Monday Overnight Open Thread - December 30, 2024 [Doof]

doof-winter1.jpg

Howdy Hordelings, and welcome to the final Monday night ONT of 2024. Nothing serious on the agenda tonight. Just some stuff to make your Monday a Funday! Thanks for stopping by. Wouldn't be as nice without you!

Make College Football Bowl Games Fun Again

doof-poptart2.jpg

doof-poptart.jpg

The organizers of this past Saturday's Pop-Tarts Bowl did their part.

The second annual Pop-Tarts Bowl was nothing short of a sweet treat.

Amid the nail-biting matchup between Iowa State University and the University of Miami, which ended in a 42-41 victory for the Cyclones, Pop-Tarts caused chaos on the field.

At the 2024 bowl game, fans met three mascots, Hot Fudge Sundae, Wild Berry and Cinnamon Roll, via a stripping - sorry, unwrapping - reveal prior to the start of the game.

"just when you thought the pop tarts bowl couldn't get ANY sexier," one X user wrote about Hot Fudge Sundae's reveal, which involved the mascot ripping his aluminum wrapper open right down the middle.

***

Aside from the mascots, the game featured plenty of Pop-Tarts references. Sprinkles were painted along the sidelines and the winning team's trophy featured a working toaster.

Instead of dumping gallons of Gatorade on each other after winning the game, players covered their coaches in tons of mini Pop-Tarts.

The trophy is a working toaster!

Retail Worker Rant

Having worked many years in retail in the 80s and 90s, your humble host has a personal appreciation for this guy's humor. If you've never worked in retail, it may not hit you the same way.

Artistic Talent -- But Why??

Looks like something that could have been in the the fantastic music video for the song "Take on Me" back in the 80s!

Bang!

Guilty as charged!

doof-rollcaps.jpg

Anyone else lay the roll out and run a rock along the whole length to create a machine gun effect? If not, can we even be friends?

Are these things still available?

I rarely complain about bad or mediocre service. I just don't come back. But good service? I always ask to speak with the manager and compliment the waiter. I have learned to start the conversation by saying, "This isn't a complaint."

We'd go up by the railroad tracks with our Dad and make gourd bombs. Drill a hole in a ripe gourd with a pocket knife, shove in a firecracker, light it and throw it into the air.

He did all the lighting and throwing, though because it needed to be time precisely.
As an eye doc, he'd seen his share of firecracker injuries.

I was with my scout troop about a dozen years back when we camped for a weekend at the local YMCA summer camp.

As it happened, that same weekend had the camp hosting what we were told was a "Dad-Daughter Weekend" for some group whose affiliation we never learned.

The girls (early teens and younger) spent their time out and about in the camp and engaging in activities. The dads spent their time sitting back at the campsite, tending the fire, and playing the entire oeuvre of the Grateful Dead, loudly and constantly, for thirty-six hours straight. It wasn't quite hell, but it was as close as I have come to it in my life.

Oh, they were drinking, too. Such was their idea of bonding, I guess.

Sorry, this is just wrong. Not my opinion but a fact.

The Dead didn't become up until the end the largest grossing touring band in history by being boring. They didn't get their own Sirius station that is still going strong by being boring.

They didn't get musicians as diverse as Branford Marsalis and Maria Muldaur and Bruce Hornsby sitting in with them by being boring. That's the description by someone who never actually listened to the music. It doesn't get any more right by being common. They were one of the best live bands in history, not a studio remix, Top 40, listen to what corporate music wants you to hear on the radio band.

Nobody under 50 listens to Rush today. Not that many listened to them when they were being flagged relentlessly. Go to a Dead and Company and look at how many 20 year olds there are.

Or listen to Branford Marsalis. I'll take his opinion any day.

164 I tried to take algebra seriously and I seriously failed every time. The sirens of Elizabethan history sang much louder and harmoniously than the sirens of math and science, which is how I ended up owning a bookstore.

