The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

The Babylon Bee had better up their game, because the state of New Jersey, led by its chinless champagne socialist governor, has relaxed the standards for teachers to a point where it is absolutely laughable. No longer will teachers have to read at a sixth grade level!

Yeah... you read that correctly. Even before this insulting DEI gift to previously barely unemployable sub-wits, NJ teachers were not held to impressive standards. But now? How will a teacher who can't read at a sixth grade level prepare students for anything more than learning numbers and letters? And that's assuming they can read at all!

Of course this has nothing to do with the education of our children, and most state and federal education regulation is intended to purchase votes -- mostly for Democrats -- or reward favored businesses like publishers or food production or construction, etc. But the big one is the teachers unions.

The NEA, AFT, and the various big state teachers unions are nothing more than advocacy groups for federal and state education spending, which translates directly to increased revenue for their bloated pensions. The idea that they advocate for THE CHILDREN is a sick joke. Adding highly-paid administrators and teachers and teachers aides, and pushing for more paid time off and technology in the classroom has nothing to do with education, and everything to do with money. They sell their votes to the politicians, and the politicians pump up education spending without any link to actual success in the classroom. And because many school districts mandate membership in the union, teachers are captive, and the selection process weeds out candidates who would normally go into teaching, but choose not to because of the coerciveness of union membership.

Add in a rabid leftist cant to everything they advocate for: transgender insanity, no parental notification, mandatory vaccinations (Covid anyone?), teaching their personal brand of America Hate like the 1619 Project, and plain old dumbasses tasked with teaching our kids, it's no wonder that we are rapidly falling behind much of the world!

Yes...I said it. Lots and lots of teachers are barely capable of functioning in modern society. They are the dumbest of the college lot, taking ridiculously easy classes to get a Klown Kollege degree in education. And then, to pump up their salaries, they go back to schools of education for a Masters, and then a few years later get the holy grail of sub-wits: an EdD. But a cursory examination of the curricula will show that these are merely paper degrees. There is nothing remotely challenging in the course work, and the programs are designed for maximum ease rather than rigorous academics.

I've known a few teachers in my day. Most of them are intellectual pygmies. Oh...wait! There is one who is quite bright! He's a high school teacher in NJ. And one hell of a shot with a pistol. Yup...he is a member of my local shooting club.

Charter schools, home schooling, private religious schools, and some non-sectarian private schools provide an alternative to the catastrophic failure of most of our public schools. But until the power of the unions and the education academy is broken, too many American children will be sentenced to a miserable and pathetic education that does nothing for them, except indoctrinate them into a culture of failure.

President Donald Trump understands this, and chose an outsider to lead the Department of Education. Hopefully Linda McMahon destroys the department from the inside, but even modest changes will improve the sad lot of America's youth.

Not unlike the UK, and I would assume the rest of Europe, where those who can possibly afford it will do everything in their power to get their children educated outside of the "daycare of last resort" which are government schools.

18 New Jersey teachers, like Los Angeles firefighters, are not being hired based on any job related skills.

They are being hired solely in order to provide jobs to those that share the delusions of the democrat activists that have been placed in power. The people being hired would otherwise have no access to money, as they don't have any real job skills.

You can listen to any public pronouncement by these so called police chiefs, fire chiefs, and educrats. They don't talk about results for the clients, but results for diversity in their workforce, which is the only metric that is completely unimportant.

Posted by: Thomas Paine at January 09, 2025 11:08 AM (lTGtQ)

19 It certainly can't be in any of New Jersey's 50 richest towns so there must be many good charter schools, home schooling, private religious schools, and - of course - non-sectarian private schools in state that will avoid the disgraceful politics of outgoing Governor, King Philip the unaccountable, and the teachers' unions.

I so hope the incoming Trump administration can handle most of what will be thrown at it, beginning at the starting block.

22 This is what our betters want out of society... an illiterate, uneducated and highly dependent population to lord over. They're getting it in spades too. But the downside is that everything an advanced society depends on requires educated and independent people to maintain the trappings of that society.

I've told this story before: my father was the Principal of a Reform School (required for those kicked out of regular High Schools) back in the 80s.

He told me about a teacher with a PhD -- an immigrant, naturally (from Greece IIRC) -- who was basically English-illiterate. It took him over a year of gathering and presenting evidence to the School District to finally get her fired, as the Teacher's Union of course put up a vigorous fight.

Yes, I know, some of them are great. I had the good fortune of going to a very small government school when I was young that had great teachers, but the system has gone off the rails. Had to homeschool my own to get some reasonable results.

56 I think a great analogy can be made. Government jobs, like teacher and firefighter, are given to those who are loyal party members, despite the fact that they don't have the skills.

In the UK, the labour party actively prevents any investigation, and actively assists in allowing hundreds of thousands of gang rapes of young girls by pakistanis, who are loyal members of the labour party.

Results for the citizens are irrelevant, as long as the party gets what it wants.

This is not the case any longer, females are drawn to other fields. In too many instances the educational field draws from the bottom of the barrel now. It is undeniable. As a military veteran, for a brief period there was a push for more males in the teaching profession, and incentives.

I attended some classes. It was very clear to me that as a caucasian male I was not wanted.

The reason everything is failing is because the gatekeepers have been selecting only by politics for decades. There is absolutely no diversity in thought allowed.

