Top Story

  • Zotac has leaked Nvidia's new RTX 5000 series graphics cards. (VideoCardz)

The lineup includes the RTX 5090, which you can't afford and probably won't be able to buy anyway, the 5090D which is a China-only edition for communists, the 5080 which will probably be overpriced and you won't want, the 5070 Ti which will probably be decent but expensive, and the 5070 which has 12GB of VRAM like the Intel B580 but which will definitely not cost $250 like the Intel B580.

The new cards all reportedly use GDDR7, so memory bandwidth is likely to be significantly better than 4000 series cards. GDDR7 memory uses trinary rather than binary signals - a technique known as PAM-3 - so it can move data 50% faster at the same clock speed.

Thunderbolt 5 also uses PAM-3 encoding but right now it's kind of useless so we should hope that's not a sign of things to come.

4 Evening and morning to all the sleepyheads and late toilers hereabouts. I've been awake since two, since I heard big black Stirling throwing up on the carpet. Great way to start the day, huh?

I'm trying some collagen powder in my coffee every day for a while. Verdict so far: It is *not* tasteless. You'd think a strong coffee blend would cover it, but not really. My second cup, minus collagen, tastes like coffee should.

Ah, there's little gray Dagny. She has finally emerged from whatever cavern she holes up in and is sitting on the end table to my left.

Oh, yeah, been dealing with that for decades. Arizona the part-Coon used to give a little distressed cry just before he upchucked, which often gave me time to grab him and slide him onto a tile floor. A lot of the others have done it stealthily. Stirling hoicks and hoicks several times before losing his lunch; if I hadn't been in bed and half asleep, I might have reached him in time.

15 Dagny, fortunately, is not prone to throwing up. At least not yet. The late great Wolf often tossed up something that looked like a hairball rather than food. His roommate and mine, Chekov, would quietly throw up, but sometimes it was up on a counter or my table; much easier cleanup.

Part o' the deal, I guess.

True story.
Mom could be...rather gullible. One day Dad tells her we have a goat that makes strawberry milk from one teat, chocolate milk from the other. Mom was incredulous at first. So Dad takes one plastic glass, squirter milk from one of the goat's teats and gives it to my Mom to try.
"Strawberry!", Mom exclaimed.
Dad takes a second plastic glass and milks into it from the other teat.
"Chocolate! We're gonna be rich!"
Dad breaks out laughing. He had put a little Quik into the bottom of each opaque plastic glasses, and the process of squirt___ milk into them mixed it up perfectly.

Didn't Shakespeare have a character named "Malvolio" too? In Twelfth Night or one of the comedies?

I recall looking at an apartment in Denver back before Arizona passed on. Decent place, too high a rent. I didn't care for the agent, either. She asked if I had cats, and I said, "One." "Are you willing to declaw?"

I lifted a brow at her. "Are you willing to chop the ends off your children's fingers?"

That was the end of that.

60 Re the Madison murderer:

Men have a lifetime of experience learning how to control the killin' urges that testosterone + adrenaline can cause.

But psychologists thought it would be a great freakin' idea to dump testosterone into teenage girls because they got into a fad on TikTok where they wanted to be boys.

Without that lifetime's worth of experience at controlling those urges, Is it any wonder a significant portion of them turn into murderers?

It's way past time for the evil bastards in the medical community who are performing these unethical experiments on children to get proper horse-whippings, and worse.

82 I wonder why they say "4 M.2 slots means you can get 16TB RAM". 8TB M.2s are expensive sure, but they do, ya know, exist.

Well, sort of. If you replace 'lights' with artillery shells. Also more machine guns.

94 For the second time in 4 months after visiting a new doctor I come to find that 1 prescription and 1 supplement I've been using weren't beneficial. The prescription was actually treatment for another skin condition. I've been using it for 6 years, prescribed by one doctor, confirmed by another and eliminated yesterday by the new guy. Gee I wonder why it never cleared anything up and I was told I'd need to use it for the balance of my life. Also, that ruddy complexion isn't what the two diagnosed but yet another skin condition. And the supplement my gastro surgeon told me was also a lifetime need and after almost 5 years of discomfort and outright nasty reactions I've discontinued it and have zero issues. WTH. Can I blame ocare for this?

Not so happily ever after! Disney princesses plagued with health risks

For some reason, I thought the article would be about STDs. I remember reading somewhere a while back that, of all the Disney women, Pocahontas was the one most hit on by dads visiting the parks.

98 "Here's the full source code for the Commodore 64 version of Elite"

Oooh, shiny!

I played so so many hours of Elite on my C64.

A uni colleague had a BBC Micro, it was interesting how much better the game went on the original platform.

Just so you know how anal I am I wrote my PhD dissertation on an SX-64. I had to buy a wordprocessing cartridge from the US so that I could use a daisywheel printer (for Greek characters). Admittedly our department didn't get a computer of its own until about 6mths before I completed thesis, and that was an IBM PC...
