Cigar of the Week

121524 diogenes La Gloria Cubana scaled.jpg

This week our pal Diogenes scores again with this excellent review of the The La Gloria Cubana, Series R

I have enjoyed this last year smoking my way through the "Sampler Pack" of cigars that Santa brought me last year, and, I hope I have been good enough this year to see a repeat present. (I think I have been.) It is always interesting to find new cigars and among them, some real surprises. The La Gloria Cubana, Series R is one such surprise. But I made a big mistake... more on this in a second. The Cubana was one of those cigars that was also a very good smoke. Very pleasant taste, it was solidly wrapped giving it an even burn and ash. A slight more draw than I am used to but that was OK as that focused my attention on the taste and hearing the leaf burn its way through the leaf. A fine tobacco flavor with a sweet nuttiness in the background. No bitterness or spiciness while providing a very aromatic smoke. The mistake was I as wrapped up in sweaters and coats, sitting on the patio in 35* temperatures and enjoying the cigar with a single malt Aberlour scotch. Oh the things we do for the Horde cigar aficionados. This cigar was built to be enjoyed where it is at least 80 degrees, there is a mild surf hitting the beach and you have a tall fruity drink with one of those umbrellas in it. My bad - an error I won't repeat with this cigar as I will surely be buying some for the future.

Excellent, Diogenes! Thank you!

******

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Anyone have others to include? Perhaps a small local roller who makes a cigar you like? Send me your recommendation and a link to the site!

12 Gun thread!

La Gloria Cubana is a great cigar. But it really improves if you can leave it alone in a humidor for a few years.

I went to the range this week with the crud. I thought I was doing horribly. But when I took the targets home and examined them, I was pretty pleased. Somehow being out of it kept me from doing some of my usual antics that interfere with consistent accuracy.

My second time doing draw-and-fire didn't go so well, though. I had not the slightest idea just how hard it is to establish my usual grip in one motion from the holster. So I wound up getting a bite from the hammer, or with the wrong part of my finger on the trigger. It seemed like it should be such an easy thing, but it's not. I have a lot of practice to do.

13 I picked up an Amberide IWB holster for my Ruger LCP Max the other day and I love it. One of the best fitting kydex holsters I have come across. Positive retention without that annoying pause to break the gun out of the holster that I have seen with some other companies stuff.

Good evening Weasel and fellow Horde members
Had our last range session of the year due to impending travel. And it was a good one. Left smiling due to the accuracy and consistency, and know instantly when a particular shot would not be where it was intended - and why. Folks, Sensei Weasel keeps trying to make this point with his (by now well-known to GT readers) characteristic subtlety. I would like to offer a slightly more robust teaching.

Simply meditate upon the root of fundamental. That's right, it's fundament.

In other words, Weasel is asking and imploring you to get your fundament out and practice your fundamentals.

See? If you pay attention to Weasel, and read between the lines, there is much you can learn, Grasshoppers.

32 Re: Asbestos video

Earlier this year, I had a project at work to abate asbestos on a fragment of wreckage from the USS Thresher. After decades on display at the Navy Museum, the asbestos (insulation of a piece of tubing) began to disintegrate, contaminating the display case. The project consisted of separating the asbestos from the metal tubing and coating it in a preservative to make sure the asbestos stays together for decades to come. Because the asbestos was part of the USS Thresher, it couldn't be discarded; it had to be preserved, unusual for a typical asbestos abatement project.

34 Diogenes thanks, that stick is a well known one I haven't yet tried, but now will. Speaking of which, unless I greatly increase my consumption (which isn't happening), I'll probably never try many many cigar brands or particular sticks - there are a zillion.

There's a tension in my mind between getting known favorites, and continuing to nibble on the vast quantity of "new to me" types. Such that I've only bought 3 boxes since I got into the vice. Other than that it's singles, 5-packs, occasionally 10-packs.

Posted by: rhomboid at December 15, 2024 07:20 PM (1m82a)

35 So, on to rifle reloading...I believe I've found an accuracy node for the Savage, again. I did some testing with 174 grain and 208 grain bullets, because, why not?

Long story short, the "boom" from the 208 grain, even though it was using less powder, was unreal. I mean, the noise and what not from the 174 grain bullet is stout but the load for the 208 grain was at another level.

I decided to save the 208 grain load for a match where I feel the need to intimidate the people on the benches on either side of me.

By the way, the load I put together for the 208 grain bullet had a muzzle velocity of 2700 fps, which is fast for a bullet that size in the 30.06.

53 Mas nails it on the phrase "shoot to kill" though he doesn't do it quite the way I do. My emphasis is on the jury. We don't (yet) have AI judges who simply look up the law, view the evidence impartially, then pronounce verdict. Even if we did, loads of people wouldn't like the verdict.

And loads of people who end up on juries (even more since so many otherwise responsible people say "Oh no, I sure hope I get out of this jury duty") are the ignorant masses. Those folks are easily swayed when a prosecutor starts using fancy Latin like "mens rea" and then start parsing your words.