When I was field-promoted by my Grade One teacher to Grade Two, I had to undergo some testing that next summer to prove I was qualified to move on to Grade Three. Homeschooling me might have taken some lawyer time.

105 when I was a little kid our elementary teachers were typically one of our friend's mom...if it was raining Mrs. Giffin would drive is to school, otherwise we rode our bikes or walk. She brought home papers to grade but never seemed hurried or frustrated with her work. School was fun.

Junior high teachers were typically excellent as I recall. 7th grade Texas history was cool. In 8th grade we read through "All's Quite on the Western Front" and stuff like that. 9th graders ruled the school.

Senior High was a blast for me. Football, cars, girls and the beach. In the summer before my senior year I decided I needed to be on my own but I never considered not going to school. I could write my own permits. 60s and 70s might have been the apex but my kids did well in the 80s and 90s.

That was all in Houston. My grands out here in the country are also doing very well. I am so glad they are not having to deal with HISD.

Funny thing, they went further, and those same people could name all five top ten songs, and which actors and actresses were having affairs with who.

126 Sent kids to Catholic school from the very beginning. (I'm not Catholic, local schools were already showing cracks.)

In grade school, there were still some teachers that didn't hold teaching degrees when they began teaching. They worked so hard & had huge classes, and all for little money and many work hours.

All-in-all, they did an excellent job teaching a multitude of subjects to kids that spanned our class system even then. Seldom did a child need to be held back for grades and inability to learn; needed intermediate assistance was promptly obtained through the public school systems; reading was stressed as was science though they lacked money for computer labs, sometimes having only one or two computers for 6th, 7th, 8th grades. Volunteering for community service projects, participation in Science Fairs was also mandatory for those grades. A large majority of the kids won high school scholarships, reduced payment rates.

But all of those teachers surpassed basic requirements for teaching, and thorough reviews of their lives, and pursued degrees. (Had to be obtained within a certain number of years.)

Never regretted that decision.

The town I moved to 6 miles up the road is a more expensive town ranked 97 out of 100 nationally for low crime. Another good school system. Also lilly frigging white. The dirty secret is these shit teachers won't end up here, they'll end up in the shit areas of jersey and those "minority" kids will just get dumber and dumber and shoved through the system. I have a cousin who is a teacher, cute blonde who took a job in a shit area. I asked why, she said because those kids need it, and they aren't getting it. There was one time I voted yes. It was a measure to increase DMV fees. But it wasn’t just an increase, they money would have a specific use. There a few projects designated like expanding a portion of a freeway, some new bridges, things like that. Legit projects that would have alleviated traffic. Well worth the extra $75 a year in car registration fees.

And wouldn’t you know. That’s the one fucking measure people voted down lol. But giving teachers $7k raises, super easy barely an inconvenience.

In Arizona long ago there was a school for delinquent boys called Ft. Grant. When my little brother was 5 or 6 I convinced him that the brown UPS vans he would see on the streets were trucks sent out by Ft. Grant to pick up boys that had disobeyed their parents and gotten in trouble. He told me much later that he was terrorized for years by that idea, hiding in a closet whenever he saw one of those vans drive down the road.

Our schools are funded by property taxes. In fact the citizens of Austin just voted, yes voted, to increase how much we are taxed for the schools. They touted that it would be an increase of about $450 per property... mine went up over $1250 A YEAR. The worst part is Texas has recapture so about 76% of that increase doesn't stay in the district it goes to the state to distribute as it sees fit. Only 24% stays in the district 😱🤯😤
But you see, the teachers need a raise because they can't afford to live here in what they make...and we'll lose all the teachers.

Trump lives in Realsville, and only has a summer house in Fantasyland, which he is going to use as inspiration for improvement and Realsville is going to be the best and most fantastic place you will ever see.
However, the current power brokers are forcing everyone to live in workers housing, are calling it the 4 Seasons, and are charging Club Med prices for the ability to be murdered in their sleep and to live in poverty.
This isn't the definition of "brittle" this is literally immiseration, and it is intentional to bring about a new centrally planned world, it is just that Trump is getting inside that timeline and showing the rats, the garbage and telling everyone they owe it to themselves to do better.

Not just Austin. I posted upthread that bond measures where I live pass easily all the fucking time. And I live in a reddish area. My county voted for Trump all 3 times. Basically 50/50 red/blue divide with a slight red tilt. But when it comes to bind measures for “education” they pass with 60-65% every damn time.

And each time it’s ONLY an increase of $100 per home owner on average. But you start adding those $100s and eventually you get thousands.

The unions have incredible marketing teams to swindle tax payers.

And another part of it is renters think it won’t apply to them. Cuz only those evil home owners have to pay right?

Second, I'd trade all of the tests in the universe to get rid of the Ed School credential requirements. Ed Schools are Marxists madrasas. Doesn't matter if the teachers are in a union or not if they are all lockstep jackboots stomping on kids. X the Ed schools and x the unions then you might have something resembling education.

They are in NH as well. Property taxes fund schools and city/county government.

Now, we don't have a sales tax (except on hotels/rental cars/prepared food), no income tax. NH has full assessed value when determining property values. My town's population is around 32k, with declining student enrollement. Yet the school system is demanding a $90 million budget for FY2026.
