Logging sled. My dad worked in the northern Adirondacks woods cutting timber for a logging outfit, after finishing two years of engineering school. He and his younger bro were on a 2-2-2 program, you go to school I work, then reverse.
Dad was in the first winter of his middle two years. This was during the middle 30s with the depression in full howl. Somewhere in our family archives is a black and white photo of dad in front of a team hauling a full sled of white pine logs, deep snow all around. It was foggy here last weekend, and I was commenting to Mrs Speck how it must be a difficult thing for artists to grasp the palette of their subject under such conditions -- fog, low light, snow. Everything is muted and sometimes changed entirely, and really painting what you're seeing rather than the default choices must take discipline.
This piece is no different. Other than the yellow, it's almost grayscale. But it renders in the mind as environmentally muted. Beautifully done. Posted by: red speck at January 06, 2025 09:39 AM (0Id0S) 46

Well, this is appropriate for today's weather.
Remington really caught the feel of the blowing snow and cold with the darkness. The small area of warm light coming from the house (bunk house?) makes the stark conditions even stronger. The horses standing with their heads down against the blowing snow emphasizes the discomfort. However, there is a fortitude underlying the scene as the men and horses work to survive. Probably not as common a situation these days as in Remington's time but anyone who has worked a farm in a blizzard (raises my hand) can feel the scene. I was struck by the level of photo-realism. Quite different from Remington's usual style. Posted by: JTB at January 06, 2025 09:46 AM (yTvNw) 73

If you hate the expression”at the end of the day “ that much I’m assuming you are not a Les Misérables fan. In the first song they go over over the top with that phrase they even use it when there’s no point in using it even as an affectation. But it is a good song if you have talented singers, and even though I love Remington, when I read that title, the first thing I thought of was Les Misérables.

No, it's actually coming down pretty good now. So we now have 5-6 inches of snow, about an inch and a half of ice, and now snow on top of that. And the county just got one of their 3 snow plows out of a ditch it rolled into yesterday. Which means we won't be seeing any snow removal out here for the foreseeable future. I tend to be terse. If a question can be answered in three words, I do not provide an 80 slide powerpoint. 2. I am fundamentally incapable of hearing someone express an idea so cataclysmically stupid that it beggars belief without telling the speaker that they're an idiot. He was in marketing. I had to sit through several meetings where they wanted to institute a procedure change which would have made everything worse and they were always upset when I asked "what problem are you trying to solve". No, actually I’m not sure why people obsessed about that one thing I mean I get it but you have to look outside yourself. One of the only tricks the left has in its bag. Is this idea of something being historic. They will tell you someone is the first female Middle Eastern or elected to a state house. They will say this other person is the first Native American elected as a judge in California. The key to them is to always have someway to claim something is the first time and historic..
If they made Camila president for a week that would destroy the idea of a first female president. I can see the arguments both ways but I promise you the left does not want. In fact, I can promise you that is not going to happen. Posted by: Quint at January 06, 2025 10:49 AM (8Eo9G) 232

Once upon a time I was in the manager ranks. My team always accomplished their goals and we made substantial improvements to the system BUT... I possessed two failings which the company determined made me unsuitable for management.
1. Posted by: I used to have a different nic ======== Money lending in a Christian society that eschewed usury is not a safe occupation whenever the rulers figured out that it was easier to liquidate the lenders than to pay them back. Knights Templar found that to be true as well. Most of what we see of Jewish history is that of the Ashkenanzi. The Sephardi, you rarely hear about as they successfully kept a low profile in their nations similar to the Zoroastrians have in India (or even Iran in modern times) until Israel was established which made their Muslim host nations crazy for killing and expulsion of long established Jewish communities. Posted by: Aetius451AD ====== Porcupine strategy is always a valid one for small nations. More reliable than alliances with larger powers. I am reminded of a German general remarking to a Swiss counterpart about how the Germans would have at least a 2:1 majority if they chose to invade. The Swiss official told the German, we shall have to shoot twice then. Had a buddy that spent his academic life as a NATO specialist. He was always horrified when I suggested that the small Eastern European nations around Russia make themselves into a bone in the throat via universal firearm ownership and dispersed anti tank and anti personnel weapons throughout the populace with a universal draft/reserve system. He preferred the elegant professional army approach and hi tech weaponry. Neither work without a committal to your society surviving even if you don't during a war.
