Music Thread: Random Cuts From Random Bands

Christmascrocs.jpg
[Found outside of Garrett's kitchen, next to a bowl of Grape Nuts]

Who knew The Ramones did a Christmas song!

To me The Ramones are the quintessential rock band. They never took themselves seriously, had an absolute blast, and their music was punchy and loud and short.

U2 they ain't, and thank God for that!

***

I thought I used this song recently, but my exhaustive search (10 seconds) revealed nothing!

The Uninvited The Moment That Matters

***

Another band that is fun in small doses, but gets repetitive and grating in larger doses.

Buckwheat Zydeco Ya Ya

***

Speaking of irritating...

Bob Dylan Shelter from the Storm

You either love him or hate him. I do both...his early stuff is grand but his later stuff awful.

***

MisHum introduced me to these folks. Solid musicians and, while I am not a huge fan of comedic songs, this is a pretty good one.

***

Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen Hot Rod Lincoln

***

I was never a fan of Joy Division, and these guys are...um...sort of the same, but better?

New Order Age of Consent

Is my theme "Small Doses?"

***

Traffic is light, so there may not be a critical mass of people to power a rambunctious and wide-ranging discussion of the music. So have at it...as long as it is happy! It's a lighthearted time slot...we have tons of time to discuss weighty stuff.

Happy New Year everyone!

10 Just for the record, "Hot Rod Lincoln" is a cover, and pretty good one, too. Charley Ryan recorded the original, and based it upon an actual incident, with an actual hot rod Model A that he built, using a Lincoln V12 engine. Charley is gone, but his Hot Rod Lincoln still exists.

Some of his acoustic stuff, it takes a lot of work to emulate and sound right, like a lot of hit makers. Distinctive tone.

54 Once you drill down a bit on playing Dylan tunes, you’ll recognize that Columbia had a session musician play “Don’t think Twice”, a guy named Bruce Langhorne. Bob was a good fingerstyle guitarist. Not that good though.

Bruce used to walk around with a giant Tambourine. He was the “Tambourine Man”. This is a really fun tune to play on guitar. It’s “easy” - but it ain’t. Takes practice to sound really right.

Anytime you hear someone say a certain tune is “easy”, a good chance they sound like shit.

58 On the music movie note, I relatively recently watched Almost Famous for the first time. I thought it was pretty darn good except for the groupie age thing which unfortunately is accurate.

The new music was spot on for the period, too. Not surprising as it was written by Nancy Wilson, possibly Ann Wilson, and Peter Frampton. There’s a CD of the “Stillwater” music (six complete songs—only Fever Dogs was played for any length of time in the movie) that is worth listening to. I think some of the special edition soundtracks also include them.

If “Fever Dogs” had been introduced in 1973, it would have been a hit. It would probably have been a hit in 2001 if there had been any “formats” left to play it on.

When his engine roared, they called the highway Thunder Road.
Sometimes into Asheville, sometimes Memphis town
The revenoors chased him but they couldn’t run him down

He’d go by like they were standin’ still on that Thunder Road…”

69 New Order was basically the 3 guys left from Joy Division after Ian Curtis (lead singer and major songwriter contributor) committed suicide. You can hear where the music was going in the JD song “Love Will Tear Us Apart” but Ian’s vocal style was much more “dark” let’s say - when Bernard Sumner (the guitarist) took over lead vocal duties it was a much more neutral (if not happy) sound - New Order’s first single was Blue Monday and was the best selling record ever for their label - which by virtue of production costs lost money on every unit sold - if one likes this kind of music at all there is a great movie called “24 Hour Party People” which chronicles this time in the Manchester scene.

72 Joy Division was great, if you wanted the "life is meaningless and painful" vibe. Seriously, they did it better than anyone. New Order was kind of meh for me. They knew how to have a great bassline and then, uh, put stuff on it.

The Ramones were SO much better than The Clash. The Clash should have been called The Trash and then been thrown into a can for same.

Bob Dylan has had his highs and lows. I guess he's one of those guys whose highs excuse his lows. Considering he's been at this for over 60 years and is still going, he's earned a bit of slack. That said, he's not my favorite songwriter.

Best band to come out of the UK in the last 40 years is Wire. I will fight for this.

90 79 (Nurse) - not to be that guy - but hell I’m knee deep in it now - Love & Rockets are the 3 guys from Bauhaus who went off on their own because they couldn’t stand Peter Murphy anymore (and L&R were Tones On Tail before they were L&R).

Peter Murphy had a pretty decent solo career; L&R did very well (and Daniel Ash and David J both had not crappy solo albums).

But their work in Bauhaus remains the pinnacle of their artistic achievement IMO.

93 My phone is great. Seeing the posts about Hot Rod Lincoln kicked an actual functional brain cell that told me I really wanted to listen to Fire Lake by Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band. I simply picked up my phone, punched in some numbers, twidled with a couple of buttons, and Voila! instant Fire Lake.

Steve Jobs may have been an a-hole on an epic scale but he did understand that I needed a few dozen juke boxes with me at all times.

The third member of that family besides raccoons and ringtails is the Coati, and that one is primarily Mexican and Central American. People keep them as pets, and they’ve got a reputation as much kinder, gentler raccoons.

199 Why I hate the current era college football. Louisiana Tech is 5-7. They are in this bowl game against Army because the conference champions (Conf USA, I think), Marshall, who at 10-3, had a pretty good season, pulled out of this bowl game. It seems the coach left for another job and 30+ members of the Marshall football team went into the portal. So, a depleted team, just like that. Damn shame for Marshall. Not exactly a huge school and Huntington WV has seen better days. This would have been a boost for them.

200 "Cow Cow" was by Benny Carter, one of the Wilberforce Collegians. There are at least a couple of members who could lay a claim to "inventor of rock and roll," and what with the Hendersons, there's little opposition to their being the place where 'sweet' dance jazz turned into big band swing.

Not really much of a college; hell of a music department. And they played society dances -- didn't even get grant money.

201 If you ain't discovered Jesse Welles, and thought early Dylan was good, compare his Masters of War to Jessie's War Isn't Murder. Jesse's easy to find on YouTube.

What's interesting is that Jesse did his 10,000 hours (hat tip to Malcolm Gladwell) doing clubs and stages playing electric in bands. He's now all solo acoustic, often with a harp on a brace. The reverse of Dylan's career arc. Lemme know what you think after listening to Santa Claus is Amazon.
