"All Hell Will Break Loose" if Hamas Doesn't Release Hostages by His Inauguration
To be more exact, he said, no, before he takes office. Not before the inauguration. To those of us who always take him at his word, that's an interesting one. Posted by: t-bird at January 07, 2025 01:18 PM (OqC0L) 7

I assume a lot of the stuff he's floating is just his version of "stray voltage". Still, it seems kind of stupid to go about unnecessarily alienating places like Denmark. He almost sounds a bit unhinged.

It’s because Greenland gives Denmark a large amount of drilling rights in the arctic, which they can’t effectively exploit economically or defend militarily because they’re a small country. From what I understand anyways.

Did Greenland signal some overture that Trump is just following through on? The good part of trump is that he's always negotiating with these countries, I just can't see what he's actually trying to get at with Greenland unless they would like a closer relationship with the US. As in territory status. Who knows. Jr is traveling there two weeks before the inauguration so something is up.

A strike on Iran's nuke program seems much more certain than it ever has right now. IAEA itself has thrown in the towel, saying the program is now beyond the stage where limits/inspections matter. And of course constant leaks from various guvamints about the program being close to producing a device*.
And of course conditions are more propitious for a strike than ever. Syrian corridor is open for IAF. Iranian air defense severely degraded. Iran's insurance policy (Hezbollah/massive rocket attacks on Israel) taken off the board. And the Trumpenfuhrer returning to power. * of course haven't seen the intel itself but weaponizing a device into a bomb, and mating it with a ballistic missile (Iran's only practical option for delivery system), are non-trivial exercises and I wonder how capable Iran is in those key areas, at the moment Posted by: rhomboid at January 07, 2025 01:26 PM (1m82a) 87

For instance Ontario becomes a state, then Washington is split into two and the eastern side of the state becomes its own deep red state to offset the deep blue Ontario. BC joins, NY is split into two states with NYC as a new state and old NY state instantly becoming deep red to offset deep blue BC. And so on.

Posted by: Common Tater ========== Jefferson had authorization by Congress to try to buy New Orleans as a port. Napoleon in one of his mercurial decisions offered to sell all of it. Jefferson could have convened Congress but feared what the English (engaged in a war with France) might do to forestall it or Napoleon might withdraw the offer just as suddenly. So he essentially wrote a hot check on the Treasury (not legally authorized) for the whole thing and asked for Congressional approval after the fact. He got it because fait accompli making it hard for Congress to vote it down as a national embarrassment and even a lot of New Englanders ended up approving it because it removed French influence (which they regarded as pernicious) on the American frontier and its politics. The quip about "Gulf of America" was probably more about tweaking Mexico and their role in the illegals being moved into the US than anything else.
Greenland is all about rare earth metals and minerals that China currently has a monopoly on. National security too. Keeps Russia honest, to a point. And the Arctic is an important region for trade and resources anyway. He did riff at length about the Panama Canal. That one I think he's got the bit between his teeth on. He'll make a play for it. The resistance from his own government will be significantly more than what Panama or China (who's "managing" the canal now) will put up. His comments about *biden's EO's and the recent bans on drilling tell me he's a bit pissed off about having to deal with all that. He also went into some length about the lawfare against him. I just hope he's pissed off enough to get some retribution this time. Posted by: Martini Farmer at January 07, 2025 01:39 PM (Q4IgG) 192
Re Greenland, Trump made noises about annexing the place in his last term. I've actually been in Greenland (if only briefly) when my unit was on our way back from Reforger1982 when our C141 aircraft had an emergency hydraulics problem, and we had to switch planes there. Wherever we were in Greenland was so top secret we were ordered to look straight ahead at the man in front of us when disembarking and then embarking onto our new ride. We were told it would be a court martial offense if we let our eyes wander onto stuff we weren't authorized to see. So yeah, THAT top secret.
We apparently have extremely valuable assets on that land mass and (my guess) Trump doesn't like those assets being (technically at least) on foreign soil. Posted by: troyriser at January 07, 2025 01:40 PM (DPeYO) 193

