The only relatively bad moment I had was when we got to the middle of the trail and we were going to stop for a quick break. My horse knew that path and that there was some really good grass before the stopping point. He tried to make a beeline for it. I disagreed.
You know you're supposed to pull on the reins to get them to stop? I nearly took his neck out of the socket. He sullenly listened to me and grazed at the designated location instead.
(One of the people who work at the stable commented on how he's on the trails 2-3 times a day and he's still rather fat.)

I now savor the evening. Early on, we almost always stayed at the maternal grandparents, and Jo Stafford got prominent LP play. That is what I am doing now, listening to the most chill music ever recorded as the logs on the fire wither to coals and ash. All is peaceful, contented.

As this day has progressed from day to night I have reached an appropriate moment of reflection. Our journeys through the years are myriad and often evolve to places unexpected. It has been a decade since I spent the Christmas holidays with family or friends. I didn't intend for this to happen but it did and now I find myself uncomfortable at the thought of being with others. Still I find myself full of the season and blessed.

This relates, in a way, to an experience I had last week. There were some things that I needed to deliver to a couple that I know who live up north of here a bit. Well, I got lost. That's easy to do when you get up in the mountains a bit. Having explored this cove and that cove, I was passing a church, a very typical church in these parts...nice smallish brick structure on the side of a hill, no real settlement around.
A Baptist church as it happens. I noted a car turning into the drive leading to parking in the back, and thought 'Aha, maybe I can get directions'. In the back, it was obvious that the church and members were collecting and distributing supplies for those in need. This has been true for every church I have been by within 50 miles. Very nice couple and their son there for a Christmas pageant set me on the right direction. As I was pulling out, I noticed on their sign board in front, 'We Stand With Israel'

Yesterday, I recalled a stalled effort to do a card-driving War of the Roses game using a system I worked out for (believe it or not) Irag, Syria and Libya.
First obstacle: I don't have a plotter at my beckon call to print maps. As I pondered this, I realized that I was of the analog generation, and actually have transparent hex maps! Tomorrow I shall endeavor to develop a test map and then start playtesting with the family.

I made peace as my circumstances changed each time. When I was a decade younger I went photographing Christmas on Christmas Day, when I was less younger I wrote about Christmas on Christmas Day, now that I am no longer young I am enjoying that I have a lovely home, a bottle of scotch, a pecan wood fire in the fireplace and a 75 inch TV with the Godfather playing. After spending months living in car 15 years ago - well, I am tempered differently now. Plus New Mexico. Blessing come where blessing are.

We had a lovely day- just the two of us, mostly feasting and relaxing.
We texted with all the kids and older g-kids and talked to three of them, which was nice.
I'm reminded that back in the mid-60s, one of the men on our street worked for Ma Bell. Since he was a nice-looking and well-spoken guy, he got to do the PSA's the Austin office produced each year to inform people when would be the best times to call family and friends long-distance.
Some of us remember when that was a big deal.
We all thought it was so cool that the T's dad was on TV, even for that.
