Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Sunday Overnight Open Thread - December 29, 2024 [Doof]Howdy Hordelings, and welcome to the fifth and final Sunday of December. Thanks for stopping by. You have a lot of options when it comes to where to spend your time. The fact that you chose to be here says, well, umm... Anyway - glad you're here!
Jimmy Carter 1924 - 2024 Jimmy Carter, 39th president of the United States, dead at 100 Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States and a former peanut farmer whose vision of a "competent and compassionate" government propelled him into the White House, died on Sunday, according to local media. He was 100. The news was announced by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Sunday. Carter's death follows the passing of his wife Rosalynn on Nov. 19, 2023 at the age of 96 with her family by her side at the Carter home in Plains, Georgia, just days after she had been admitted to hospice care. The late former president himself had entered hospice care in February 2023. Carter survived for years after he had a "small mass" removed from his liver in early August 2015 and later that month announced he had liver cancer that had spread throughout his body. Although I was just a young Doof in elementary school, I did live through the Carter years and do remember them. It was not a prosperous time in America. Former / future President Trump has nicer words than any I care to muster up. The Simpsons got it right Christmas Wrap-up Christmas 2024 has come and gone. Hopefully Santa treated you well and you aren't too deeply in debt from treating your loved ones well. Before we look ahead to the New Year, here are 2 stories to help us close the book on Christmas. Perhaps some of you Hordelings in the Dallas / Fort Worth area saw this? Best Holiday Light Show in the Sky Wins Guinness World Record With Dazzling 5,000 Drone Christmas Display To celebrate the holiday season, Sky Elements provided some happy drone news by creating the largest swarming light show ever to have flown in the United States. Set to music, the light show created massive motion-filled scenes that captured the spirit of the holidays—a Thanksgiving turkey, a winter wonderland scene, a gingerbread village, and, of course, Santa’s sleigh with reindeer. Making the holiday a little more magical in Mansfield, Texas, 4,981 drones lit up the sky to ring in the season. Perhaps some of you Hordelings in the Northern Virginia area saw this? Owl Flies Down Chimney And Perches on Top of Family’s Christmas Tree Twas the week before Christmas, and perched on the tree was an magical visitor as wise as can be… It came down the chimney, but wasn’t named Santa, a majestic barred owl dropped in unexpected. Savannah Burgoyne was at home with her young children in Arlington, Virginia, when she first saw the bird fly through her living room and land atop the tree—and a finer tree topper you’ll never find. The ONT would like to note that both of these occurrences took place within reasonable distance of widely attended annual MoMe events. Draw your own conclusions. Looking ahead to New Year's Eve 2 interesting ideas for queueing things up to synchronize with the stroke of midnight on January 1. Celebrate with Lieutenant Dan The ONT can not speak to the accuracy of the timing. Best to check for yourself. Celebrate with Phil Collins Looking ahead to New Year's Resolutions This doggo's effort is pathetic. The ONT recommends the pooch make a resolution to train with Piper, AOSHQ resident fitness advocate. — Doglover (@puppiesDoglover) December 27, 2024 Speaking of pathetic efforts. Check out this resolution from "Tampon Tim" and his wife. What a choice he was for Veep. How did the Dems lose? It remains such a mystery. DJ Doof – Disco (and adjacent) Version Disco, Punk Rock, New Wave, and Soft Rock (now called Yacht Rock) were prevalent during the Carter era. See - I found something nice to say about the 39th president. Tonight’s ONT brought to you by a perfectly named guy Your feedback may or may not be very important to me. Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley was having his weekly press conference in the Summer of 1976.
Not much was going on, and Daley was talking about going fishing in Lake Michigan, and how the fishing had improved since the lake near Chicago had been cleaned up. Meanwhile, the press was desperately trying to get Daley to say something about Jimmy Carter's "lust in his heart" comment, which had just come out, but Daley just kept talking about fishing. The press conference concluded, and a reporter despairingly said: "Mr. Mayor, don't you have anything to say about Carter's comment?" Daley replied: "You know, it's a funny thing about fish. Day 4, a day late
Today my true love delivered four blackbirds, or "colly birds" they used to be called. I'm preparing a pie crust in expectation of more. Three more French hens. More neck-wrenching, more plucking, more feathers, and more space in the deep freeze. I may need to rent more freezer space. The hawks had to fight some owls for the two turtle doves when I hurled them out the back door. I may have to move the truck out of the garage. Four pear trees and a mess, literally, of partridges. Anticipating what's next, I'm negotiating to repurchase the farm I sold last Spring. Day 5 I had hoped my true love would give me the gift of some jewelry I could hawk to pay for things, but instead I received five ring-necked pheasants. Heck with it. Pheasants, blackbirds, hens, doves, partridges, they're all tossed into the yard where a growing number of raptors and owls have gathered. I don't think Carter loved America like most Americans.
In fact I think he was more left of center than some of you realize. From what I can tell he saw America similar to how Obama did. Not as bad, but it would explain a lot of his actions. I hated carter with the heat of 1000 suns. He ground the country to a practical standstill. Across the board he pretty much destroyed it all. Odd and even plates to get gas. $3 limit at gas stations on the jersey parkway, not even 3 gallons, meaning you barely got to the next station just to sit in lines again. Cars weren't getting 30+ mpg back then. Real fun trying to get to gig venues, or vacation, or anywhere. Most times it would have been faster to go lewis and clark and just get horses and boats. Interest rates? My father had started a new business the year that miserable prick became president. Sometimes I would wonder what stopped my father from eating a gun barrel because the economy was dead, and even if he got the loan at a billion percent interest could he even make the payments? By sheer will he succeeded, but it was really ugly for a time. I was supposed to go to college. I decided to give that up because no way was I going to add the cost of that on top of what my parents were already dealing with. We won't even talk about his fuckups in the ME, which left ripples we are STILL dealing with. He needs to be fired through every sun in the galaxy.

