Is Mike Johnson's Speakership in Danger?

Henry Rodgers at the Daily Caller suggests it might be.

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson is facing serious blowback from those in his own party for trying to push through a continuing resolution filled with unnecessary spending. Sources on Capitol Hill, including both lawmakers and their staff, told the Caller Johnson may have cost himself the Speaker's job with the poorly-received gambit right before Christmas.

"Mike Johnson spent a lot of time fundraising off of selfies with President Trump, and then betrayed him right before the inauguration. He'll have to answer for that in January," a senior House Republican staffer told the Caller.

The 1,574-page spending measure will receive votes from both Democrats and Republicans, but Johnson broke several promises in the process of putting forth the bill. Johnson said in September that he has "no intention of going back" to the "terrible tradition" of a Christmas omnibus.

A senior house aide told the Caller that House Republicans have lost trust in Johnson and that it will be hard to recover from.

"It's not a competence or leadership question for some folks now. It's a trust question. That's gonna be tough to come back from," the senior house aide said.

...

Johnson also promised that the spending bill would be written by committee leaders in an open process and members would have at least 72 hours to read it before voting, but in reality, the new CR was negotiated behind closed doors by leadership.

"On every important issue this majority has faced, the Speaker has shown himself to be inapt and outsmarted by Biden and Schumer and is too easily willing to surrender," one House Republican lawmaker told the Caller.

...

Kentucky Republican Rep. Thomas Massie was the first House Republican to say he would oppose Johnson's bid for Speaker, saying Wednesday: "I'll vote for somebody else." When asked who he would vote for instead he said: "I've got a few in mind. I'm not going to say yet."

"There's a cognitive disconnect among my colleagues who hated Speaker Johnson's CR, but still plan to vote for Speaker Johnson in 2 weeks. That 1557 page bill was a product of the swamp that uniparty Johnson was happy to facilitate. He couldn't understand why we didn't lap it up," Massie tweeted Thursday morning.

Ed Morrissey reports that Johnson has Trump's support.

IF.

Trump says that Johnson can "easily remain Speaker" "IF" he starts acting like a man and not the cringing weakling boy he seems to be.

If's a big word.

From Fox Digital:

President-elect Donald Trump told Fox News Digital that House Speaker Mike Johnson will "easily remain speaker" for the next Congress if he "acts decisively and tough" and eliminates "all of the traps being set by Democrats" in the spending package.

Fox News Digital spoke exclusively with the president-elect Thursday morning, just hours after the bipartisan deal to avoid a partial government shutdown was killed.

"Anybody that supports a bill that doesn't take care of the Democrat quicksand known as the debt ceiling should be primaried and disposed of as quickly as possible," Trump told Fox News Digital.

The liberal sellouts of the Republican Party are muttering in anger to themselves. Only their Democrat allies have the guts to complain on-the-record:

The Democrats are cursing the Republican base -- but you know that the Republican Quislings are even angrier.

The corporate cowards and Regime servants we call the GOPe need to understand and internalize the New Rules:

Yes, we all know that you can make your easy lives even easier by ducking every necessary fight and just giving in to Democrats on every tough vote.

But we didn't elect you so you can make your own lives easier.

We elected you to make our lives easier, and this requires that you make your lives harder much of the time.

If you're not up to this, we will vote you out of office. You are not important New Solomons we look to for wisdom. We are telling you our wisdom, and we expect you to implement that wisdom into positive policy.

We don't want your "wisdom," we don't want your "guidance." You are idiots. We only want you to take direction.

We don't want your "instincts," we don't want your "experience." Your instincts and experience are garbage. Your instincts and experience is why the Republic is on the edge of collapse and civil war.

You are not Ciceros. You are merely numbers. You are the stupid useless nobodies that were bland enough that we could put into office to implement our preferences.

If you're not willing to humble yourself and just be numbers for us, we will replace you with wiser people who will.

16 The only thing that scared the GOPe was Musk's threat to fund primaries against them.

What has turned the GOP into controlled opposition is donor funding directing behavior. Even small dollar funds from conservatives who want tight borders and smaller government go through captured organizations like the RNC and the RSCC.

Your $50 donation doesn't mean squat to Mitch and his cronies using it to tell backbenchers to toe the line or lose all funding.

The only independent voices in the GOP caucus (like Rand Paul and MTG) are largely self-funded with donation apparati outside of the RNC.

Musk being full MAGA and backing it up with his funds from his personal fortune as the richest man on the planet? That's an alternate funding source that dwarfs anything the RSCC can throw at a weak incumbent in a primary.

Musk's money scares them.

The lasting power of incumbency suggests voters do no such thing with regularity. As noted elsewhere, voters hate Congress with passionate vituperation... except for their own Congress-grifter, of course. Primary challenges are the principal thing that the uniparty uses to get rid of non-compliant politicians, so that threat is somewhat real. However, the relationship between votes and policy is nebulous at best. "Evolving in office" is real and it's spectacular.

