Gun Thread: Sunday Before Christmas Edition!

santa pic 2024 scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Shitballs! How in the ever-loving Hell did it get to be the Sunday before Christmas? Have you finished your Wish List and distributed it to all of your gift givers? What are you hoping to find under the tree come Christmas morning? Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

******

FUNdamentals
No Gun Thread would be complete without a focus on fundamentals, now would it?

Q: Weasel, may we please get a break from your stupid fundamentals for Christmas?
A: No. No you may not.

No watch, but this guy is a professional shooter! whatever that means.

Christmas Memory Lane

Here's a fun look back at the guns of Christmas from yester-year.

Thanks Santa!!

red ryder stock 122224 photo scaled.jpg
Daisy Red Ryder BB Gun

Introduced in 1940, the Daisy Red Ryder BB gun quickly captured the imagination of red-blooded American boys and girls across the country. Developed and marketed in conjunction with Dell Comics and the Western hero by the same name, the Red Ryder fires a .177 cal BB at 350 fps with a maximum range of approximately 195 yards. Careful! You'll put an eye out!

In the era before electronic distractions and overly protective parents raising impossibly overprogrammed children, the Red Ryder was often at the very top of a young person's Christmas wish list. A mainstay of backyard ranges, the BB gun was frequently their first introduction to shooting; teaching responsibility, safety and marksmanship. These were the days when stay-at-home moms told their kids to go outside and play in the morning and to be home before dark, never worrying about life-changing social injustices suffered on the playground, or worse. The fact that the Daisy Red Ryder is still in production today is frankly a little surprising, having somehow not yet succumbed to the rabidly hysterical anti-gun mob and toy fun-police.

122224 daisy Nationals scaled.jpg

For nearly 140 years, the company now known as Daisy Outdoor Products has been manufacturing air guns. Originally a steel windmill manufacturer, the company began making air guns in 1880 as a premium offered to farmers purchasing a windmill. Eventually the rifles were in such demand the company discontinued its main product line to concentrate on the air gun business. Today, the company actively promotes gun safety through a series of online programs and printed material and has an extensive competitive shooting program holding matches since 1966.

Daisy is but one of many manufacturers offering these types of programs. Do you know a young person who might benefit or otherwise enjoy participating?

122522 daisy red ryder scaled.jpg

Did you have an air gun, and was it a Daisy Red Ryder? Was it a surprise from Santa, or did you have to beg Mom and Dad for it? Were you allowed to roam with it at will, or were you more closely supervised?

Do you still have both eyes?

21 Question for our experts about first shot accuracy with a REALLY cold barrel.

I sight in my deer rifle on a nice day in October when it is 60F or more, and then stay off the land as much as possible coming into deer season.

I might then take a shot in January at first light when it is 12F.

Do our precision shooters note a predictable difference of strike point for a very cold barrel first shot, or is the variation almost completely rifle dependent?

(I think my best option is to actually go out and shoot on a very cold day after deer season and compare the result to the October results.)

27 Little brother and I both had Daisy BB guns. We used to shoot pop cans from the attic of the detached garage in the summer, and targets in the basement in the winter (with a thick cardboard backstop, but it was only partially effective, and we were forever finding those little golden BBs with our bare feet thereafter).

Good memories.

47 Pillage, funny you should bring that up. Range report, 1,000 yard match.

I spent some time working out some new loads, trying to see if I could find a load which would help me reclaim some accuracy until the new barrel comes in. Surprisingly, I found a load which seemed to be just what I needed.

However, the load appeared just a tad hot, due to cartridge extraction issues which showed up when I was running my new loads through a chronograph. Well, I didn't have time to really do a work up, so, took 2 tenths of a grain off the load, put together some ammo then headed to the match. First shot, cold bore, right down the middle of a target @1,000 yards, 10 ring. My thought was, "this isn't good, because it's not that easy." Second shot, though, was high, ridiculously so. I looked and realized I'd not set the rifle up on the bench in the same way as the first shot. I shrugged, declared myself ready to go after two sighters and went for it.

Finished with 1X ring, 4 in the 10 ring, 5 in the 9 ring, for a match total of 95, with 100 being the top score one could get. Tied for 3rd in score, dropped to 4th, as the other guy had 2 in the X ring.

I was happy with the result.

I discovered that at home, of course.

84 @ RI Red, 174 grain Hornady ELD VT. However, I'm pushing it down the barrel @ 2900 FPS.

It appears the bullet likes to be between 2890 and 2900 fps. I'm running just over that, but not much. My ES is running around 10 to 15fps. Needs to get better but I'm getting there.

For what it's worth, even though there are heavier bullets which are more efficient, I'm making up the difference through speed.

Of course, everything I just said will probably become meaningless once I get a new barrel.

93 Did you have an air gun - Yes
and was it a Daisy Red Ryder? No. I had a Daisy 917, multipump pellet rifle (rifled barrel).

Was it a surprise from Santa - Yes, my brother got the 880 model.

Were you allowed to roam with it at will, or were you more closely supervised? - We were mostly closely supervised.

However....the neighbor bully who used his Red Ryder on me through the bushes between our houses learned a lesson when I could reach him across the yard......and I did.

