As families prepare for holiday gatherings, a new survey by the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) highlights a sharp divide between Democrat and Republican voters in their willingness to share the season with family members who hold opposing political views. According to PRRI's findings, 23% of Democrats said they would spend less time with family over such differences, compared to just 5% of Republicans.
PRRI President Robert P. Jones noted the growing impact of identity and worldview on personal relationships, telling Axios, "It may be tense around the Hanukkah and Christmas table. ... It's not just that we're disagreeing about abortion or taxes, but we're disagreeing about a fundamental worldview."
Jones also mentioned that some families are preemptively agreeing to avoid political discussions during their gatherings to maintain peace.
The survey, conducted online with 5,772 adults from all 50 states, found that political alignment heavily influences holiday dynamics. Previous polling reinforces this trend, with a CBS News/YouGov survey showing that while more Trump voters (38%) than Harris voters (28%) are open to discussing politics at Thanksgiving, the majority of Americans prefer to skip the subject entirely.

TBH I'm not super-psyched at "being open to discussing politics at Thanksgiving," when you know others present disagree with you. It probably should be skipped as a topic in the interest of familial unity.

I have a feeling that leftists would usually say that they are more "open" to sharing their insane evil politics with their family members on the holidays, except for this one year, because they're feeling humiliated and broken.

Next year, 60% of leftwingers will find their zeal again and inflict their politics on other family members.

I suspect the data being quoted in this kind of article is bullshit, but I don't doubt there's something going on here.

The correlation between voting patterns and any number of other factors are huge. It used to be obvious, when you talked about religious groups or racial groups, but those things are more murky these days.

If I had to guess... and it's just a guess, I'd say mental illness is associated highly with people who are strictly on the D side of the voting ledger. Other than that, I wouldn't want to guess what data is able to be gleaned.

Dagny is off somewhere doing Dagny things. Linda just arrived, and we'll cobble together some dinner. We bought a ham at the grocery yesterday along with some stuffing mix; that's for tomorrow. Church tomorrow morning too, as she did not want to go tonight.

Linda is about to disturb the cats again by putting that Santa suit on them. Actually Stirling looks great in red and white against his black fur, and he doesn't seem to mind the thing being on him. We'll try to send a pic or two to the Pet Thread, if we can get some good shots of him standing or sitting still.

I'm beginning to wonder about this. Yes, avoidance is nice to keep things peaceful, but many families (beyond the most intimate relations) do not gather but for the holiday season. That's when you feel out "your family's perspective about life and everything". If not during these occasional get-togethers, when does one discuss tangibly important thoughts and philosophies? If you never get into these discussions, then what do you really know about what should be the closest people in your lives? They might as well be strangers.

And I guess that might be the point now. Everyone outside your own household really are strangers. Yeah, superficially you're closely related WRT the local sports team and the weather because you can openly discuss the harmless, but what relationship do you really have?

So avoiding politics and the "controversial":

One of our pilots phillip comer pickeled off a missile at an Australian Lear Jet that was towing a practice gun target for the Air Wing back in 87. I do not recall what kind of missile it was but the Australians dropped the target and sped away when they saw a missile coming at them. He disabled the radar lock when he realized what he had done and the missile flew harmlessly into the ocean.

He never said a word to anyone and came back to the carrier and landed. He handed off his jet to the plane captain and went to the ready room. When the ordies went to pull weapons off of the plane they noticed the missile was gone.

We did a JAG investigation and it was determined that he "lost situational awareness" in flight and had selected a missile to fire instead of guns.

I think a big group of voters just fill out ballots (or have them filled out for them) without much thought. That's one thing, and I wouldn't speculate too much about those people.

Then there are the rabid "mah bortions" types, or the BLM types or DEI or whatever. I think the percentage of those people who have anxiety, depression, PTSD, personality disorders... it gets close to 100%.
