Too late for the last thread, but someone was asking about stories about the shepherds. There's a charming poem - too long to put here - about their dog, left to tend the flock while the shepherds visit the Christ Child. The shepherds return, too dazed with wonder at what they've seen to thank the dog. But the Lord tells him, "Well done, good faithful servant." When Paul reached Antioch in Pisidia and entered the synagogue,
he stood up, motioned with his hand, and said, “Fellow Israelites and you others who are God-fearing, listen. The God of this people Israel chose our ancestors and exalted the people during their sojourn in the land of Egypt. With uplifted arm he led them out of it. Then he removed Saul and raised up David as king; of him he testified, ‘I have found David, son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will carry out my every wish.’ From this man’s descendants God, according to his promise, has brought to Israel a savior, Jesus. John heralded his coming by proclaiming a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel; and as John was completing his course, he would say, ‘What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. Behold, one is coming after me; I am not worthy to unfasten the sandals of his feet.’” Posted by: Brad at December 25, 2024 11:11 AM (oOc/o) 17

No nog to be had in my little town...wife says she has a recipe...we'll see.
Nog is pretty darn easy. Fiddly at parts, but easy. Eggs (separated), sugar, milk, cream, and alcohol. See link in nic for ideas, but my favorite is still the Southern Eggnog from The Spice Cookbook (available on the Internet Archive): For every four servings: 1 egg, separated; 4 tsp sugar; 1/6 cup Bourbon or rye whisky, brandy, or other spirits to taste; 3 tsp rum; 1/3 cup milk; ½ cup heavy cream; nutmeg Beat egg yolks until thick and lemon-colored. Gradually beat in sugar. Stir in desired spirits and rum. Cover and chill several hours or overnight. Just before serving, stir in milk, whip the cream and fold in, and beat the egg whites to soft peaks and fold in. Garnish with nutmeg. Try 1: Youre not really sure which way it goes, so you dont try very hard. It doesnt go in, so you flip it. Try 2: No matter how hard you try, it doesnt go in. It was right the first time. Try 3: Flip it again, knowing this is the correct way. Confidence makes a difference; this pattern happens in a lot of places where there are two orientations for plugs. This is why Lightning was popular before USB-C, and why cords are switching to USB-C on both sides of the cable. Posted by: Stephen Price Blair at December 25, 2024 11:32 AM (EXyHK) 68

They have a Power Delivery (PD) circuit controller and a button to set it to any standard USB-C voltage standard (5v, 9v, 12v, 15v, 20v). USB port on one side, screw terminals or solder pads on the other. You can USB-ify almost anything with a barrel plug unless it uses a weird voltage or needs a ton of juice. They could be misinserted. The concentric connectors Im familiar with were for power. They looked like universal connectors, but they werent: they had polarity. Which meant that while you could use the adaptor for one device for another device, you had to not just make sure the voltage was correct, but also the polarity. If there was ever a standard for those connectors, neither I nor the manufacturers whose products I bought were aware of it. Posted by: Stephen Price Blair at December 25, 2024 11:41 AM (EXyHK) 90

They could be misinserted. The concentric connectors I’m familiar with were for power. They looked like universal connectors, but they weren’t: they had polarity. Which meant that while you could use the adaptor for one device for another device, you had to not just make sure the voltage was correct, but also the polarity.
If there was ever a standard for those connectors, neither I nor the manufacturers whose products I bought were aware of it. Posted by: Stephen Price Blair at December 25, 2024 11:41 AM (EXyHK) I would call that "mis-applied", not mis-inserted. Like using an HP power brick with an IBM laptop. I was thinking more of quarter-inch phone jacks, and RCA jacks, and their mating plugs. Both about a hundred years old, or more. I'll Be Home for Christmas, sung by Bing Crosby, was released in 1943, was a bittersweet song about soldiers and sailors being far from home during WWII. It became a huge hit both with the public and the forces - was the most requested song for the USO events, and was distributed by the military for the forces overseas.
The BBC banned it - the melancholy tone was feared bad for morale - and many veterans found it very depressing and tried to avoid it after the war, as it brought back memories they were trying to shed (such as the Battle of the Bulge, for a large number). Lots of shopping areas, people milling about, then you get to the sports complex and see where the baseball and football teams play. You go around some curves, and get to downtown. Then before you know it, you're in Kansas. And after a few miles, you're in the middle of nowhere. Posted by: BurtTC at December 25, 2024 12:36 PM (l7SiO) 180

Patience, Weasel-san.
Fortunately our annual Christmas thing at my sister's is a fantastic if simple food event, and is never marred by politix or the like (which it could be, given the .... well). And it's genuinely good to see the nephews and niece et al, as I don't see them much. Posted by: rhomboid at December 25, 2024 12:37 PM (1m82a) 182

Some Silent Nights...
Pentatonix - Silent Night (Live) Pentatonix is an a cappella quintet. For those of you that don't speak Spanish "a cappella" means they don't use guitars and "quintet" means five. https://youtu.be/sme8N2pzRx8 The Three Tenors - Silent Night (Live) Tres tipos gordos also singing without guitars but with an orchestra. https://youtu.be/WjhVI4Q0Vfc Gerry Rafferty - Silent Night This was the last song on his last album. There is something poignant in that. https://youtu.be/tHsREPHqzBg Lady Antebellum - Silent Night (Live) Finally we have a very American version and it has some guitars. For those of you that only speak Spanish that means Nashville. https://youtu.be/xx7sLISpkUQ Posted by: Altaria Pilgram at December 25, 2024 12:39 PM (Q8Bj8) 185
Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah. Wave one in the books. Prime rib in the oven, wife napping, kids at the gym. We are hosting this year, 17 fam members. Fun chaos.

I have a love/hate relationship with I'll Be Home for Christmas. During the 20 years I drove over the road, I think I was able to make it home 2 times. But I can really appreciate the sentiment.

Old Blue, that's been the reaction to that song since it was released. Especially at the time and especially among the people in the service whose situation was the subject of the song.

I was out and about, and one of the Walgreens stores was open. They keep one of our three open for pharmacy but also if someone needs a little something to complete a dinner. Like a six dollar bottle of mustard or a four dollar quart of milk. Proud of their merchandise they are. Didn't go I but the parking lot was packed.

I think the dead Marines at Tarawa in November '43 was the first imagery of US KIA allowed to be published. Think FDR himself approved it (unless memory is misfiring). Had a pretty impact on the public.

True story
In England a Sgt wasn't going to have a beer until it was noon but basically was sitting around just waiting for noon. So I formulated a plan to distracted him, got others in on it and got him out of room and changed his clock back in small amounts so he wouldn't notice. I think it was around 12:45 until he figured it out Posted by: Skip at December 25, 2024 12:47 PM (fwDg9) 206

It is absolutely critical that government is staffed with reasonably decent people without control freak issues or hysteria. Genuine Diversity of thought, not simply skin tone or sexual perversions.
Much of what was and is being perpetrated on Americans is also naturally highly fucking illegal six ways to Sunday. Everyone has had quite enough, thank you very much, and the left’s more recent mustering of mindless mobs to target infrastructure along with hordes of foreign nationals bum rushing the border to overwhelm our systems is fucking treason. I don’t know who to hate, but they need to Hang. Posted by: Common Tater at December 25, 2024 01:07 PM (GbLWf) 213
