had legacy knowledge... They're a hollowed out institution now.

In 2024, IBM sold the weather stuff to private equity firm Francisco Partners.

At this point I'm thinking we'll be lucky if our old weather maps and servers stay up to the end of this year.

My answer is it all depends on the sun. One Lego piece is all of mankind's energy output in a year. You can double it if you worry about carbon dioxide. (Which means they do not know half of Lovelock's hypothesis.)

Now compare that to the 650 million lego bits we get from the sun in the same amount of time. Insignificant compared to the sun.

199 194 After WW2, some Buckley Class (IIRC) DEs were beached in some remote locations as ready made power stations. Maybe, when smaller nuke ships reach end of viable service they could be used for that purpose in coastal areas.

202 Good morning, dawn people.

It's 4:30 here and the water choppers are making a circuit overhead. I'm at the eastern edge of the Eaton fire in the foothills. The fire crews have kept the this edge in check for about 24 hours and we've had zero wind for almost 36 hours, ehich has helped. We've also had no power for almost 48 hours, but it's slowly coming back across our my city.

We had been about 100 yards from the mandatory evacuation zone, but they lifted that for the blocks above us last night. We also received multiple evac orders on our phones last night that turned out to be for other cities, miles away. That was fun. Still, we're packed and ready to bug out if we have to.

207 IIRC only submarines and carriers are nuclear these days, right?

Maybe someone could diagram out how a small, modular reactor would work, if it were to be implemented domestically.

Reactor --> steam --> turbine --> magic --> electricity?

Agreed but you need something to compare size - say a yardstick?
I'm thinking our old DG Eclipse and its replacement the MV8000 as examples. The latter was about the size of a large kitchen fridge.
