74 Greenwood, Delaware, on Route 13, has about a thousand residents, but has a fancy City Hall, Cop Shop, and Fire Department built on the backs of mostly hapless tourists who drive through there. They lower the speed limit to 35 for no discernible reason other than revenue generation. A homeowner on the southbound side entering town erected 4'x8' plywood signs warning "Speed Trap Ahead!". 78 The cop is in a position of dominant authority, towering over the children and his eyes are hidden by the visor of his hat, yet he's smiling and the bike itself conceals whether he has a sidearm, making him less threatening to the viewer.

The kids offset all of this, with flushed faces and innocent expressions. Would hang.

81 Amusing; I had thought it was an early Norman Rockwell since the clothing obviously dated from 1920s, early 1930s -- and then I saw the name of the artist. I'm not familiar with his work, but Leyendecker had talent. I like it: it would look great in a squad room.

It reminds me of an incident many moons ago when I stopped a couple of little kids riding down a hilly road in a small cart. They were just thinking, "Weee!!!", and I was thinking that they were so low to the ground that a motorist wouldn't see them and run right over them. I read their mother the Riot Act for not keeping an eye on them.

Posted by: Retired Buckeye Cop is now an engineer at December 26, 2024 09:46 AM (pJWtt)

82 It looks like an early Rockwell because of the sweet subject, the limited colors of Saturday Evening Post covers of the period, and the fact that J.C. Leyendecker was Rockwell's mentor. Yes, I'm still sure that's JCL, not FXL.

113 What I like in the painting is the automobile the kids made. Scrap lumber, some buggy wheels and they make a car out of it. How many kids today have: a) Dad's workbench in the garage with saws, hammer, nails and such. b) The freedom to use what can be dangerous tools without supervision. c) The freedom to roam the area and scrounge the stuff.

When I was a kid we started out making skateboards from old clip-on roller skates and scrap lumber from nearby house construction. We ended up making larger steerable vehicles towed behind a bicycle, still with roller skate wheels. Went fast enough we could drift around corners. Going downhill helped with the speed. It's surprising no one had their teeth vibrated loose or suffered major injury/death. (I think back on life and realize there truly are Guardian Angels!)

They also used salary an occupation. Male appearance was consistently secondary. Guys didn't care about anythig other than looks.

TBH there are important biological reasons men are focused on beauty and women on status/wealth. I think the important thing is to realize that's a natural aspect of attraction for both and if we were a sane society again something that would be used constructively by that society.

First Things sometimes posts article from the archives and I read one not long ago from early Aughts about how the low demographic shifts because of WW II caused the sexual revolution and the demand for legalized abortion.

Women at that time expected to marry a slightly order, establshed man who could support a family. WW II crushed the birth rate and was followed by a significant boom afterwards. What this meant was that women born in 1947 vastly outnumbered men born in 1942 or 1943. This lead to increased competition, and women felt forced to loosen their morals, and men often failed to honor this, leaving the woman "in trouble."

According to this theory, the "ban the bra" business and skimpy clothing during the 1970s was the result of women who had failed to secure a man using desperate means to attract one, and this forced younger women to do the same in order to compete.

Saturday Evening Post, Frank X. Leyendecker

Frank Xavier Leyendecker was born in Germany in 1879 (or '76 or '77, depending upon the source) and from boyhood, he seemed to be something of an afterthought.

After enjoying early success, Frank’s demons of an inferiority complex and substance abuse ruled.

Although the family immigrated to America in 1882, primogeniture still held some sway to the Leyendecker parents, who were determined that older brother Joe (J.C.) receive the training required for future success.
...

The piece ends, "The Cutler book on J.C. Leyendecker states: "With nothing else left, no place in the fraternal relationship, a broken spirit, and overshadowed by J.C.’s successes, Frank lapsed further into his sad indulgences." Depression, heavy drinking, smoking, and drug use culminated in his death at age 45 in April of 1924."

So, like Harry, a spare wrapped in self-pity.

I mentioned on the ONT, we got a video from our nephew. His little boys, ages 5 and 2, got a battery powered Jeep as the big Christmas present. It took less than a minute for them to put a dent in a house wall. To judge by their excitement, the kids thought this was exciting. Mrs. JTB and I laughed out loud. (Of course, it's not our wall.)

That's how it was justified. And the pencil test was to keep those with serious sweater-puppies out of the game.

Growing up in the 50's, a favorite childhood project was building a soapbox car. Find an old baby carriage, remover the axles and wheels. A couple of scrap 2 by 4's, a wooden plank, and rope and nails was all we needed. Built many of them, for sure. Mom always had the band aids at the ready! Sometimes we even had a brake lever.
