Overnight Open Thread - Toein' The Line [scampydog]

Hoar Frost and Rime Ice.

Hoar Rime.jpg

Good evening, Horde. The ONT Rebel Edition sounded great, but Rocky Burnette got in the way.

WoooHooo! Less than a week until Inauguration Day! It has been a long four years. What celebratory plans does the Horde have? Pop up MoMe? Annoy a barista or a school board member? Cheers!

A classic from Trump's first inauguration.

SlickWilly Inaug.JPG

It never gets old knowing that Hillary, The Diabolist, will NEVER be president. Slick and his cares ran out of Hillary (you know what's to give) a long time ago.

*****

A fair amount of blog chatter about the education system. A look back at the old ways. No Rocky Burnette. Yet.

Former Charleston area student school bus drivers reflect on teenage years behind the big wheel.

South Carolina was one of only three states-- including North Carolina and Alabama -- that still employed student drivers, according to archives. At the time, 20 percent of the Palmetto State's 6,000 bus drivers were 17-year-olds, according to the release.

A bit of head tilting and fun with headlines. Alright, Horde, hit it with your memorable headlines.

"Obama Wins" The Washington Post, November 5, 2008 That is more of a horror movie title. Also worse than Rocky Burnette and his band wearing those sweet, satin, ABBA costumes.

193 And this week's winner for Bad Headline Writing goes to the New York Post

The New York Post is not eligible for that award. They have a lifetime pass thanks to "Headless Body in Topless Bar" Posted by: Chuck C

How about this one: Capone Pulls Off Last Robbery - Of Viewers. Daily News, Kay Gardella. Anything that temporarily crushes Jerry Rivera's self-admiration brings the excitement.

Going beyond basic understanding of declination for compass navigation, but an easy read.

"Magnetic north has been moving slowly around Canada since the 1500s but, in the past 20 years, it accelerated towards Siberia, increasing in speed every year until about five years ago, when it suddenly decelerated from 50 to 35 kilometers [31 to 22 miles] per year, which is the biggest deceleration in speed we've ever seen."

Magnetic North. It is moving, but not like a speed popping trombone player in a Rocky Burnette video.

Mystery click. Not AOC.

Today is Feast of the Ass Day. No, it is not what the headline suggests.

The Feast of the Ass on January 14 began as a medieval Christian feast, and commemorates the Israelites' flight into Egypt. It was predominantly observed in France as a variant of the Feast of Fools, which commemorated biblical donkey-related narratives, particularly the donkey that carried the Holy Family into Egypt following Jesus' birth.

Fun, feel good story.

Major Meredith went on to attest that the birds could take several bullets without batting an eyelash. In fact, one bird was hit by a truck some days after the initial shooting. The truck killed it, but when the emu was examined they found five bullets in it.

Every time you get a pizza delivery, you should thank this inventor. Patent pictures about halfway down the article.

The thingy, though, isn’t just for decoration. Like all great inventions, it was a marvel of brilliant thought hiding in plain sight. Simple, easy to construct, and absolutely necessary, the "pizza saver" (also known as a "package saver," "pizza stack," "box tent," and "pizza nipple," among other names) was the brainchild of a Carmela Vitale, a 46-year-old woman living in Dix Hills, New York on Long Island.

*****

Before we get to Rocky's masterpiece, his father, Johnny Burnett (this video has been linked here previously, but damnit...I'm riffing and it fits the storyline) had a song that peaked at #8 on the Hot Billboard 100, and #3 in the UK. Ringo covered it and it went to #1.

It is Rocky Burnette time! Attention span initium to finis. Satin, trombone, fire truck, hair throwing, leg kicks, a Captain Kangaroo jacket, and a smoke machine...no Mata Hari pinball machine, however. What will be seen...cannot be unseen. When I think of the word transitory, this video is that time in musical history. The period between the late 70s and very early 80s. Released in 1979 in the UK and 1980 in the USA. Peaked at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 list and #1 in the land of kangaroos, poisonous everything, and Vegemite, in 1980.