Of course we shoot to put maximum impact on the bad guy. And we often them to die, deep inside our sinful hearts. But the words to use to frame your mindset are, "I had to use deadly force to stop him. I didn't know if anything but a 'core' or CNS strike would even slow him down. So I used the most effective shot I know to stop him." And, maybe add, "Even if I had used my bare hands or a broom handle or a knife, the most effective strikes I know all are potentially fatal, if done right. That's how it is when you're facing that threat."

And not just in an upward direction. If you miss the drone, your bullet will come down somewhere, at velocity (at least terminal dropping velocity) and impact somewhere.

Now, if you had a 12ga net round....

(* Of course, in Scoob's vicinity it's still likely to land in the city, so it really wouldn't add much danger. I guess he really could know what's behind his target....)

61 My very rudimentary temperature check on ammo and component prices suggests fever mostly broken, but "new normals" in some areas.

Ammoseek shows 9mikemike (brass, new) for under $10/box, which really is a return to pre-2020 Panic prices.

HP38 (my utility powder for handgun calibers) seems to have settled in for around $33/lb, which is a lot more than it was few years ago.

Primers - some new-to-me brand names are actually close to $.03/each for small pistol, more familiar names start around $.05. So, almost a doubling of the "old normal" price.

The impending Trumpenation should help the pool temperature, but the inflation including commodity prices probably underlies a lot of the increases now that the panic has abated.

63 AFA the cigar of the week, yes, it’s cold out now. But a few friends and I have volunteered as gunners for a local dog training group of labs that are mostly owned and trained by female non-hunters.

They get to see their dogs work live birds (pheasant) and we get some shotgun practice and, at the end of the day, do a walk through the property with a couple of the better dogs to get any escapees (pheasant farm).

And, of course, sit and enjoy a nice cigar with my buddies, after a nice day watching the dogs work.

If I’m ambitious, I’ll make up a wild game dish that I can heat up on the rocket stove. Always well received.

66 Gun/Movie thread crossover

Mark Felton has a video up about the story of an MP40 being turned in during a British police amnesty period in 2017. Gentleman turning it in remarked it had been used in the movie Where Eagles Dare.

TL;DR of this story is, this was not one of the actual MP40s or the MP40 dummy guns used in the making of the movie. Mark contacted the constabulary involved and received a reply that is troubling.

What was turned in back in 2017 was a Japanese replica that could cycle and even make muzzle flashes. They then informed Mark that they assume the item was destroyed.

I keep wondering if paintball rounds wouldn't be a good idea. I don't think it would be as dangerous if it missed, but it would blind optical/visual sensors. It might also help with IR or UV sensors as well.

69 After trying to climb up the learning curve for the better part of the last year, the shape and direction of the learning curve are more clear in retrospect. It has not always been linear. There have been false glimmers of progress that required regrouping to resolve.

Hearing the words is different than fully internalizing what they mean. Sometimes progress is not just getting the right knowledge, but being in the right place on the journey to truly understand and apply it. We've been fortunate to have some good mentors along the way.

As with many other things, getting to adequate is much easier than getting to proficient. It isn't about "knowing" everything and applying it on day one. Getting good is hard. I appreciate Weasel's continued focus on fundamentals. I've worked very hard on building and setting muscle memory lately which is paying off. Would not say that I'm "good," but certainly a lot less bad than was the case a year ago. Not every shot is a bullseye, but pistol targets no longer look like buckshot. Thanks all.

70 Mas nails it on the phrase "shoot to kill" though he doesn't do it quite the way I do. My emphasis is on the jury. We don't (yet) have AI judges who simply look up the law, view the evidence impartially, then pronounce verdict. Even if we did, loads of people wouldn't like the verdict.

Posted by: rhomboid at December 15, 2024 07:22 PM (1m82a)

Supposedly, the Thresher artifact is part of the compressed air line used to blow the ballast tanks that was recovered in 1964 by the submersible Trieste 2. More is known about the Thresher because it was undergoing a test dive and had other vessels standing by. The Scorpion was on patrol in the Atlantic when it was lost. Its location was not found for six months. There's a lot more speculation about its loss for the reason that no other vessel is known to have been in the area when Scorpion was lost. All official reports for the loss of both subs are now declassified by the USN as of 2023.

That's one part of the USN where spending more taxpayer $$ is really justified. Because temperature/light/humidity conditions in the Navy Museum have gotten so bad over the last few decades, a lot of historic artifacts have suffered damage: Admiral Nimitz's uniform, USN Antarctic expedition relics, a coconut shell cup used by the crew of the USS Quail to escape from Corregidor to Australia in a motor launch, and more have had to come off display. It's really sad when you think about it - pieces of history damaged (possibly beyond repair) because it's not a priority.

Take four of the .22LR Gatling guns, put them in a high-elevation mount and link the cranks so that one person and cycle all four, set it in a pickup truck bed, and you've got some serious anti-drone power with minimal collateral damage potential.

