  • What happened to ChatGPT the other day? It wasn't DNS, but it wasn't not DNS either. (Try Parity)

OpenAI deployed a new system that had been running happily on their test servers for some time. About twenty minutes in, things started going horribly wrong, with the monitoring system that reports on all things production taking over and then taking out the production servers, because it had a hidden scaling problem that never showed up on the smaller test environment.

And with the monitoring process eating up all the bandwidth on the control network, the simple changes they needed to make to fix the problem couldn't be done because OpenAI's internal DNS was down.

Lesson of the day: Hard code all your IP addresses in your software.*

6 Almost!

Evening and morning to all the AoSHQ satellites and stations across the Solar system! You think it's cold where you are now? Just wait until you cross the orbit of Saturn, baby! Brrrr!

'Tis Woden's Day, and at noon we will be halfway through the work week. And now it's seven days until Christmas. I gave in and used my store credit to order a new pipe, which comes with a free tin of tobacco (a blend that sounds intriguing, but if I dislike it, well, it's free, and I can give it to somebody sometime). Now the race begins to see if it can get here by next Tuesday.

Linda still won't tell me what she wants for the holiday. A bottle of wine and a box of chocolates will have to do, I guess.

9 In case anyone cares, the video series would be shot in-game in Guild Wars 2, and it would be a "police procedural" about a retired detective teaming up with basically an IT tech to track down bot users. (Bots aren't a huge problem in Player Vs Environment other than manipulating the materials economy. The real problem is bot usage in Player Vs Player, where so many people have quit playing because of losing to botting and therefore it's a huge hit to the company running the game. Third-party software should be flat-out banned, IMO.)

12 For those who missed this from the Cafe yesterday (re Canada/Trudeau):
---

From the Slop & Pail (The Globe & Mail):

"Trudeau says he won’t quit but will reflect on events in wake of Freeland's resignation"

https://archive.is/ddT0e

Once again, Castreau panders to his own ego but does nothing of substance.

Parliament has risen for the holidays as of today, so nothing will change until they sit in session again in the new year. And then nothing will likely change then either.

The one thing that might save the Liberal Party of Canada from complete destruction in the next federal election would be if one of their own members got the Speaker of the House to recognize them, and introduced a non-confidence motion on their own government. If all the Liberal MPs were in on it, and agreed to not follow the party whip, then the Conservatives and Bloc would pile on, and there might well be enough votes to topple the government.

But... They won't do that. They are weak and fearful and do not have the stones to pull a move like that, and so they will be destroyed when the election is finally called.

I will shed no tears for them. They have earned their destruction.

Let it come.

Klaus and his ilk just make my blood boil.

And as to #14: "A little like Louis XVI, don't you think?"

Yeah, and I have to wonder at what point the same eventual outcome is going to happen. We Canadians are generally a peaceful people, until we're not. (We have the 'eff it' switch wired into our psyches, just like our American brethren, but this gets oft forgotten in the claim that Canadians are so 'nice' and 'polite'.)

Those in power just keep knocking the pinions out from underneath our economy and eventually it's going to thunder in, and there's going to be a whole bunch of very angry people looking to take that out on those who caused this with their selfishness.

And if those who were in power think they can flee and hide in another country? They can... And the hunt will be on. Sleep tight you socialist bastards.

Oof, I'm in a mood this morning.

46 My sister came to visit me while I was stationed in Florida. We drove down to Key West. She wanted to see the six toed cats living in Hemingway's house. Anyway, she also wanted to see an alligator in the wild. I had visited the Everglades a few times and knew they were plentiful there. Once in the Everglades, I pulled over and got out. I told her to wait, it won't be long. After a minute or two, she realized those 'logs' weren't 'logs'. Lots of gators about in the 'Glades.

COJ, Ben Had, you're both right, except that Linda is a southern belle only by adoption and choice. She's from New York State!

She's never been one to talk about her inner life, and I've known her for umtpy-ump years. This move idea is such a big thing, even bigger than when she came to live with me in Denver, it's scary, of course. But she's not one to tell me, "It's scary," unless or until she's ready.

81 77 A pole dancing club at Cornell University funded partially by student fees is working to break barriers and address what its leaders describe as misconceptions and stereotypes about the activity.

To that end, the Cornell student group called the Pole Posse recently hosted workshops for trans, non-binary and plus-size dancers, the Cornell Sun reported.

It is more like a I beam than a pole.

On Nov. 8, Trump had 74,225,926 popular votes, and Harris had 68,800,347. Since then, 6,215,460 of the votes counted late have gone for Harris, and only 3,076,238 for Trump. 66.9% of the late-counted vote going for Harris.

I have already seen the first assertion that since Trump didn't get more than 50% of the popular vote, he's not a legitimate president.

However, naïve participants vaccinated with Pfizer-BioNTech were more likely to be infected and experience symptomatic COVID-19 compared to naïve and unvaccinated participants."

101 @84/Don Black: "So that 'Trudeau to resign' think was just a big tease. What a gyp."

It was pressure to try to get the man to make the jump on his own, but his ego is too large, he can't get out of his own head; can't stop admiring his reflection in the mirror.

The backbencher MPs of the house (across all party lines) would need to decide that enough is enough and force a vote of non-confidence, potentially ignoring the party whip and engaging in an open vote.

This would essentially be rebellion against their own party (if Liberal or NDP) guaranteeing them that their own party would refuse to back them with election funds in the upcoming election. They'd drop another candidate into that riding and ignore the incumbent's efforts to try to get elected as an independent.

Willingly throwing themselves into the fire is not something MPs with cushy sinecures do, so I wouldn't count on this scenario happening.
