Jefferson had authorization by Congress to try to buy New Orleans as a port. Napoleon in one of his mercurial decisions offered to sell all of it. Jefferson could have convened Congress but feared what the English (engaged in a war with France) might do to forestall it or Napoleon might withdraw the offer just as suddenly.
So he essentially wrote a hot check on the Treasury (not legally authorized) for the whole thing and asked for Congressional approval after the fact.
He got it because fait accompli making it hard for Congress to vote it down as a national embarrassment and even a lot of New Englanders ended up approving it because it removed French influence (which they regarded as pernicious) on the American frontier and its politics.

Greenland is all about rare earth metals and minerals that China currently has a monopoly on. National security too. Keeps Russia honest, to a point. And the Arctic is an important region for trade and resources anyway.
He did riff at length about the Panama Canal. That one I think he's got the bit between his teeth on. He'll make a play for it. The resistance from his own government will be significantly more than what Panama or China (who's "managing" the canal now) will put up.
His comments about *biden's EO's and the recent bans on drilling tell me he's a bit pissed off about having to deal with all that. He also went into some length about the lawfare against him. I just hope he's pissed off enough to get some retribution this time.

States have to approve being split up with the possible exception of Texas who entered the US under treaty with its own power to subdivide into several states itself. Offhand, I can recall Georgia, for example, ceding its western territory to the US govt to form Alabama and Mississippi. Mass agreed to separate from Maine. WV is the exception of state approval to split as Lincoln held that VA could not justly contest WV split as it had literally left the union at the time.

We elect a president to do the entire job not just the parts that are shiny. We cannot allow China to dominate the oceans anymore than we can allow them to continue conquering territory throughout the world on land.

Slaughterhouse was an egregious decision but unfortunately applied by later courts to eviscerate the privileges and immunities clause of both the 14th applied to states and the US Constitution itself applying to the federal government.
Those words mean something, which Scotus has mumbling applied to something like travel but not to fundamental rights. The Court itself bent itself into a pretzel over the 14th by denying the plain meaning of the section in a number of segregation era decisions. Then it tacked on some of the protections via the idiotic incorporation doctrine of due process. But only the ones that the court favored, not the disfavored privileges and immunities.

I'm not defending modern China, I'm simply saying Japan has a lot for which they have not taken responsibility, and renaming the Sea of Japan is just a relatively cost-free way of reminding them of that. Japan is currently one of our closest allies, and so I would consider nothing more serious than that.

Ace is being obtuse here. He seems to have forgotten that Xi tried to take over Greenland in 2019 by paying its territorial governor ~$50k to allow China to set up mines and military bases there.
Right now there is no agreement between DK and “Greenland” as to who owns the place. The “Greenland belongs to Greenlanders” nonsense is particularly arch, since the majority Inuit are interlopers (Greenland was uninhabited when E.T. Red discovered it).
This situation makes Greenland look to the world like Terra Nullis. From a US perspective, Greenland in its current state is an attractive nuisance at best, and a strategic nightmare at worst (think Cuba with Chinese missiles). A US takeover would solve a lot of problems.

You see, this is the problem. Japan has apologized. They expressed great regret and said their actions were wrong. Many times. They did it in Asian terms (subtly) and in Western terms (clearly.)
It is never good enough because China has great interest in playing the victim and making everyone think the Japs killed all those people instead of the CCP.
But more important, Japan accepted it's subordinate role to the USA, accepted the loss of territory to Russia, accepted that it had to follow USA's guidance and rules of trade. It spent money on foreign aid and since the war has been nothing short of contrite.

Wong Kim Ark dealt with a child of legal residents at the time not being allowed back into the US after a trip abroad. Not to illegals who are present here not under the jurisdiction of the US nor to sojourners, travelers, foreign diplomats, etc.
The 14th amendment discussions in Congress are right there to be consulted.

Justifying denouncing the Japanese is no different from tearing down civil war statues. Or founding fathers. It does two harms, first it creates a false idea that the world can be utopia if we denounce the past enough, and second it justifies what China plans as revenge.
Let's forget Japan. Was England wrong to fight the opium war? should UK be denounced? Does that justify China flooding the West with Fentanyl? They think it does.

The US may have been too clever by half, diplomatically, when they colored-up the revolution that created Panama. Short run, brilliant, but we were seldom known as enlightened colonial administrators (you might make an exception for WH Taft, who may not have looked the Man of Action but did get a lot done in Manila despite the State Dept). The CZ was treated as a burden, other than the ditch itself.
Without saying much, the US made quite an investment in surveying and planning improvements, but they kept getting pushed back because of the pie/sky atomic dream of a sea-level canal in Nicaragua to replace it and make it obsolete.
We don't talk about it, but there was a generation-long world shipping depression that kept the profit outlook down, and air freight was taking over everything, before China became the world's workshop. If we make a major play to make Panama matter, someone (guess who?) will start to see The Other Canal as a good investment. Lord knows, we don't treat our seaports and shipping industry as if we are a sea-faring nation anymore.
