![]() The quadrennial Pardon Palooza! Ace, cobs, and commenters covered much of this in the past few days but here is a bit more to bat around. The pardoning of the easily influenced and the willing malefactors is upon us. Normally I don’t pay much attention to this. However, the deliberate and premeditated conduct of this administration and the behind-the-scenes lever pullers has perked up my desire for “I want consequences and prosecutions.” Quite the progression over the years. These counts include all grants of clemency (convictions pardoned, commuted, and rescinded). An unsurprising list of names at the top. For any interested, here is an easy-to-read history of the pardon power. Those curious on a deeper level, this is well-cited and serves as a good aggregation of cases. Some references to Burdick v. United States and Biddle v. Perovich, which relate to some of the discussions in the comments section over the past week. Any experts and/or those well-read (this includes Lurkers) are encouraged to add some context in the comments Pretty cold around these parts this time of the year. Which means it is Hotdish season! Tater Tot Hotdish being the gold standard. Tots, meat (venison, sausage, ground beef), cheese, cream of sumfin soup, onion, and veggies (for color only). Out of the oven, nuclear temperature, and down the hatch. Hotdish (not Hot Dish) is far superior than a French cassoulet. The cassoulet has beans! This guy went across and well past the Rubicon on Hotdish history. No chance he is coming back. ![]() ![]() Candidate insults are not getting any nastier over time. Sort of tame by comparison and a good reminder that our grandparents were likely tougher than us. Some historical gems here and here. Song covers? Pretty meh, typically. Once in a while someone blows the lid off. Carrie Underwood (and her pins) with Paradise City cover at the 2013 CMA Fest. She nailed the Axl Rose (Davy Jones) dance moves. Who knew that Billy Idol didn’t like commies? Amusing information about his Oktobriana tattoo from an interview on tumblr: “this Amazon Brigitte Bardot , Mata Hari spy type person who vanquishes the foes of Oktobriana ( The October Revolution ), you know , the foes of real communism. Well, in the end all these students got put in psycho hospitals, except for one guy who got out and brought the cartoon to London and printed it.” Tonight’s ONT brought to you by moron style rebus, pictogram, brain teaser, visual pun silliness. Up to the standard of Voltaire and Frederick the Great? No. Fun, easy, frivolous, and not completely devoid of imagination – but nearing it. Went straight down the comments list from the Café a few nights back and picked out ones that would work. Some proved to be too obvious (a picture of an Ewok, CBD) and others simply too long or tricky due to space limitations. Some are a stretch, some require a bit of a leap. You will be awarded no prize, nor will your AoS social credit score improve. Name the Morons. This ONT is posted with a nod toward 2025 and the next four years. Pretty cold around these parts this time of the year. It's been a nicely mild December here in NE Indian Territory. But we're about to catch the edge of this cold wave. Some years back - must be 15 or so - Billy Idol returned to making music.
There was a 15 minute video put together to introduce his first single in years. Interviews with Billy and other ls with quick 1 second clips of the new song, building up to the complete song. Much was made of the fact that Billy was now clean. How hard he had worked to beat his addiction. That was very uplifting. The song? Not so much. Literally it was like Baby Baby one two three I want to climb your lemon tree.... All I could think was Billy get back on the Horse, man.... It’s axiomatic.
When a once and famous rock and roll band have all took the pledge, and released from re-hab, they get a nice interview and always say “We think it’s the best stuff we’ve done in years”. Um, yeah Sure I bet it ain’t. Not condoning drug use, and giving 20 somethings a $100,000 advance for the next three albums is going to have them wired out of their gourd. A good example was the Beatles. Rubber Soul is a pretty good album, and they were high as a kite. Then they went off the deep end with the rubbish of Sgt Poofter stuff, by the time of the White Album they were just huffing their own farts. Easily a single LP worth of suitable material, they insisted on including a bunch of crap. IMO Posted by: Common Tater at December 31, 2024 10:50 PM (29nn/) 211

That's a hundred thousand cases out of well north of 20 million illegals and easily more than a million illegal Mexicans. Second, someone Treat The Lovely Senorita to a cup of shut the Hell up. Ham was a success! Slow cooked it on low all day with a drizzle of lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, and soy sauce. Just sliced it open and it basically fell apart in a giant meat explosion, turned into shredded pork. Succulent.
Delicious paired with the cheese ball mix on a triscuit, though I also made oil drizzled baked potatoes as well to go with. And husband got Oreos and root beer float stuff for later. Posted by: LizLem at December 31, 2024 11:02 PM (gWBY1) 257