Many rabbits and squirrels were taken by that 917.

Do you still have both eyes?

94 But we really are making progress at the club now. In addition to mulching most of the Long Range, we are completely re-doing our outdoor Action Bays.
Got rid of one side because the beaver dams usually turned them into ponds or ice rinks. Put the dirt on the other side making 15 yrd bays into 25, and adding two more.
We also widened our 100 yard jungle walk to make it more user friendly.
IDPA will really benefit. Can’t wait until spring.

There is a drug ad on TV right now that shows the poor suffering people happily taking a "swing dance" class.

Just finished a very nice Montecristo Espada Oscuro out back (where it was getting cold, but not east coast cold). Nice cigar. I believe it was reviewed here by some annoying moron.

Oh - and so you're entering the "cigar tent" world? There's a store/video channel from Phoenix called Cigars Daily, their Facebook group has had a thing going for a few years on winter cigar tents/shelters. Worth checking out. Sounds like you have the essentials lined up - tent, heater, fan. Presumably whatever digital device you're using now on the deck for comms/entertainment.

181 Range report of sorts, I guess. Finally got to pull a trigger on my duty day. For some time it's been too busy/too many ranges taken by military. Military doesn't do training or qualifications this time of year, so smaller ranges were open. Was carrying the 1911 so just emptied some brass with that.

A stunning discovery was made - fundamentals, especially ensuring a straight-back trigger pull and a firm grip, produced very accurate shots. Whoda thunk it?

No New American activity visible, again. Didn't get to chat much with BP, but at the checkpoint on the drive home I said to the young officer - "just another month!" with a wink and a smile. He laughed and said "oh yeah!". I imagine morale is about to do a SpaceX from its current nadir.

182 Friendly fire.

2 US Navy pilots shot down over Red Sea in apparent ‘friendly fire’ incident, US military says

"The F/A-18 shot down had just flown off the deck of the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier, Central Command said. On Dec. 15, Central Command acknowledged the Truman had entered the Mideast, but hadn’t specified that the carrier and its battle group was in the Red Sea.
"“The guided-missile cruiser USS Gettysburg, which is part of the USS Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group, mistakenly fired on and hit the F/A-18,” Central Command said in a statement."

185 Weasel desist from talking yourself out of it and get the Garmin. 100% extreme satisfaction rate from my unscientific sampling of owners at the range. And just watching them, you can see how easy it is to use. Think you're out of the long distance game but the complement to that is of course those electronic targets. Guys with both at my range just come up on their elbows (shooting prone), check one screen, then another, and basically have all their data and results.

Years back I saw for sale online a Garand clip loader, original item from WWII days. Looked like it worked well, I assume something like this was used in government arsenals. A tall skinny press, sort of looked like a juice squeezer, just place the clip down below, the rounds into a little holder, pull down, and viola!

242 Thanks for another great Gub Thread, Weasel.

243 After hubby passed a little over a year ago I accepted that the holidays would not be the same anymore. They would be different but never as they were.

I am so sorry for your loss. For all the pain I have never had to feel the agony of losing a spouse or a child. I cannot imagine. God be with your and keep you through these weeks into the new year.

245 Weasel, you need to make some holsters for them. How cool do you have to be to have dogs holstered, especially if they attack your enemies?

248 OK, having done my bit to direct the 7am Monday morning Zoom call to CBD rather than Weasel, I shall bid you good folks a fine evening and a Merry Christmas! Thanks Weasel as always for hosting this merry band of misfits!

We're here. We always have an extra bit of food at our table, and room for at least one more chair. And I, for one, would listen to your stories if you wanted to tell them.

I hope your home is filled with love and warmth this year, Christopher. And, if not, then I hope something is kindled in the new year to bring you peace and hope.

I will put you on the prayer list for this year.

Thank you. Thanks everyone and I wish you all the best of the Holiday season. I understand that Hanukkah starts the same day a Christmas this year so we can all celebrate together.

253 I could wear an eye patch and play Snake Plisskin for the new year.

That would be extra fun if you were neighbors to Scoob (in NYC).

256 Santa is the tip of the spear, making entry into housing projects to deliver presents to the beleaguered good children of cities like Baltimore, so I figure the MAC-10 is a good enough gun for the close-quarters stopping power he'll need to remain safe and jolly. And that seems to be one of those South African BXPs, from the look of it.

Nice choice, Saint Nick.

268 My mom was afraid of guns and made dad sell his service 1911. It would have been really cool to have around but knowing my oldest brother probably best it wasn't around. I would have liked to grow up more familiar with weapons, to this day a gun make me nervous to be around. Maybe it should.

I respectfully second GWB's words, written so much better than I could have...Cherish your memories and hopefully next year will permit you the opportunity to make enjoy new traditions, perhaps incorporating some of your earlier memories. I will pray that you have peace and comfort this Christmas.

270 I am looking to finally buy a new semi-auto 12-gauge shotgun for myself for Christmas. Any recommendations on this? Right now, I am looking hard at a Benelli Montefeltro. Not cheap, but it will most likely outlive me. What do you all think?