159 If Canuck provinces were to join we’d need a 1:1 breakup of American states. For instance Ontario becomes a state, then Washington is split into two and the eastern side of the state becomes its own deep red state to offset the deep blue Ontario. BC joins, NY is split into two states with NYC as a new state and old NY state instantly becoming deep red to offset deep blue BC. And so on.
Posted by: Its Go Time Donald ========== States have to approve being split up with the possible exception of Texas who entered the US under treaty with its own power to subdivide into several states itself. Offhand, I can recall Georgia, for example, ceding its western territory to the US govt to form Alabama and Mississippi. Mass agreed to separate from Maine. WV is the exception of state approval to split as Lincoln held that VA could not justly contest WV split as it had literally left the union at the time. The “watermelons” have made Rare Earth and Strategic Minerals mining practically impossible in America. We don’t have a huge supply, but there are significant deposits. They are simply off limits.
That is why Chyna controls the supply. Our betters have worked tirelessly for decades to hobble or cripple our industries and kneecap critical infrastructure and national defense. This is intentional and has nothing to do with “protecting our natural resources”. It’s more or less the Morgenthau Plan, near as anyone can tell. I suspect they have been pledging federal lands as a kind of collateral for quite some time. All of our energy problems are completely self-inflicted, it is absolutely criminal what they have done, never mind what they are trying to do. This is a little bit like walking up to a house and knocking on the door and asking the owner if they're willing to sell. China wants to mine in Greenland. The way China mines is to use all Chinese labor and with heavy Chinese investment in ports, etc. and they turn it into a military base.
Denmark is going to screw that up. They want no mining because they are Euroweenies. Posted by: TheJamesMadison Wasn't necessary. Congress already had authorized buying property in the past and that included authorizing buying the port of Louisiana. Jefferson's qualms were over the necessary and proper battle that he lost during the Washington Administration with Hamilton (re the First Bank of the US). But Jefferson rejected going to Congress because of expediency, dispatch, and on the principle it is better to ask forgiveness than permission. Rightly so, it was probably Jefferson's best decisions of his presidency along with fighting the Barbary pirates and Lewis and Clark expedition. Most of the rest of it was trivial and even harmful. Jefferson's crackpot idea of gunboats and tweaking the British along with neglect of the Adams built Navy and the Army bequeathed to him by the Federalists. Madison ended up paying the price for those decisions as well as the ill advised War of 1812. Madison, unlike Jefferson, was unable to separate his pragmatism from his perceived constitutional role in his first term but did so in term 2. Denmark can't defend the Faroe Islands and Greenland. The Brits are unwilling to invest in a blue water navy, two 1/3 capable Nimitz-class carriers notwithstanding. The rest of NATO's maritime defense forces?
And that's not including Canada's remarkably extensive coastline and its joke of a navy. It has small, old ships, UK cast-off subs, and the Canucks lease their C-17s from us anyway. What DJT is doing is spitting out the cold, hard truth to our putative allies: You don't have chips on the table, you're begging for us to start WWIII in Ukraine and contributing nothing in return. t's very inside baseball but it will be the biggest decision of the last 100 years:
Thomas has been itching for decades for a case to over-turn the Slaughterhouse decision. That shitty decision made any economic regulation by government legal. And eliminated your right to earn a living, which he sees as a "privilege" protected under the 14th. Posted by: People's Hippo Voice ====== Slaughterhouse was an egregious decision but unfortunately applied by later courts to eviscerate the privileges and immunities clause of both the 14th applied to states and the US Constitution itself applying to the federal government. Those words mean something, which Scotus has mumbling applied to something like travel but not to fundamental rights. The Court itself bent itself into a pretzel over the 14th by denying the plain meaning of the section in a number of segregation era decisions. Then it tacked on some of the protections via the idiotic incorporation doctrine of due process. But only the ones that the court favored, not the disfavored privileges and immunities. The original language was intended to codify existing common law protections that had been applied in the colonies and early US Posted by: whig at January 07, 2025 02:15 PM (ctrM5) 435

"I don't know why we'd want Greenland..."
Ace is being obtuse here. He seems to have forgotten that Xi tried to take over Greenland in 2019 by paying its territorial governor ~$50k to allow China to set up mines and military bases there. Right now there is no agreement between DK and “Greenland” as to who owns the place. The “Greenland belongs to Greenlanders” nonsense is particularly arch, since the majority Inuit are interlopers (Greenland was uninhabited when E.T. Red discovered it). This situation makes Greenland look to the world like Terra Nullis. From a US perspective, Greenland in its current state is an attractive nuisance at best, and a strategic nightmare at worst (think Cuba with Chinese missiles). A US takeover would solve a lot of problems. We need to stop acting as if we are moral people and will fight moral wars and that surely the Chinese are humans too. ("the Russians love their children too...") Justifying denouncing the Japanese is no different from tearing down civil war statues. Or founding fathers. It does two harms, first it creates a false idea that the world can be utopia if we denounce the past enough, and second it justifies what China plans as revenge. Let's forget Japan. But there's already a Gulf of America! It's the North Atlantic!
The US may have been too clever by half, diplomatically, when they colored-up the revolution that created Panama. Short run, brilliant, but we were seldom known as enlightened colonial administrators (you might make an exception for WH Taft, who may not have looked the Man of Action but did get a lot done in Manila despite the State Dept). The CZ was treated as a burden, other than the ditch itself. Without saying much, the US made quite an investment in surveying and planning improvements, but they kept getting pushed back because of the pie/sky atomic dream of a sea-level canal in Nicaragua to replace it and make it obsolete. We don't talk about it, but there was a generation-long world shipping depression that kept the profit outlook down, and air freight was taking over everything, before China became the world's workshop. If we make a major play to make Panama matter, someone (guess who?) will start to see The Other Canal as a good investment. Lord knows, we don't treat our seaports and shipping industry as if we are a sea-faring nation anymore. Posted by: Way,Way Downriver at January 07, 2025 04:38 PM (zdLoL) 527
Don't we have a military base on Greenland, not unlike Russia's having a military base in The Crimea? Then there are the natural resources. Of course, if China wants it, it's important to make sure China doesn't get it.