Happy new year everyone.
Nice relaxing day, took the motorcycle out for a 130-ish mile ride along mostly two lane roads with 45mph speed limits. Touring some north alabama farming communities (Madison Cross Roads) and stumbled across this gem. https://maps.app.goo.gl/vkepU1e7qDqC3aZG7 A freaking dive bar in the middle of BFE 'bama. Nice atmosphere, no music when i stopped for some coffee to warm up. Gotta go back this spring and get some music some solid redneck culture. I need to take Smash's bike out for a similar run as she has a pinched nerve and can't ride, but it's such a dang small bike i feel like the yellow rain slicker dude on the tricycle in the Benny Hill show when i get on it. And it's gutless. Twist the throttle and it doesn't even pretend to go faster by getting louder. Anyway, Happy New Year (again). Posted by: BifBewalski at December 31, 2024 11:14 PM (MsrgL) 290

If drugs are a gateway to creativity, how come most drug users don't create anything (other than family and societal dysfunction)? Creative people create. King, referenced above, is a good example. He had a productive period when he was a substance abuser and went right on writing afterward, more or less taking over the horror genre during that later period in a way no one else ever has.

Quick, before the day is over
Day 7 I can't take much more of this. Today, on top of all the usual agglomeration of twenty-one avians, and another pear tree, my "true love" sent me seven swans. There's no place for them to be swimming, so they're running around in my yard, chasing the few remaining geese. Do you have any idea how big a swan is? These suckers have a wingspan of, like, nine feet. And they're definitely not domesticated. They're wild, powerful, and aggressive. I see why a bunch of them is called a "lamentation." The raptors and owls, quite a flock of them gathered now to feast on the other smaller birds, won't bother the swans. What has my "true love" got against me? Lawyer is still working on that restraining order. Local animal control called. They're coming by tomorrow because of the neighbors' complaints. You are doin' some nice thinking there. You'll be good at this. Yes, the earth wobbles around. This means that time, astronomical time does indeed wobble around. The closest thing to the old GMT is known as UT1. That wobbles. UT1 is corrected for "Chandler wobble", the motion of the pole relative to the surface of the earth, but the earth's free wobble in intertial space is not corrected. UT2 corrects for the seasonal components of that, but there is a random component. Astronomical time is not uniform. Think of it as a clock whose hands wobble a bit and don't move at exactly constant speed. Ephemeris time, realize by "TT", and kept by atomic clocks, is uniform (well, relativity makes this get a bit complex, but for Newtonian purposes, it's uniform). >> Would a pendulum clock, whose period is a function of gravity,
If interested, you can read all the sources of error for pendulum clocks. Variation in gravity is one (along with all sort of other variables). Lunar and solar tides affect this seasonally. Up until atomic clocks, the most accurate clock for astronomical purposes at the turn of the 20th century was something called a vacuum master-slave pendulum clock. They still have a few at the USNO. At the time, they thought the accuracy was about 1s per year. Turns out it was an order of magnitude better. Careful measurements of one of those running free at the USNO over a year or so showed it was indeed sensitive to the sun-moon tidal cycles. Since that was predictable, it could've been factored out, and achieved 1s in 10 year accuracy. Again, they didn't know it, because they didn't have a much more precise/accurate clock to compare it with. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (Mzdiz) at January 01, 2025 12:55 AM (w6EFb) 630

