The meeting is expected to draw between 80 to 100 attendees from IFCN's network of fact-checkers, which spans 170 organizations worldwide. Not all of the attendees are Meta fact-checking partners, although many of them have a stake in the program's future and its global implications.FaceBook and Google definitely are paying most of the salaries of these censors. When the left and then the Obama and Biden Administrations demanded censorship, FaceBook and Google wanted to provide it for them. But they wanted to do so with plausible deniability. So they began paying outlets to take on fact-checkers whose salaries were paid by FaceBook and Google (if my understanding of this is correct). In return, outlets who agreed to prop up the new censorship regime, like Bill Kristol's Weekly Standard, would gain favorable treatment from FaceBook's algorithm. Then FaceBook and Google would take the "fact"-checks provided for by the "fact"-checkers whose salaries they were paying and use them as a basis to censor speech -- claiming that "third party independent fact-checkers" had ruled this speech as false or "hateful." I'm sure they also paid millions and millions to Politi-"Fact" and other "fact" check organizations.
So yes, FaceBook deciding to pull the plug is a very real threat to these censors' ability to play censor. At least, more of them will have to go back to just demanding censorship freelance on Twitter. Politi-"Fact" whines that it's not true they engaged in censorship -- all they did, after all, was provide extremely partisan fake fact checks labeling any speech they disagreed with "false" or "hateful" and then FaceBook would ban it. We didn't ban anything, they cry! We only provided the "independent" pretext for censorship that all the left was demanding, and we continued labeling all conservative speech as "disinformation" and "hatespeech" once we saw all of this speech being censored! This as led to the most astonishing NYT headline in years: "Fact"-checkers rule criticism against them for being "too partisan" to be false.

That hits close to home right now. A very dear friend of longstanding (back to grad school) who was formerly conservative has now gone fully leftard (perhaps in part because of his leftard wife, who's a bit of a Bea Arthuresque harpy, IMO).
He/they are big fans of Newsom, fret over "climate change," which they think causes wildfires, and fret even more over Covid, and they make their views explicit even when inappropriate.
I'm reluctant to get in touch with him, because while I can maintain and avoid politics, I don't think he can, and I'm not in the mood for a leftist diatribe.

Re Greenland. See "Camp Century" a Cold War relic we built there.
It had a nuclear reactor for a power source, as was supposed to be some nuclear missile base. The ice sheet wasn't as stable as the experts thought at the time, and it had to be abandoned.

They came onto my radar in 2020 as all the news were saying that claims precincts in Atlanta counted ballots after observers were kicked out was debunked or false.
And I was like, "we all saw it with our own eyes!"
So I followed the hyperlinks* which was a maze of one paper citing to the next finally ending in ... Raw Story.
And their sole proof it was false? Election officials in the precincts said that didn't happen.
That was it--one little nobody outfit was enough for everyone in the media.
Yes, they were funded by Facebook.
*That was still a holdover from the early days of the internet, when you'd better cite your sources. Now, if you check, all the hyperlinks are irrelevant; cites to unrelated stories, ads or, mockingly, definition of the word.

But if they were correct, why have fact-checkers? To cover for them.
My father's a fossilized liberal who used to be a copy editor for a zillion years and one of the reasons we no longer bother with politics is that I keep pointing out to him that no one is ever fired for getting the story wrong. So long as they lie the right way, their job is safe.
He's old enough to remember that botching a story meant instant termination. That was why media was trusted.

I simply don't take it on faith that back in the old days, "they" got things right because there were ramifications. They got things right because there weren't enough alternate eyes to critique that which was presented. The absence of wide scrutiny did not mean the absence of still getting most things wrong. We were simply, collectively ignorant.
It's a different age where we can more readily spot the warts, but the warts were always there and TPTB actually cultured the warts if it worked to their advantage and self-preservation.

Similarly, we also know not to build a house backing immediately onto a canyon. A very close friend (from MA) bought a house that is maybe 15' from a canyon. Never mind that that is a habitat for coyotes and rattlesnakes. That's the least of it. The canyon is full of highly flammable mesquite, and when we get a Santa Ana condition (very hot, very dry air blowing from the desert toward the sea) the Santa Ana winds howl through the canyons (which typically run E-W). Now all it takes is a spark, or a vagrant building a camp fire, and canyon becomes an raging inferno.

I gotta disagree. Liberty is inextricably linked to property rights. If they are respected, the state has to beg its citizens for money. Richard Pipes had great book, Property and Freedom, comparing England and Russia on this.
And on religion, England was far more tolerant than most. I can't think of a country that was more tolerant by the 1700s.

Fun fact: the Brits USED to use "z" in spelling such words, but then for some reason switched to "s" spellings. Kinda stupid, if you ask me. The "s" sound gained more aspects, at the expense of the letter that used to take up the "zzz" sound.

They also changed their accent. What is now Received Pronunciation dates back to late-ish Victorian times, and is derived from the Home Counties accent.
The American accent (and the Canadian, which is pretty much identical) were the original accents of English colonists, and didn't change much. Shakespeare's English was not identical to the North American accent, but was much closer to it than the Received Pronunciation, which interestingly is rather reminiscent of the Southern accent in America (for example, soft "r's" instead of the retroflexed "r" of the standard American accent).
