Javi Milei Defunds the Bureaucrats Tasked with Reducing Violence Against Women and Yet the Murder Rate of Women Somehow Drops 10% Anyway

You probably call him "Javier," but I'm on a nickname basis with Javi.

As you probably know, Javi was deemed a "far-right" figure by the far-left media. But then he moved Argentina's economy out of a deep recession, and CNN stopped calling him "far right" so as not to give credit to any "far right" figures. Now he's "libertarian."

The key to this Unexpected Growth was Javi's slashing of the inflation rate largely by cutting government spending, of course:

When Javi said "afuera" to the Undersecretariat of Special Programmes against Gender-based Violence, everyone in the far left media said that violence against women would increase, because we all know that if you fund a government program for a purpose, that purpose is always achieved on-time and under-budget.

And yet, despite cutting funding for the Undersecretariat of Special Programmes against Gender-based Violence, the murder rate of women did not climb as all rational truth-tellers predicted.

In fact, it fell by 10%.

How can this be?!?!

My shocked face was last seen wearing a smoking jacket and sipping brandy.

2024 saw a 10% increase in un-murdered women even though the defunct ministry had an Undersecretariat of Special Programmes against Gender-based Violence, if you can imagine such a thing. The since-fired Undersecretariat must be incredibly disappointed to learn that her job had been phony-baloney all along.

What did happen after Milei closed the Ministry was that he also adopted a tough-on-crime posture. According to a translation of Milei's announcement, "The decrease is attributed to a zero-tolerance policy on violent offenders, not bureaucratic spending or activist-driven initiatives." By some stroke of luck, cracking down on crime resulted in less crime. Lefties worldwide are scratching their heads at the news.

Carter and Trump both showed up in DC with no insiders on board. They were easy targets for the experienced politicos to manipulate.

- Punishment, time in the clink, chain gain, stocks, whatever; and
- Restitution

When punishment is done comes the eye-for-an-eye phase.

Theft and robbery, no matter how 'minor', merit summary execution by the victim if perp caught in the act. If the perp gets away they should seek protective custody and a speedy fair trial before the victim catches up to them (or contracts it out).

The sad thing about this is that the hard-wired telephone systems were extremely resilient. Back-up power; switches were in hardened "central offices" made to be bomb-proof. The phones would work even when the power went out. Most modern hard wired phone traffic now travels over internet (IP) infrastructure the same as your internet. Cell phones obviously work only as long as the cell towers maintain power (though most towers do have on-site generators), or wi-fi calling if you have powered home internet, and of course the traffic travels over data networks as well. So our basic telecom infrastructure is less survivable, or at least it seems that way to me.

This brings up the appeal of direct-to-satellite connections in ordinary cell phones -- a way to connect even if you are in an area where all hell has broken loose, without paying hefty $ for a separate satphone.

There are some places like that - Egypt for example - but most of the spending is just a way to funnel money back to the bureaucrats and their friends in DC.

Many districts in Texas and Louisiana are now essentially one party districts; the issue is decided in the primary, which in Texas is set by the Republican Establishment. In my district, the incumbent ran unopposed. I actually like Louisiana's unusual election laws, they make it a little bit easier to shake things up in the primary. I found the spam calls stopped shortly into the COVID lockdowns.

See India wasn't letting the spam callers go to their offices.

And then once India relaxed their lockdowns they started up again.

Yes. Starlink is deploying "direct to cell" capability on the latest satellites. I think they have enough of them up there to make it fully operational, a full "cluster" or whatever.

It's still in the experimental stages, but it works. Bandwidth will never be as good as the dedicated Starlink terminals with the proper antenna, but it's enough for voice and text.

With direct-to-cell, the satellites act directly as cell towers. Currently, this has to work through the existing carriers (they have to sign off on it), but I think this is more a regulatory/licensing/software thing. The Starlink system could act as it's own carrier if it wanted to do.

When you think about it, its amazing a little cell phone can communicate with a satellite. They are very low orbit though, and moving so fast, you have to the hand-off system where a new satellite can takeover when the current one zips out of view.

When Helene ripped through here, power was out for 6 days and 10 hours here (we were luxury compared to Western NC, though).

The local cell tower went down. It had battery back-up, but that was good for only a while. Some have generators, and with other ones deemed more important, they'll send generator trucks in. They didn't with the one closest here.

Data didn't work for several days, and even voice and text got spotty until they finally got the power back on the main line by the tower. The tower got power a couple days before we did here.