That retail rant was pretty on target. In my twenty-five years as a bookseller, I heard just about every one of his kvetches. The one about checking in the back was my favorite. How was I supposed to sell a book stashed in the back room? No, I didn't hide books in the back room simply to annoy you. You saw a paperback copy of that recently released hardback in Washington D.C.? Why didn't you buy it in Washington D.C.? No, I can't sell you a copy of a book that not only hasn't been released yet, but isn't even on the publishing schedule because the writer has been fighting cancer for the past couple of years.

My bookstore was in an area loaded with antique (junk) stores, and I was constantly asked when they would be open. One day I'd had it and told the individual that I didn't know because Joe hadn't given me his schedule for the week. The lady totally missed the sarcasm and asked, "Oh, you don't get along with each other?" Ga-a-ah!!!

177 If you want to get into the Dead you need to start in the beginning. in 65 they were essentially a Psychedelic Skiffle Band. They started to veer to straight Pysch and then branched out into Experimental Pych for a bit before embracing Americana and Bluegrass and then melding it into Countrified Rock and Roll. Later dipping into Disco and Funk for an all too short period and then sort of looping back through it starting again in 1980.

Check The Warlocks stuff from 65.
Then check them out in 1967-8.
Then hit up the Acoustic 70s Shows and their accompanying Electric Sets. 2.13-14.70 or 5.11.70 would be good ones.

If you don't get it after that, I can't help you.

Question: Did anyone "joke" about Ronald Reagan's acting BEFORE he was a Republican?

No, right?

But, after is a different story. Reagan was a "lousy actor" they said. Reagan only did a few shows with a chimp, they said. Reagan was small-time, they said. Bonzo was a better actor, they said.

Reagan's "friends" in hollywood and media turned on him because of his politics. Before that, though, Everyone loved Ronald Reagan.

The Heat Lamps International Union made a major mistake when they threw over their sweet gig at McDonalds for the bucolic charm and easygoing lifestyle of the "Meat Products" rollers at 7-Eleven. Little did they know that they had hitched their wagon to a dying franchise.

I wonder it's a lot easier to "hack" the US govt because of the Thousands of federal layabouts pretending to "work" from home (so-called teleworkers) with dubiously secured internet-connected PC's in their domiciles.

Posted by: Soothsayer at December 30, 2024 10:53 PM (c+IRX)

Nope, you're not. As a matter of fact, gov't workers* must use gov't issued laptops that use fairly high-end VPNs before you can get to much of anything. And 2-factor authentication to even get into the computer.

Having said that, the servers can be horribly insecure. Especially with some of the coding practices contractors use. I would swear some of the "programmers" can't spell C++, much less code in it.

(* This is primarily DoD I know of, but the rest of gov't has been coming along.)

Six geese a-laying? Geese aren't laying at Christmas time. They retain the wild trait of seasonal laying, generally in spring. They're just crapping everywhere and chasing after anyone who comes near. Noisy, too.

I'm hoping we get some predators like coyotes to get rid of them, the way the hawks and owls have been taking care of the ring-neck pheasants, black "colly" birds, French hens, doves, and partridges.

At least I've found a local nursery to take all these pear trees away, although they won't take them until after the 6th.

What chaps my ass about fast food joints these days, is the menus on video screens that change pages, just as you are trying to decide whether a quarter pounder with cheese, plus fries, is a better or worse deal than 2 regular cheeseburgers with fries. Sp one of the reasons that customers take a long time to make a choice is that the options get whisked away before you can decide.

Ordering kiosks in fast food restaurants are tools of the devil. At least when you had to order through some disinterested low wage schlub, you could talk them around to what you wanted.

Now it's all, "What fucking screen can I order just fries with?" And, "No, I don't want to join your frequent customer club!"

376 I recently ran across the story of Yoshiko Kawashima

She was a minor Chinese royal who ended up working for Hirohito's Japan and was executed for it.

That's not the half of her story though - after the fall of the Chinese monarch she was adopted by a friend of her father's who happened to be a Japanese agent - so you can see how she followed in his footsteps. He also sexually assaulted her and you'll be shocked to know in later life she liked to dress in men's clothes and because bi-sexual.