Baby, I'm Tired of Toein' The Line.

I still have the 45, judge as you may.

This guy was kicked out of the Chateau Marmont. He was there the night John Belushi OD'd and also trashed his room during his own drug-fueled bender, but did like it when a long-legged lovely walked by.

This ONT is posted with a nod to Johnny and Rocky Burnette. Their music lives on. Donations for the Rocky Burnette Museum of Awesomeness can be made here. I'm certainly not confident enough to wager, but I'm inclined to say they won't. It's accepted that Trump won the popular vote, and they don't want to risk being painted as anti-democratic. (Which of course they are, but it's about perception, not reality.)

95 There was a drive-in restaurant here in Alaska back in the day that had two live lions on display.

Sometimes they'd load them in the back of a convertible and cruise "The Strip" (the local teen cruising spot, back when teens cruised rather than sitting on their asses playing video games).

Personally, I don't think I could concentrate on driving with two lions in the back seat.

177 The Post Office is insane.

I’ve never seen it as bad as you describe, but I get a lot of packages due to my various book addictions, and I see lesser variations of this all the time. Packages circling through the major cities around where I live before settling down in Austin and making its way up here. Items arriving in one stopover before they’ve left the previous stopover. Items leaving the same stopover twice.

It’s also “funny” how their computer seems to think that just because it’s arrived in Austin it can update the arrival date. Had one last week go from Austin to some unincorporated town forty miles away I’d never heard of, sit there a couple of days, then go back to Austin before heading up here.

Doukhobors were a Russian Orthodox sect; got driven out of Russia late 19th Century. Many went to western Canada. some to Uruguay, too, IIRC. Sort of like Amish or Hutterites; lived communally in huge houses, and farmed. Sons of Freedom were a splinter group, sort of like the Sovereign Citizen crowd. They did not want to pay taxes, or serve in the military, or send their kids to government schools. They did not practice violence against people, but did destroy property. And did nude parading. The women, you did not want to see nude parading.

232 Supposedly 10k homes have been burned. Who knows if that’s anywhere near accurate but let’s say it is. And let’s say it will cost on average $2m to rebuild. But wait a second some of those homes cost $20M or more you may say. Sure. But $18M of that is the value of land. Land doesn’t have to be rebuilt. $2M in just building costs gets a very nice home.

So the total cost is $20B. Nowhere near the hundred of billions number floating out there.

Miley's house here is aligned pretty well with the front of the house facing south. That was entirely an accident. When we were laying out the rough corners, with stakes and string, I just eyeballed what looked "about right", how I wanted it. I wasn't even thinking about direction alignment.

But it came out almost perfect. Entirely by accident. Or maybe my sense of "about right" is somehow "one with the earth" or something.

Air lifted to a major medical center where they were able to remove the nail and the dude walked out 4 days later no worse for wear.

There was a guy around here, ran a local hardware store. He had just got married, and was building a house. They had put a window in the wrong spot while framing it in, and he said, hell, I just move it myself, simple enough.

There was a nail gun left around (back then, you could leave your tools on a job site without worry. Well out in the country around here).

He ended up nailing his left hand to a stud using the nailgun. Not thinking he was holding a piece of 2x4 with his left hand, and didn't realize the nail was long enough that it would come through and hit his hand.

In the central coast area a new subdivision with small houses, built on flat land, (not in coastal district) houses were selling for 950k. You have to spend a big chunk of change just to get permits. 373 Liberalism, as the great Tom Sowell oberved, is replacing what works, with what sounds good.

Groceries used to be supplied in sturdy, brown paper sacks, as God intended. There were no “extra” charges involved, due to the now genius expedient of simply rolling those costs into the price of the groceries themselves. Elegant, that.

Then the lunatics decided to mount a propaganda campaign that too many Redwoods were being slaughtered to make toothpicks and we were all browbeat and guilt tripped into those execrable plastic bags.

