Howdy, and Happy New Year a wee bit early, Horde!
Son and grandson (who is rising 15 but is already taller than me or his dad) drove up to the farm from Ft. Bragg for a visit and a day of shooting. we fired .22 revolver and semiauto, son's H&K USP .45, my SA35, Tisas Commander clone in 9mm, and my new S&W Model 19 which they really liked. But the guns both absolutely fell in love with were the Single Action Army in .45 Colt, and my old M1 carbine. I told them they better call dibs on them before I kick the bucket, lest they go to another family member! Gun-related conundrum: I am messing with a very odd Chinese Mystery Pistol. It is an oversized copy of an FN model 1901, which is a Browning design. The originals were built to use .32 ACP. This beast was made to chamber and shoot .30 Mauser (7.63 mm). The chamber has been damaged, and won't hold a round stable enough for the firing pin to make a good whack on the primer. Barrel screws into the frame; oddball thread, seems to be 9/16 - 20. Definitely 20 threads per inch, anyway. Probably not metric, but might be an old Whitworth size.
Anyway, I bought a Tokarev TT-33 barrel, the chamber of which will accept the 7.63 Mauser cartridge. I need to make a threaded bushing, about an inch long, that will slip over the Tok barrel, and thread into the frame of the mystery pistol. Happy New Year to the Gun Thread morons!
My round count spreadsheet says I fired 12,899 rounds this year. Always trying to work on something at the range, not just converting money into noise (except for the occasional high-speed mag dump). I am sure a better shooter than I was in January, but I have a long long way to go. I had my first "gun instructor moment" at the range yesterday. Mrs Splunge was shooting poorly at 10 yards with her little S&W .38 Chief's Special. It was very strange, because she was great with it last time. So I examined the gun, and thought about it. Those low-profile sights, designed not to snag on clothing, are hard to see...last range trip was sunny, this one was cloudy...a light bulb went off. I said "Get your reading glasses." 4 of the next 5 shots she made at 10 yards were touching each other, and the fifth was very nearby. She's good with that tiny-barreled thing. As long as she can see the sights properly. Posted by: Splunge at December 29, 2024 07:18 PM (hmKaK) 48
Brought out my new H&K MP5 on its first outing w/ the DMV MGC. We went through 100 rounds very quickly even though the magazines were downloaded to 15 rounds each for three round burst fire and 10 rounds each for full auto. We shot at half size IPSC targets. We're definitely climbing a big learning curve here. At 7 or 10 yards, we're seeing quite a bit of climb when firing three round bursts or full auto. The problem w/ any MG is that you have to feed it a lot. That's because they're really hungry every time you take one to the range.

Range report to go with the picture: Yesterday was our steel silhouette match. 5 half size steel targets, chicken, pigs, turkeys and rams @ 200, 300, 400 and 500 meters. Friday before the match I headed out to get elevation data and record DA, wind, wind direction, etc., all duly recorded.
I used the chronograph to get an idea of what the loads were doing. They weren't great, but, good enough for the match. Or, so I thought. Day of the match, we get two sighter shots at each distance. I noticed one of the guys would hit the large target with his first round, then tag the second. I thought this a great idea and followed suit. The pic above is the second smaller sighter plate @ 400m. In the end, I went 18 for 20. Which was a relief, because after the success @ 1,000 yards, I wanted to have a strong showing to prove to myself the preceding week wasn't a fluke. The two misses I had, one was me, terrible set up on the rifle, the other was a round that was hotter than the others which went over the back of a ram @500 meters. I did get my "big bullet bye" because I barely took out one of the rams @ 500 meters. Had I been shooting something smaller, the ram probably would stayed put. I went to the Chantilly Gun Show this weekend. Turnout was heavy, as expected for this time of year. But talking w/ vendor acquaintances of mine, they said that sales were down compared w/ this time last year. Opinions were split on why: people having a hard time w/ the economy, waiting for prices to drop more because of DJT's re-election, or both. I picked up an S&W Model 39-2 with five magazines and a belt holster for $750 and took them to the range today. I didn't do very well w/ it, but Sharon and SRA blaster both shot it better than I did.

Weasel, I've accomplished one of the goals I set out for myself with the 30.06, which was to be competitive. I think I've done that, though it will take a few more matches before I'm sure.
Next goal: Winning outright. I think that's within reach, but it's going to take a bit of work on my part, hand loads, better rest and a new barrel. I'm also not sure the optics I'm running are quite up to snuff. I may switch to a Nightforce scope with a bit more magnification. Going from 95 to 98 or more is going to take some effort on my part. Then, they did a deal w/ Eon Productions (the producers of the James Bond films) to have it featured in "Tomorrow Never Dies," the upcoming 007 film. The attention drawn to Walther by having the brand new P99 in 007's hands for the action finale of the film literally saved Walther and led to the P99 being adopted as an official sidearm in many European police and militaries. The Hydraulics video shows as US Army Coast Artillery gun on a disappearing carriage! Holy disappearing act, Batman!
The idea was to shield the gun and crew from direct fire from the targeted ships. Almost all ship-mounted guns were high-velocity guns with limited elevation in their turrets. In action the gun is loaded while lowered, is 'popped' up by dropping a counterweight, then the recoil lowers the gun back into loading position while simultaneously raising the counterweight. The US and the British used disappearing coast defense gun carriages for a while before and after the start of the 20th Century. The advent of bomber aircraft ended the life of the disappearing carriage coast gun. There was no overhead cover. They also had limited traverse. The only US disappearing carriage guns used in action were several in the Philippines. They were not used much because they were set-up to fire into Manila Bay; the Japanese mostly avoided their limited arcs of fire. US coast guns built after 1923 were mounted in turrets like those on warships. Overhead cover and more traverse. Posted by: Gref at December 29, 2024 08:08 PM (aBgBM) 135

