That map on the wall -- that's what they knew of the New World in 1657? Or maybe it's an older map, and a newer one would be hard (read: $$$ [or guilders, I guess]) to come by.

78 The Map. From Wikipedia: Officer and Laughing Girl is one of several paintings in which Vermeer depicted maps or globes. The map that hangs on the wall in this painting is identifiable as a Willem Blaeu – Balthasar Florisz van Berckenrode map of Holland and West Friesland, which Vermeer must have owned, as he used it in three of his paintings. Peter van der Krogt wrote that "Vermeer's gift for realism is evidenced by the fact that the wall map, mounted on linen and wooden rods, is identifiable as Blaeu's 1621 map ... He captures all of its characteristic design, decoration, and geographic content."

Repost
In German Prisoner-of-War camps, escapes were a a major problem, so they would try to break the prisoners’ spirits by making them do mindless things. In particular, they would make the prisoners stand in a line and all move their heads like a clock back and forth and say, ‘tick tock tick tock.’

Some prisoners, unable to escape or otherwise change their situation, chose a very subtle rebellion. They would do the head motions, but instead of ‘tick tock tick tock’, they would wait until the guards were further down the line and switch to ‘tick tick tick.’

None of the guards noticed this was going on for many months, until finally, a young lieutenant was caught ticking by a senior SS Captain walking behind the line.
The captain stopped the exercise, walked over, face-to-face with the young man, and “A rebel. Vell, don’t vorry, ve have vays of making you tock.’

138 Johannes Vermeer, "despite being an esteemed painter of the times, he had to suffer the effects of war as much as everyone else did. Towards the end of his career and life, he had accumulated a huge debt, especially from loans granted by a baker, Hendrick van Buyten, who had possession of the paintings as indemnity. The destitution suffered by Johannes, and the burden of providing for a family of eleven children, ultimately led to this genius' depression and subsequent death."

Never trust a baker.

202 Lots of stories like the one in the MR about the Democrat brand being in big trouble are seriously overstated.

Close to half the electorate still voted for them even after all the horrible behavior of the last ten years, and the mushy middle broke for Trump because of the economy.

The sad fact is that is that if - and it's a bigger if than ever before - his administration can deliver on the economy and meaningfully improve it, those people will just get comfortable enough to come back home to the Democrats.

We've got four, and maaaaybe eight years til they are back in power, and in the meantime, they still have enough Dems and GOPe in both houses to stymie the legislative agenda. They also still control the Deep State. All we've got is Trump and his cabinet.

They are far from "toxic" enough to be written off. They absolutely *will* be formally in charge of everything again, and soon.

That's why I say this administration should not fret too much about policy. The main focus needs to be political warfare in the institutions. Spend four to eight years loosening their grip on them as much as possible and putting MAGATs in position to undermine them in the future.

236 >>Close to half the electorate still voted for them even after all the horrible behavior of the last ten years, and the mushy middle broke for Trump because of the economy.

The issue for Democrats is where those votes are located. It doesn't make a bit of difference if Democrats run up the vote in California and a handful of other deep blue states which is exactly what they do. Not just because they are overwhelmingly Democrat but because they cheat. As long as the electoral college is in play they need to appeal to a much broader audience and their policies don't.

I absolutely disagree that the only thing people voted on was the economy. Poll after poll showed Americans do not like illegal immigration and the insane social policies being pushed by Democrats.

The country has a myriad of problems and not all of them are economic. Not only did Democrats not solve them, their policies caused many of them. If Trump and team can make real progress on restoring the country there's no reason to think we can't see many years of Republican leadership. We have a great bench, Democrats have nobody.

245 Feb 2024: As another presidential election cycle looks set to be dominated by discussions of age and mental fitness, an opinion piece for The Hill published on Sunday suggested that President Joe Biden could be a "superager," citing doctors who evaluated the president's medical history.

Writing for The Hill in an opinion piece published Sunday, titled, "Is Joe Biden a superager?", medical experts S. Jay Olshansky and Dr. Bradley Willcox, as well as former Texas Lieutenant Governor Ben Barnes, argued that the basic facts of Biden's age might be "the wrong questions to ask." Instead, the piece posits that, based on the available information about the president's health and mental fitness, he might be what is known as a "superager," a subgroup of the elderly who retain the acuity of people decades younger well into their 80s.

Posted by: Lizzy at December 30, 2024 10:24 AM (u1uWe)

246 “228 They are far from "toxic" enough to be written off. They absolutely *will* be formally in charge of everything again, and soon.”

I disagree - American political history is the record of periods of crisis followed by virtual one party control for 50 or 60 years following. After the Civil War, the Republican Party ran things with only brief breaks until 1912, and regained power in the 20’s. After the Depression and WW2, Democrats and Deep State ran things until Reagan. Now we’re at the end of a 30 year cold civil war, and things are about to stabilize.

The House makeup hasn't changed all that much after the election and they are the people who vote on the Speaker's job, not Trump and not us. Getting rid of Johnson means someone has to replace him before anything happens in the House.

We'd all love to see a much more conservative Speaker who follow normal order and passes spending bills on time, etc.. But they have to win virtually every Republican Rep in Congress because Jeffries has already said that Democrats will vote no on Johnson.

So if not Johnson who and show how they win.
