Longshoreman Strike Revisited As the old saying goes, politics makes strange bedfellows. Labor unions typically do not lend any kind of overt support to Republican candidates. However, Donald Trump benefited from an atypical amount of labor union support and endorsements in the recent election. As a January 15 deadline approaches for an agreement between the International Longshoremen’s Association and employers represented by the United States Maritime Alliance, Trump recently met with ILA President Harold Daggett, at Trump’s residence, Mar-a-Lago, in Florida. Trump again backs longshore union as possible port strike nears. President-elect Donald Trump over the weekend doubled down on his opposition to automation as a possible strike by union dockworkers at East and Gulf Coast container ports draws closer. President-elect Donald Trump over the weekend doubled down on his opposition to automation as a possible strike by union dockworkers at East and Gulf Coast container ports draws closer. On Saturday, Trump reposted to more than 8 million followers on his social media platform, Truth Social, a Facebook message by Dennis Daggett, International Longshoremen’s Association executive vice president, praising Trump for his support of the union in its protracted contract fight with employers at Eastern Seaboard and Gulf Coast container ports.Taking an opposing view in a recent Stossel TV video, John Stossel "explores how automation will make the future safer and richer, if only unions get out of the way." While Harold Daggett is the epitome of a thug union boss, Trump's support for the actual workers is understandable. However, the concept of opposing automation seems to be at odds with someone who is trying to implement efficiencies within his own upcoming administration. Stay tuned. Strange Geography - Maine From a blog entry "Weird Geography: 10 Bizarre and Unusual Facts About the United States" - Here are some weird facts about the state of Maine. Maine is the closest US State to Africa. Quoddy Head, Maine sits just 3,154 miles from El Beddouzza, Morocco. For comparison, Florida is more than 4,000 miles from its nearest point on the African continent. If you take a road trip through the Lower 48, passing through each state only once, you always end in Maine. That’s because Maine is the only state in the continental United States that borders only one other state. Nobody knows how Maine got its name. All they know is that the name first appeared in writing in 1622. Despite the mystery behind its name, Maine was part of Massachusetts until 1819. Maine is larger than the other 5 New England States combined. If you visited one island per day, it would take you more than 9 years to visit every island in Maine At 3,478 miles, Maine’s coastline is longer than California’s (3,427 miles)More facts about Maine at the link, along with a bunch of other strange and interesting facts about US geography. Bonus Strange Geography - Daylight Savings Time Anomoly Lots of discussion last night about Daylight Savings Time and a recent tweet from Trump about doing away with it. While it exists, there is a strange occurrence once a year where there is no time difference between portions of two coastal states on opposite sides of the country. Notice from the timezone map below that an eastern part of Oregon is in Mountain time and the western panhandle of Florida is in Central time. Because the Mountain and Central times zones are adjacent, parts of Oregon (a Pacific coast state) and Florida (an Atlantic coast state) have the same time for one hour each year in the fall when clocks are turned back. ![]() Pickleball in Prisons? Yes - Pickleball in prisons! From banker to investments to writer and professional speaker, [Roger] BelAir now finds himself in the role of a pickleball advocate and coach in the unlikeliest of places – correctional institutions. From Rikers Island to Cook County Jail, BelAir has traveled the country teaching pickleball to prisoners. “It’s fun and rewarding,” he said. “I’ve never done anything so satisfying in my life.” He continued, “there are people who come from the perspective that there shouldn’t be fun or games in prison and say that they are there to be punished. I understand both sides, but even if you don’t want them to have joy, the guards use force 15-20 times per day at Rikers. If you could cut that in half, isn’t that better for everyone?” Getting to play pickleball in prison is a reward for many of the inmates and co-existing on the court with someone of a different color, age, or even someone in another gang, is a necessity. Anyone who’s played pickleball can certainly relate. We’ve all shared the court with someone of a different skill, age, or background. You have to figure things out together if you want to win and that figuring-things-out part is all the fun. “You have prisoners who are enemies and, all of a sudden, they are playing as a team and laughing together,” BelAir said. “You have groups of people who won’t talk to each other, but then voluntarily get involved playing pickleball on the same court. Guys in different gangs giving each other a high five. There’s something positive that comes out of each hitting session. I had no idea that something like pickleball could be so powerful until I saw the dividends for myself.” More here “Going into a prison is a lot like going into a Catholic church in Italy—they’re all the same, but they’re all different,” BelAir says. “Most people in prison are pretty good at sizing people up. If they weren’t, they might be dead. They’ve got real street smarts. So, within 20 minutes or so, they’ve got me figured out. They know I’m not there to talk about my hip replacement or my grandkids—I’m there for them. And they go out and play pickleball, and all they care about is hitting the ball over the net. I go from ‘OG’ (Old Guy) to bro or dude within a half hour.”

Well, here I am trying to find out how "Maine" originated.
Wikipedia has several explanations, none of which sound especially plausible to me. I guess the most reasonable is that it's a reference to "mainland" as opposed to the offshore islands, but even that seems a bit sketchy. Additional fun fact: the first colonial proprietors intended to call it "New Somersetshire." Glad that didn't stick. Posted by: Dr. T at December 16, 2024 10:10 PM (lHPJf) 34

It's also emptier. Something like 1/3 of it is a national forest. And another 1/3 is pretty much potato fields and dirt since they "closed" Loring AFB. (One of the Maine senators got them to move one office of DFAS there when they shut the rest of it down. So, it's this particularly far-flung, not really reachable, base in the middle of NOWHERE. I always wondered why Maine wasn't considered part of the Midwest. The two primary requirements needed for a state to be considered in the Midwest are 1) very far off to the east, and 2) extremely far north, close to Canada. It seems like Maine is pretty much the perfect Midwest state. Also, I'd suggest Nova Scotia and Norway.