Posted by: blaster - Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat at December 29, 2024 08:23 PM (QfvaV) I recommend getting your fingerprints done electronically before buying a suppressor, along with a digital photo that meets ATF's requirements per e-Forms. Having both in hand when you buy a suppressor will really speed up the turnaround time w/ ATF from months if you submit paperwork via the mail to days if everything is submitted electronically. Working w/ a dealer that will help you navigating the process is worth paying the extra $$ if you don't have electronic copies of your photo and fingerprints in hand. @134 The only US disappearing carriage guns used in action were several in the Philippines.
Gref, there were disappearing guns just inland on the west side of Oahu (you can still see parts of their embrasures from the Oahu Railway), and even though they were uninstalled early in the war, according to a couple of locals they got off a few rounds. They were all the rage when the whole East Coast wondered where the Spanish Fleet might be in '98, and figured heavily in cartoon action between the wars. It was hard not to think of them when working the old pits at Camp Perry! Posted by: Way,Way Downriver at December 29, 2024 08:32 PM (zdLoL) 173

Did you maybe get a deal because it isn't the latest model which is machined to take an optical sight? I've been seeing handguns on clearance which are apparently now redheaded stepchildren because of that.
Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at December 29, 2024 08:30 PM (bSUYY) Saw that at the Chantilly gun show this weekend. If you're thinking of equipping your pistol w/ a red dot, pay the extra $$ to get a handgun with the cutouts for them already made. Paying extra to have it done custom on a pistol that doesn't have the cuts will wipe all of your savings and then some. Posted by: Ed L at December 29, 2024 08:35 PM (AiJK3) 175

160 ... ".41 Mag is an excellent cartridge for hand loading."
Ain't that the truth. And being a straight wall cartridge you can use the most basic mounted press or hand press for loading. Paco is wise to keep his spent brass for future needs. Saving and scrounging brass is an integral part of the reloading hobby. Sadly, I don't think Lee Precision makes their Classic Loader (whack-a-mole style) in 41 mag. That would be a hoot. I shot my old G48 better than the new G48 with the green dot today. It was thrilling. Made me think it could be a carry gun. Less difficulty concealing than the one with the sight. Cataract surgery in the near future should also improve my sight as my right eye is dominant and have poorer vision in that eye. It just feels right. A few other hurdles to overcome but I think I'm ready.

Hello Morons.
Hope you all had a Merry Christmas. I got some range time in yesterday, with my PSA Micro Dagger. The gun works, it's small but not a sub-compact, with full capacity 15 round magazines...it's pretty legit. But I'm finding it takes more 'work' to run the gun as compared to the slightly larger PSA Dagger. Still thinking that G19 size really is the sweet spot for me, for control and fit in my hand. But if I bear down, the Micro Dagger will work, it just takes more effort. Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards, Buy ammo at December 29, 2024 08:40 PM (xcxpd) 189

For Glock owners who don't have optic-ready mounts on their slides, B&T offers a service to cut your slide to accommodate an Aimpoint Accro P2 red dot sight. To get a whole new slide w/ the Aimpoint Accro already mounted, B&T will charge you $939. If you provide an Aimpoint Accro to B&T, to cost falls to $389. This is available for the Glock 17, 19, 19X,45, 47, and 49. B&T says that the work will take 4-8 weeks.

Way to go on feeling so much more confident! Do You carry pepper spray with you everywhere? It's not really the same as a gun, but it's a similar mindset. If you aren't, please start. And don't put it in your handbag or backpack. Have it in your hand in your pocket when you're out and about. Now, I feel naked without it in my pocket. I am "not allowed" to bring a gun on campus, but that may change on Jan 20, until things calm down around here. But carrying is still not second nature to me. I do carry to Mass and the store and while I'm out and about. It's certainly a mindset. Posted by: nurse ratched at December 29, 2024 09:04 PM (SUzr1) 232
Speaking of reloading, maybe? I have a mystery "vise" that came from a yard sale of the estate of a guy who was a gunsmith, I believe. It is a little aluminum jobbie, fits in the palm of my hand, and has a clap screw to attach it to a table edge. There is a fixed jaw, part of the main frame, and a sliding jaw, fitted with very fine ratchet teeth on its underside. There is a ball-end lever like you might find on an arbor press, and works a cam and pawl to slide the moving jaw closer to the fixed jaw by about 1/8" from whatever position you start at. Starting jaw gap ranges from about a half inch to maybe 1 3/4". Each jaw has a conical divot in it. It looks like it could be used, awkwardly, for seating bullets in revolver cartridges, but I doubt that is its purpose. Only label is: Griml and Brothers, Waco Texas.

Responding to a question about what lessons Trump can take away from Carter, Biden said ‘decency’ and praised Carter’s character.
“Decency. Decency. Decency. Everybody deserves a shot. Everybody,” Biden said. “Can you imagine Jimmy Carter walking by someone who needs something and just keeps walking? M1 Carbines are very very rewarding to shoot. They may give you grief if you have to shoot PLA in quilted winter uniforms, but otherwise they are great.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon That's cool. And rare. Posted by: rickb223 It is indeed. The lever reminds me of a machinist vise. Yeah he was a lousy president and incompetent in the job, but he wasn't a corrupt monster using the state to attack his political enemies and enrich himself. Can't decide which of my CZ-75s I'll be taking on the next trip. Will it be the full size, or the compact? Still in love with these works of the gunsmith's art. Thousands of rounds fired, never a hiccup. And they look gorgeous. Kind of like having a woman who is both intelligent and beautiful.
