A new Chinese AI called DeepSeek V3 outperforms ChatGPT on standard tests while costing a small fraction of the price to train because - apparently - the developers stole the ChatGPT training data. (Tech Crunch)

The evidence for this is that the model is convinced it is ChatGPT.
"Obviously, the model is seeing raw responses from ChatGPT at some point, but it's not clear where that is," Mike Cook, a research fellow at King's College London specializing in AI, told TechCrunch. "It could be 'accidental'... but unfortunately, we have seen instances of people directly training their models on the outputs of other models to try and piggyback off their knowledge."
Cook noted that the practice of training models on outputs from rival AI systems can be "very bad" for model quality, because it can lead to hallucinations and misleading answers like the above. "Like taking a photocopy of a photocopy, we lose more and more information and connection to reality," Cook said.

It's completely open source and user serviceable. Not only can you replace I/O modules as with the Framework laptops, you can replace the CPU itself with any compatible module (like the Raspberry Pi compute modules), and anything else you can find down to the individual cells in the battery pack.

That makes it about 25% larger and heavier - and also a lot slower - than mainstream laptops, but there are plenty of people who just want something that works and keeps working, and is not glued shut and locked down in perpetuity.

444 Those standing rib roasts are on sale from time to time. I just don't know how to cook them.

Wrap it in cheesecloth and let it sit in the fridge for 7 days. Remove from fridge, peel off the cheesecloth, and hit it with a heavy dry brine (salt). Let it sit to come up to room temp for at least an hour. Insert your probe thermometer into the heart of the roast. Sprinkle with any other spices you like (I just added pepper), and put it in a cold oven, setting the temp to 250. When the probe temp reaches 118, pull the roast, wrap it in foil, and let it rest for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, crank the oven to 550. Remove the foil, put the roast back in the oven for a 10-15 minute sear. Slice away the bones, then just carve it into thick, juicy "prime" rib steaks. Enjoy.

Thanks for that knowledge.

I remember when Zicam made a spray, with a warning on it not to squirt it in you nose and snorfle it back like other nasal sprays. People didn't read that, and proceeded to use it incorrectly. Product was taken off the market due to complaints.

But, if used correctly, it worked very well.

Hmmm... sounds like what I've had the past 3 weeks. Mostly post nasal drip, giving me a cough. A few times with the aches I get from having a fever, without the fever.
Yesterday it kinda all came at once, along with dizziness and nausea. That went away, and I finally got a good nights sleep.

I can commiserate with you. I am at the recovery phase: thick nasal goo, wet cough almost gone. It was one of those old-fashioned 3-day colds (not counting recovery phase), a little over a day per nostril.

If your car's engine can take advantage of it -- if, say, your manual says premium is "recommended." My Buick's book says nothing like that, only that 87 octane is required. I tried premium 93 early in the car's tenure, and saw no real improvement over 87 during my regular week's commute.

I wanted the E0 -- which can improve mileage.

Maybe my regimen of better food (no sugar; meat and salad and little bread), plus mineral and vitamin supplements, has helped me skip past other infections.

I nearly had Her Majesty take me to urgent care last night, the pain was so bad. But I took a Gabapentin and had a good night's sleep. It hurts this morning, but it's endurable. If I'm flat on my back or sitting in an armchair the discomfort is greatly reduced.

When I lived in Denver, there were still gas additives on sale in the stores designed to keep water out of your gas and thus freeze your lines. Ethanol would do that too, as you point out. I suppose such additives are still around; I haven't looked to see.

I found out yesterday my long-time mechanic's father, who was a WWII vet in the Pacific theatre, passed away in September at 99 1/2. He told me he was slated to be part of the invasion of the Japanese islands in the early summer of '45. A lot of times in photos of people the hands and feet are not always shown or shown incompletely, for instance when a female model might have her hands on her hips the number of fingers might not be visible.

Generative AI has no idea what a hand is.
It’s just trying to copy what it has been trained on so sometimes the AI might add an extra finger or toe because it doesn’t know we only have five digits, it just knows a hand-like appendage goes on the end of arms.

The newer AI image generator models were trained more thoroughly and don’t have this problem now.

Yup, feet were very difficult for early AI because, as you can imagine, most photos of humans the people are wearing shoes.

It really threw the earlier AI for a loop because they essentially had to guess at what a real foot looked like from every angle.

I believe they train the newer AIs with lots of pics of bare hands and feet so they won’t screw up.

Maybe next time someone will fake UFO's over Jersey and claim they've taken over. There's a certain segment of the population that right now would believe it.
