On the same day that a woman was set afire and burned to death on a NYC subway, Kathy Hochul posted selfies of herself on the subway and crowed about how "safe" it was.

She avoided photographing her armed Praetorian surrounding her.

Since the proclamation that the subways are "safe," a -- get this -- deranged homeless man with a mile-long rap sheet pushed a man on to the tracks of an approaching train (content advisory).

And then, get this, a very smug Young Scholar slashed the throat of a subway rider.

And that's not all:

From Sunday night's knifing in an L station to Thursday morning's stabbing of an off-duty MTA worker on a Bronx platform, the violence follows the horrific pre-Christmas arson murder of Debrina Kawam and includes Tuesday's miraculously non-fatal shoving onto tracks in Manhattan.
And the hell-ification of the underground is a predictable consequence of "social justice" policies.
Take Kamel Hawkins, 23 and charged with second-degree assault and attempted murder for allegedly shoving that unsuspecting stranger in front of an incoming 1 train.
No surprise: His long rap sheet includes a 2019 attack on a police officer, plus an assault, harassment and weapons possession charge from October and a 2020 case where the judge released him without bail despite prosecutors asking for remand.
Keep letting violent perps walk free, and the violence grows -- but progs insist going easy on criminals matters more than preventing innocent people from being killed or maimed.
They've told us this.
Way back in 2007, Milwaukee District Attorney John Chisholm, one of the first wave of radical "reform" prosecutors, laid it out: "Is there going to be an individual I divert, or I put into a treatment program, who's going to go out and kill somebody? You bet. Guaranteed. It's guaranteed to happen. It does not invalidate the overall approach."
Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg and the state legislators behind New York's "criminal justice reforms" might not be as frank about it, but they make the same calculation.
As do those who proclaim the moral urgency of letting the dangerously mental ill roam free and untreated, or allowing millions of unvetted illegal migrants -- rapists, murders and gangbangers among them -- to cross the border.
"Enforcing the law" is an inherently evil, white supremacist project that must be eradicated; the people who get robbed, raped or murdered along the way are collateral damage.

And the whole sad wave of underground violence is a predictable -- indeed, predicted -- result of the progressive refusal to fight farebeating, the "gateway drug" of subway crime.
The needless, bloody chaos won't stop until this poisonous ideology is rejected at every level of government.

Not even leftwing lunatics will accept this level of public disorder, mayhem, and slaughter.

So Kathy Hochul is pretending to care for the moment, saying she'll take a look at laws which make it nearly impossible to involuntarily commit a dangerous lunatic to the mental asylum.

She's triangulating against the NY Assembly, blaming them for the state of chaos:

This week alone, a man survived being shoved onto the tracks and fracturing his skull. The new year also started with three subway stabbings in two days. One of the victims was an MTA employee.
Late last month, Debrina Kawam was set on fire and killed on a train in Coney Island.
"Many of these horrific incidents have involved people with serious untreated mental illness, the result of a failure to get treatment to people who are living on the streets and are disconnected from our mental health care system. We have a duty to protect the public from random acts of violence, and the only fair and compassionate thing to do is to get our fellow New Yorkers the help they need," Hochul said in a statement.
She says people on the streets with untreated mental illness "is an issue that has plagued New York for decades."
She says she will include new legislation in the executive budget to change New York's involuntary commitment standards.
"Currently hospitals are able to commit individuals whose mental illness puts themselves or others at risk of serious harm, and this legislation will expand that definition to ensure more people receive the care they need," Hochul said in a statement. "I will also introduce companion legislation to change Kendra's Law, improving the process through which a court can order certain individuals to participate in Assisted Outpatient Treatment while also making it easier for individuals to voluntarily sign up for this treatment. I've been pushing these changes for the past three years -- the time for legislative action is now."

The New York Civil Liberties Union said that while Hochul is correct that the status quo regarding mentally ill homeless people is "untenable," the solution she's seeking isn't the right one.
"The change we need is not simply to lock more people away, especially those who pose no immediate threat to themselves or others. That doesn't make us safer, it distracts us from addressing the roots of our problems, and it threatens New Yorkers' rights and liberties," NYCLU Executive Director Donna Lieberman said.

Note the below incident -- which is horrifying, discretion advised -- was supposedly not an act of terror. Rather, supposedly, the driver was 69 years old and became "confused" while driving.

But this sort of thing doesn't get stopped when crime is rampant. If NYC weren't an ultraviolent zoo this side of A Clockwork Orange, cops might have stopped this guy from driving earlier.