But there is always an element of “somebody else did all the work” aspect to it. They already did the Math. They know where the stars are, the clock stars, but it seems arbitrary at some point. Or put another way, if I need to test something - we test it against a known standard. A reference standard. Well how did we get the reference? From the test standard, by which we calibrate against. Well who calibrated the original standard? We test a torque wrench against a calibration standard. Which is set with weights . One of those vacuum clocks: https://tinyurl.com/27aoo2zn The Schortt-Synchronome. In operation, the swing plane of the vacuum pendulum had to be carefully set normal to the swing of the external slave pendulum. See the "Huygens Effect". Two pendulum clocks with a component in the same plane will get coupled and synchronize, and this will affect the accuracy of both. This effect (well, the exact mechanism of the coupling) was only figured out exactly recently. It was some very complex physics. It can be kind of fun (for certain definitions of fun) to hear the various gunshots and try to figure out platform or caliber (handgun, rifle, etc). Not really all that shooty around here on this night (mostly intermittent fireworks), but there are occasional sounds late at night that sound a lot like a rifle (handguns tend to be a "pop" sound).
Then there was a time in another place where somebody won a big soccer game and the sky looked like Berlin at night in 1944, and you'd hear bullets returning to zero potential energy on buildings not far away. Fortunately the 23mm didn't seem to land in my area. But the sounds of the various small caliber full-auto platforms were pretty easy to ID. Is the Melania the only FLILF we've had? Partially it may be because until historically recently, women in their 40s and 50s went for a more "mature" than "glamorous" look unless they were entertainers, especially if they were attempting to enhance the "seriousness" of their husbands. Posted by: JackStraw -------- I have a damned heartbreaking story like that. A very old good friend made a big effort to get in touch with me in the aftermath, offering his RV. No communications of any kind here, so it was probably 10 days or more before I could get back to him. I finally got an email out to him from a functioning wi-fi, thanked him profusely, and inquired about he how he was doing. That's when I found out that his wife had undergone a minor surgery, but had not come out of anesthesia. At that point, she had been on life-support for 40 days. She passed away about three weeks ago. We sometimes talk here about what constitutes a Good Friend. Posted by: Scarymary at January 01, 2025 01:51 AM (a8Yoi) Like others here of a certain age, my parents had two cars with consecutive plates. Gas was sold on odd/even days depending on the ending license plate number. It was my job to get in a gas line just about every other day to get gas. Dad used his car for city work but only got paid mileage; he had to buy his own gas, which meant I was in line frequently to get gas for his car. Mom drove to a graveyard shift job at the Navy Base in the other car, so she needed gas often, too. You'd work out schedules and everything. In May, Mountbatten first found himself isolated off the Dutch coast, fruitlessly chasing a U-boat, and then needlessly broadcasting his position by signalling with a bright Aldis light; one message read: ‘How are the muskets? Let battle commence.’ The immediate result was the Kelly was torpedoed, blasting a 50-foot hole in the starboard side, killing 27 and wounding many more but, though heavily damaged and with only emergency lighting, she had survived

Jimmuh Cahtuh was the first demonrat I was able to vote against. Heh. I was in California in '80. When Carter conceded early, polls were still open there. Local Dims were pissed! Posted by: Krebs v Carnot: Epic Battle of the Cycling Stars (TM) at January 01, 2025 03:00 AM (FzPEn) 862
Happy New Year Horde. Fever, sore throat, aches and coughing. 2025 not exactly starting the way I had hoped. Still, potatus will be gone in less then 3 weeks. A bright spot.

Good night, Horde, I have mixed the champagne and scotch, I am headed to bed with familial obligations in the morning, much earlier than I would prefer.
For all of you, may 2025 be a year of love, peace and happiness, or at the very least of acceptance, thank you all for keeping me afloat when I have needed it the most. Posted by: Debby Doberman Schultz at January 01, 2025 03:07 AM (Sgq8y) 868
Jimmy Carter's funeral will be a two day affair.
You can attend on day one if you have an even numbered license plate, and day two if it's odd numbered. Posted by: Quarter Twenty at January 01, 2025 03:08 AM (dg+HA) 869

Soon comes the New Year here in Hollywood, and Werner sends good tidings to all! At midnight at Schloss Herzog, we are going to toss a fellow out the window who calls himself "Paul Anka." He is okay with that, apparently, as long as we do it with what he calls "total integrity."
Update: That went both better and worse than Werner had expected. This Herr Anka survived the drop, and lies some forty-six feet below the windowsill. He is currently demanding that all the guys get shirts, and keeps threatening to bring in somebody called Vinny Falcone. This seems to have some meaning beyond Werner's reckoning. Oh, and I still hate Shrub when he said 'islam is the religion of peace'. When did Bush get his religious studies degree again? We'll be paying for that deliberate verbal fuckup for decades to come. Hopefully we won't end up in the same place as England, Ireland, hell, Europe overall.

Updated Update: Werner has reached out to the hip-hop collective known as the Wu Tang Clan, who wish you all a Happy New Year, by the way. RZA and Ghostface Killah conferred, and believe that Anka may or may not be an entertainer from the remote past, who was legendary for his ability to "slice like an f'in' hammer." They instructed me to assure him that he was the only one on the stage who mattered. This is confusing, as is Anka's frequent queries about the whereabouts of someone named Joe. What this betokens for 2025 is hard to parse.