In 1879 Michigan built a new state capitol and the rotunda was designed to have display cases for Civil War battle flags.

When the did the renovation, they realized that this was a terrible idea, and the flags were carefully removed because they were crumbling thanks to the temperature variations, Replicas were installed and the originals were placed in climate-controlled storage at the historic museum down the street.

But if you were of a certain age, you got to gape at the original faded banners filled with bullet holes.

129 The Mossberg Patrol 308 we took to Texas this year has a $40 scope on it. A YT video showed up on my feed of a guy reviewing that scope - on an AR15. Apparently made for such. So it was not exactly built to make a long range shooter out of a carbine length 308.

This starts a discussion. Maybe it needs a better than $40 scope - and for 308 specific scopes that price starts about 10x that.

So - on the Christmas rifle is a nice but not really well known branded scope. sra blaster suggests move that scope onto the Mossberg and get a better scope onto the actual precision rifle.

Since she's always right I am presumung that is what we are going to do.

In another military museum where I volunteered there was a .50cal machine gun, the kind used in aircraft, display text said it had been recovered from a Corsair that had been at great depth for decades after WWII. Seemed hard to believe, looking at it. But curator said it was true.

I know the miraculous state of many Navy aircraft recovered from Lake Michigan is due to distinctive features of the soil and the oxygen levels at depth, but I didn't think any of this applied in the ocean.

You can still get in, but you'll have to call the Museum folks to get you on the Washington Navy Yard. The Museum is in the process of shutting down because they're planning on moving into a new building that's supposed to get built by 2030 (or so). We just picked up the land for it (west of the Issac Hull/6th Street SE gate on M Street SE) a couple of months ago. Be prepared to come to a construction zone. Some of the large exhibits (F4U Corsair, ship models, etc.) are coming down in order to get moved into storage until the new building is finished.

Handed me an envelope of info on a case here locally. Warned me about who I told about it, but that's another story. A while later, voila, local fisherman "discovers" a plane in a reservoir that showed up on his sonar.

And now that plane, I think the last surviving SB2-C, sits restored in Pensacola. Recovered from Otay Reservoir, near the border.

It's pretty amazing that Colt and S&W, the two primary revolver rivals for the 20th Century in the US, mostly stuck w/ their basic revolver design and function from the dawn of the 20th Century (1898 for Colt, 1899 for S&W) all the way into the first years of the 21st century. Looks like I'll likely rent three tables at some upcoming Gun Show 'round here, after the first of the year.

Forty-ish guns, and a considerable amount of associated gear.

Scoobs has called dibs on the Thompson Center 6.5, and one other Moron here has his name on the Vortex Razor HD spotting scope. I sold the Ruger 22/45 to a local architect here, who is going to mount a Class III upper on the frame.

I'll send Weasel the "Gun List" next week. That said, I kinda do like the Gun Show approach. Won't be the first time I've sold everything down to the bare table, and yep, that meant I'd sold the blankets, too.

215 I think I may have made some progress with my little H&R top-break hammerless .32 The mainspring is a bow-shape strip of flat steel about 2" long. The action pushes on the top end to make it bow more. I straightened it a little by hand pressure, and letting the hammer fall on some once-fired brass, it made the primer divots a little deeper. Then I cut a strip of dense foam rubber, and wedged it between the apex of the spring and the grip backstrap. With the grip panels on, the rubber cannot go anywhere. That stiffened the trigger pull, and it makes strong divots in once-fired brass. I think it's time to visit the desert, and try it with live rounds.

I think this is an "old pattern small frame hammerless". Five shot cylinder, nice nickel plate with black hard rubber grips. Very pretty little thing.

I've heard of a range near Winchester that folks w/ serious MGs or w/ long range rifles will use. Not sure if this is it, though.

219 Maybe for next week: What is a "bull barrel"? I assume it has nothing to do with David French.

221 Thanks Weasel (if you're still here) as always.

And thanks Diogenes for that suggestion re FWP. Indeed!

But it did kind of screw up those cigar experiences a bit.

Looks like a good number of outdoor ranges and an active training/event schedule for 2025. WVA, but next to the VA border.

224 And I'd guess that Tartus stuff is indeed Russian naval munitions (or "Syrian"). Big warheads, presumably, to make a boom like that. (need to go find/watch it)

There have been spectacular secondaries all week from IAF hits on ordnance locations.

225 I will be doing the asparagus/cheese/bacon/scallops thing this coming week, maybe some steamed white rice.

If I were an evil dictator, I would be storing my heavy weapons ammo deep underground. Just drill a grid of boreholes, say 12 inches, and case with steel pipe. Weld a cap on the bottom of the casing, so ground water cannot seep in. Put your shells in canisters that fit easily down well casing, and fit each canister with a latch so that a "fetcher" winched down the hole can latch on. Small caliber ammo could be packed into similar canisters. Suitable choice of wellbore could permit use of ready-made canisters, like fuel gas cylinders.

229 When some one searches for his essential thing, so he/she wishes to be available that in detail,
therefore that thing is maintained over here.
