One thing I was thinking about before this thread is how death seems to be more common and come much more suddenly then before.
Yes I'm older as are the people I know - but in 4 years my personal circle of people's grief announcements went from "a grandparent or older parent died after a long battle with an illness" to "oh someone in the 40s or 50s with no known health issues died...suddenly." Years ago I was flying with my GF who was wearing white pants.
She had the outside seat. There was still traffic in the aisle as people got on and standing next to her was a guy with a full to the brim cup of coffee*. He couldn't move forward to his seat because someone further down was slowly putting his luggage above. And then a person behind coffee guy decided to put his bag in the overhead and because he wasn't paying enough attention, banged heavily into coffee guy who then spilled his coffee all over my GF and her white pants. I give the stewardess credit she ran and grabbed paper towels and stuff but it was a pretty shitty way to start a flight. *why the hell would you bring that on a plane? Evening all. I am happy that Jules and my Dad aren't listed above.
Dad has been in the hospital and rehab since Sept 16. He is now in a nice place which happens to be run by a lady that used to date the owner of the rural bar he used to frequent. She is looking out for him, a great relief as I can't be there due to Jules. Her recovery is remarkable. After surgery for a perforated ulcer, which caused severe septic shock, they said the next 48-72 hrs will tell whether she lives or dies. After 49 days in the hospital she went to rehab yesterday! Many thanks for all the prayers from here. I truly believe they helped. Posted by: Farmer, with his own historical take at December 28, 2024 10:43 PM (55Qr6) 135

I ran across a video by one Hank Green discussing populism and by extension Trump here: https://tinyurl.com/2x5tv6ax
I give him some credit for trying to understand Trump/populism in more depth then just screaming Hitler over and over. And the video gets off to a bad start when he discusses radio and Father Coughlin. But he pretty quickly gets to his point which is that populism takes off when a new form of media is developed, and he actually spends more of his time discussing the printing press and Martin Luther. Basically, the problem is that populism is a way too broad a brush that tears down institutions that maybe need reforming but where the destruction is worse then the corruption that predated it, and he clearly takes this back then to Trump and our current round of populism. And two things scream out right away. 1) Why is it Luther...or Trump's...fault if the elites fail to heed calls for reform and not those same elites? Nominally those elites, if they do care about the supposed society they are guiding should be at least as concerned as Luther or Trump...no? Posted by: 18-1 at December 28, 2024 10:45 PM (oZhjI) 140

The lady down the hall from our apartment lost her 30 year old son early this fall. The police say it looks like he had a car issue, pulled off to fix it, and the jack collapsed, killing him instantly. Just a month ago, my oldest daughters in-laws brother passed away at the gym. Dead before he hit the floor. Scary how things like this happen to young people while Himself and I just keep on keeping on.

I got the Hank Green video on populism after watching one he did on the drones over NJ. His argument there was it was probably a nothingburger where media reports of drones has gotten a bunch of people that don't normally look in the night sky to now be looking for "strange things" and seeing planes, helicopters, and yes normal everyday drones not doing anything nefarious. He also referenced a similar drone scare in CO in 2019 that just sort of tailed off to nothing with an almost certain semi-explanation that a military base there was running a drone test at one point...
Which is close to my opinion, except, here clearly the government knows exactly what the actual drones are - hell the NYPD recovered one. The fact they aren't rushing to say who is operating them tells me it is pretty clear they are. Posted by: 18-1 at December 28, 2024 11:09 PM (oZhjI) 191

A friend of mine, in a discussion on this, pointed out that these elites didn't care about the corruption and abuse they were causing because it largely didn't effect them. For example COVID gave the bureaucracy work from home and the oligarchs an excuse to ban normies from their haunts. >> How will the oceans rise 9 inches in some locations and 3 inches in other? Is water lumpy due to global warmening?
That was worded very sloppy, and the author who wrote that skins his ignorance. But yep, the ideal free surface of water on the Erf would be lumpy, due to the lumpiness of the mass distribution (deviation from nice spherical or other smooth symmetry). The "sea level" surface would be a "geoid", or a surface of constant gravitational (and centrifugal) potential. And it would be lumpy. They also define reference "ellipsoids" which are smooth surface approximation of the surface, or levels of the Erf. You can then talk about the difference between the geoid and the ellipsoid at some point. It's a complicated mess, but yep, sea level would be lumpy relative to a refernence ellipsoid. It's the geoid and the geopotential surface that determines local level and plumb. And it will deviate a bit from the geometic level and normal (terms of an ellipsoid, or even a spherical approximation, which is a good first approximation). It was until satellites where the local 'g' could be measured to high precision that the earth's lumpy gravity was mapped out. Turned out this was responsible for an error in the definition of the prime meridian back in the day. They set the transit at the Royal Observatory to true plumb/vertical to amazing precision. But that deviated from a radius passing through the center of the earth by a smidge. The result was the actual prime meridian was about 100 yards or so to the east of where they thought. Both lines are marked there now, I think. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at December 29, 2024 12:29 AM (w6EFb) 365

