Sunny, clear skies, 20ish degrees until mid-day.

Although, admittedly, if one snowflake falls it will cause wrecks all over the DFW area.

41 Logging sled. My dad worked in the northern Adirondacks woods cutting timber for a logging outfit, after finishing two years of engineering school. He and his younger bro were on a 2-2-2 program, you go to school I work, then reverse.

Dad was in the first winter of his middle two years.

This was during the middle 30s with the depression in full howl. Somewhere in our family archives is a black and white photo of dad in front of a team hauling a full sled of white pine logs, deep snow all around.

45 It was foggy here last weekend, and I was commenting to Mrs Speck how it must be a difficult thing for artists to grasp the palette of their subject under such conditions -- fog, low light, snow. Everything is muted and sometimes changed entirely, and really painting what you're seeing rather than the default choices must take discipline.

This piece is no different. Other than the yellow, it's almost grayscale. But it renders in the mind as environmentally muted. Beautifully done.

I recall an essay years ago identifying a Monty Python skit. A character blusters a string of similar meaningless phrases. No idea why "at the end of the day" stuck, but yeah, it's annoyingly over-used.

The lovely Mrs. paints with watercolors. I never knew, until recently, that painting clouds, many times, requires a bunch of gray to give contrast and form.

72 Well, this is appropriate for today's weather.

Remington really caught the feel of the blowing snow and cold with the darkness. The small area of warm light coming from the house (bunk house?) makes the stark conditions even stronger. The horses standing with their heads down against the blowing snow emphasizes the discomfort. However, there is a fortitude underlying the scene as the men and horses work to survive.

Probably not as common a situation these days as in Remington's time but anyone who has worked a farm in a blizzard (raises my hand) can feel the scene.

I was struck by the level of photo-realism. Quite different from Remington's usual style.

No, it's actually coming down pretty good now. So we now have 5-6 inches of snow, about an inch and a half of ice, and now snow on top of that.

And the county just got one of their 3 snow plows out of a ditch it rolled into yesterday. Which means we won't be seeing any snow removal out here for the foreseeable future.

Once upon a time I was in the manager ranks. My team always accomplished their goals and we made substantial improvements to the system BUT... I possessed two failings which the company determined made me unsuitable for management.

1. I tend to be terse. If a question can be answered in three words, I do not provide an 80 slide powerpoint.
2. I am fundamentally incapable of hearing someone express an idea so cataclysmically stupid that it beggars belief without telling the speaker that they're an idiot. He was in marketing. I had to sit through several meetings where they wanted to institute a procedure change which would have made everything worse and they were always upset when I asked "what problem are you trying to solve".

Had a buddy that spent his academic life as a NATO specialist. He was always horrified when I suggested that the small Eastern European nations around Russia make themselves into a bone in the throat via universal firearm ownership and dispersed anti tank and anti personnel weapons throughout the populace with a universal draft/reserve system.

He preferred the elegant professional army approach and hi tech weaponry. Neither work without a committal to your society surviving even if you don't during a war.