Posted by: four seasons at December 29, 2024 10:37 PM (3ek7K)[/t] As mentioned above, a Democrat thing. One story I remember about Carter, and all but forgotten now, was how, being a Soutyhern Baptist, he didn't drink alcohol. So rather than not drink himself, he had a 'no alcohol' policy at White House Dinners, banning the evil booze. Way, Way Downriver (and Gref if you're here) - about disappearing guns, there was one at the coastal artillery installation at Pt Loma, now Cabrillo National Monument, here. I think it was down on the harbor side. As I recall some decent illustrations/photos of it at the small museum - or maybe that's online. There is a nice display in the former radio shack (concrete building) about the WWII era, including the Battle of Los Angeles. Unfortunately at least two of the ocean-facing high-up batteries (14-in or 16-in, can't recall) now house city water treatment facilities. They were open when I was a kid.

For weeks afterward, obscure bus wrecks in Outer Mongolia and Buttcrackistan get front-page billing, and the normies think there has been a huge surge in bus plunges. Posted by: Erebus- Ex Killer Whale at December 29, 2024 10:44 PM (elaR+) Often those dictators were "seeking freedom" over some "colonial" power. Then went right back to totalitarian tribalism once they had "freedom." And that was part of Carter's Progressivism that helped ruin the world in the 70s. I was on a Boeing 727 that had to rip up the aisle and put down the landing gear manually because its hydraulic system malfunctioned. We first went over the Atlantic to empty all the fuel and made an emergency landing where fire and emergency vehicles were there to meet us. So glad I was just 12 and thought it was a cool adventure. America built it - and the national security issues are rather large. It’s about 8000 miles extra to go around the tip of south America, that has some of the weather on the planet. The US and Navy needs that flexibility and control over the canal itself.
What was Carter’s purported logic in giving up the canal? What an idiot, or his handlers called the tune I guess. Posted by: Common Tater at December 30, 2024 12:04 AM (MdA1p) 360

"We stole it, fair and square" Two classing quotes from the time about the Canal, both IIRC from S.I. Hayakawa. Of course both actually incorrect, even though funny. We built it, so we weren't giving it "back". And we didn't steal it, we built it. We did manage to create the nation of Panama in order to do all this, so I guess we helped the locals "steal" the country from Colombia. Posted by: rhomboid at December 30, 2024 12:10 AM (1m82a) 369

I had to spend a week with Jimmy and Roslyn when they were being honored with Onassis awards in Greece. I was the liaison between their SS and the Greek security, since I was the ambassador's staff aid. Up a 5 every morning to run with them, then at the office at 7, various activities during the day, then evening events. This made the Codel from Hell seem like a blissful, peaceable event. President Carter was nice. We knew a lot of the same people in the southern Baptist convention, and could chat about that. But there was a sarcastic bent to anything he said to me or the Ambassador. Roslyn was the meanest woman I have ever met. She was rude to the ambassador's wife, because she and the Ambo were R's. She wouldn't look at me, much less say hello. I could go on, but suffice to say, I think their attitudes had a lot to do with how they governed: poor indeed.

Not even close. The defining event of Jimmy Carter is him traveling to North Korea at Bill Clinton's behest to attempt to open a dialogue with the NORKS. A sea level canal?!
Why didn't anybody think of that before? Posted by: Itinerant Alley Butcher at December 30, 2024 01:52 AM (/lPRQ) The sea level route through Nicaragua was proposed in colonial times. Seems that political considerations always prevented it from happening. The Spanish rowed and towed their galleons up the Rio San Juan to Lake Nicaragua, and built the city of Granada on its northern shore. At some points, the western shore of the lake is within 20 miles of the Pacific, over a range of low hills. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at December 30, 2024 02:01 AM (8zz6B) 442
My chickens are currently in molt so I have had the pleasure of buying eggs at $4.50/dz. Sokes or eggs? Tough decision. Thanks Brandon.
Posted by: Sock Monkey * Justice for Ashli Same here. One of five has started lying again. Three eggs in five days. I think some have aged out and I'll have to get some new chicks. Posted by: Itinerant Alley Butcher at December 30, 2024 02:04 AM (/lPRQ) 443

Hey Horde, I hope that you are all well tonight.
Miley, was that a gator or a croc?? I wonder if she will film the next exercise when the reptile has matured a bit and bites off her hand and writ. I don't regret anything said here about Jimmy Carter, that is a matter of individual choice. I can imagine that when Donald Trump dies there will be a torrent of hate from the left. The first time I ever called-in to a talk radio show (it was a local station KDWN -- K-Dawn-- in Las Vegas in the early 80's with a then-local-only libertarian host named Art Bell), I asked him if he thought that had the Iranian hostage rescue attempt (obviously a major fustercluck) been successful, would Carter have been re-elected in 1980.
He paused ... and then said "Yes." I agree, and sadly am glad that rescue attempt failed and gave us President Ronaldus Magnus! Posted by: ShainS -- Eliminate vast bureaucracies of civil servants, no longer servants and no longer civil at December 30, 2024 02:16 AM (z3WOQ) 446
Should have ended that preceding first paragraph with a question mark -- and also have noted that KDWN was 720 AM.

Well, past midnight here, so I am going to hit the sack. Night, Horde.
I read the Wiki article on the sea level canal. As recently as November of this year, president Daniel Ortega was seeking Chinese and American investment money to build a sea level canal. The 1993 concession with China has expired because the Chinese principal has disappeared, LOL. I would not be surprised to see Ortega meet with DJT in furtherance of that project sometime in 2025.