I believe it was an elderly person who didnt see them (presumably because he had the green light and was looking straight and not where he was turning).

I will say this about driving in NYC -- you really need to have your head on a swivel between the migrants on their e-bikes delivering food, people in crosswalks, cars and trucks double parked, people pulling out in front of you etc. Lots going on.

Correct. Most with schizophrenia and drug / alcohol problems. Not a good mix.

And yeah, there really isn't a medical solution to that. You can zonk them out on pills, but they (obviously) don't like that and it doesn't do anything to fix the underlying problem.

And I'm not compassionless about this. My dads best friends brother has been in and out of mental hospitals his whole life with schizophrenia. He's not violent, and at times can be very nice and normal seeming, but he can also get incredibly paranoid (both on and off the meds) and he constantly hears voices and regularly sees things that aren't there. But he recognizes that about himself. Can't live on his own. Huge financial and emotional burden on his family. The whole thing is sad. But no one who is not a monster would say the best thing for him is to let him live on a subway platform covered in his own shit harassing people

We when were in DC for my Medivac from Cuba we saw a dead woman on one of the subway platforms. She had just been killed and a metro cop was calling it in. Blood was everywhere pooling underneath her. No idea what happened but I suspect someone was trying to rob her and she fought back as she still was holding on to her purse.

The only time I ever felt "safe" on public transportation was in Japan. I never personally witnessed it but I have talked to people who said that if someone acts up on one of the trains or platforms there cops will appear and beat the ever loving $hit out of them and drag them away for some serious jail time.

Bad behavior on public transportation is so rare in Japan because everyone knows if they get out of line they will face an a$$ beating of epic proportions.

The worst I ever saw was a puke covered homeless guy stand up and whip it out to take a leak. The result was a fat black lady laying into him with her purse and giving him a loud lecture on how his behavior reflected on her since they were both black. The guy put it away and sat and put his head in his hands for the rest of the ride while the woman pulled out some tissues to help clean him off (and clean off her purse). Things you learn riding the subway. Never stand near tracks. Never keep your wallet in an accessible pocket. Never bring food (it's a magnet). Eyes on a swivel. ID threats on entering and waiting. Look for the most vulnerable and stand in their location.

There are laws against loitering in the subway, selling without a permit, begging for money, eating / drinking / smoking / listening to loud music in the subway system, jumping turnstiles... Lots of laws.

There are cops in some stations, but they hang out at the mezzanine and when they do go to the platforms or put a food on the train, they ignore every single law.

I watch them walk past sketchy homeless people smoking cigarettes in the subway every day.

And not for nothing, I'm still salty that I got yelled at for vaping on an open air above ground platform with almost no one there a few years ago. Cop put his hand on me and everything.

143 I worked in the mental health field for a number of years. Thee are different models to deal with people who suffer from serious mental illness. These are not people who benefit from psychiatry. I always though that this was a medical condition which could come and go. Sometimes meds could help control it. Some people were a danger to themselves and need to be locked up.
Onset of Schizophrenia can come on in late teens. It is shocking families to all,of a sudden have a child who is hearing voices, wandering the streets without clothes, acting violently. It is very sad.

It my case it was age related lattice thinning which tends to happen with people like me who’re extremely near-sighted. It tore out of the blue while I was eating dinner….. if you ever see flashing lights or a bunch of new floaters suddenly get yourself to an eye doctor pronto because if the retina detaches you can lose sight in that eye

They claim it would destroy the public schools and in some rural counties like mine, there is no private alternatives. It's all just a big job protection racket for the teachers and admin staff in public schools.

Exactly. There was a point not too long ago, where if you did the right thing, you would be Daniel Penneyed in the appropriate way: heralded as a hero. I lived in Chicago for exactly one year, in 1985. I did not have money. I lived in Roger's Park and commuted on the L to River North, which wasn't River North back then, but just the area around the Merchandise Mart. The L was nasty, men openly peed in the stairwells, everything was filthy and noisy, all sorts of awful people would board and ride and harass. Took nearly an hour to get to work changing trains, and an hour back.

I would not do that on a dare again. I never felt "safe" the entire time I was in Illinois.

Now the feds are making noises about "investigating" our school district. The administrator has been placed on admin leave but she is still drawing a paycheck and is lawyering up at our expense. Yup, Chevy has OnStar, which tracks you whether you want it to or not... even opting out, they still track you.

Only way to stop it is to get behind the front panel, and find the correct plug to disconnect, so it only disconnect the onstar from the Antenna...