She worked for the Japanese in Manchucko and her escapades were pushed by the Japanese and local media. I suspect the only reason she isn't popular in modern western Big Gay media is the slight problem of her working for the imperial Japanese...

Back when I was a pre-teen, an aunt and family came to visit for the only time. They lived in West By God. We took a trip down to Hatteras. I saw my aunt sitting on a dune staring at the ocean; it was her first time seeing it. So I went and sat beside her. We talked about the ocean, the waves . . . and things. There was a reason she was my favorite aunt.

I advise against pop-tarts from Sam's. Not sure what it is, but they taste different from regular grocery store pop-tarts. I suspect it has something to do with the fact that they're packaged for individual sale, so the recipe might be slightly different for longevity.

And I'll just add, cinnamon pop-tarts are the way to go (though their apple pop-tarts were great, too, though I don't know if they still make those).

476 Werner found the retail comedy bit truly hilarious, and would only add that restaurant work has its own version of that. The customer who peers at their steak and snarls "I ordered it well-done!" and waits for you, the humble Kellner, to take the steak, which has not even a ghost of pink anywhere, back to the chef, sets in motion a chain of events that leads to you returning to the table with a charred obscenity which the customer proclaims inedible and demands to speak with the chef.

Werner urges caution: please, mein Herr, do not do this. He has a variety of knives, has consumed an inhuman amount of wine, and was never that stable to begin with. Of course, my counsel is not heeded, and Werner goes to the charming young woman who greets the guests and tells her that it is going to be another 112 night. (We don't use 911.) I go outside and fire up a cigarette as I await the incoming cops and emts. By this time, Werner is on a first-name basis with most of the first-responders. The smoke trails upward as Werner gazes into the night sky. Is that a Starlink satellite? Elon truly is everywhere. Ach.

520 Also, the tragedy of the two Bigfoot hunters who perished due to the elements has kindled Werner's cinematic imagination. Already have I done a documentary about an idiot who wrongly concluded that Grizzlies were lovely, huggable, gentle giants. Now Werner is thinking "Squatchmen: An Inevitable Destiny Revealed." This will be huge. Jack Black is not getting very much work lately, so Werner thinks he can employ him for a recreation of the famed Patterson-Gimlin film without worrying about IP issues. Or make-up, for that matter. We shall journey to Boggy Creek and interview numerous Squatchers. Werner will press them with the prospect of shooting a Sasquatch. If they oppose the idea, I shall ask "But what if you really, really don't like Sasquatch? Is not the bullet more merciful than a more pain-staking death agony?" Werner will confess that he would not oppose the use of an effective rail gun when it's Squatch-killin' time. If only Kinsky were still around, so that the production time could slather him with raw meat, deer urine, and primate pheromones so that he might be sent into the deep forests of the Pacific Northwest to draw the attention of the Squatch.

Ammonia becomes a strong base, ammonium hydroxide, when dissolved in water. Ironically, each of those toxic refrigerants is the remedy for the other. Use dilute sulfurous acid solution to neutralize an ammonia leak, and dilute ammonium hydroxide to neutralize a sulfur dioxide leak. Ammonium sulfate would result, which is a fertilizer, and fairly innocuous.

538 Tollhouse Bag recipe IS the right one. BUT.... Assemble DIFFERENTLY.

Very lightly MELT unsalted butter. Add the eggs. Whisk in the eggs till blended.

Divide the "brown sugar" component into 50/50 Light and Dark sugars. Then, grind out the sugars from the measuring cup, ENSURING there are zero clumps of molasses-fied dark sugars in the mix. I.E., make sure it's all POWDER.

Whisk in all sugars into the butter/egg mix. Till silky smooth. Same with the bit of vanilla extract.

All Flour, Salt and other Dry Ingredients should have been combined in their own bowl. NOW, slowly mix the dry into the wet, folding with spatula, until creamy smooth dough results.

NOW slowly fold in CHILLED Tollhouse Chips., till all are in.

Do your Cookie Sheet/baking/Cookie Sheet thing. Keep replacing bowl of dough in fridge, until process is complete.

Result. Crunchy outside. Chewy inside. Layers of flakiness to you have to see to believe.