84 65 The lasting power of incumbency suggests voters do no such thing with regularity.
Posted by: electronic means

=======

There's a lot of apathy and inertia that keeps incumbents in power, but it's not a passive exercise.

The establishment controls state-level GOPs across the country, and they fortify primary elections in favor of their own candidates all the time. Ballot access, party funding, media access, these are things that the state-level GOP of, say, SC can control to benefit someone like Lindsay Graham and keep primary opponents, quality ones, down.

This is probably why Tom Davis never ran against Graham.

Musk's money, though? $10 million to a primary challenger in small market SC by late this year? That can impact things when combined with a Trump endorsement.

It was mostly about border wall funding, but combine that with Trump's suggested spending bill which cut across the board (POTUS spending bills never get serious consideration in Congress), and the embrace of things like DOGE now, and maybe, just maybe, Trump has an interest in cutting things.

145 Face it; Trump doesn't actually have an interest in cutting spending or reforming things himself, as ace has said. If anyone thinks he's outraged over this, they're idiots. Even if Johnson is replaced by someone, MAGA will love that person for five minutes then decide they're a traitor, just like the last three speakers.

By your logic, Lincoln didn't really want to win the Civil War, because he kept changing generals.

158 I think Johnson made a big mistake but I don't think it was entirely stupid. Johnson was trying to get a compromise deal, the old DC way. And being an old school Republican that meant largely caving to Democrats to get a deal.

From what I've seen so far this is an entirely Republican plan. Trumpian even. Because Trump doesn't negotiate like old school Republicans.

Jeffries has come out trashing this deal and it wouldn't surprise me if it fails to pass. Johnson was aiming for a bill that would pass. Trump doesn't give a shit. Not right now anyway.

Republicans in Congress are going to have to get used to a new sheriff in town.

Trump is not a fiscal discipline guy. Never has been.

But the two issues are slightly distinct from each other.

I'll happily acknowledge that the Speaker isn't a shit heel the moment the Speaker demonstrates that he isn't a shit heel. The ways to do that are the same as they have been for years. Pass a budget - a real one. Don't put on shows to give the Uniparty what it wants followed by an "aw, shucks, better luck next time." Crack the whip on the Senate and use the purse as a means. Ditto the agencies if they get out of line. Find a way to pursue a pro-America, anticommunist agenda instead of just pretending.

We've a long run of Speakers unwilling to do even one of those things, which is why they're viewed with such contempt.

Republicans do subscribe to winning by losing.

Paul Ryan's choice to encourage Republican resignations in 2018 is the prime example of the past decade.

He thought he would weaken the GOP under Trump, weaken Trump in turn, and then retake the GOP afterwards. All he accomplished was weakening the GOPe within the GOP.

I mean...it's a bad strategy that doesn't work, but that doesn't mean that there aren't very powerful people who think it does.

221 I noted this morning there are about 15 Republicans who vote no every time a bill like this comes up. Most of them are from the so called Freedom Caucus. What they want is unrealistic and when they finally get something they constantly move the bar. We generally have over 200 Republicans in line to vote for these bills and people like Massie vote no. Why are you even in congress? Go check the record and see how they vote. It’s not Democrats. It’s people in the caucus who constantly force the speaker to go to Democrats and get votes. That’s how you got this piece of shit. The FC doesn’t even want to pass a clean CR.

All we need to do is get into next year and regular order. We have lower budgets and cuts all lines up. I’m kinda sick of people who can’t see the forest through the trees. Maybe we should primary every one of them.

231 When Reagan took over in 1981 the left flipped out that the evil monster had just seized control and he was going to turn the USA into this totalitarian hellhole. And what was the terrible thing that Reagan planned to do that would bring about this hellish dystopia?

Shrin the size of the government.

Oh noes! The evil dictator will impose his nightmarish agenda of giving himself less power over our lives.

Ultimately the Democrats were able to blunt Reagan's goals, and the goverment continued to grow anyway, albeit at a slower pace.

But it's the exact same irrational freakout that the Left is espousing in 2024. Trump great crime is that he will LESSEN the totalitarian nature of Big Government.

The ;eft hates this because they want to government to have massive powers so that the Left can impose their insane agenda without opposition whenever they next take the reigns of government.

Trump great achievement, if he can pull it off, will be to weaken the power of the nanny state so that 16 or 20 or 24 years from now the left won't have that cudgel at their disposal when they retake the White House.

236 Is he, though? McCarthy knowingly stabbed the base in the back. The best that can be said about Johnson is that he keeps tripping over his untied shoelaces while running and holding a knife which he accidentally plunges into the base when he trips.

