Donald Trump's Former Employer McDonald's Announces Walkback of DEI Practices

Not a complete abandonment, but a reduction.

McDonald's is the latest US corporation -- and among the largest -- to back off some of its diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) practices, as a Supreme Court ruling against affirmative action and conservative backlash to those programs continues to lead businesses to reevaluate their diversity pledges.
The company in a statement Monday said it is sunsetting its specific diversity goals, including requiring its suppliers to commit to certain DEI targets. And it will stop participating in external surveys that measure corporate diversity.
McDonald's is also changing the name of its diversity team to the Global Inclusion Team -- a common practice for many other companies that have rolled back diversity pledges.

Name-changing isn't going to fool us.

"This name change is more fitting for McDonald's in light of our inclusion value and better aligns with this team's work," McDonald's said in the statement.
But the company said it has not abandoned its mission to maintain a diverse workforce. Instead, McDonald said that it will continue to support practices that foster inclusion in the workplace and across its operations, and it will work with its suppliers and vendors to discuss diversity and inclusion practices.

The company said its new position was driven by a recent Supreme Court ruling against affirmative action and other corporations reevaluating their diversity initiatives. Online pressure, legal threats and customer opposition have led many companies, including Walmart, Ford, Harley-Davidson, John Deere and others to make changes to their DEI initiatives.
But some observers say that many high-profile corporate moves on DEI aren't as large a change as they might seem.
"DEI isn't going away. It's just changing," J. Danielle Carr, chief officer of inclusion at Lowenstein Sandler and president of the Association of Law Firm Diversity Professionals, told CNN in December. The organization found that just 14 of the Fortune 500 companies made any public changes to their DEI teams or programs in 2024.

Costco remains all-in on DEI:

Meanwhile, Costco recently acknowledged that the benefits of its DEI policies proved too rewarding to back down, despite backlash from activist shareholders aiming to end the company's ambitions.

So far, so good - had 4th chemo treatment yesterday, and whatever they are giving me to curb nausea is working like gangbusters! Mostly just tired for a couple of days afterward. Having a CT scan done next week due to some pain which may just be muscle aches from the chemo meds.

Other than that, I am hanging in there! Started work on another stocking - I told the girls that there are 4 more designs that I want to finish, but they will need to step up the work of making more grandkids so that these will all have names attached to them 😂😂😂

From what I understand, you can't. Part of the recycling process for cardboard involves immersing it in water (to break down the cellulose, I think), but, since grease and water don't mix, it won't work on a greasy box.

Costco has always been a very, very liberal company. In many ways it was the anti-Walmart, whose founder was quite conservative. Sol Price, the godfather of the entire industry, was a big lib, and Costco co-founder Jim Sinegal, who learned everything about the discount business from Price, was a big Obama/Biden supporter. Costco is, by far, the best company of its kind in the retail sector. It's too good to boycott, and they know it. They'll know how far to take DEI before they turn off significant numbers of their members.

Agreed. I don't know if the food changed, or my tolerance for it changed, but I cannot eat McDonalds and similar food now.

My stomach is fine, but overall I feel sluggish and gross in a way no other food makes me feel. I don't know if it's the oil they use to fry things, or the salt, or what -- but ... that's not normal.

The nice thing that Trump has going for him is that the black letter of the law, US Civil Rights of 1964 among others, forbids that sort of discrimination even to benefit 'underrepresented groups'. The Brits at least are more forward with it calling racial and ethnic preferences in hiring as Positive Discrimination instead of the US labeled and deceptive Affirmative Action.

From what I heard, it became a crusade by vegans and from some hindus (beef is verboten to them). Enraged and engaged minorities can effectively veto what other people eat via private and public pressure such as laws and regulations. Same as for cage free eggs, confinement practices on pork, etc.

Businesses prefer to use one standard so if one ingredient or source pisses of a group of customers then it makes sense for a mass marketer to cater to the edge choice.

I dislike cooking with corn oil or canola--canola gives a bitter taste to me on fried foods and never cared for corn oil.

Peanut oil is preferred by me for wok cooking and in the rare occasion of deep frying.

265 FWIW, Waffle House, and its lesser cousin Huddle House, are both diner style chains that use a griddle to do their cooking and thus it is NOT low fat style cooking or one for people with particular fine dining tastes. Want a waffle, hot coffee, breakfast, or a burger, it can do it. Go somewhere else if you want ethnic specialties or dislike grease.

Often though, they are affordable, open, and apart from the stupid You Tube videos, relatively safe places to pull off the road during travel. Late at night and near major urban areas, you get a rougher clientele sometimes looking for a fight.

Arby's used to have a great 5 for $5 deal on their roast beef sandwiches. Guess what inflation has robbed us of? Way too much expensive now if I don't have a coupon. And out of curiosity, I've tried their seasonal sandwiches , and they are stellar. Their fish filet was the best fast food one I've ever had.

278 I went to Costco twice a month when my boys were at home. I was also feeding their friends, so a Costco lasagna, two Cesar salads and two loaves of bread were a snack.

I still go every now and again. The beef is good and less expensive than the regular grocery store. My laundry detergent and paper products and coffee are significantly less expensive. The freezer section is pretty amazing. And I find socks and tee shirts for a good deal.

Oh, and the cheap rotisserie chicken will feed me and Lucy for a week.

288 Serious question: do you think China and the CCP/modern Han dynasty domination isn't a threat to Taiwan? Do you think we should not read the signs of everything happening in that region, and be proactive, not reactive, in shaping world events? Because Obama's "lead from behind" crap in leading our military just made it worse. If securing Greenland through a fair deal between us and Denmark is possible, why not?

Well according to China AND the US, we have agreed that China and Taiwan are part of the same country decades ago. This undercuts any justification for trying to break them apart now. There's plenty China can do to make Taiwan's life difficult short of war and much of Taiwan's trade goes to China.

Even back in WWII it was obvious that having the North Atlantic covered by weak powers was unsupportable. Even before the US entered the war the US had taken over defense of Canada on the East Coast and West Coast. We grabbed bases in Iceland and Greenland I think too. The Danes can't defend that area, they've abdicated their independence to the EU.
