Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas, Horde. For those of you who observe Hanukkah (which, in an unusual but not too rare congruence, also starts tonight), Happy Hanukkah. For those of you who are in interfaith households, both!

It has been a year of ups and downs, but I hope everyone reading today is having a nice holiday and is in the midst of joy. Please enjoy a Christmas open thread and some nice performances of Christmas music between, I hope, spending time with loved ones, cooking and eating, exchanging gifts and praising G-d as we end the year! I am as always both proud and constantly astonished to be a part of the community we have here at the HQ. For those who are checking in on this holiday, once again, Merry Christmas! There's a charming poem - too long to put here - about their dog, left to tend the flock while the shepherds visit the Christ Child. The shepherds return, too dazed with wonder at what they've seen to thank the dog. But the Lord tells him, "Well done, good faithful servant."

Nog is pretty darn easy. Fiddly at parts, but easy. Eggs (separated), sugar, milk, cream, and alcohol. See link in nic for ideas, but my favorite is still the Southern Eggnog from The Spice Cookbook (available on the Internet Archive):

For every four servings:

1 egg, separated; 4 tsp sugar; 1/6 cup Bourbon or rye whisky, brandy, or other spirits to taste; 3 tsp rum; 1/3 cup milk; ½ cup heavy cream; nutmeg

Beat egg yolks until thick and lemon-colored. Gradually beat in sugar. Stir in desired spirits and rum. Cover and chill several hours or overnight. Just before serving, stir in milk, whip the cream and fold in, and beat the egg whites to soft peaks and fold in. Garnish with nutmeg.

I'm on pins and needles. That was a singularly expensive piece of meat and I also *really* don't wanna ruin Christmas dinner! The potatoes are already done and it's too early for the vegetables, so nothing to do but chew my knuckles.

The EU has mandated USB-C to make sure that you only have to take two stabs at it, and incidentally making it impossible to find a charger that fits your old equipment.
I think they did this in revenge for the foiling of their attempt to legislate the correct curvature for bananas eligible to be sold in the European Union.

Try 1: You’re not really sure which way it goes, so you don’t try very hard. It doesn’t go in, so you flip it.
Try 2: No matter how hard you try, it doesn’t go in. It was right the first time.
Try 3: Flip it again, knowing this is the correct way. Confidence makes a difference; this pattern happens in a lot of places where there are two orientations for plugs.

This is why Lightning was popular before USB-C, and why cords are switching to USB-C on both sides of the cable.

Pro tip (seriously): pick up some USB type-C "decoy" boards. They have a Power Delivery (PD) circuit controller and a button to set it to any standard USB-C voltage standard (5v, 9v, 12v, 15v, 20v). USB port on one side, screw terminals or solder pads on the other. You can USB-ify almost anything with a barrel plug unless it uses a weird voltage or needs a ton of juice.

They could be misinserted. The concentric connectors I’m familiar with were for power. They looked like universal connectors, but they weren’t: they had polarity. Which meant that while you could use the adaptor for one device for another device, you had to not just make sure the voltage was correct, but also the polarity.

If there was ever a standard for those connectors, neither I nor the manufacturers whose products I bought were aware of it.

The BBC banned it - the melancholy tone was feared bad for morale - and many veterans found it very depressing and tried to avoid it after the war, as it brought back memories they were trying to shed (such as the Battle of the Bulge, for a large number).

KC, Kansas is sorta dirty and industrial. I'm sure people live there, but if you're driving east to west, you get to metro Kansas City, Missouri, and it looks like a city. Lots of shopping areas, people milling about, then you get to the sports complex and see where the baseball and football teams play. You go around some curves, and get to downtown.

Then before you know it, you're in Kansas. And after a few miles, you're in the middle of nowhere.

Gotta admit, having looked at some of those photos, the ones from D-Day, where men are lying in the water, or in the Pacific, washing up onto the beaches... I always wondered if the people who knew them saw those photos.

Did they know their son/husband whatever, had died? Is this how they found out?

200 I was out and about, and one of the Walgreens stores was open. They keep one of our three open for pharmacy but also if someone needs a little something to complete a dinner. Like a six dollar bottle of mustard or a four dollar quart of milk. Proud of their merchandise they are. Didn't go I but the parking lot was packed.