You can probably count on one hand and one finger with Directors with as much acting and directing experience as Eastwood. Posted by: Thomas Bender at December 16, 2024 10:57 PM (XV/Pl) 168
There are currently yuge Truck areas right past the California border, where they change trucks... because so many Big Rigs used throughout the nation, do not pass Calif standards...
Which has driven out most of the small truck firms in Calif, which means they cannot support the Ports... all planned by big Corporations, in league with Calif's semi Socialist Gov. Posted by: Romeo13 ---------- There has been a lot of talk about a mega port, south of the border - Baja. California is out of their mind with their trucking rules and requirements. Pickleball is an abomination. It steals elements of legitimate sports and blends them into a mélange that subtly and inevitably robs the participants of their humanity, rendering them into lobotomized brutes. We see them, and we mourn. We behold their bestial conduct, and avert our gaze, much as we might do at the site of a horrific accident or Stephen Colbert. It would not surprise Werner in the least if the Austrians were involved here. The Cosmos smirks, and the Void giggles. Hate not the playa, hate the game, they intone. As much as I hated wsalking around Macy's smelling like a cologne advertisement, I did appreciate being able to get test sprays/drops then walk around the store. Some scents worked, some didn't. I could never wear Polo or Grey Flannel, e.g. They smelled like cat urine on me. But Canoe is fine. Whatever works with the oils in your skin. And the 'smell sense' of one's partner. I was amazed at how complicated cologned is, without animal testing. Anyone animal testing cologne should be shot. Or fed to said animals after being nicely trussed up. Posted by: BeckoningChasm ================= Men have funny ways of expressing it at times, like shaming girls just when they are at their most sensitive about their bodies. I follow a lot of those stories online, and the proportion of these self-mutilating girls that is objectively beautiful is saddening. Someone is abusing them horribly. Werner, if so, is Jill Wagner as hawt as she looks?
She could really heat up my wurst if you catch my drift. Posted by: Diogenes The answer is a resounding "ja." There are not sufficient adjectives to describe her allure. Were Werner thirty years younger and not currently married to wife number four ... alas, the things that cannot be. I do take some comfort in my success in preventing the casting of Lori Loughlin. Danica McKellar I would not object to, but there was no way that Aunt Becky could be allowed to bypass Winnie Cooper. Posted by: Werner Herzog Has Opinions at December 16, 2024 11:48 PM (tmPIh) 246

Not a movie maven, but Spacey was good in LA Confidential. But partly I like that movie, and a few others set in the same period, for how they captured the old LA feel and look. I often say "what are the two best things on the menu?" when at a new place. Depends on the kind of restaurant, the staff, etc, but it's not a bad way to start. Documents grabbed in the first days after Assad's fall look and more importantly read authentic, and provide interesting background on the last few years. Even as Israel was unable to interrupt most of the logistics across Syria to Hezb in Lebanon, they closely watched IRGC/Iranian activity in Syria and set limits on it, as communicated to Damascus, apparently with Russian help in setting limits, and enforcing them with attacks when needed.
There's a murky situation now WRT the new management possibly extending Russian base rights in Syria, but I'd guess if it happens main reason is Damascus wants a possible counterweight to .... Turkey. That country has replaced Iran as the big swinging schlong in Syria, so as Assad did but eventually failed to play Jerusalem, Moscow, and Tehran off against each other to extend his run, the new chief turbans will replace Ankara for Tehran in that matrix. The reason for the bump of Mountain time into Oregin is pretty simple. Boise is closer than any town in Oregon with a population over 50k. The locals in Ontario, et al, requested it.
The map of Arizona shows an interesting situation. The state is shown as brown, which means we don't change to Daylight time... except for the yellow (Daylight time) lump in the NE corner. That's the Navajo reservation, and they go with Daylight time to make the whole reservation, which extends into New Mexico and Utah, consistant. The smaller brown swatch in the middle there is the Hopi reservation, and it wouldn't surprise me to find out that the Hopi Tribal Council voted to go with the rest of Arizona just to be different than the Navajo Nation. I'm (wildly) guessing Israel will not give up its new buffer area until it is clear - if that's possible - that the new management in Syria will not allow anti-Israel activity, and of course shows they are not preparing for any themselves. This could be quite a while. Meanwhile the stickiest problem Israel has there is what to do with the Druze communities that want to basically become part of Israel (to join their brethren in Israeli part of the Golan, and of course for protection).

Bibi and Vlad definitely have a working relationship, have for years, but I'd be stunned if there were any moves towards Damascus. Of course I've been stunned before! Just as with Syria since '73, I think Israel will content itself with managing the situation (this is one where deterrence actually did work) without jumping into the morass. New Syrian management clearly wants no trouble with Israel for now. Lots of other pots boiling.

I agree Rhomboid - Israel has no interest in occupying territory (except for strategic bits like the Golan). They haven’t even been willing to occupy Gaza when they should have. They’ve taken out the heavy weapons in Syria, to go in deeper would spark a new fight that there’s no reason to have.

Gaza and West Bank (or whichever nomenclature you prefer) look to be hopeless nightmares - for Israel, and for the inhabitants. Gaza withdrawal was an experiment that ended in atrocities in Israel and obliteration of Gaza. I see only various kinds of awful solutions to the situation, from Israeli perspective.
At the moment, and for a few months, with world eyes on the other fronts, the West Bank has been a hot theater of action between Israel and various armed Paleo factions, and now, an open armed tussle between the PA and Hamas/PIJ. Fatah is flaccid politically, Hamas has major mojo (imagine being eviscerated and making your area resemble 1945 Tokyo *increasing* your political traction, but that's what's happened in the West Bank).