Note, DOW is right at the same level as when Trump got elected... all the Trump bounce, is gone, because of GOP quislings who 'may' still hold enough power to stop the Trump economy.

Note. For the first time, combined Business and Consumer Debt, is equaled by the combined Federal, State, and Local Gov debt. As Half the countries debt and borrowing is NOT dependent on Interest Rates, but on Politics... this means that inflation will continue at unsustainable rates, until the Government changes policy.

Yesterday the DOW tanked in part, because Congress was signaling business as usual... no change... failure continuing...

"SPARKS, MD — The hotly anticipated next installment of the popular Civilization franchise, Sid Meier's Civilization VII, will reportedly expand its tech tree system with a new "Bidenomics" research upgrade where inflation ruins everything and eggs go up to $12 a dozen.

"The Civilization franchise is rooted in history, and that includes modern history," said franchise creator and creative director Sid Meier. "Experiencing the real-time collapse of America has given us a lot of inspiration."

Its predecessor, Civilization VI, was released on October 21, 2016 — before Joe Biden implemented economic policies that brought the greatest economy on earth to its knees. This modern touchstone in history served as inspiration for the game's newest feature: a Bidenomics research upgrade.

"It's like any other upgrade on the tech tree, except that it just causes inflation to spiral out of control and the price of eggs to skyrocket," said Sid Meier. "It's really fun.""

At this point, one of two things is true about the Congressional GOP writ large:

1) They're completely, utterly, down to the bone stone cold fucking retarded and lack the general ability to know even a smidgen of What Time It Is
or
2) They're in on it.

Either way, fuck them all to hell and back. We have basically two years to do anything with the Trump Agenda. Maintain "our" slim majority from now until then to keep the Committee chairs out from under Commie Asses, then primary all of them. I hope Elon personally funds PACs to torpedo all of them, then let the chips fall where they may. I'd rather be governed by a 100-seat Dem majority than a GOP "majority" where half of them are ready to knife us in the back at any turn.

325 A solid food supply is pretty important, as is energy. The point of ethanol was to find a use for some of the over-production by farmers, corn in particular. It is "better" than paying farmers to grow nothing, which they still do with several programs.

Of course corn products are not great food either, including HFCS. Same with wheat and other high carb crops. Soybeans at least have more protein. Seed oils we now believe Are Killing Us All.

And "certified organic" is largely a waste of effort imo. Feeding corn to cows and other livestock seems like a good way to produce beef and bacon and chicken for more keto/carnivore diets. But cows fart and are destroying the earth by 2000, or at least by 2010.

Because Trump said it.

Republicans in the House have never been like Democrats. We all know it. They all think they are the most important person in the room. This is not a new thing, it's been going on for decades.

Trump is completely different than any president we've ever had before. He is breaking the way the House and Senate used to work. 361 For 40+ years the largest "subsidy" was the Fed and Bailouts to keep the markets going ever higher. Trillions in Capital Appreciation, as interest rates went ever lower (17 to zero). There were many bailouts for billionaires when the big gamblers (2 big to fail/jail) sucked up the Big Bucks, and now rule us all.

All other "investors" went along for the ride, but they too were actually subsidized. I took part, but it is the globalists that really got incredibly rich just playing in the markets, often manipulating them. But hey ... some "subsidies" are better than others I guess.

362 Trump will bring regular order and so will Johnson. I love how people can’t see that we changed the speaker and it’s still the same problem. Pro tip: it’s not the speaker and you could bring Newt back and get the same result. It’s assholes in the Freedom Caucus who tell everyone their the true cons and then sabotage every single bill. Go look at the demands they’ve made in the past. It’s a joke.

If the Freedom Caucus is the problem, make his head the Speaker instead.

363 292 Brilliant, actually. And yes, I'm starting to think Johnson was in on it.

next I'm sure we'll be told to 'trust the plan'...

The thought exercise is probable but given the circumstances and Chief players the dream is more possible than ever.

364 True fact: The guy who first marketed and sold Vaseline advertised it as a bread topping, like butter, and he himself ate Vaseline toast every day for decades. No joke.

I mix lard, petrolatum, and molasses together for the cats, for hairball medicine. I leave it in an open bowl on the table. I have been doing this since I started finding cat tongue prints in the butter when I left it on the table. I figure if they are going to dose themselves, they might as well do it on something that will help them better than butter.

In an interesting 'sequel' to War of the Worlds, Edison and some others invent space ships of their own. On a test flight they visit the moon and find a crater full of gems like diamonds.

Then they go to Mars and drown the entire planet by blowing the walls holding the canal water in. AMURICA!!

Are these people married? Your husband is probably tired of seeing all of you anyway. If you're talking casual sex partner, why? He's not going to call.

I've heard that you can just give vaseline orally to cats for hairballs.