Then it got worse. But I’m not bitter. When I get online ordering, they send me a separate text informing me there may be “state bag restrictions” and no, you won’t be getting any unless you opt-in, possibly at extra charge. This can’t be done on the app, ya gotta login somewhere else. Of course I want fucking shopping bags. Asshoes

A) What law gives him the authority to confiscate citizens' property when no crime has been committed?

2) Even if there is a law, he's playing politics with other peoples' lives. He needs to be arrested, charged, put on trial, and hanged..... possibly in that order.

Reading one line in that article about state funding. Some fire stations/equipment were being funded by some state program, which gives them control over the equipment.

401 Isn’t it a Federal crime to interfere with official emergency communications in a disaster? I can hear it now. .. “Who so ever .. blah blah blah, up to $10,000 and 5 years in jail.” Do it.

Sometimes the right people just happen to be in the “wrong” place. Jim Lovell had a lot of time in space and was an Ace navigator. On 8 he got fat thumb and dumped the platform and had to re-align the whole thing. This was while the commander, Frank Borman, was asleep. He left a note for him informing him of same. I bet he blew a gasket when he woke up. LOL “you did what!?”

But on 13 he was the guy you want. Fred Haise was possibly the most knowledgeable person on the planet, er off the planet too, on the Lunar Module, where they had to use as a lifeboat to get back home.

They actually powered down the whole command module. It was never envisioned that it would be turned off. Everything frozen or wet, they never had turned one back on either. A checklist had to be figured out in real time. One of the improvements after the Apollo 1 fire was sealed wiring connector terminations, if they hadn’t improved that, when they powered back up with all the condensation it would have horked

404 One of the concerns was the gyroscopes- they weren’t supposed to be shut down. And exposed to the freezing cold of outer space. What happens after a few days? Will it spool back up? Sure hope so. Will it work? Well who knows. Let’s ask the manufacturer. They weren’t sure.

But in discussions, a worker revealed that he had left one of the test units in production in the back of his station wagon over a long weekend in freezing temps and it worked fine. This kind of communication made the teams back at NASA confident that wasn’t too much of a factor to worry about.

406 Portland OR is another town with magnetic vs geographic north plat anomalies. The original plat of downtown was done to mag north. When Captain Couch ( who was a real sea captain and knew the difference) platted the expansion to the north, He did it right, which is why the downtown grid to the south of Burnside is to magnetic north and all the streets to the north run true n-s and e-w.

Posted by: buddhaha at January 15, 2025 02:43 AM (+XvTL)

407
Reading the temp in the Apollo 13 command module only got down to 38F. That was enough to get condensation. The LM stayed around 50F.

The problem in space is mostly heat that has to be shed, and not cooling. They had designed the spacecraft to be an efficient radiator, for all the internal heat. On power down, that worked against them.

That was sarcasm.

413 Good morning, insomaniacals! 'Tis 51 F., wind chill of 48, winds only about 7 mph, cloudy but not (I hope) raining). Workout weather. Much as I'd rather stay here and sip coffee, it's workout weather.

I dreamed some colorful dreams last night, but all I recall is pulling into a self-service car wash bay and preparing to change my car's oil (which the management would frown on), but discovering just before I undid the pan plug that I had no basin to catch the oil in. So I had to postpone the change. Also something was bouncing around my mind just as the alarm went off, something about "a gay silverfish." No idea what *that* was connected to.

I'd forgotten about Rocky Burnette -- not the "Toein' the Line" song, but his name and the fact he was Johnny's son. Sometimes I think it was better when artists just performed their songs on TV variety shows, and didn't do weird videos.

416 I am going to have to start looking in here and considering posting a little bit earlier ever day or week or so.

417 Oh, sure, it'll be just fine. Because, you know, it's *just like* the freezing temps of Outer Space.

Nobody claimed it was “just like”, but it was a data point they didn’t have before.I mentioned it mainly because of the remarkably close working relationship they had between industry and contractors and subcontractors. One guy thought about the problem, and said “hey, I remember something that might be important….”

Make sense?