Lovely post.
The feelings and sentiments expressed by the post are real, and they remind us of the profound sadness that remains in the hearts of the living when loved ones are departed. Unfortunately, the personal feelings we have when someone near and dear dies, the genuine longing and heartache that we endure during mourning, are almost entirely anathema to our outward world view. Because in our wicked hearts we empathize not in the least with unknown peoples throughout the world that surely suffer in the same way as we do when it is personal. We don't care for the Syrian, the Palestinian, the Russian, or any other individual that we dehumanize. They aren't human. They have no feelings. They deserve death. And we spend trillions of dollars to assure that they die. And we raise our children with the same desire to kill, and pass along our hatred for mankind. And we tell them they will be heroes, make us proud, if they will kill people they've never met for reasons they'll never know. Posted by: Vlad at December 29, 2024 12:39 AM (MvBss) 377

I just don't see that weather happening noww. Posted by: JM in Ill -- Behold the Manchurian Candidate at December 29, 2024 12:16 AM (ywTo I have to agree that it's definitely warmer in some areas. I don't live where I grew up but I know they do not have the winters I had as a young 'un. Regular 6 to 8 inch snows. A few nor'easter blizzards. Now dustings or a blizzard. All or nothing. Even in NYC, we don't get the snows now we got in the early '80s. 3 to 4 inch snows were common, often not melting right away. Now we hadly get snow and if we do, it's a double digit nor'easter blizzard. All or nothing. As a non-weather guy, it seems like we don't get the powdery snow from the west as much, but a more moisture-laden southern storm/blizzard, with heavy snow. That's a pattern I noticed about two decades ago, more southern snow, not western snow. Whatever that means. As someone who’s worked with a lot of H1Bs and offshore programmers: it’s a scam. Most are pitifully mediocre. It takes a dozen guys working six months to do what I can do in two weeks.
Some are good. And most domestic engineers also suck. And there is a shortage of skilled American programmers. But mostly we’re just importing mediocre engineers for less pay because there’s also a shortage of mediocre engineers. The system is broken. I’m all for strong economy but anyone who prioritizes “line go up” GDP over quality of life and quality engineering is wrong. Many of the H1Bs I’ve worked with are great humans, but they still have no right to be here. America for Americans only. Posted by: Nuke The Hippies at December 29, 2024 01:57 AM (FC8SQ) 448

Immigration has been abused so badly that we can no longer talk about fine-tuning a points-system etcetera. We must say that there will be no immigration, work visas, new citizens whatsoever.

Where was an ounce of this anger when democrats talked openly about fucking throwing him in jail? Where was the anger that they fined him for billions, and sued him for complying with defense contract laws? "We won't reach Mars (under democrats)" well I would have thought that might rouse that famous temper of yours, Elon. Are we going to Mars or not? I have no idea what prompted Elon to say what he did on Twitter. He had been the object of relentless attacks from leftists since he purchased Twitter. Maybe he was just having on of those days on the internet and was fed up and snapped back. It does happen. He's a billionaire, not an angel.

It's over H1b visas.
Elon and Trump think we need a bunch of them and are mad at those that disagree. Posted by: Erebus- Ex Killer Whale at December 29, 2024 03:39 AM (elaR+) - 1. Yes, a lot of blatant racism from conservative commenters sure did pop up in many places when the H1B discussion began. 2. Define "a bunch of them." Do you doubt that the US is currently behind in upper level engineering? We all know what "Ivy League" universities have been vomiting out for the last 20-40 years. There is a dire need for the brightest of people to come on board and help US companies excel. And it's not only about companies. It's very much about military technologies. Be careful what you don't ask for. 3. Trump and Musk are no more or less "mad" at those who disagree than those who disagree are "mad" at Trump and Musk. In fact, it's from that latter that the racist remarks are boiling to the surface. Try reading all of Musk's comments together and think exactly what's in his total view of totally revamping the H1B program that's to the detriment of the US economy and excellence. I've been enjoying the H1B kerfuffle because it is something the left would never tolerate, people speaking their mind. It got out of hand here and there, there was some axe grinding, and some lefty concern trolls not unlike those that visit us but better quality . But in general lots of good points made and some common ground found. Short this is what real debate is about, messy sometimes but a damned bit better than the coordinated NPC crap that we see so often from the pod people.

Posted by: bear with asymmetrical balls at December 29, 2024 04:01 AM (2+SeL) - That's a pity. The solution isn't more racism. The solution is a moral America, intolerant of those who don't tolerate that. It makes no difference whether America adds to its best and brightest from Scandinavia or from Asia. In certain areas, America needs selective help to regain its dominance. BTW, discrimination against whites goes much further back than 20 years. I remember it when I entered the US work force in the 80s. It's merit that counts, not skin color or culture. OK, I see people are flipping out over the H-1B visa program, calling people 'racist' over it, or whatever.
Don't think I would ever call a country racist over their visa program, nevermind a narrow sub-set of a country's visa program or policy. Seems suspect that anyone would get fired up over this program. This is not Operation Paperclip. Getting the objectively best and brightest by hoovering up anyone and everyone probably serves poorer country diploma mills more than it benefits the USA. // probably dead thread now anyway Posted by: Itinerant Alley Butcher at December 29, 2024 04:42 AM (/lPRQ) 473
The list of non-Horde names of those who passed in 2024 is staggering. Every few names brings to mind a sports figure, a voice, a movie, a book read, a comedian, a sports commentator, or one of the many other countless ways that someone has touched our lives in the past. They are gone, forever gone, but as long as they live in memory their legacy lives on.
