38 We visited the Redwoods last April. Absolutely fantastic trees. We did the Cathedral of Trees trail towards evenings and it was a little spooky on the way out in the dark.

Heh, Hordemind. Snowing here, so the wife and I did a regular potato soup this evening. We always put fried onion in and the last couple of times, cooked chopped bacon separately, drained it and used it like croutons. Almost a stick of butter in the thing.

Wake me in a month after the carb coma wears off, assuming my heart restarts.

70 These diversity hires in the fire-fighting "leadership" *really* undermine the hard work and high qualification of the rank-and-file. I've had a couple of fire fighters as clients over the years and both explained (as one example) of how difficult it is to sit for the Captain's exam. Since most fire truck fleets are assembled over the course of a couple of decades and kept in service until its no longer possible, one portion of the Captain's exam involved knowing the field specs (water capacity, number of hoses, number of seats, gas mileage, tank size, etc) of more than 30 different makes/models of fire trucks.

Does anyone believe for even a minute that any of the 3 people pictured in that "leadership" picture that was posted here yesterday could even score a 50% score on the Captain's exam?

You would think a competent fire chief for a large urban area like that would very concerned with making sure the "hydrants have water".

Yep, the engineering and all that would be someone else's purview, but you'd think a chief would be like, talking with them, and consulting and all that. You know, if we have a big fire, then we're gonna have high water demand. We need to maybe make sure we have the capacity and a priority system and all that.

My weather station recorded no precipitation all day. That's expected, the "tipping bucket" doesn't work with solid precip. However past hour, it started tripping, and is showing 0.13" accumulation. That's melting of whatever slush piled up.

It may actually be in the ballpark of the liquid equivalent, but I wouldn't bet on it.

To be fair to the nutritionist I believe she was referring to vegetable portions to mix up the nutrients instead of just eating iceberg lettuce by the pound. She wasn't too bad, even had some interesting fats like a good serving size of meat for the meal is the size of your palm.

I went for another and she'd been moved on so my interest waned in seeing them.

My late cousin, who had one of the big, NWS rain gauges, would've done the proper liquid measurement tomorrow morning.

When you get snow/sleet you take the inner cylinder out, and let the solid stuff fall in the outer cylinder. To take the reading, you bring it back in and melt it.

To speed up the process, you can carefully add hot water, measured precisely in the inner cylinder, to the mix, and then subtract it off.

He would've done that sometime tomorrow.

I was just looking at GSP's observations. Starting about noon, they recorded light snow, with a liquid equivalent reading of 0.12" by 4PM. Then it shifted to freezing rain, with one period of "unknown precip" (means they couldn't tell if it was more snow or sleet or freezing rain). They've now racked up 0.34" total for the day.

I stupidly agreed to help Her Majesty in some national breed club business, a review of standing rules. There are about 15 sections, each containing as many as 50 standing rules.

My job is to organize the current rules in an Excel document so that they're coherent. All I have to work with is a Word document that was put together by someone who had no idea how to organize anything. Every section has at least three different formats that I have to pick apart. I may die doing this.

Heh. Dogs are amazing. I have a Belgian Malinois neighbor. He and I were not friends but we tolerated each other. Normally, he eyes me warily but doesn't growl or bark when I walk by his enclosure. The other day when I fell on the ice I was right outside his 6' high pen. After I started to get up, slowly, he jumped his fence, ran over, sat down and stared at me for a moment.

"Dude, You okay?"

Sensing I was fine, he ran back towards the fence, jumped back in, and then sat and wagged his tail while I shuffled off home.

I think we are buds now.

A combination of diminished budget, and an apparent lack of stored water upstream. Evidently that part of California has a separate system for non-potable water than tap water. Not sure. Which might explain why folks could take showers and do laundry, but the hydrants were dead.

But in my AO, hydrants are part of the main water system, and are checked regularly.

CA is fooked.