ALL MEASURES of INGREDIENTS EXACTLY AS ON BAG.

Yeah. I have become a snowbird. There are many, many such in the Phoenix metro area, in the "valley of the Sun". Some snowbirds come and stay in rental accommodations, some bring their RV's and rent sites, some own "park model" trailers in trailer parks, and some bought actual houses or condos on owned land. Some buy raw land and build. I have managed to have friends in both the snowbird community, and among the permanent residents.

541 For those depending on federal charging money, even during a less-than-enthusiastic Trump administration, there is some good news: It will be very hard for the feds to claw back all of that federal charger funding. The government has already allocated at least $3.5 billion in charger money to the states. Forty-two states have started taking bids on charger contracts, and 12 have at least one station up and running. Those states span the political gamut: Texas, Utah, Kentucky, and Ohio all voted for Republicans this October, and are ahead in charger build-outs.

And an astro-gnomonical fun fact for New Year's. At current epoch, Sirius, the Alpha Big Dog of the sky, is directly opposite the Sun relative to our vantage point on New Year's Day.

Sirius will transit (directly over the median) very close to apparent solar midnight, where you are. So, you can ring in the apparent solar New Year when Sirius crosses the meridian.

Note this is very close to exact, just a minute or two difference. What time this will be in standard time and local mean time depends on longitude, but no matter where you are, it's the same for the true sun.

Here, and for Mike whose longitude is very close to here, that time is 12:30AM EST, which is less than 2 minutes before local solar midnight.

My eldest worked in retail during college around 2006 ; I won't name the store, but she was issued a blue vest with the words "How can I help you?" emblazoned on the back. After about a week, she expressed that she wanted a new vest that said "Why should I help you?", and within a month she said that a more accurate vest would say "Can you even be helped??"

Prior to Hurricane Michael Georgia lead the nation in pecan production. Afterwards, Georgia's production dropped by about 20% and New Mexico's Mesilla Valley became the nation's largest pecan production area.

Buck Dharma is a huge Jerry fan and Rush used to open for BOC before eclipsing almost everyone. Rush was one of the few hard rock bands who long after their heyday could sell out any arena, the others being Iron Maiden and Metallica.

There is certainly one, and the others are simply men forcing themselves on her. Not rape-rape, not penetration, but the same essential attack, without a penis. She was certainly humiliated into submission, which is the point of rape. Perhaps you can tell me what the point of the movie was, except to show a thoroughly corrupt and horrible situation that ends horribly as well. Not really entertainment.

There isn't one.

She's about to have consensual sex, figures out that the guy she brought home is in bed with the cartel, at which point he tries to kill her. There's never any sexual violence even suggested.

She get's in the CIA guy's face during an op, threatening to go public, and he roughs her up. There's nothing sexual about it.

Finally, a CIA contractor makes her sign an official document, again on threat of physical harm, presumably death (as he suggests not signing it is suicide). Again, nothing remotely sexual.

Hate the movie all you want. But rape doesn't have anything to do with it, unless you are using Humpty Dumpty definitions.

607 Rape is not sexual. It is violence.

Maybe I'm being uncharitable in calling this leftist argumentation. But there is argument problem
here. The basis reasoning you seem to be using is:

Premise 1: Rape is a crime of violence.

Premise 2: X, Y, and Z committed crimes of violence.

Conclusion: Therefore, X, Y, and Z committed rape (or its very near equivalent).

The problem is that even if rape is a crime of violence (a debatable proposition), not all crimes of violence are rape. We don't think all assaulters, kidnappers, robbers, or murderers etc. are rapists.

I remember the red roll caps, and the sheet of green peel-off single caps, for use in Kentucky rifles. Daniel Boone was on TV then. I had the wood stocked, steel tube barrel model that shot a cork ball, a friend had the fancier hard plastic model. I preferred mine.

The red roll caps are still available online, but the brand and packaging are different.

I never used the sledgehammer, as I wanted EVERY shot to count, but I did lave an unwound roll in a charcoal barbecue once. Mention of this was made, many months later, but no punishment.
